July Blooms, Part 1

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, you must see your leaf as a big plant. (I took two to the sale in May) but I just couldn't part with the last one of Silverglade Oyster.

Here she is starting to bloom.

Here are some close up of the blooms. Some have green on the edges and some don't.

This bloom has a lot of green on the edges and I love her! Thanks, Brenda, for this beauty!

How cute Gail!
Love the curly/girlie leaves on her :)
Looking around.........nope........no new pictures to post since the ones I posted this morning *lol*
I am waiting on a couple new things though.......Kitaguni is going to bloom and I have some strange species sinningia from the Gesneriad Society seed that is has hairy orange buds right now *lol* I can't wait until that opens to show everyone *lol*

Went and had sandwiches at the beach and walked the the shore for a while. Then we went to Dairy Queen.......mmmm Strawberry Shortcake Blizzard.......So much for the "diet" today *lol*

Going to bed early tongiht........2 1/2 hour ride to Six Flags tomorrow bright and early in the morning :) Can't wait!
Knitting dishcloths all the way down *lol*

You really need to sell those dishcloths you make,Kim! I am not just saying it. I mean it! I refuse to use any dish cloth except those that you make as they clean so much better.

You all have so much fun this weekend at Six Flags. How is this for cutting things close for me. My company will be here at 2 tomorrow afternoon and I still have to go to the grocery store for everything in the morning.

That cracks me up that you say you are going to bed early because you have a 21/2 hour drive. I can't even go see any of my children in the state in 21/2 hours (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Gail, that is a beautiful plant! I too love the curly, girly leaves but that flower is gorgeous too ... looks frosted! I love AV's that have flowers with green edges too!

Kim: Have a great time at Six Flags! Better you than me ... I have never, ever been one for amusement park rides! I went on a Ferris Wheel a few times but even that makes me nervous! LOL.

We are just hanging around the house for the holiday weekend. Have to repaint the back of the house and I want to finish getting the pool area and deck back in order. Moved a lot of plants back in today ... it's looking pretty good! But, I still have a ways to go before all the plants are back in and arranged.

Kim, you should think about selling your dishcloth's on the Marketplace! I would buy some!

Hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July weekend!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to make myself iron some clothes for this weekend.........

I often get leaves mixed up with the wrong name, but please help with this new bloom......the pot is marked Tropical Twister and we know she is not that.......does anyone recognize this bloom?

Kim, help.....you can't leave town.......(LOL)
Cedarnest, Lin, Amy, etc.......

edited to say, Kim's cloths are the very best of any dish cloth I have ever used ........and I am old!!

Now I am talking to myself and no one is on line! (LOL)
It doesn't matter which color I would choose with the dish cloths as clorox is my best friend in the house .
I took a picture for everyone! The 'nubby' feeling of the fabric just enables me to scrub anything and it comes clean.

I love the Silverglades leaves and the blue and purple flower!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Talk about cutting it close Gail, here I am checking Dave's at 5:15 and everyone is still sleeping. We are leaving in about an hour or so but I MUST say good morning to my friends first or my day wouldn't start right *lol*

Thank you for the compliment on my dishcloths. They are all I will use too :) I like to replace mine once a year though as brand new ones are like brand new sheets :) They just feel so good :) I don't think I'd want to sell them though *lol* I would rather just make and give them. I'm always happy to use them in trading too *lol* I love making them because I don't need to carry a pattern around with me. And right now, knitting is quite comforting as it gives my hands something to do.

