dellrose - They just look spectacular against green backgrounds! We have tons of maple seeds in our trees this year. They absolutely cover the grass when they fall. You can see them in this pic.

I wonder if Woody Woodpecker was a Pileated.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

yep!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I think he's supposed to be, but then I think the call might be Acorn Woodpecker. I can't remember where I read that.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Nice pics Nanny...love the action going on there!! That Pileated is so awesome!!

OP..that last pic of the BB is adorable!

Resin, Great "eggsample" of a cliff-layers eggs. They are more pointy at one end so they only roll in a circle.

The pileated shot was cool, Nanny.

This shot is of a Great Blue Heron that caught a huge fish. We watched him for about ten minutes while he tried to eat it. It was funny listening to him slap it on the ground, then spear it again. I don't know if he even got it down. Sorry it's blurry, he was far away.

I believe this is a Eastern Kingbird...Correct me if I'm wrong.

I apologize for taking up so much space on the forum, but today while I was working I heard the most gosh-awful bird sound. It was a very loud grating screech. I looked around and saw a mama European Starling and her baby. The baby, as large as mama, kept following her around screaming for her to pick something up and feed it. So here we go with the series. She finally brought the loud thing to the feeder.

As we were getting ready to leave the sanctuary, we were cracking up because a White-breasted Nuthatch was obviously disturbed by something and was 'enk'ing furiously for like 5 minutes. We walked over to the tree to find an Immature Red-Tailed Hawk just sitting there.

It's just about to fly off in this pic. (after which the 'enk'ing stopped)

Here's where it flew to.

And that last Green Heron shot is priceless! I didn't realize we had Green Herons in my area but I guess we do.

Man, is it ever cold out here tonight, very close to freezing point. I'm sure the hummingbird won't be the first to the feeders in the morning. They'll be hanging upside down in a coma state for sure. I don't know, if that is really true, but I had heard that's what they do, when it's really cold.

PC, Great pics. Love the Moorhen!
Good catch on the Green Heron!

It's not unusual for me to see Blue Jays in my yard. It is, however, not the norm to see a Blue Jay at my safflower feeder. I guess he was really hungry and couldn't find anything better to eat as he didn't seem to be able to access my peanut feeders.
