Not to mention bad backs. LOL!
Happy Belated Birthday, Peaches. : - )
I'm still groggy and jet lagged and hungry for food I can eat! LOL!
I'm glad you are planning on water features, I love our fish/turtle pond.
I was just thinking last night how happy I was that the guys cleaned it out before we left. I heard the frogs and toads singing last night, so breeding season is upon us. I won't clean the pond out from extraneous growth when their are tadpoles in there. So we clean it in January, each year, and then cover it with bird netting to keep the herons and egrets out of the fish pond. : - )
Have water lily's to share at the RU. Which reminds me, I need to start the plant trade thread and the food thread.
I'll try and get it done today. : - )

Hello fellow Californians....let's introduce ourselves! #2
Our neighborhood sounds like a B movie what with the sounds of frogs. And no one has ponds! Dogs brought a dead one in couple weeks ago - lovely!
Frogs don't care about no fish ponds, any puddle will do! LOL! : - )
Hope you like them serenading you to sleep at night, QG. : - )
I could have done without the one the dog drug in, though.
It's so good to be home!

Glad you are back, safe and sound. Let me know what you need help with for the RU!

Been away from DG for about 5 years! hard to believe.
but I am back! I will try and post some photos of my gardens soon
Welcome back Jeff. Sharon from Las Vegas.
Well gee, Jeff, in case you're heyoka, like me, (Lakota, Sioux for backwards or contrary), you work backwards sometimes. : - O
Welcome Back Jeff! : - )
Now I already mentioned that on a different thread, so just ignore it, and I'll add you to the mix. : - )
This really is a great group of folks and you'll really enjoy the day. : - )
Now if only we could get some of the others who pop in from time to time to join us, well, that would be grand, wouldn't it?
We plan on having a good time, and the weather had better co-operate! Or we'll move it inside the Bee Barn. If anyone has allergies to bees, please let me know. : - )

Thank you Sherman99 for welcoming me and showing me the way to meet my fellow California gardeners.
Hello everyone,
I'm from La Quinta, about 30 minutes outside Palm Springs in the hot California desert. Raised by an avid gardner, the desire to be in the garden, hands dirty - unfortunately, I never left the amateur/beginner stage. I'm eager to learn by reading and interacting in the DG community focusing on perennials and annuals that are easier to care for and drought tolerant as my CRPS prohibits me from gardening as I once might have. I truly would like to learn from those with wisdom and experience now that I'm old enough to understand to listen and wise enough to have learned that a garden is only sucessful with patience and love. You have a wonderful place here at DG, I'm glad to be a new part of it.

Welcome Ldblnd! Glad to see you on board. I also consider myself a beginner and there is much available to learn here on DG and the folks are so very friendly. It is easy to make friends with everyone all over the world.
Hope to see you at the Round Up - not too far from you.
Lynda
Hey people, new here, been lurking around a few gardening forums trying to find one that's good and decided Daves Garden looks good!
Bought a brand new house in San Jacinto going on two years ago. Finally tired of my dirt back yard so I'm looking for inspiration and assistance. I'm not to impressed with my builder front yard landscaping either so I'll be working on that also. Been looking around town for plants that I like so I'll probably be over in the plant ID forum pretty often!
Looking forward to hanging out!
Thanks,
Donald
Greetings from Oakland! Summer 2010 was my introduction to gardening as I decided to add some color to the backyard in our first home.. We have a small-ish yard that is more shade than not, so I've gotten quite creative with plant organization. Things are kept interesting by two neighbors with very extensive plant selections in their yards, so I get all sorts of random things popping up all the time.
Most of my plantings are a in a large raised bed and a smattering of pots. I started my gardening by just picking up whatever looked unusual in the nursery. I've since fallen in love with roses color-changing roses and multi-colored dahlias so that's what I'll have the most of this year. I'm also a sucker for anything purple. :o)
Nice to meet y'all!
Hello, Newbies...No...I'm not a Californian...but they let me hang out with them...I have attended several of their Round Up's but will miss the one coming up...ya'll shoud sign up to go...I think Sherman has. Enjoy our Garden. Jo
EarlKann - Welcome. I see you are living not far from me. Did you know we (DG) were having a California Round Up this coming April 9th? It is not far from you, in Menifee off Scott Rd. It is a great fun and learning time. We gather, eat pot luck, and exchange any plants/seeds we may have to share. We have folks coming from maybe 5 counties and are meeting at SingingWolf's ranch where they raise Christmas trees and bees. Here is the main thread for the Round Up. There are also threads for food and plants.

Please come join us!
Lynda
Yes, we will miss Jo this year. I forgot to say we get NV and AZ attendees also at the RU.
I will miss seeing you too...and teasing you about your name...(I first read it as GUILTYgirl...and always want to know what she is guilty of) Jo
Welcome Earl Kahn! : - )
Yup, you are going to like DG. Please do come to the RU if you can make it. I know it's short notice, but you'll meet a lot of nice people, go home with cool stuff, not the least will be ideas of what can grow in your area. : - )
QG, is a sweetie, and she has been great about getting the word out about the RU, which is freeing me up to deal with weeds that are as high as an elephant's eye. (It would have to be a baby elephant.) LOL!
Thanks for putting in the link, Lynda. : - )
Jo, our dear RoadRunner is the RU Queen, and she tries to go to as many as she can each year. She's also a famous chocoholic, and chocolate anything enabler! : - )
You wouldn't believe the view of Mt. San Jacinto from our place. : - )
It's beautiful.
Do hope you can join us for the RU.

