placenciarita,

Very pretty. What is the plant with red leaves, seems to glow?

thanks,
xman

Red Oak, TX

xman, the plant with the red leaves is a chicken gizzard plant (Iresine herbstii) very easy to grow.

Very nice. I am jealous of all the mature plantings I have seen on here. I have quite a few years to wait before mine fill in completely.. Patience is sometimes hard.

Everyone's yards are just fabulous. Blooms in so many colors.

I created another slide show with yard photos the other day.

If anyone has had problems viewing the shows, I've corrected the links that I previously posted. The Phanfare site upgraded yesterday and none of my link were working. Fortunately, I didn't lose the bajillion photos I'd posted there. It's just that the link to point where to go changed.

Janet, all I can say is WOW ....... what a nice place you have ....... my garden is mostly gone now .... our local pestulent deer population has eaten it up ......all of the Zinnias, Black Eyed Susans, Purple Coneflowers and Spike Gayfeathers are grazed right down to the ground.

Thanks James. I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I enjoy it here. I just wish (like most folks) that I had more land to put my plants on. Until we find a place out in the country though, I'm tickled pink with this place.

UniQue Treasures, I enjoyed your slide show and love the picture of the dog getting something from where the bananas trees are growing. I also liked the herb pot and will try making one with bromeliads, it might work.

I enjoy making the herb pots. They do require extra watering though to keep them from drying out.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I have a lot of fun putting the slide shows together.

Placenciarita, how on earth do you get your plumerias to bloom like that? I don't have a bloom YET and my Mom's only gets one little blooming section at a time.

Red Oak, TX

trunnels, I overwinter them in a greenhouse which is kept no lower than 50 degrees. I also follow Dutchlady's advise which is to keep them on the dry side, give them full sun and feed them a well balanced fertilizer .

Gorgeous! I felt like full sun would burn them up but I'll move mine around. :-)

I've been following this thread for a while. I'm so impressed with all the beautiful, lush gardens that are so well laid out.

Janet, I followed the hyperlink and went exploring your page. Love the copper sculptures. The mosquito really made me laugh. If ever there was doubt about everything being bigger in Texas, that should dispell the myth.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

HAHAHAHA Margaret, he was one of the first critters we made. We sure had a great time with him. Thank Heavens they aren't REALLY that big! Glad you enjoyed the shows.

bigbubbles, Have to know what your backyard area is bordered with please? And don't say petunias or I'll cry - got full southern exposure here on my border plants & loved the way yours came up so full. Also how much shade are they getting? LMKP as I'm dying here w/envy over your lovely photos! Should make a spot on daves that if you like someone's garden they could list the plants & the way they were laid out, exposure & etc. Would save me alot of time & aggrevation...LOL always looks soo pretty in my mind but when I plant it just doesn't turn out right.Got tomatoes by the buckets already & cayenne bush that has to be picked twice a week & 20' of lush morning glory foliage that isn't throwing off 1 bloom right now except the purples at the end & I swear the other 2/3 of my garden is on strike from blooming at all. I swear I'm going to enter that contest in Garden Gate magazine ( check it out at gardengatemag.com - nice mag w/no ads & they actually give you the suppliers of the plants they used) where you send them photos &description & they lay out it for you! Or anyone out there up for a challenge - I have 20' of dog - eared fence about 8' out w/ 3 angel statues ( 1 -4' & 2 - 2' statues the 4' is the centerpiece the 2 - 2' ones set on either side about 5' from the center one) & a brutal southern exposure that I want to bust w/ perinials from spring to fall (of course a few annuals thrown in for color) & a cool little area about 20' away w/some shade that is about 15x15 that I need to do something with. Holler at me if you are up for the challenge & I'll send pics as soon as my camera gets fixed. Would like to keep it in the $500 range so send me your small, medium & tall plants choices bearing in mind I prefer pinks, purples & especially true blues. Thanks for the read & the great pics ( sighing!!) maybe 1 day mine will be worthy of posting here! Oh I I've almost paid this house off so I can do anything I please with it.

I'm late, but may I join ya'll. I've just gotten serious about getting the garden put together in the last two year, so your imagination is required :0)

I'm trying to connect larger beds together and form "garden rooms" one after the other.

Here is the arbor and swing inside the pool (still working on it) The roses are new and will top out at 15-20 feet and cover the arbor roof. Plans to replace grass with stone and creepers.

Thumbnail by

Behind arbor is the square garden room, built around old shed pad.

Thumbnail by

Left side of "oval lawn", still see mulch, I'm packing it full of cuttings.lol

Thumbnail by

The picket fence surrounds my pool instead of the yard. The last pic of the rose arbor leads to this "round room" still planting in this area, long way to go and still a mess. The other rooms are still to big of a mess to show, but they look great in my head.lol Hopefully next year.

