Hello fellow Californians....let's introduce ourselves! #2

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Too funny QG, miss ya, and all our other friends. : - )
Busy trying to help at PP, but haven't really been helpful. So now I just take photos, and I've been trying to get the inventory straightened out for a week and still haven't gotten it done!
ACK!
At least not having any girls, I guess I don't have to worry about them raiding my closet. LOL!
I'm more likely to raid my boys closet. LOL!
ES gets the softest T-shirts, and sometimes I swipe them. Snicker, ha ha!
Miss you too Jo, how is the new place coming along?
Got to go.

Well...I have a new Gentleman Friend...and he brought me a dozen long stemmed roses...and all I did was invite him for fried cabbage and cornbread for dinner...seem that we both like the same foods...I guess it's because we've both lived in Richmond, Va. His DD introduced us. She is my friend. I guess I'll look forward to Chocolates next time...LOL

He is a REAL Virginia Gentleman. Jo

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

That sounds so much nicer than my day, Jo. Shake down weekend is always rough.
Hope your Gentleman Friend likes to travel. : - )
He sounds really nice.

We're "just friends"...but enjoy the company...Jo

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Yea Jo! That's great! Have a good time with your friend. (Were they red roses?!)

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Does anyone know what the different color of roses mean as far as relationships?
I have heard,
White for purity,
Yellow for friendship,
Red for Romance.

Any one have any others?

Crossville, TN

Mine were mixed colors...so I guess he has a lot on his mind.

At one time I heard that Yellow roses meant that he wanted to break up with you. Jo

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Found this for you Jules.....

Red Rose
This one is the most obvious. It means "I love you." It represents romance and love.

Deep Pink
This simply means "thank you". If someone you know does something nice for you, a deep pink rose is a good way of saying "thank you".

Regular Pink
A pink rose represents happiness. It's great to give a pink rose to a partner to say, "I'm very happy with our relationship."

Light Pink
A light pink rose means "sympathy". When someone has had a loss then light pink roses is a very nice way of expressing your condolences.

White Rose
A white rose symbolizes innocence and purity. When combined with red roses (see further down), it represents "unity".

Yellow Rose
A yellow rose symbolizes friendship and caring. It's the perfect innocent gift to give to a friend or give to a loved one when you simply want to say "I care". When given to a friend it also means "I'm happy with our friendship."

Lavender Rose
A lavender rose is a symbol of "falling in love". When you give it to a person you are saying "I have fallen in love with you and am enchanted by you."

Orange Rose
An orange rose is a symbol of desire. "I desire you" or "I desire to get to know you better" is the message that orange roses send.

Black Rose
Never ever give a woman a black rose, because Hollywood has, unfortunately, made out the meaning to be "death". These aren't easy to find and some maintain that they don't actually "exist".

Blue Rose
A blue rose is very hard to reproduce or find, although some floral companies are trying to do it naturally. Others just dye them. To some a blue rose symbolizes "mystery" and to others "attaining the impossible". A blue rose given can symbolize the rarity of your partner. You have attained the impossible.

Mixture of White and Red Roses
When you deliver white and red roses together to someone, it is a symbol of unification and unity. "May we always be together as one."

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Sorry Jo, we crossed!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Rose poem for you all!

A relationship is like a rose

How long it lasts, no one knows.

Love can erase an awful past,

Love can be yours, you'll see at last.

To feel that love, it makes you sigh,

To have it leave, you'd rather die.

You hope you've found that special rose,

'Cause you love and care for the one you chose.

Those real gentlemen are hard to find these days.....

today it is raining off and on, the dirt road i live on is wet, so the road grader has chosen today to grade it. the ironic part---the water truck that goes in front of it to keep the dust down is spraying the wet road. our tax dollars at work !

Crossville, TN

LOL At least someone has a job! Jo

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Yep. Like when cities, and residences have their sprinklers on in the rain. Was woken with a big clap of thunder and sound of rain. Jumped out of bed and ran to close the open windows (all of them) and unplug computers. Thought it was middle of night it was so dark and saw it was 6:10! Burned hillside mostly stable for now, just a little ash flowing with rain. A friend who works for the new City of Wildomar called and he will send someone to assess the situation at our older neighbor lady's home which was closest to the burn.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Yeah, it's raining here too, and everyone is cranky or so tired they are sleeping. ES is out at the PP, because some people actually like to come out in the rain. DH had to go up north to pick up a load of honey? I think they are still making honey off the blue curl.
Me, I'm in bed again. Can't deal with the temps, or the wet.
We are going to have a Green CA Christmas this year. Positive note. The trees are getting another shower, they get awfully dirty this time of year. : - )
Was surprised to wake up and see the rain. Glad I got the dogs a warm cozy spot fixed up.
Feral cats are on their own, inside cats are nobodies' fool and are inside, sleeping where it's warm.
Shermie, at least the county grades your road. They usually wait til the day after it rains to hit us.
Then we get the washboard road back after a day or two. I'd be a lot happier if they'd get around to widening Scott Rd., and putting in our fire hydrant. DH says if we ever get any money, (from the County, who used our local tax dollars improving roads in other communities), Scott is first on the list to be fixed. I hope they do it before anyone else is injured or dies. : - (
QG, I really hope you and your neighbors don't have any problems with your burned out slope.
That'd be the pits.

