Spring Blooms - Part 13

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

AM sun - a few hours. They also do need good drainage. They grow in the woods around here and they're usually on slopes in dappled sunlight and even a bit denser shade.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Cool! I have mine under a big old tree and it only gets morning light for a little while then it's pure shade.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you guys posted some great photos today.... thanks!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Haven't had an opportunity to visit here much, but Victor your Clematis close up drew me in - absolutely beautiful :) I'll have to make it a point to come back and visit more often, everyone's photos are fantastic!

Re: Wisteria - Thom, you might have lucked out with your Wisteria on sale at HD, probably W. fructescens 'Amethyst Falls' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/56308/ which has been showing up a lot in the past few years. A much better choice for anyone wanting Wisteria - blooms at an early age (sometimes the first year) and not the thug that Chinese Wisteria is http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55392/. PF says Amethyst Falls is only hardy to Zone 7 but I've seen reports of Z5.

Pixie, I am so envious of your "Elderberry Tree", however it is actually a Pagoda Dogwood, Cornus alternifolia http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1771/. I had one of these on my property in Maine and loved the horizontal branching but it was the blue/black berries with bright red stems that I coveted at the end of the season :)

Edited to add: went back and checked out the previous thread - Victor, your Patricia Ann Fretwell pic makes me even more disgusted that the two I purchased in the fall of 06 came up as nothing more than NOIDS, a deep purple and a lavender. Next time I'm not going to make the same mistake, I'll order it from Debbie!

docgipe, your "critter is in a six ounce cup" looks like one of the cuttings Critter gave us at her swap in February - one of the Episcias - yours is faring much better than mine :) I found one of my favorites, Chocolate Soldier, laying on the floor several days later - guess the pup liked it as much as I did, she had plucked the poor thing from the pot!

fantastic photos all. Pixie... I'm glad to see that your sea thrift has become part of the family! Did that just show up at your place on it's own?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No I bought the Sea Thrift many years ago....thanks for the ID on the Dogwood. DH called it an Elderberry so I thought he knew what he was talking about...guess not! LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Sure thing! I love dogwoods... any shape, size, color whatever, it doesn't matter. I have wayyyy to many of them since I feel compelled to buy every unusual one that I see and nurse back to health every one I ever retrieve from the compost pile!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Debbie! Great to see you. Please visit more often. Good call on the cornus. I should have noticed that with the classic dog leaves. I have 'Golden Shadows' and it's gorgeous. The clematis at the top is not Silmakivi. I went by the tag but it's wrong. Trying to ID it.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

How long have you had Golden Shadows Victor? Do you know how well the variegation might hold in a good amount of shade? I really shouldn't get another dogwood (but golden shadows is shrub so to take up less room!) but i've been mulling that around around with some variegated ones for a spot that really quite dark. My argentinean dogwood needs to be moved, but I thinking to wait until fall and that I'd like it someplace that's a little more suitable for a tree...I'm very hopeful it will make it long enough to get tall :-p

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This is the second full year and it's still small. Mine gets a few hours of AM sun only and seems to be doing fine. I think it would lose its variegation if it was in deep shade with no sun at all.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

hmmmmm I guess it's something to thing about them. It wouldn't be much light, but i'd be ok if it were just a little brighter than the next green moss next to it!

You folks just have to read this thread, it was started a day or two ago over in the general gardening forum, so you might have already have seen it. This is one of the funniest things i've seen in a long time, keep in mind it's only funny because everyone turned out all right. there's some chatting after the story as well, but a few of the replies of how those folks reacted when they read it are pretty good.

Thanks Shelly! I just posted there.

It was so hard not to laugh when I was reading that as it was happening! I didn't have a clue what to say so I figured best to stay out of it until later. You're story would've been pretty scary too! Too bad you didn't have your camera with you. I would've loved to have seen what that one looked like being nearly white!

That was cute...posting on a garden site as her first response baffled me the most! Made me laugh too!!!

I just figured that maybe she was in a room with a computer but not a phone?? that's the scenario in the room where my computer is. But, that's just a wild guess.

redchic thx for the link. can't believe she wet heself and admitted it!

I swear I had one of those cats in my backyard about 9 years ago. I did a double take from my upstairs . The cat was on a fallen tree in the pond down back. when i tried to get a picture it leaped 25 ft to the shore and took off. I know what I saw was a mt. lion. Pretty hard to miss the tail. There have been several sightings in recent years and the state always claims it is impossible until some one comes in with vidoe. In Westford they have seen them and bob cats as well. The bob cat is on video.

Ok...this isn't an AA meeting, and I'm not getting into that part of my life, BUT, I've been sober for over 8 years now...so, with that in mind...

I was at a party, 3rd floor apartment, I was crocked to all heck...If someone asked me to identify a daylily, I would have muttered something totally and completely incomprehensible. I sauntered down the 3 flats...taking many breaks, got to the bottom set of steps...and saw a cat, a black cat...I started making that cat calling sound, "Psss, psssss...psssssss..." then, because of my altered state of mind..."PSSSS, I SAID PSSSS..." I know I petted the black cat, until...someone that was following behind screamed, "THAT'S NOT A (expletive) CAT, THAT'S A (expletive) SKUNK."

I got sprayed. I quickly sobered. Last time I pet any strange "cats."

Onto gardening news...

I went shopping, just a little today, and picked up a smaller 2-3' Dragons Eye pine, a rather robust variegated brugmasia, and a begonia for my front porch...'Merry Christmas.' Will post in a few.
