Another Hot spell

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

sure, happy to pass it on! Heck Mgh, I won't give you just 30 min.... I'll give you the whole 3 hours of it! I didn't want the rain in the first place! But, the storm has been fun. i actually saw a tree up on the hill above me get hit and fall. That was loud. .It actually quit about a half an hour ago. But, the thunder has started up again, so i'm sure it's lighting up somewhere around here. I'm sort of surprised we still have power, lights have flickered a few times, but is still holding up.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

You're doing cuttings right now? lol! a true night owl!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

So, I wonder if we're going to get as hot tomorrow since this storm wasn't really supposed to hit until tomorrow?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well, I don't hear my wind chime anymore, so I think our wind died down. :o( My DH is helping a friend haul hay tomorrow....I sure hope we don't get lightning then! Don't want them in the middle of a field during that kind of storm!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That would be bad. Hopefully that's not the case! Who knows what tomorrow is going to be like though, this has been a strange day. I just looked at the thermometer outside, it says 71 deg. Bizarre

Eugene, OR

mgh, hopefully it will all blow through tonight. I'm getting rain now, not heavy but I hope it does enough so I don't have to water in the morning.

redchic, I have the cuttings rooting in pots. I just didn't want them to get drenched. They only have a few leaves and aren't very strong yet. Had to wait a really long time before I could put them outside. It was way to cold for them, in fact I had them on a heating mat to get the roots started.

Eugene, OR

My cats are NOT liking this at all. They want it gone now.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That's the way my dog would be. She hates loud noises...fireworks, thunder, me yelling at the kids. LOL

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Will have to call my folks in Corvallis tomorrow and see if they heard the thunder. Was just out with the dogs and it's beautiful and quiet. The temps have cooled down, but it's still warm.

I don't know how hot it got here today, but it was probably in the 90's. My property is a meadow surrounded by mature fir, cedar and big-leaf maple, so I do always have a place for a break. And there were nice breezes this afternoon. Of course, the fact that I was home in shorts and not at work was what made it delectable. Got lots of shade gardening done this afternoon. Now I'll have to get up at the crack of dawn to work on the sunny spots. Grrrrr.

Hope you all survive the storm. We are supposed to get storm activity tomorrow night.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Sherry. Yes, it's pseudocamellia. Wow - you guys are sounding like we do on our weather thread - play by play!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Fun to do when there's something like a good storm going on!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Unfortunately that storm didn't do anything to cool us off for today :-( But, it was fun. Did your TV come back yet Sally?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Nothing last night here but warm, sweetly scented air (Styrax X3)!
This morning, the birds were arguing over the sprinkler, and the crows were engaged in a game of "drop the yogurt container at the top of the roof & watch where it lands". They are truly whacky birds...
Promising to be HOT again - out to do the weeding & watering the veggies.
It is trending toward cooling tomorrow (70-75°) and this week should be more tolerable. But I am so thankful for the heat: beans & tomatoes in the near future.

Eugene, OR

Yes the TV came back. We had lots of noise, a beautiful light show. But no rain. Had to go water this morning. Like Katye I am hoping this heat helps the tomatoes, something good needs to come from it.

I'm sure the Olympic Trial people that are in town don't like it much. It's 80 deg in the shade on my deck, so it'll be a scorcher again and there isn't much shade where the venues are taking place. Plus thousands of people, I'll just watch the highlights on TV. My boys ran track in high school, so I did my bit years ago. The older I get the smaller my comfort zone gets.

Our birds don't do anything that interesting!!

Yep, I agree. I wish my birds were a little more entertaining like that. However they do think that my plant tags are gifts to them. Glad to hear that your TV came back. But, we weren't so fortunate as to avoid fires. Don't know how many we have yet, but they can't get that big. All they can do is make a run to 5000' and then the snow will put them out in real quick hurry :-p It was smoky driving through Phill this morning. Can you see all of it from your place?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Cooler a bit today. Only 87 here in Silverton. I actually got a lot done in the yard today as I started early and we have had a cloud
cover most of the day. Had a light rain for a short while..now we have some thunder to make things interesting. I would like more rain.. so I can take a break from all this additional watering..but so far..I will be dragging the hose around again later.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

well, maybe you'll get what we had here yesterday. that lasted for hours and was fun. But, apparently i'm the only one on the thread that got much rain from it. the only thing that i'll have to water even today is what's in potts. When I left for work this morning everything was still quite saturated.