Well, those of us in Orange county are loving this! Usually it rains to the north of us, and to the south of us , while we stand on our porches looking for it. This storm is hovering right over us, finally! Of course, I'm retired, so I don't have to be on the freeways. LOL!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

You already did your time on the fwys, OCCAROL. Usually we get passed by too, but not this time. We need the rain. Even it causes me pain. :- )

Yea, a week or so ago when the news was talking about 'the rain' in LA we saw but a few drops. Although we received some this time, it still was not near what San Diego and LA got. I am also glad I am no longer doing the freeway commute - rain or no rain. Not enough rain to have any problems here, thankfully. You guys get your dirt roads graded? No way. no city or county comes down our road and it does become very rutted during the rainy season - even more so after all the fire trucks left. Thankfully one of our neighbors has a tractor and he brings it out on occasion to smooth out the road. The rut that forms where the dirt meets the asphalt of Grand Ave. is near impossible to keep filled though, any season.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I hear you QG. Was talking to weegy and checked our weather report, are you up for a Pumpkin Party seed/plant exchange next Wed or perhaps Thurs? Thursday should be warmer. I'll get in touch with anyone else who wanted to attend. Hoping our newbie Shernie can join us. : - )
LMK if you want to come, and what day works best for you all. Planned on having a bring your own lunch, but the wasps are ferocious this year, and I'm not so sure it's a good idea, but will ask DH about it since he's been baiting the traps.
QG, you got to remember that the old wagon road crosses our farm, and DH's g.pa used to grade all the dirt roads around here. Not to mention driving the school bus into Perris after picking up all the kids around here. I know what you mean about that pit where the pavement meets the dirt at Grand. OUCH! My poor hinney. Even pea gravel doesn't help. Sigh . . .
I haven't checked the rain gauge, but will tomorrow. I believe we got more rain here than you did QG. : - |
Nice of your neighbor to grade the road for you! : - )

Our dirt road is county maintained, not sure what that entails but has something to do with being accepted into the road system for eventual pavement, i think. most of the dirt roads around me dont get graded.
dont know what day would be good for the seed/pumpkin party. would like to attend but spend a lot of time babysitting the grandkids. my DD works and goes to school, is a single mom, so i help her anyway i can. would be nice to get out and talk to adults !!!

Wednesday would be best for us.

Love to see you all,

Wednesday OR Thursday as of right now, but we are down to one car so..... School starts at 7:30 and I need to pick up DD at 1:30, but school is not far away (EHS) at Bundy Canyon and I15

weegy-have you talked to SW? is she doing better?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I haven't talked to her today, will call her this weekend and let you know.

thanks.

Shermie, your gkids are always welcome. I like little kids. : - )
Sorry about the hoped for PP didn't come through. I do appreciate all your kind prayers, dmails, emails and phone calls. For those who somehow missed it, I was really, really sick with the flu.
My immune system doesn't work well and it takes me a long time to recover, but hopefully the worst is over with. The fever broke, and I'm starting to be able to get a few things done. I'm taking it very slow, and pacing myself.
While I liked the rain, I didn't like being cold. I have a bad feeling that the pleurisy is going to come back unless I keep myself warm. Thank goodness for the warm weather this week. I have to collect a bunch of bad caterpillars from my gh. At least I'll be warm in there.
The other big deal is that my lap top was giving me the blue screem of death. I miss you all when we can't chat. : - (
Lucky for me, my ES was able to work on it. It seems to be a software problem and doesn't want to hibernate. LOL.
It's always something. Anyway, most of you live close enough, we can try to get together when we can. You all are always welcome to come pick through, or help me harvest seed.
Sylvia, still got those seeds you wanted.
Shermie knows some of what I got, we are going to visit. The road is graded because it was a road before they started developing in the late '80's, Shermie. If it wasn't on the map they used, it is considered to be a private road, and the property owners are expected to keep it up and maintain it. I won't drive up Daily Rd., which is not county maintained and steep with a lot of pot holes and wash board. My poor tailbone couldn't take it. Shermie your road, and one of ours has been graded by the county since DH's grandpa quit doing it. The new roads in the new housing developments are paid for by the developers. At least that is how it's supposed to work. Before we became a real City, the County took that money, from the developers, which was supposed to stay in our community, and used it in other areas of the County. It's still a bone of contention among us old-timers who've seen the quality of our life deteriorate with every new development they build. Sigh. . .
QG, I got to show you what those danged gophers did when they encountered my Society Garlic. It would make you chuckle at least! LOL!
Sending photo of Jack O'lanterns my son carved. He carved one for his ex gf who says they don't do that in Austria, where she is studying German language. I think he misses her.
Better go, and I can't wait for the time change next Sunday. I want my hour back!
Don't forget to vote tomorrow. Our family all go together, to vote. Of course our polling place is just across the street, but still car pooling is a good thing. LOL!

sw-thank you for saying the gks would be welcome. that is very nice of you.
with just the little bit of rain we recd last week the weeds are coming up with a vengence. at least i am learning what mustard, cheeseweed and some of the others look like first starting up.