Gail, because I don't see any white fantasy in your bloom above I'm going to say that it's Streaker. Bristol's Party Boy has white streaks too but Streaker is blue/pink :) Very pretty :)

Oh you are going to have so much fun with your son and his friends Gail. I'm sure there will be alot of good laughs and memories made. Be sure to whip out that camera of yours :)

I can't wait until Kitaguni opens these darn buds but she sure looks cute even not in flower :) This particular Kitaguni is one I saved when a friend of mine gave up his whole collection of chirita. He had mostly species plants and a couple I was unable to save but this one seems to be quite happy. I'm HOPING that I might still have a flower or two left on the Heterotricha left so that I can cross the two *lol* Me and my perverted mind *lol* Everytime I have two flowers on different plants open at once, I think they should be mates *lol* It's a sickness I tell ya *lol*

Happy Independence Day Everyone.......how lucky we are to live in a free nation and be free to play in our gardens and speak our minds. Today I'm grateful to have met you all and for the friendship we all share. You all really make me feel at home here. I'm grateful for my plants and cherish them daily. I am grateful for those who have shared their babies with me and I think of you all every time time I water or admire a beautiful bloom. I love you guys :)

Have a great weekend..........chat more tomorrow as I'm off to ride the rollercoasters :) WOO HOO

Good morning to everyone and Happy Fourth of July!
Theres so many nice plant pictures, love them all.Gail, the dishclothes are great.I used them years ago and your right about getting everything nice and clean. Hae fun with your family!

Kim,Have a great time at the park. Are you talking about the old Riverside Park? When I left New England they were just turning it over to 6 flags.I love all the rides too.If they still hae the Cyclone rollercoaster, please ride it once for me.LOL.

Miss Lin,I'm glad all the work on your house is finished.Your pool area is great! It might be awhile for your sinningia from the gessie society to bloom.I think I have one growing like that.I will post a picture later on.I put mine right in the ground this spring and it seams to like it.

Have a good day,Jan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

always running late...........will be going to grocery this morning before Jackson and all his friends get here.

Guess what, Kim! If that is Streaker, you gave me the leaf..........so thank yourself!

Jannich, you are always up and 'at it' early in the am. Off to see what Streaker looks like on Streptocarpus site.

Then I have to get going early this morning..............
Have fun everyone!

Kim, you and Lin just kill me with your knowledge. I looked up Streaker and my new plant looks exactly like her. Thanks so much!

Columbus, OH

Kim, I thought I was the only one to do the fake order thing! I've learned a lot about plants that way, that's for sure. I've also learned that the experiences of gardeners are WAY different than the catalogs and vendors give sometimes. Valuable info before you buy a pricey plant!

(Zone 1)

LOL Gail ... I would have no idea whatsoever which Strep that one is! I don't know Strep's. Those dish cloth's look wonderful! Great that they are white so you can bleach them. Hmm ... wonder since Kim doesn't want to sell them on the Marketplace, I might have to think of something I can trade for a few! ^_^ "Hey Kim" ....

Kim: Be careful on those Roller Coaster's today!

Jan: You planted your Sinningia in the ground? Do you have to dig it up and bring it inside in the fall? I had no idea they could grow outside! I might have to find a shady location and plant one in the ground and see what happens!

I just gave a few of my plants a shot of VF-11 this morning and am getting ready to go out and feed a few more ... then it's lawn mowing time! Hubby is painting the back of the house this morning ... so after I finish yard work I will jump in our nice newly finished pool for a swim and then play with plants! Happy 4th y'all! I too am grateful for the friendships I've found here in this garden!

Hi Lin,

Yes I did plant the bigger unknown sinningia's in the ground in early spring and I'm going to leave them there for the winter.I'm just going to mulch them in the fall and hope for the best. There getting too big for the plant stand.LOL.There is sinningia that are hardy for our zones.Check these out.

http://www.yuccado.com/displayengine

and more gessies thats hardy for our zones.

http://www.plantdelights.com/cgi-bin/simplesearch.pl

I have the Achimenantha Butterfield Bronze that a generous DG shared with me last year that did stay out all last winter and came back.I'd be happy to share a piece with you:) The gessies are growing around the oxalis.

This one is the Achimenantha Butterfield Bronze that came back up at the end of May I think. It has a pretty purple flower.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jan, that is amazing! I am going to check out those two sites for hardy gessies. I had one you sent me that got so big I took her out on the front porch in a pot, but the wind smashed her one day. Maybe the ground is a better idea!

