July Blooms, Part 1

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Hi Jan!! My sinn AC 1503 opened all the way! I love it, color, size, form and foliage! There are several more buds to open too, it's great, thanks again!

edited to say, that's an awesome big sinn you've got growing there. I have a couple of big ones like that growing from my mixed gessie seed, they are only 6 months old though so I guess I have awhile to wait for blooms!! LOL

Kim, this one is for you ..... hoya Kentiana (sp) first bloom!! She has finally recovered from her move from Maine to Idaho. LOL The bloom is so pretty in this close up photo, you can't even see the yellow with just the naked eye!!

Wishing you and DH the best with the no smoking thing, that is great that your doing it together!

Jan here is my first bloom from the Shenandoah Moonlight leaf you sent me last fall, I truly love the pink and yellow together!! The pink is much darker and thus the flower more dramatic in person!!

Brenda had sent me a King of Kings leaf and I had to cut her foliage down in size. It was taking up the whole shelf (LOL).

Don't you just love that 1503 Sinningia bloom!

Jan, you don't remember but you sent me a cutting of Sinningia Cardinalis 'Innocent' and it bloomed white. Yours look like it is the one you cut from???????

I must not have the pretty blooming hoyas.........they bloom and are blooming right now but they all look the same although the leaves are all different. I did see some blooms that had more red than the others........going outside to take a picture.

Post them later.........I got carried away looking at blooms

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

All I can say is wow, wow, wow!!
Brenda, Kentianna is SO wonderful! She must really love her new mommy :) That is just so awesome, made me smile from ear to ear. You are taking such wonderful care of her.......nothing more gratifying than seeing one of your babies prospering for a close friend........totally completes me.
I love love love that sinningia too! oooooh SO pretty and the color and form are so stunning!
Sounds like you are going to have a great visit with your cousin :) That's awesome.

Jannich......I'm SO beside myself that Neil's Streps is going to grow out some of my strep crosses. I know I will have waaaay more seed than we all need here and I can only grow so many myself. It's better to sow them fresh so I was thrilled that he agreed to grow them too :)

That is going to be SUCH a wonderful project this winter for everyone. I just had to go count and I see 16 crosses that have DEFINITELY taken as the pods are long and twisted and about another 10 that have only recently been crossed so it's still a little early to know if the cross took or not. Let's see.......16 crosses with approximately 1000 seeds per pod.........16,000 seed *lmao*.......too funny!

My hoya Multiflora has not stopped blooming since witner and now the only other hoya I'm growing Heuschkeliana is loaded with buds. Thus the reason I kept these particular 2 *lol* I walked all around Home Depot today with a pot full of Polyneura and put it down right before we left. I said.....won't bloom enough for me and isn't a gessie. I ALMOST picked up a basket of the variegated Lacunosa as they are VERY hard to find but I think all of you have that one now so I put taht one back too. I was kind of sad.......not one gessie to be found in the Home Depot or Lowe's and I looked real good too :( I did see one of those ping things though and almost picked it up but again......not a gessie *lol*

Having a real fungus gnat problem right now. Not sure why but it's driving me nuts. Almost bought the ping to eat all the fungus gnats *lol*

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kim, I am going to wait until early February when Lowe's starts getting in hoyas as I want some good smelling ones..........no reason to get them now.....with winter coming on........

You can get those yellow sticky cards I think for gnats. I have them (gnats that is) but no sticky cards right now. Did someone say you could spray with some household product?????????

REally happy for you to have Neil's Streps growing out for you........how did you pull that one off my friend!!! (LOL)

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Kim,That's is so cool about Neil's.I hope your going to get some kick-back if they name any.LOL.I'm getting ready for winter seed sowing.McDonald's sundae cups make the best little container for growing seeds.Everytime I go to town I just have to stop for a sundae, just for the cup.You know I have gained 5 pounds since spring.LOL.16,000 seeds.WOW.Thats pretty amazing all the crosses your doing.

Hi there Gail,This sinningia is different from the sinningia cardinalis Innocent, the leaves on this one is fuzzy, but not a nice fuzz. It's hard to explain.I might not ever find the name theres so many sinningia. But thats OK with me.I just want to see the flower after growing it so long.Maybe when it blooms someone at the gessie society will know which one it is.

Hi Brenda, AC 1503 looks great! It is a awesome plant.Strep.Moonlight I like too. Some of the big sinn are just like growing a perennial plant from seed taking up to 3 years to bloom.Have fun with your cousin, sounds like fun!

I have another one going to bloom for the first time.Keyring shared this one with me .(Thanks KI.) It's so furry

That is really pretty, Jan. I have seen pictures of them in bloom but haven't known anyone who really grew one to bloom!

Maybe we can all help Kim with names when she becomes famous for her crosses!

I have a really pretty sinningia cross from Bonnie that I think still needs a name. I am not very creative for sure with words.

