Another Hot spell

Eugene, OR

Well the lightening got here. Not as bright as last night, but impressive.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

wow, that didn't take too long at all. Any rain with it this time around? I had some, but it wasn't a downpour..... at least not yet!

Oh goody, the thunder is the long rolling kind. I like that better than the one that tried to knock me off the couch last night. Lol

Eugene, OR

No rain. But the wind is kicking up, the trees are tripping my motion lights.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

hahaha. but, being knocked off the couch sounds like a better story! makes me laugh thinking about it! So, far I don't have that much wind, but I sit in a little valley of sorts that seems to protect from the winds that are higher up.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

if you look at that lightening map right now, you and I seem to be the last place left in western oregon getting hit. what a distinction!!

Eugene, OR

Did someone plan this as a special treat for all the out of towners we have visiting? It's putting on a fairly good show, it's talking good now. And there's a few sprinkles. Counting between lightening and thunder it's still a ways out.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

wow, maybe i should go outside and check it out again. Definitely a show for all. At least they're figuring out that it's not always 70 and sunny year round here! the hard way to learn it too!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

i'm trying to upload a short video that I took yesterday during the downpour, just to show how loud it was (the rain that is) but it's taking forever. It's intersting for those of us that live here. It was too light out still for the camera to pick up on the lightning. The video that I did get of the lightning is too large of a file to upload...... according to the computer that is!

Eugene, OR

That's a neat map, shows almost all of OR on thunderstorm alerts. What a pass time, watching the weather go by. heehee. night night time, we're taking Mom out for a ride tomorrow.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ahhhh.. have fun with that. maybe my video will be loaded by then :-p I agree sleep needed. The storm is finally dying down, so that will be easier to accomplish now!

Eugene, OR

That would be something to see, or hear. I'll see if you managed tomorrow. I don't have a video camera, so I wouldn't have a clue how to begin.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I don't have one either! just a digital camera that happens to be able to take little videos. it took me a while to figure that out lol

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

There was supposed to be some of that in the foothills here, but I heard nothing. I think it must all be concentrated farther south . . .

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Okay - tonight has been distant rolling thunder since about 7:30. I just took the dogs out and the sky is lit up with lightning about every minute or so. I can't see the actual lightning for the trees, but that's just as well.

That would explain the lights flickering for the last hour or so. There was a little rain earlier, but not much - and it's still VERY muggy outside.

Here's a link to the komonews weather blog with pictures of some of the lightning in the area south of Seattle from last week:
http://www.komonews.com/weather/blog/22711519.html?blog=y

And on the front page of the komonews website tonigh:
SEVERE WEATHER ALERT
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Central King County and Central Pierce County. The warning says large hail or damaging winds are imminent or occurring, and urges those in the storm's path to stay indoors.

Anybody else? Gordon, Kate?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow. This made the news. Sounds like it's affecting the people 10 miles east of me relatively heavily. Supposed to be thunderstorms through the night. The lightning continues . . .

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

It was shortly after 5pm when I hear the interupt from the NWS about thunderstorms travelling with hail from Cedar Falls to Snoqualmie and North Bend. Blew my mind, as I had never heard an interrupt like that before.

We had pouring rain starting about 8pm tonight. With thunder from about 7pm.

Today the weather reminded me of living in Georgia. Heavy rain, lightning, thunder. At dusk in Georgia, we could sit on the front porch and watch lightning on the horizon every night during summer. It was amazing, like watching a place that had to have forest fires everywhere.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Wow, sounds like a fun night to me! That is assuming that the damage isn't much. Is it touching down or is it mostly sheet lightning? I ran into one of my friends that lives between Sally C and I and during last weekends storms he was hit with hail that he said was between nickle and almost quarter size. He has/had a green house that was really nice. part of it was glass and the other half was plastic with a good metal frame and both sides of it were ruined by it. apparently it shredded (as he put it) the plastic side and put so many chips in the glass side that it was translucent and cracked. hopefully you don't get that!!!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

I would like some of that rain. we are having lightning flashes, but no precipitation whatsoever. The hail sounds scary though.