Thanks for sharing.
Jackson and group just called are he got lost (with a new highway) only 5 minutes from home (LOL)

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

In the ground how wonderful. It is way to cold to put them in the ground here. I live in the wrong zone for a lot of things.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi Gail,Happy 4th of July!
Thats too funny your son got lost! LOL.Hope he found you OK.Some of the sinningia do get big don't they.If I was you I would stick that sinningia in the ground.but thats just me.I'm always 'pushing the zones" with plants.LOL.
The Achimenantha Butterfield Bronze would do great in your zone too.I have plenty to share.I love the Sinningia 'Towering Inferno' that plant delights has.i think that one would be beautiful in a garden!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi there Diane,You do live in a cold zone.Brrrrr...In the ground is a good thing.Makes more room on the plantstands.but filled up the space very quick.LOL.

Do you growing a sinningia yet?? Are you liking them?

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

No I don't have any yet. I am running out of room. They are pretty though.

(Zone 1)

Wow, I had no idea there were any Sinningia that would grow outside! And, I see from Plant Delight's site there are a few that even grow as far north as zone 7! Oh, Towering Inferno is great, I see it gets to be 48" tall so it would look really nice in the garden!

I really love the one S. tubiflora: http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/04688.html with those white flowers. It only gets 20" tall, I bet it would be pretty in a hanging basket!

I love the yellow flower on S. conspicua: http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/06824.html - it gets only 8" tall so it's a small one but so pretty! Must be popular too cause they are out of stock on it!

I had not visited the Plant Delights site in a long time ... had actually forgotten about it, so I thank you Jan for posting about it!

Oh, I would love to have a little piece of that Achimenantha Butterfield Bronze ... that foliage is really pretty! I bet the purple flower just adds to the beauty of it too! I will reimburse you for postage if you can spare a little slip of that one!

I agree that Towering Inferno would look great in the garden! That one gets 48" tall - I like that one a lot too!

Gail: Hope your son and friends arrived okay ... isn't it just like a man to get lost?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Got room for one more plant? I put a cutting down for you when you said you liked sinningia guttata.LOL.By the time my weather turns cooler it will be rooted and have a tuber.

Thumbnail by jannich
Columbus, OH

Wow, till reading that site I had no idea that sinningia would be that hardy! Certainly not here, but compared to the heat-loving episcia, it's amazing!

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness ... that is beautiful! I would make room for that one! Now you need to tell me if there's any particular plant you are looking for or would like to have!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

That is really pretty.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hi Celene,It's pretty awesome that some of the gessie plants are hardy.

LOL.Sounds like a man thing to me too, getting lost..No plants needed Lin.I'm happy to share. But if you run into one of those Strep Cassandra at Walmart would you pick it up for me please. That strep just 'calls me"LOL.The strep site picture doesn't do it justice! I like the sinn conspicua to.it's cute.I wonder if the gessie society has seeds? I will have to check.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Look what I just found......I knew Mauro would have the seeds!

Bonnie, I just ordered from the Gesneriad Society because I heard that they need donations so badly. I hope it is true because I gave them a donation?

I still order always from Mauro, too.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

the gessie org. is a great place to order from as they have alot of seed.
mrsbonnie

(Zone 1)

Oh, that brazilplants website has some great looking sinningias! I have not ordered any seed from the Gesneriad Society yet but did have a list I made a month or so ago ... I need to find that list. I really would like to try the Sinn Leucotricha (sp) again. Brenda sent me a little one in trade last year and it was in the terrarium but must have died cause I haven't seen it in a long, long time! I think it would have re-sprouted by now if it was still viable. There's so much stuff in that terrarium, I really should clean it out one of these days but I kinda like the look of fullness that it has right now ... so many different plants, different colors and textures.

Wow Bonnie, you do have a lot of seedlings growing there! You must be the Sinningia Queen! I am so amazed at the size of some of y'all's collections! I don't know how you all have the time for so many plants ... especially if you work! I haven't worked in 16 years and I can't find the time to take care of the plants I have and I don't have anywhere close to what some of you grow. I am down to two lighted gessie stands inside the house, and they aren't real large stands.