Hi All,
I'm Sharon. New to Dave's Garden and new to gardening in general. I live in Ontario, California. We bought our house about 2 years ago, and I'm still at a bit of a loss as to what to do with my yards. They had been very neglected and are in pretty bad shape. Right now, I'm kind of dabbling in things. Playing with some orchids. Trying out a variety of plants from seeds. If I can get them to germinate. Waiting for some bulbs to pop up. Experimenting to see what works for me and my available areas and what doesn't. I'm finding Dave's Garden to be an excellent resource with many knowledgeable people. I'm still discovering all that the site has to offer. =)
Welcome Sharon! We're neighbors! Hope to meet you soon.
Welcome Sharon. Good to meet someone else not to far away. I have lived here for almost 7 years now and am still experimenting! You will discover people at DG who can help you with just about everything Gardening and otherwise.
Lynda
Hi Lynda! Thanks for the welcome! I have been quite amazed already at how helpful everyone on DG has been! I love the variety of forums too! Fantastic! =)
Not much you could be interested in or thinking of that is not available here, lol. There are even a few places that are like the psychiatrist's couch....
Welcome sharon
I'm in Hemet been to 2 RU and have found many new friends and helpers in the gardening arena here at DG. It is a very friendly and wonderful place to visit.
God Bless,
Sylvia
Thanks for the welcomes. So far, I've been quite impressed with how nice everyone is. It's definitely a very friendly and informative place here. I'm loving it. And I just found the pets forum! Love that too! =)
Hi all!
I'm not new to DG but I have been MIA for a long time. I started out as a vegetable container gardener who dabbles in backyard fruits. I then went back to school full-time and worked part-time so didn't really grow too many things and had very little time to be on here. For those on here who know me, I am happy to report that I am almost done with my culinary arts program AND I have a pretty nice size plot at a community garden. I have lots of tomatoes growing right now. I also planted some beans, chili peppers, cukes, and eggplants. Just the usual. I also started my own business as a personal chef and slowly building up a clientele. It is slow because I have to fit them into my school schedule.
Anyway, summer is here and I only have 1 class this summer. So, I'll be on here more often. I'm looking forward to meeting new faces and getting reacquainted with the old.
Happy gardening!
Quyen
Welcome home, Quyen~~! Jo
Welcome back Quyen, noticed you were missing. Where are you going to school? DD's good friend has been looking into culinary schools and was interested in AI (Art Institute) of San Diego, I believe. DD has also looked at AI (North Hollywood), but for Game Design. She has decided on Westwood in Anaheim though and if there is a Culinary School in your neck of the woods, it could be possible that the 2 of them could share an apartment. They both just graduated from HS.
I am in the Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management program at Cypress College. It is a community college so the tuition is a lot less than Art Institute or Cordon Bleu. It does take longer, though, because there are more students than there are class space. It is a great program though. Orange Coast College is another community college near here that also has a Culinary Arts program.
Thanks for the welcome. I am happy to be back.
hi. i live in the san joaquin valley where the temp here gets up to 113 in the summer! i love to garden and water garden! i have a koi pond thats 2250 gallons and raise koi. i also have two other small ponds where i grow lotus in. i also grow water lillies. i love growing things from seed! the plants must love the heat to grow here! ive had good luck with lotus, lillies, trumphet vines, salvaia, and other heat loving plants. my japaneese maples however, dont like it much and even get hot in the shade! i just moved to a new house with a 10,000 sq foot back yard! lots of room for planting! the yard was bare when i moved in a month ago and slowly but surely its looking like a yard! i have lived in california my whole life. i cant wait to get this backyard lush with plants but it takes time and money so its a process! i just love spring and summer and enjoy watching the flowers bloom. below is a pic of one of my water lillies in bloom. they are beautiful plants!
Gorgeous lily, realsis! I have the same problem with heat here. That is fantastic that you have a koi pond and other ponds! My husband Rob and I want to build a koi pond, but takes a lot of $$ to make that happen, and we just bought our house 2 years ago. All extra money has been going into the house itself, rather than the yard. How great that you have so much room for gardening in your back yard! I have a decent size back yard too (not quite that big though!), and am also itching to have a lush green backyard. Right now, my focus is on growing a variety of stuff from seed, mainly because seed is cheap, and so it'll cost a lot less to landscape my yard (once the plants are big enough to go out).
Welcome to DG! =)
Welcome Realsis! Yep, hot here too, record shows as 115, but have seen our thermometer at more than that in the sun - before it broke, lol. This desert type environment is a challenge, yes. We also have a lot of space, but since I do not even bother to attempt lawn or even ground cover, I have a lot of DIRT showing between plants. I have been frugal, adding plants slowly over the last several years, trying to see what makes it and what does not. I would like a pond also, but have heard they attract wildlife, and other than garden birds (not hawks, etc) do not want to attract too much. Hey, if the gophers and rattlesnakes have to go somewhere else to find water, I am good with that.
Hope you enjoy everyone's company here!
Welcome to all you newbies! : - )
Welcome back Quyen! I was wondering what happened to you.
Hey, RR, Weegy, and QG, been missing you all too! My bad. I haven't been on line much lately for a variety of reasons, but I'm back now.
Since I had volunteered and it's long overdue, I started a new page to this thread. Please click on the link to join us there. I did change the title so as not to exclude some of our pals here in the South West, like our friends in AZ and NV. : - )
Here's where we are going:

Hope to see and hear from you all soon!
