Signs of summer- What do you have blooming?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It means it only blooms every three years, LOL! The idea is to have enough bulbs like you do with the pink surprise lilies so you don't notice, but I just have 2 Crinums, so one year I am without bloom (although the plant comes up, it just doesn't bloom)

There is a botanical word for it, but I forget what it is.

The last bloom of my bearded iris
Stepping out
I saw on another thread it is considered a historic.
That makes me feel old.

OMG! You're kidding? An historic? Are you certain? LOL! I can remember when it was NEW. Now I am definitely depressed! Stepping Out is one of 2 irises I grow. I have enough to have 2 or 3 bloom stalks every year and the iris borers get all the rest.

Suzy

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

Ok another dumb ? how do you make sure they don't both bloom the same year?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, no, sorry, it is just a fluke, I think. One got less sun when it first arrived and that set it back a year. Criunums are also either boy or girl...somehting like that. Mine are all the same, so I can't cross them without pollen from a different kind or sex. Something like that. It isn't where you have to have 2 individuals to get seed, and I have 3 of one clone...it is weirder than that.

Interesting facts about the 3 year bloom. My iris did not all bloom this year, the ones I had divided so I am glad I didn't get them all done.

Gus that is a neat photo, never heard of mothmullen but it looks like a cross between a hollyhock and my Sunny Wind hibiscus! The purple Chaste tree was also planted by Mother Nature. And I do live in the desert, Chihuahuan to be exact. We are the northernmost tip of it!

early bloomer, your foxglove makes me swoon.

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Wow, Beahive - I've never seen that Clematis before, I really like it. Could you post a photo of the entire plant? Was it a special order or just something not grown in my neck of the woods?

Springboro, PA(Zone 5a)

Thanks pgt

Suzy, I always thought they liked some shade too but these are planted where they get full sun from early morning until late evening. It's probably the hottest part of my yard. I started them from seed in spring 07 and planted them in the bed last June.

This one goes thru quite a transformation and you won't believe
the mature flower..Scrumptious! Take a peek at the link.. I am looking forward to the blooms maturing!

I have only had the vine for a short time..so it is is low to the ground right now. As the summer progresses and the plant gets taller...I will post more pictures.

early bloomer. Beautiful assortment of foxgloves. I hope mine will look like that in a few years. They are trying hard this year. Have lots of babies that I plan to transplant here and there in the yard.

The California poppies have made themselves right at home this year. I don't mind as I spent all but the last 18 months living in Ca.
Blending in nicely here in Oregon and they do not seem to mind the rainy cold weather or sharing space with geraniums & roses.

Beahive,
I love the yellow-orange with the blue geraniums. What variety geranium is that?

pgt. This varity of geranium is called 'Johnson's Blue'. Planted in early spring of 2007 and nothing. Thought the plants were gone. Was surprised to see it this year. It is very nice. Glad it showed up.

Chalfont, PA(Zone 6b)

I have Johnson's Blue in my garden too, that I love. The reason I asked, was b/c the flowers on yours look more blue than mine. They started out pure blue early this spring, but seem to be turning more purple as the season progresses. Anyway, lovely combination you have there!

can;t wait until they arrive. One of my favorites from childhood.
They smell so wonderful. My Mom grew them and I remember taking huge bouquets of them to the teachers every spring. They were always a hit!

A new shot of the transformation of Crystal Fountain clematis. Gets better everyday!

Bea, I am enjoying your Crystal Fountain very much. I ordered one this year but I'm afraid it is a wee thing and will not bloom for a year or more. I am sad to say the other 2 clematis I have Josephine and Blue LIght appear to have wilt disease : ( At least I can enjoy yours : ) Here's a picture I got of Blue LIght before it started wilting.

This is Mortimer Sackler a delicate climbing rose. Interesting rose. A bit on the frumpy side, soft petals, big blooms, makes a mess, light scent..but someone needs to love a pink rose named Mortimer! (mort for short!) That would be me!
