My First Egg!

:0) luckycharm!

Lodi, United States

Jackpot! I just found 11 pullet eggs in a nest in a part of the garden where the chickens are not allowed! The only chicken it could be is Delphine--they are all very distinct, a little darker than the light tan eggs the Buff Orpington is laying and long and slightly pointed Delphine the Delaware regularly gets out of the hen yard and likes this particular part of the garden--so I am pretty sure it is her. Next question--can I eat them? They look fine.....

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Try floating them in cool water. If they stay on the bottom, they should be safe. If they stand up on end, they are older, and if they float, throw them out. Or, you could try candling them.

Lodi, United States

Excellent, granny! I'll float them.

londonderry, Australia

I am late replying about your first egg, but I sure relate. I have $50 tomatos. Seriously, I envy you and hope I have eggs to crow about (pun intended) next year.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

but we can be relaitvley assured that our eggs and our tomatoes are free of salmonella!

glitterik, be sure your chick source has NPIP number or a health tested flock, esp for pullorum/typhoid... you know chicks now, eggs in six months, you might have eggs in time for New Years egg nog....???

londonderry, Australia

wat is egg nog??

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lmao

londonderry, Australia

i hav heard of it but dont know exactly wat it is i am pretty sure it has egg and alcohol in it

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

He he he, was picking on ya, it is a "festive" drink for the Christmas holiday

londonderry, Australia

do u mean festive as in every one gets smashed of the stuff

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

ummmmmmmmmm it has been known to happen, depends on the person making it and how much festiveness is put into it. It is nasty if you ask me, but ya know

londonderry, Australia

i think i would lik lots of "FESTIVNESS" put in mine

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

The stuff is to sweet for me. I will stick with the Oj and the"festive stuff" I would consider cranberry juice just for the Holiday season to be "festive"

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i've never liked the store bought egg nog, which is what i tried growing up. the first year we were together and had chickens and fresh eggs during the winter, we were also getting goat's milk. so we had it the ol fashioned way, raw milk, raw eggs [tested free of salmonella] some allspice and a touch of rum...

londonderry, Australia

oh rum my worst enemy that stuff nocks me around sumthin shockin

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

Yea Cat and all for your new eggs! Everyone is finding
their eggs, and it's so eggciting! I have found a lot, too.
I am finding them in the strangest places- on top of the
poop pile (yea, yuck, but it's all wood chips from my horse
and a little poop) Out in the middle of the yard on the ground.
I had one ceramic egg in a nest box I had made on the side of
the barn, and found a new real egg with it there. I have been so
anxious to see everyone's eggs, and they are small, but the
colors are great. The amer's eggs are more blue than olive
which I love, the cochin (I only have 1 hen and 4 roo's boy did
McM goof there) has light brown eggs, and the polish have
really small buff eggs. I could not resist- I put the polish eggs
in the bator, there are 5. I don't have a polish roo- so they
could be clear, or a cross with an amer or cochin OR even
the leghorn crosses of Blanca's brood. You should have seen
hubby's face when he saw the polish, and asked "Are you
putting them in the bator?" Haha, "of COURSE dear!"

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Here's a few of the ameraucana's eggs. They have been
the busiest...I am so proud of my girls! Snif!

Hubby and I lost his Mom, and we have been busy with
taking care of things. Also- I have found my niche- I
have been busy selling a lot of quail hatching eggs. It's good
to 'see' all of you, and find all that I've missed! How have you
been Josh?

They are so beautiful- nice rich color! I have loved
finding eggs my whole life- who cares if they are not
all died fancy easter colors? It's the finding that's fun!

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

Dang, I hate it when I miss a day or two and can't look at all the threads....miss so much and have to play catch up. Everyone has such pretty eggs! I do the water test too on found nests.....but I use the good ones for us or for the dogs, I don't want to take the risk and sell them. When I take eggs out of a hidden nest I put a fake one in so they don't go find another spot. I took plastic easter eggs, put in a few rocks for weight, packed in saw dust so the rocks didn't roll around and then glued them shut. The hens don't seem to mind the bright colors or the different texture and keep laying there. Our Aracuana hen is laying under a bike that is propped against the garage....goofy thing. I used to love going out and doing an easter egg hunt and finding hidden nests. When we had chickens 8 years ago I had 6 hidden nests......I didn't mind as long as I knew where they were and they kept laying there. Now it is not near as amusing.....lots of very tight spaces where they could hide and I can't get to, so I try to keep them out of those places.

Congrats Catscan.....how many ended up being good?

We got another Americauna pullet egg yesterday....so tiny, so I don't know if it is from the same pullet that laid the one we got awhile back or a different one. They always seem to like to keep you guessing, huh?

Truest--its so good to hear from you! I am glad to hear that there are niches out there to fill. Right now, mine is crazy chicken lady. It is a change from crazy dog lady:0).

Jordankittyjo, what gorgeous eggs. What kind are they? I did find two more yesterday--both in the nesting box, both pullet eggs ,one dark brown (Marans) and one light tan (BO). This time I don't think the BO is a double yolk--but I'll know when I eat it:0).

Lba2--I sort of exposed Delphine's secret nest when I pulled down the invasive, but beautiful, perrenial morning glory. I may try to put a fake egg in so she doesn't find a new spot--but I suspect she will anyway. I haven't found any more there, and it looks like she was laying almost everyday. She is a crafty bird--definitely the most intelligent. I may leave in charge of the house when I go on my next work trip:0)

Haven't floated the eggs yet--I put them straight in the frig. I will post a picture tonight--they are unique looking. I need a recipe worthy of them!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hi truest!!! hope you and DH are doing well. sounds like a fun niche to me!

so polish are buff colored? i thought my one poilsh was laying, and started saving them... but they are white... guess it must be somebody elses...

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Well I spotted the roos messing with the hens. Is that a sign of eggs to come sooner rather than later?

I like store eggnog but I cut it in half with regular milk. Too sweet straight the way they sell it.

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am sure they add lots of sugar, HFCS, etc.... and preservatives...

you will like yours with goats milk.

yes, look for eggs!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey Tam, Cat, Molly and Ladybug!

Well- don't hold me to that buff egg, TF. I have 3 little
hens from Blanca's brood, and 1 is a cross, but looks exactly
like a black copper marans. The buff eggs could be her's, but
they are a bit younger than my hatchery girls and I am not sure
if they are laying yet. I found 1 of my polish just hanging
around the nest that I found the buff eggs in- so, until I see
her sitting on the (hidden) nest I am not 100% sure. I will
definately let you know when I am 100%, K?

Cat- I am still a chicken lady, too, to my son and DIL. Besides,
I haven't found a quail hat yet.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

cat, they are RIR eggs. i got my first new hampshire egg today. wait till you see how big it is. going to take pic right now

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

here it is next to the RIR egg to show the difference in size

Wow, those NH know how to lay an egg!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i wonder if it hurt?

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

Wow, look at those eggs. I thought the brown ones were very pretty too. I really like that deep brown color. Wow on your NH egg.....we get some like that every now and again, but usually can't catch who did it. I wonder that too......if it hurt. Especially when the poor pullets do it.

Christy

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I know that when one of my quail laid her first
egg, she let out a loooong whistle when she was done!
I'm sure it gets easier, but that first one- look out!