Cats...In answer to question about border plants, they're impatiens....1300 of 'em. I got a good deal at Lowe's this spring. My backyard is nearly all shady, so nothing I have back there would be suitable for your full sun location. Sorry...
But just so you know....12 hours after I took that photo of the backyard, the 3rd hailstorm of May blew in with funnel cloud and straight line winds. This is what same area looked like. Surprisingly, it has all bounced back, filled in, and looks okay again.

oh my god bigbubbles I would have cried like a baby if mine looked like that before & 12 hours later looked like that! I'm glad to hear they are coming back - dang you are all Texan - I'd have to hide for a week if my DH saw the reciept for 1300 plants! You are right though - full Texas sunshine & impatiens go together about as well as ice & fire. I love the petunias best - but here I can only get the whites to make good borders & have to check them every other day to keep them alive. Have looked at some native Texas plants but I did my whole easement(city's property 20x100') out back w/ natural Texas plants - just bought a couple large packages of seeds & I've got something Texan blooming from bluebonnets & paintbrush in spring to last horsemint in fall so I was looking to do the front w/ something more colorful & exoctic - yankees are probably laughing thinking "Petunias aint exoctic" well down here if you can keep them alive in a southern exposure for the summer I bow to thee - I swear to god I've been through every type from standards to heatwaves to double ruffleds & unless the darn things are white, yellow or lt.pink (and maybe on those) they won't handle the heat & sunshine unless checked all the time. My front border ones were planted in early March (like them to put in as deep of roots as I can)& already going on their 3rd cut back just to keep them going till fall. Well thanks anyway bigbubbles & I hope your garden returns to it's former splendor quickly - mine did last year after they floated around in all that rain last spring -had to cut everything darn near to the ground but had blooms & vegies till 1st frost - picked all my green tomatoes the night before & was still eating them at Thanksgiving. Texas is a harsh mistress on we gardeners but if you can get it to grow here it outta grow anywhere. Happy Gardening to y'all for N Texas

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Cats... can you post pictures AND a graph of the layout? We get some serious heat here and full sun. I probably could suggest some plants but it would be easier if I "saw" the area you are concerned about.

WOW! That's beautiful. I wouldn't want to pluck any of it though and mess up that beautiful arrangement!

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks UniqueT----It grows faster than I can pluck it.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I bet it does. I take it you must do a lot of great cooking. I bet your kitchen smells heavenly with all of those spices being chopped up! Your herb garden is a masterpiece!

Janet

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

What a gorgeous herb bed. Baskets are a super idea too!

Cats.....Those 1300 impatiens were on a rack at Lowe's. I bought 'em for $10. They filled the truck bed and the entire inside too. I think they've changed their policy now, and toss anything that doesn't sell for at least half price....but it was sure fun while it lasted this spring!!!
Here's a photo of approximately same spot that had the hail damage last month. Still have some shredded stuff, but most is recovering. Thanks for kind words...Sandi

vortreker, GORGEOUS herb bed----you do your new state proud!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like a beautiful setting with all the green and tall trees!

Bubbles--What a neat garden!. Makes me miss Austin. I went to UT 100 years ago--:)

I second that--just beautiful.

BIGBUBBLES--The hanging baskets are the best way that I have found to contain Mints

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

What a great idea! I have some mint growing around the base of a potted Meyer's Lemon. Only one....I had lots of 'em and they got away from me. I may have to try that next spring, too hot now for anymore baskets. I do love your raised bed, tho. My little suburban yard is crammed now with tropicals. I'm eyeing a spot where I have some hibiscus, tho. I may try to move them and start a fall garden. Reading... Slow Food Nation....and thinking I'd like to at least attempt a small kitchen garden.
You'd find Austin changed after being away 100 years!!! We used to drive here from San Antonio in the 70's when it was a small funky town. Now it's condos, traffic, and toll roads. Ahhhh...progress!

Sandi..........Displaced Mississsippian

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Sandi, we too used to drive to and thru Austin for many years (eons?) when it was a small town and so beautiful. Then the multitudes discovered it and wanted some of the small town atmosphere, etc. Look what happened!! So sad as far as I am concerned. We have few retreats any more.

Ann

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

bigbubbles, your gardens are beautiful. In what part of Austin do you live? Must be an older part because of the trees. My brother lives in Dripping Springs and my Mom in South Austin. My stepdaughter lives off Barton Springs above Zilcher Park in a house they are remodeling and I am sure I will be involved in the landscaping. Every time I come to Austin I scavenger for rocks for my yard!
Bonnie

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ann...We moan and groan about the traffic, but there's still so many great spots to "get away" that are in the area. And....we're some of those folks who "discovered it" so can't really complain too much!

Bonnie...thank you. We live in Westlake area, so are near all your relatives! Let us know when you're in town again. I can give you some plants for the landscaping you're about to begin if you're interested!

Sandi

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Sandi

Thank you so much. I would love to just come by and look at your Garden and chat about plants! I am retiring in September and am really looking foreward to it. Have been working at the same Hospital in The Woodlands for the past 21 years.
Bonnie

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Bonnie...Maybe it'll be a little cooler in Sept.! Just d-mail me when you're going to be in the area. Would love to have you visit.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Sandi,
Your garden is extremely well done.
