Someone in the photo contest last year had a picture of "Bat Faced Cuphea" which was red and purple-black. It was cool, but i've never seen it for sale around here...

Allison:
You have to work today?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

no I just woke up.... once I am up.... I am up.... bad thing is I woke up 45 mins before my alarm would even go off if i was working

How can anyone sleep till 10 in the morning? The gardens like water before then, especially if they are thirsty.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm an early bird. I woke up late this morning - and that was 6:30am! I'm usually out in the yard by then. 7am the latest.

The alarm is set for 4:45 am and we are up before that. 9 out of 10 times it don't get to go off. Birds start chirping around 4:10

Thomaston, CT

Oh, dear, I am a slug compared to all of you---8 is my usual rising time--but I have trouble sleeping at night--usually stay up til 12 or 1 reading, then toss & turn for a few more hours! Big sales start tomorrow at some of the nurseries around here--but we are celebrating the 4th then, so I probably won't get good choices--hope the day is better--today is DREARY!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I can sleep until 9 or so - until my aching back forces me up.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

well Sherrie I think you were confused... my first post was at 4:15 this morning.... didn't sleep till 10

:)

I even beat you online this morning

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm so not a morning person got up today at 10:15.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

had to go the third page to find this thread - everyone must be watching their pocket books

go these from greers - shipping is much more reasonable than Forest Farm - on the left is kousa moonbeam (a little thin), middle is kousa Radiant Rose (big one), and on the right is kousa beni fugi (nice shape, if you look close the top 10" is broken, either form shipping or me on boxing them - it was not a green break so i think it happened during packaging or shipping). the last two are pink dogwoods with beni fugi suppose to be the pinkest available. Moonbeam features Flowers that will be 8" across. was going to wait until fall to order and when i found them available decided to go for it and get them in the ground.

now just exactly where in the ground is the question. beni will be in the front behind the new rock wall in a yet to be expanded bed with a eastern red bud. r. rose will be by the deck in the back yard which will also require an expanded bed. MB will by the front of the house somewhere and yet another expanded bed. less grass!!

And this is my last purchase - i think - been looking a oak leaf hydrangea and now know i had them years ago at my first home. i think they were harmony. suspects are harmony and snowflake. yes i've done too much research and if they are still at the nursery i saw them at ..........they will be planted on the hill behind the rock wall. i am a weakling..........

Darn it I posted on the wrong thread. Look at the garden photos. grrrrr

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Man, you never stop, do you?!! Good luck with them. Never ordered from Greer's.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Me neither. But the quality looks good. Were they packaged well?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

very well - although i think the beni fuji got hurt in the packing process. they had a wooden frame around the trees and wrapped and taped the branches with newpaper. root ball was in a plastic bag and still wet. think they were delivered yesterday by fedX and put on my front door - very rare a delivery is not left by the garage. just happened to see them looking out a second floor window - glad i worked form home today!

Victor - after the oak leaf's i'm done buying for this year - just got the pre-buy heating oil contract in the mail - OUCH !!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the info Bill ... on the packaging, not on the pre-pay oil!! We are looking into pellet stoves (again, but this time for real).

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

my buddy's brother sells these down around boston - supposedly there is a HUGE back-order on pellet stoves - don't wait to long.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have one. Problem is the pellet price has gone through the roof.

My husband is thinking about an outdoor wood stove. Not sure about your state but NH is going to outlaw them. If you have one you will be grandfather, in and if not you cant have one. Some people are burning trash in them so that is why they are not going to be allowed.

This is my job today

I had heard Vermont outlawed wood stoves for indoor heating ,years ago. The reason I heard was too much smoke and deforestation.
Sort of thought NH would be tha same.
It would seem unlikely if you lived in a rural area, that you could burn what you want where you want.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I hadn't heard of that, Sherrie. Is it the same for wood furnaces? We've had a wood furnace for years that came with the house. It's so old and inefficient that we were thinking of replacing it. Now I am wondering if we can do that.

Sheesh! Perhaps the government is in cahoots with the pellet stove people and that's why wood stoves are outlawed.

Outdoor wood furnaces will be grandfathered. If you have one before it goes into law you will be all set. A construction worker told us it would go into effect in 18 months (that was in May of this year).

People are just abusing the outdoor wood furnaces, burning up trash and stinking up the neighborhood.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yes. I can see where that would happen. Our wood furnace is indoors, in the cellar. Might I ask where you heard this?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just ordered four JI 's from ENSATA
Fringed cloud
Frosted Plum
Greywoods Social Butterfly
and a white one cant remember

Candyce from a construction worker, a freind.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's great, Sherrie. Those guys usually know what they're talking about.

Thomaston, CT

Nice plants, Bill & Jo Ann--couldn't pass on a butterfly bush at HD--it was grown locally, so should do OK. My Cornwall Blue--budded--was weedwhacked by our mowers! This hopefully is tall enough to withstand their whacking. DS just bought a wood furnace to be kept in garage with underground pipes & wiring--he did all the work himself, has lots of trees--have not heard about banning in CT---my neighbors do all have wood stoves, & it always smells like autumn here in chilly weather.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Stopped at a roadside nursery yesterday - 25% off sale - they had a pagoda dogwood called "golden shadows". no price - kid at the stand looked at it - it is not as big as other bushes next to it for $30 and said $20 - 25% = $15. Mine. It is really stunning. check out the link.
