Another Hot spell

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

lol... I just decided I was going to watch the weather reports and not transplant anything that wasn't necessary until we're expected to get some rain.

I have dill that is waiting patiently

Eugene, OR

Luckily the weatherman was wrong, it didn't get as hot as they thought. redchic....Lovely place to work :-)

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

zhinu.... your dill could be waiting a while!! good thing that it is a dill!!

Sally, wow definitely a night owl! The weather man was wrong for today? Felt hot to me!!! what were they predicting? I agree it is a lovely place to work.... most of the time. I usually only post the pictures of the pretty areas!!

Eugene, OR

They said 96 deg this morning. Don't think it got that bad. It was hot though, especially in the sun. I like doing computer at night after DH has gone to bed, it's my quiet time.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yeah, I don't think it did either. I didn't actually look at my thermometer today. Kezi news said 94 was what it was... I think. Either way.... lots of watering! This is my quiet time as well, sort of sad that it has to be at 1:00 am, but I guess if that's all that works then it has to work!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That is a beautiful place to work, but I feel sorry for you having to be out in the sun! I was out watching my DH build a table for my mini garden today and I was cooking just sitting there.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

your quiet time mgh?? Ahhh... it's give and take. I'd give it away anyday where it'w 95 or 35 deg. but, 55 -85 and not raining is a job that I wouldn't trade for anything! I have a few digital pictures of out and out cold weather days that I may post, but most of them I took before I had digital and have never put on the computer. One day we were working on a trail that had torched in a wildfire a couple of years before and the picture is of the 4 of us standing next to the name sign, sweaty, covered in sweat, and 3 hours late (getting off the trail). a crazy day... but one that none of us will ever forget!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I guess where I was going with that I really can't complain because there's rarely a dull day out there!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

LOL, yes, my quiet time too. I'm going to regret this when my kids get up in the AM though.

Sounds like a great job. Would love to see more pics if you get them loaded to the computer.

My eyes are bugging out....guess that means I should finally go to bed.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

WOw, 3:45.... you beat me this time!! I'll post a couple more here but then I'll link over to a web page maybe tomorrow. It's my goal, someday when not working two jobs, to put all of my pictures on disks (so that i can put them on a web site for all the past crew members to look at) that I have taken since I have had this job in 1995. But, that's a BIG project!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Yes, I'm not usually up that late, but last night I just couldn't sleep. Surprisingly, I don't feel too bad this AM.

Yes, that is a big job! I have thought about that before and that is as far as I got! LOL We did back up all of our digital photos though with an external drive and through my DH's work we are getting prints of everything...for free! Now comes the task of putting them all in albums!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree with the external drive back up. I was house sitting for some folks who edit and publish a native plant booklet thing, twice a year I think, and they back up all of their pictures on external drives for two computers. Which was really helpful when their place was broken into and someone stole the computer harddrives. I saw how devistating things were for them when they realized that the hard drives of the computers had been taken. the first thing that they asked me to do was to try to find the external drives amongst the mess of the house! It made me a big believer! I don't have one yet, but I'm definitely going to get one! and still hope to get the pictures put on CD's!!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Did the thieves leave the external drives? Ours is right on our compter desk, so I would think that it would get stolen too.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Well, the idiots got one but not the other. It actually seems like an accident that they even got the one. They just yanked chords to get the hardrive out faster (I guess that's the reason anyhow), on the one computer every chord was left that wasn't for just the hard drive, which left the external drive, on the other computer they had a usb cable or two and the external drive was probably tagging along hitting somebodys feet as they were going down the stairs with it. Now the people that I was staying for are really paranoid and backup with both external drives as well as an external server!! It's so unfortunate that that's the situation of things. The upside is that when I stay there now I feel very secure with all the new locks, security gadgets, alerts and alarms. it was a very rustic house before. They even hooked the garden up with a device that will sound in the house if someone open the fence into the garden!! (their garden is like a child to them)

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

If it were me, and knowing what I know now after seeing what that was like for them, I definitely would tuck the external drive away somewhere that's a little harder to find.... even if it ment another cable to extend it. If they have lots of time it won't make a difference, but if they're short on time they may not take the time to mess with all the cables. For them, the thieves were definitely after as much personal information as they could find for account numbers, tax files, billing info, etc, etc, and the work info for one of them.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That would be devastating! I can't even imagine going through that. I didn't even think of all the personal info that would be stolen if our computer was stolen!

I'll have to tell the DH about putting the external drive out of sight. We have a big dog with a really big bark. LOL Most people are afraid of her when she barks at them. But I know there are ways around dogs when you really want something.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

You guys should record the show It Takes a Thief on the Discovery channel at about 5:00 weekdays (or it used to be). They simulate a burglary with the owners' permission and record the whole thing. Then they come in a put in a security system. It's really educational. But creepy, too.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

redchic01 - We are supposed to get a 75 degree day next week, if there is no rain in sight I'll probably plant them then. My ornamental strawberries I'll probably wait for rain to do, even if it is this fall. My parsley and basil is still small so it's not a big deal to leave them for the moment. Other things I pick up will depend on what they are. I had to stick the garlic in; it had just been pulled out of the ground. I've lost two so far, but that doesn't bother me so much, it just means I have more garlic for the table.