We haven't had rain in months now. If I had ever known that orchids would bloom in this intense heat, I would have started 2 years ago when I moved to the 'boonies'...........
Oh! Jan! I forgot to tell you that your orchid you sent me by division, one is still alive and looks great. She is growing fast. The other one bit the dust (LOL)

All my hoyas are so ordinary.........but I can't afford another addiction right now. (or time either)

What are these red round things Anyone? All summer she looked like she was putting out white blooms but I never saw one.......just the beginning part of the bloom I guess.

High Chocolate keeps blooming but can you see what I see behind this bloom on the next bud??????? Time to spray.........

The first of February I cut these back so hard there were just nubs in the pots. They are liking this dry hot weather I guess.

Look at that little salamander on the wall........the bit of purple peeking through the plant is a bloom from Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow up on the back porch.

Gail, that's a seed pod on that Epiphyllum! And the flower on that orchid is unbelievable!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the information on the epi. I also have a Vanda blooming in this gosh awful heat. I will take a picture in the morning for you........really really big blooms.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

WOW Gail, the color that surrounds you every day! How amazing is that? Just like being in paradise I tell ya!

I don't think I'll ever have anything worth naming *lol* and it's SUCH a long time before you can name anything and quite honestly such a hassle I think that I really don't think I'll ever bother but just the thrill of "what could be" in growing out the seeds makes it worth trying to hybridize *lol* There is alot of work involved in naming something, you have to grow it out for 3 generations etc. and there are just so many named hybrids that sometimes alot of them look the same. Just being able to say "hey, I made the cross that produced that flower" when one blooms is a major accomplishment for me.

I am STILL growing out Bristol's Party Boy x Self which is my very first seedpod and have yet to see a bloom *lol* The tray looks like a head of lettuce and they all look happy as clams but not a bloom stalk in sight yet. It's a long process. My plants seem to grow quite slow here which is fine but it just seems to take me alot longer to get things to bloom. Sometimes it's nice that things grow so slow though because they don't outgrow their pots or their space as fast which allows me to fit more in *lol*

I haven't been able to post my early morning posts lately because the keyboard at this computer wouldn't type 6 different letters. I guess too much had been dropped on the keyboard (this is the kids computer) so last night we bought another keyboard. This is only a $14.99 one but I have to tell you, I really love the way the keys feel. I'm like typing away with the greatest of ease *lol* It's nice to be able to sit and have my coffee and be able to type *lol*

We are going to Massachusetts which is about a 2 - 2 1/2 hour ride from here on Friday as we are going to 6 Flags New England. My daughter is bringing a friend and my son is bringing his girlfriend so everyone will have a "riding buddy". It's going to be so much fun. Hubby and I are still big kids and LOVE the rides so it's going to be a fun family day, I'm really looking forward to it. Friday will make day 5 of neither of us smoking so it's going to be quite different and awkward. I'm finding I have to relearn to do alot of things lately. I'm trying so hard not to be edgy or irritable. I keep praying for the strength and willpower to overcome each and every craving and so far today will be day 3. We have been walking every night and taht really seems to help. My son says, "keep it up, keep up the Jenny Craig thing you are both doing" *lol* So funny.

Well, I'm pretty sure I have bored whoever might be up this early to tears by now *lol* I hope you all have a wonderful day and I will check in from work later this morning :)

Hi Kim;
I smoked for over 50 years & have been smoke free for 1 year now, thank God. I was really afraid i would'ent be able to do, as i loved to smoke, but i took the chantix for 2 weeks & quit & have not had a problem since, & my hubby still smokes, in the house & it does not bother me at all.soon you will feel the same way, just give it a little time. you will be so glad you did.i feel so much better since i quit, as i use to cough pretty bad & now i don't cough at all.lots og good things, not to mention the money you save.lol
mrsbonnie

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you so much Bonnie, that means alot to me.
Hubby and I have both been on Chantix since the day after my surgery 6/17. July 1st was our quit date but we decided that since 6/30 was the Monday that we would try it on Monday in preparation for Tuesday. Neither one of us has smoked since Sunday :)
I am definitely the weaker of the 2 and definitely the one having the hardest time. Luckily he is SO encouraging and keeps me in line *lol* I wouldn't be doing the walking either but he keeps wanting to go for walks and I don't want him to have to go alone so I tag along *lol* I just seem to not have the will power that he does but with this willpower we'll both make it :)

Thank you again, and congratulations on a whole year! That is AWESOME, I'm SO proud of you!

Conga-rats to all of you who quit smoking! It's very hard to do, and such a good thing for your health!

(Zone 1)

Well, Good Morning Everyone! Hope y'all are having a good start to your Wednesday!

Kim: Congratulations to you and your hubby for trying to quit smoking! It really is hard but will be well worth it healthwise, in later years. You will both be in much better cardio shape to run around after the grandkids and not be huffing and puffing to catch your breath! ^_^ I'm glad you decided to go with the chantrix. I hope it kicks in and the craving begins to wane a bit for you. Hang in there and know that everyone here is pulling for you and your hubby too!