I try to vote by mail as much as i can, sent my ballot back last week so that is one less thing to deal with. now just have to wait and see how the city stuff turns out. sigh....

SW....tell DS that I love his punkins...I read somewhere that if you rub vasoline on the cut parts that it will keep them from shriviling up longer....never tried it though. Jo

Hello! I live in Lake County, California. I am in a microclimate, Western Gardener zone 8. High summer temps with winter lows in the 20's-30s - frosts, no snow. AND CLAY SOIL!!! Outside of 2 years in Oklahoma, I have never had to work in clay. The ground is so rocky too. I was going to put in a new lawn, but its taken a year because I keep going back over the ground with my garden rake trying to remove as many rocks as possible.

I have met my match.

Welcome to DG and I hope you enjoy the likelihood of snow the next couple of days. ORGANIC MATERIAL. That is the only hopeful solution to clay soil. Lots and lots of organic material helps bring in the earthworms and other critters to lighten up the clay. It's been about 10 years and my ground is actually pretty nice now. Lots of small bark, loads from the local tree trimmer and as much compost as I can get my hands on. Look at clay as just really fine sand that sticks together. Give it more junk to interrupt the stickiness and it is nice dirt.
Spading fork wins over shovel, but a jack hammer does help in the beginning.

Welcome....although I am in AZ I hang out here a lot.

I have Clay, sand and calachie...all with in a step from each other!!!

I hope you find a good solution for your "dirt". Jo

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Welcome, Peaches! I am lucky to have sandy soil here, it is river bottom and drains very well, and has fairly good dirt below. I also hear to add lots of stuff to clay. Find a farm/ranch nearby and haul loads of poop. See if you can get some bales of hay - used or otherwise - kitchen waste and anything else that could go in a compost heap, pile it up directly on top of where you want your lawn, even cardboard on top of the soil with all that other stuff on top of it. Besides, lawns are highly overrated and costly in time and money to maintain!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Welcome Peaches,
How well I know the OK clay. You will have to amend your soil as explained above, but the good news is that clay is very good for water gardens. : - )
When my YB#2 built his pond he actually brought in clay to make his big pond.
The folks here at DG, are always helpful and it never hurts to ask.
Happy to meet you, and please explore the other threads on the CA forum.
You may also find inspiration in the Water Gardening forum. (I might have the name wrong for the forum, but I know there is one.)

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! SingingWolf - I have been planing a water feature so this is very good news! As far as organic material, I am considering just planting cover crops that will be tilled in for the first 2 years...but I love my flowers...So, maybe I'll bring in some good stuff and use raised beds (not my fav, but if it will work...) for the time being.

A home without a garden is really just a "house-in-waiting"!!!

And, today is my birthday - so I will indulge and pick out something pretty to grow this spring.

Crossville, TN

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.....(sung in Edith Bunkers key). Would you like some gourd seeds?? Jo

A very happy birthday and may you have many more with lots of flowers !!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Happy Birthday justpeaches, it is almost over now. Just got on the computer and decided to see what is happening. Clay soil here too, DH made me a raised bed and I am enjoying planting now. Almost time to get my veggies started too. I extended a small flower bed today and couldn't believe how many small rocks I sifted through. I'm beginning to believe they do multify. LOL

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

justpeaches, I have lived in our current home, which we had built 10 years March 3rd. I have raked and removed rocks every year from my gardening area every spring and beginning of fall. They just just keep rising from who knows where. They are getting smaller but they are still there.

I compost, raise worms for worm castings but my main salvation has been raised beds and pots. One problem in Las Vegas is tree roots. Because of the heat, and very little humidity, the roots will go anywhere they can find moisture. The main culprit is my neighbors trees sharing our property line or the street scape trees. This past week I found, with the help of two very strong Hispanic workers, a street scape tree root in my main front landscape area. I compost in spot areas. I just dig a hole and place my scraps. the worms follow. I do have a main compost area but also spot composting just spreads the wealth. And I use more mulch than I do water.

I have never gardened in clay since I have been in Las Vegas since 1960. Moved here from a small mining town in Nevada close to the Utah border.

I will see you at the round-up. Sharon. Also know as Mother Winter. This is a great group.
PS:
Also there is a forum on raised gardening. A god sent present for us with terrible rocky soil.