Who remembers the year we had with 72 days of straight sun, and then the deluge on Memorial Day. Both me and my husband, separately, we didn't know each other at the time, were out camping that day.

If you want to use the external hard drives simply for back-up, what I'd do is just hook them up to back-up and then hide them until you back-up again.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

katie59 - I remember that show, I loved it. I don't have cable now so I don't know if it's still on, but that's a great suggestion for people to watch.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, that's what we used to do, but I like to have access to it because it has all of our music on it too. ;o)

Katie, yep, I know that show. My kids love it! Not sure if that's a good thing or bad? LOL

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Our external is fuller than our standard hard drive. We're worried about the life expectance of our desktop. A lot of the space taken up on the external is music.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It's too hot! Inside my house is 80 right now.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree, the outside thermometer is saying 95 again today! Wasn't it supposed to start cooling off?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Officially it's 84 here, but it seems like we're always a little warmer then where they take the official temperature. I think it’s supposed to start cooling off tomorrow.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Thats what they want us to believe! Dream on! Think "They" made another mistake cuz I heard today too. All week it seems 'they' keep changing when we will cool off.

I am right down the road from you zhinu & I can't even be out side long right now. The work I have to do is in the sun -- the breeze isn't even helping much. Official temp is for Seattle, not us........ that's 84 in shade here.

OMG 95? Drove through OR about 2 wks ago. Almost died with over 100 temps. How do you stand it??? CA no longer for me. I need to be outside, but not being cooked!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

This one is Olympia, I think it's taken out by the airport. It says 86 here and 83 for Seattle.

I'm not sure where Gate, WA is. How far is it from here?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ok.... this is only going to work if people check the link now. maybe I'll copy the page. Link to weather dot.com for eugene oregon at the moment. http://www.weather.com/weather/local/97401?lswe=97401&lwsa=WeatherLocalUndeclared&from=searchbox

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

That's too hot for me. This is about as hot as I can stand, and I'm already losing energy.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

too hot for me too! I couldn't paste that weather report. But I could paste this one from weatherunderground. I always feel like I need proof of the weather when it gets that way!!! I wonder if the temp at my house is diferrent than here? hmmmm

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Gate is a VERY small community in Rochester, right next to the Grays Harbor county line. We are still on the map, barely. Just trying like most here to keep the community recognized..........I see you don't go by the 'weather men' either? Always tend to be off for us, don't they.

Precisely why I left CA, redchic! Could only stand to be outside 15mins at a time & my commute was over a hour away! Least we only have about 2-3 mos of this stuff.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I was wondering where Gate was. Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it out some time when I go to visit family in the area. I'm glad you left CA too! Doesn't sound to me like you were ment to be there. And that commute! Mine is about an hour, but like you said... our summer is truly only 1/4 th of the year. That makes it just fine for the while.

Myrtle Beach, SC(Zone 8b)

Do ya'll experience the humidity as we do in SC?? Today it was 92% with a temp of 80 at 0730 am. You are wringing wet before you can get to the car!!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

91 deg in Silverton at 7pm.. .We do not have the humidity like you have in the south and east coasts. Thank goodness..I think the humidity would just about kill me!

Myrtle Beach, SC(Zone 8b)

It just about kills me too!! The older I get themore I think (dream) about relocating.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I lived in CA during the 6 year drought. It was torture for a water baby like me.

I found gate, maybe I get down that way. I was actually born at Scott lake which is half way between us.

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

I love it here. Right on the black river. Fave thing is to take canoe out on river & check out life. Lot's of wildlife. Just wish some of them wouldn't eat my animals! Even too hot for canoe, just sitting in the sun. Don't want to swim in it now - seen to many beaver recently & heard about Beaver Fever. None of that for me! Stick to waiting it out in front of the fan.

Sun about to go behind hill, have to rope the kids in to go move rocks / bark. Repair Peafowl pen so weasel or whatever stops taking her eggs! Here goes nothing. Sure hope it feels like 70 out there right now. doubt it!

btw, I work across from ft lewis. drive by your way too many times a year. ^_^

That's a long drive. I wouldn't want to do it everyday. On the other hand, I feel like I never get to leave my home. I stay home and watch my step-daughter and babysit a 20 mo. old, 8 year old and a 10 year old. My daughter is 7. I think I'm going to beg my husband to go out when mom takes my daughter this week. I'm going stir crazy.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

tcinmb..lived in CA for 49 years . Moved here to get away from the hot weather (and a better qualty of life) So much for the hot weather part! But I was complaining not to long ago that it was too cold. Just give me 70-75 and i will be quiet!

This was my pond in January. Enjoy the warm weather while we can!