Now they get to enjoy the fun we had! Hopefully no damage of course. A friend of mine in Pleasant Hill had damage to her house from walnut sized hail! Nothing major, just a pain to get repaired. I looked at the komonews link, awesome pictures!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm so glad to have missed out on the hail part. I agree, those pictures are great!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Finally, some real precipitation in the wee hours of the morning. I think the lightning was sheet lightning - it lit up the whole meadow. I couldn't actually see it because of the tall firs in my way (probably a good thing). At about 1:30 there was a big flash and clap of thunder simultaneously overhead.

The dogs were up and down all night. Mine usually aren't scared of noises, but these had them nervous.

And walking into my building downtown this morning, more thunder. And it's still pretty humid - the temperatures haven't broken yet. Keep an eye on that blog I posted above. There are likely to be some good pictures.

I'm with you, AD, this feels like the south.

Eugene, OR

That's the same thing I was thinking when we had it. It was hard to explain why it seemed so unusual. We just don;t get that kind of weather here! At least not until now. It reminded me of Florida lightning.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

It's just weird!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

few.....I just got home from work and feel like hanging out in the refridgerator! Checked the little temp. gage and it says it's 95.2 at 6 pm. I thought that I was sweating a lot when I was hiking at work!! Anyone else sharing in the fun today? I haven't checked the weather lately to see how broad of a system this one is.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Finally!!!almost 9 pm and it's under 80!! So, it's still 78deg. But, that's just dandy.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

It was warm here - don't know what temp, but not 90!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

that's good. I watched the news though, and it looks like most all of the west coast is supposed to be hot, today and tomorrow... Including you! so, I guess that it's a good thing shtat they're not spot on!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Argh!! I like the sunshine, but 75 is about right for me . . . and for you, working outside, whew!!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yep, I agree. Usually i'm fully aware of how hot and how much water I've went through in a day. But for some reason today.... all that I knew was that ' it seemed pretty warm out' lol. I didn't realize until just a few minutes ago when I was getting my pack and lunch together for tomorrow that I had went through 3 quarts of water and 2 of gatorade! Wonder if I'm going to get much sleep tonight :-p The upside is the none of my crew really complained that much, so I guess that's how it all got by me without much ado.

I definitely agree with you about the 75 though. The sort of sad part is that I have relatives from Texas coming to visit for the next 5 or 6 days and it won't be much of a repreive from the heat for them, which is about half the reason why they visit.

Eugene, OR

Today wasn't any better. Went out to do watering early this morning, probably have to do it again tomorrow. At least the smoke is gone and it wasn't so muggy today. I'm a 75 deg person too.

redchic...have a good time with your company. Hope you're getting some time off work to spend with them.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

oh yeah, I'm glad that this hasn't been nearly as muggy, but the lightning sure was interesting! I think that today is supposed to top out at 90! strangely enough, that sounds good.

Thanks for thinking of my company and I Sally! I might get Saturday off to visit with them. THat will be really good! One of the first things that the said yesterday was... "Holy Cow, this isn't right. This was supposed to be our break from it (the heat)." However they'll be here when things are supposed to be getting back to normal, so that's good too.

Eugene, OR

Yeah, but it's supposed to be in the 90's tomorrow. I've trying to finish a project outside and I just can't handle heat anymore. Had problem when I was younger and it's only gotten worse. Thank heaven for A/C! Today wasn't bad, at least in the shade. Wonderful breeze almost all day!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Well, hopefully in a day or two you'll be able to finish your project. I thought that I read that it was supposed to be only 80 or 85 on Monday. Hopefully that's the case. Yesterday ended up being pretty good for my crew and I, warm but not too bad since I had option of where we went to work at. It's sort of sad that this is where the crew and I went to work to beat the heat.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

it was only 82 or 83 at the warmest in that area yesterday.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Beautiful! redchic01. What do you do for work?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I supervise mostly youth crews (sometimes inmate and wildnerness crews) on building, maintaining, bridges, and clearing trails. Occasionally other projects like building or removing structures out in the woods. Anyhow, it's a great job for the scenery! But, not always so for the weather!!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I lost half of my decorative grasses I transplanted last month to the heat. I don't like it when it gets above 80 and 85 is too hot, at about 95 I go into torpor.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Not to mention with the cold summer when the heat hit everything bloomed at once so my allergies are killing me.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That's too bad Zhinu. Hopefully it will pass soon since it seems to have hit at once. Definitely the downside of living in a area that grows everything including the mold!