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Bellingham was pretty warm, too.Over 80 both yesterday & today.Too hot for a SE AK rain forest guy used to a hot day being 70.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

hahaha That sounds great to me! either one, 70 or 80! But, I think we'll be headed back that way tomorrow. How are things over your way? Is this getting to you as well?

Thorne Bay, AK(Zone 6b)

Much too warm for me,but I took a trip with a friend to the Mt Baker ski area yesterday.Only about 70 there with lots of snow left yet.

Well today, in the shade of the Ceanothis, in front of my window, on the South side of the house, it is now 95.4 degrees. Glad I got some of the weeding out of the way earlier this morning.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

My, Robert, you are pretty warm up there!
It is still very hot here. At 100 degrees right now in the shade!

It's hazy here. I thought it was still this crazy weather. I didn't hear anything about fires, where are they? I've been out all day, just sat down to rest up so I can get dinner. I think it's starting to cool a little, either that or I'm getting used to it. Now I'm not sure if what I see is cloud or smoke.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

I was wondering the same thing, Sally. Wondering if there are forest fires around or just cloudy. But I don't smell anything and I know what it smells like since I used to fight forest fires years ago.

Eugene, OR

Well, aren't you a brave one! Thank you for helping out. I've been close to fires before, so I know that smell too. My family lived near Yosemite (DB still does) for a long time and we learned about fires. He is in the middle of a lot of lightening caused fires right now, but nothing close to him. They've been going for over a week and some have caused a lot of damage.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I don't think that they can get big enough to cause much smell or smoke for that matter, wet trees..... hmmm...... From what I've heard from one of our looksouts so far (I used to be a lookout and still do occasionally, so I know a couple of them) is that there's mostly just single burning trees. Not much that can be done about them at this point. The majority of them are up near the cascade crest, several between lowell and mckenzie, and quite a few in the umpqua valley. so, that's what they said. just single trees scattered all over.

I'm jealous ned... it looks like a great day to be at Mt baker.

Daisy, that sounds bad! I lived in corvallis for a few years and usually it and Eugene were pretty close. But, it just seemed like every now and then some inversion would get trapped over the area a and it would be HOT either that or flooding (I lived there during '96 and '97 weather issues) Today I only saw it reach 93 outside, but the clouds started coming, still in the distance, in shortly there after to threaten with a good storm again.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

It's been hazy like that all day. It sure looked like smoke when I left for church this morning, but didn't smell like it. Looked really strange.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

oh, if anyone likes to stay up on where the lightening is at this is a good link to check out. It usually only picks up on strikes that have touched down and is updated every 15 min. I think. There are some closer range maps, but this is more accurate than some of the others. http://www.weather.com/maps/activity/golf/uslightningstrikes_large.html

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

So..... are we going to get it again tonight? hmmmm..... from the map it looks as though it's going to happen. Maybe I wont have to water again!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Looks like they are east of us.

Eugene, OR

Just got a Thunderstorm Alert on the TV. For Lane and Linn Co. Here we go again, maybe.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ohhhhh fun fun! I'm still in eugene yet sally, so you're seeing it ahead of me this time. But, i'll be driving into it here soon. Maybe I'll finally get my windshield cleaned off?

Eugene, OR

I haven't seen anything yet, just that warning. I didn't catch the time span and never saw it again. It's overcast and cooling off nicely, maybe I'll get a good nights sleep. :-)

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Haven't seen or heard anything up here, except for the telltale blue color in the sky. It's almost dark now. I'm pretty sure it'll rain because I watered well today.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I expanded that snow in the mountains picture to view during the sweltering afternoon, and it actually did make me feel a little cooler!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That's awesome maury! that's good it worked for you!

Well, the lightning is sounding off again. It's not overhead.....yet! but boy is it steady!

Eugene, OR

And it's going which way?

Loved the snow picture, it looked cool to me. Only in Oregon, shorts in the snow.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ummm.... it seems to be moving down the valley again. It's not quite as "booming" tonights but so far it's all one right after the other. And that stinkin' rain again! Sorry, but I wasn't missing it yet!

Eugene, OR

We're still waiting. I have Weatherbug on my computer and it just chirped at me....to give me an alert for severe thunderstorms. It goes by zip codes and ours is a large one, so only time will tell.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

haha.... hopefully maybe, as of yet, this one seems a little weaker. But, hopefully it will make it too you!