Mrsbonnie: Congratulations on being nicotine free for one year! It must be hard if your DH still smokes. I don't know how you do it. I haven't smoked in many years but my allergies have gotten so bad the past fifteen years or so that I can't be around cigarette smoke at all. Same goes for insect sprays and strong gasoline fumes. I've had times in the past where I go to get gas in my car and the fumes are so strong I begin to cough and weeze and I can't breathe. And, in the summer of 2004 when we had Hurricane's Charley, Frances and Jeanne come through here in a five week period I remember when our power was off and my husband hooked up the generator. We had all the windows open in the house of course because it was so hot and the generator was for the refrigerator, one fan and the aquarium. At one point the generator was outside the kitchen window and the gasoline fumes got in the house and I thought I was going to die. I couldn't catch my breath. It even scared my husband. He got me way out into the backyard away from the house and got my car started and had me get in the car and had me ride around in the air conditioning of the car for awhile. He had to find a different location for the generator from then on. I really feel bad for folks who have asthma if that's how they feel when they have an attack. It really is scary!

My dad who is 83 recently tried to quit smoking cold turkey. He ended up with some major withdrawal problems. He isn't in the best of health anyway and has been smoking heavily since he was @14years old! My sister and I both tried to tell him it wasn't a good idea to try quitting cold turkey that he really should talk to his doctors first to get some help. He thought he could do it on his own and went without a cigarette for @ 2 weeks but ended up not feeling well. My sister tried to explain to him that after almost 70 years of being a heavy smoker, his system was rebelling with that sudden stop of nicotine. His body needed it. He was so proud after the first few days and said he felt better but after about a week he wasn't doing too good and after the 2nd week he ended up lighting up again. He's back to smoking, but at least has cut back a bit I think.

Well, I am heading out to the grocery store. I am going to make Chicken Enchiladas for dinner tonight and need to pick up a few things. Hope everyone has a great day!

I was out in the yard a few minutes ago. I found 3 of the Hoya lacunosa speckled leaf in bloom. Here's one of them.

And, the regular Hoya lacunosa on my front porch ... full of blooms and smells heavenly in the evening.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
(Zone 1)

This is one of those Exotic Angel plants I bought last year. No label but I think it might be Hoya kentiana. If this bloom opens it will be the first time it's bloomed for me.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Wow Lin, those are spectacular!
And yes.........you have a beautiful Kentianna there :)
WOW are those awesome!

Kim

(Zone 1)

Thank you Miss Kim. The Hoya multiflora I got from you is getting ready to bloom again too!

It's still just sitting inside one of those self watering AV pots ... I need to actually plant it in there! It seems to like the extra moisture.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
(Zone 1)

I have two Chirita tamiana plants that are getting ready to bloom. I found buds on both of them this morning.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Lin, she looks so healthy and big. You need to pot her in a bigger pot? Yes, that one never likes to dry out. I bought one of those cheap WalMart pots with the bottom "lip" to put water in. I keep the bottom with a little water in it at all times :)
I have 2 suckers I need to cut off mine and start this fall/winter :)
I love that one as it's always in bloom and your looks great!

Congratulations!

Kim

(Zone 1)

Kim, you are so sweet but if you could really see my multiflora in person ... it isn't looking all that great. In bright light the leaves look a bit splotchy/chlorotic. I don't think it needs a larger pot actually. I'm thinking of re-potting it right into one of those smaller self watering AV pots. The one it's sitting in is too large ... I just stuck it in there to draw some of the moisture up from that av pot, but that one is actually too big to plant it in.

I have tried those self watering plastic hanging baskets from Wal-Mart, that have that little lip/cup type thing that you are supposed to add water to. I will have to check out what they have in regular pots like that. Is yours ceramic or do they come in plastic? I'm at Wal-Mart at least 3 times a week, will have to see what they have the next time I'm in there!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Mine are plastic. The small 4 inch ones are $.96 each and then they go up in size but they are really cheap.
I can only get them now because once fall hits, they take all the growing stuff away and you can't find ANYTHING until spring again! Seriously, I can't find a thing once they start putting the Christmas stuff out in October *GRRRRR* It's just awful!

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You are making me jealous, Lin...........of your pretty blooms. I think I might have a Kentiana............you know me and names.......I never know what I have. Let me go take a quick picture of her. She has not bloomed but she was a baby and she isn't getting any sun on the front porch.

We got rain today for the first time in many months......the farmers aren't happy about it.......but I have big cracks in my yard from the drought.

Do you think this might be the Kentiana?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is another kind.........I should be letting them get some sun...........oh well, they are healthy.........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is a third kind . The leaves are not as long as the first picture.

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Gail, your first photo does look like it might be H. kentiana. Second one might be the speckled leaf H. lacunosa or else it's the variegated aeschynanthus. Third photo looks like it might be H. ds-70.

Look what I found blooming this evening! I'm not sure what it is ... columnea or aeschynanthus. It was hanging out in one of the trees in the backyard. I've had this plant for about 2 years and it's never bloomed before that I know of, at least I don't ever remember seeing these flowers before!