We painted the back of our house today and I moved more plants back onto the new deck. I am so glad all the pool and deck work is finally complete ... it does look nice. I think I posted about the plant hanging system my husband did for me out there? He bought a bunch of wrought iron plant brackets and a bunch of those steel poles used for chain link fencing and pvc caps for the ends, painted it all dark brown to match the aluminum pool enclosure and I hung almost all of my plants back out there today. Here's a picture I took this evening - mostly hoyas hanging on the new pole. I will take a pic tomorrow of the pool and deck. I still have quite a few more plants to move inside and hope to get some of them back in place tomorrow.

Boy are the fireworks flying around our neighborhood! Louder than I remember it ever being on past holidays, I guess everyone is getting into the spirit this year. There will be more fireworks at the Daytona International Speedway later tonight when the race is over. Those we can see from our backyard because the Speedway is only about a mile from us ... they light up the sky!

Hope everyone has had a happy and safe 4th and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Can anyone tell me what this is called. I very nice DG'er sent me this
as a welcome gift many months ago. I repotted it and forgot to label it. It is doing very nicely but I would like to know what it is , so I know what to expect from it and how to take proper care of it.
Any info would be great. I don't expect you to predict the bloom color...LOL!

Good Morning Everyone,

Little later start than normal for me this morning *lol* Got home just after 1:30 this morning and slept until 7:00. Been doing dishes, laundry etc. since then but finally just needed to sit. I don't know if it's nervous energy or because I'm not smoking but I just can't seem to sleep much. At 1:00 this morning I was still awake in the car talking with hubby and had been up 24 hours. I sure will be happy when this passes *lol*

Bea, I'm going out on a limb here but I think you may either have a sinningia or a kohleria there but I could be wrong so I'm sure one of the experts will pop in and tell you for sure what that beautiful foliage is..

Jan, I did ride the Cyclone and WOW does that thing beat you up. I have been going there since I was a kid and it was Riverside too but quite honestly it's SO much better as Six Flags. Today I am really feeling it though *lol* What a WONDERFUL time we had. I really didn't expect Josh (18 1/2) and his girlfriend to hang out with us all day long but he did and that was awesome because we all got to ride as a family. Jess (14) and her friend went to the water park for a while because they really wanted to swim instead of ride. It really wasn't a swimming kind of day but she is a fish so we let them. Hubby and I got to do a few rides just the 2 of us which was neat. It just was a perfect day all the way around:)

Today is going to be a beautiful sunny day so I think we're going to take advantage of it and hubby is going to rototill my front flower bed larger so that I can move around 75 Iris there as I have them planted in too deep of shade right now. Which means I will have to go to the neighbors and wheel barrow in 3 or 4 wheel barrows of horse manure *lol* Just what I feel like doing *lol*........NOT. Maybe he will be too tired and sore when he wakes up to want to do that today *fingers crossed*

I'm hoping that tomorrow can be a total day of rest and to be able to play pictures etc. all day :) I love days like that :)

Miss Lin my dear friend, I thought I had sent you some dishcloths with the doilies. I'm sorry. They will be in the mail Monday :) They are going to be light blue but if you want, you can always bleach them like Gail did. I am so awful with bleach *lol* I remember one time, I made this beautiful doily but in the process it got really dirty and I didn't like the color and wanted it white. I soaked it in 100% bleach overnight and the next morning went to take it out of the bleach and the whole thing fell apart in my hands like slurry. It was awful, I cried. I am forever "tie dying" things by accident with bleach *lol*

Bonnie, your seedlings look beautiful! I am so envious of those of you who can grow from seed. I'm going to really try to get better at seed this fall/winter when I play around with all the strep seed. You are so lucky to be able to get seeds from Mauro, he has some really awesome things!

Gail, I hope you are having a wonderful time with your son & friends! Funny how they sometimes lose their way coming home but doesn't take them long to find it :) Home is where the heart is :)

Well, I think I will put my sandals on and take a tour outside this morning.

Catch up with you all soon ^_^
Kim
