I have found that the only plant material that works well is impatients, in a shady area. Tried petunias and it did not look good. Alyssum was ok, but dried out quickly. They don't work well for me in hot sun since it is very very dry here. It can be pouring rain & the humidity is 85%
I put a tube with holes down the middle with vermiculite. Also put string from the tube to each plant to wick the water. I also put sphagnum moss around each pot. So I will stick with the impatients since they seem to do well. I might try a second container with wax begonias.
bloom master 2008
very nice!
I spoke with the company rep at the trade show. They now have brackets so you can place the round pots on top of stakes, similar to what Kinsman does. He also said they will be posting planting advice on their website. He wants to look at this thread, so start posting your pictures.
very cool
that's a great container Clem.... very unique
Thanks Onewish! That was an old fountain that never worked and DH converted it to a planter!
thank you.... and I don't know what your plant is... going to have to look that one up... very interesting
that is gorgeous ... can you overwinter it?
Onewish,
Your planters are absolutely beautiful! The combination of plants you've use is awesome. I'm a big coleus fan anyway, but the way you have them all together is really showing them off to their best advantage.
Thanks for sharing the updates with us.
Janet
I actually might skip the spv next year.... they don't get real big for me.... not enough sun, the climate or just my care... not sure
I get so jealous over some of those photos on here where they are huge and beautiful... I have some in reg. planters and they did the same as the ones in these... still alive and grew some... but not that much
the impatients, coleus, torina, monkey flowers, trailing lobiela and that violina .... all did well... the torina is the smallest though... but I dead headed and it just keep blooming
I am kind of disappointed withe the osteospermum I grew from seed... it still has not bloomed... the plants look great but nothing yet
dead heading the petunias and the million bells.... really did keep them from getting straggly... If I remember right last year at this time I was bummed out the baskets looked so yucky
I had to go look.... yes it was early in August

I am glad I used less of them this year... and more of the coleus and wandering jews... now that I know my sunny spots can be coleus friendly ... I plan on using more next year
the trailing strawberry has run circles around all the other trailers....the photo only has two 12" baskets... the trailing strawberry is sooo big it's even covering up the hellebore that is planted in the ground... I will post two photos of these baskets at planting time... I can't believe how big they got
edit - i had the wrong name of the coleus

Great job, Allison. All the plants are thriving and looking wonderful.
thank you.... and I am glad I experimented with the begonias... and planting stuff over the tubers... they are planted so deep it looks as though the plants on top have no effect... and that's good because the 4 or 5 begonias in each are so huge that would have been the whole pot... since I start them inside they were already putting up shoots and i just planted around them
but I think the one on the right only has 4 tubers in it.... they are just huge though
Huge and beautiful I must say onewish! By the way the cereus must come in for the winter, one more plant for the inside junge, lol!
Allison, how do you know which coleus will look good with which others? I find the selections to be kind of overwhelming, even the varieties you had in June were overwhelming! Because YOU do seem to know which ones will look good together! Yours look FABULOUS together!
I don't really.... just put together the ones I like ... so thank you
rosey dawn does have a page with good combos .... I never used any of them though
I'm getting excited about starting earlier this year! :)
I mean this next growing season!

I am ready for spring!
Mee too, so glad someone revived thist??? Getting snow as we speak though, lol, no Spring yet, right one wish????
it's snowing here too
:(
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr and brrrrrrrrrr lol!
No snow here but cold, dank and miserable out there.
It is sooooo cold here.. We really didn't have much of a fall.. Warm to cold this year.. no indian summer. My beds are rough looking.. I can't work outside and clean them up in freezing temps. Well, I refuse to is what I mean. :)
It snowed, now it's really cold. Wish the guy had fixed the patio door LAST week like he was supposed to instead of this week! Allison, do you have lobelia held over? I have lots of your coleus inside in pots.
I had taken some cuttings of the lobelia.... BUT those died due to me forgetting to water some stuff... it's too early for me to remember these things.. when I have all the seeds started it's like clock work to check everything... so the answer is no
:(
I might do the NC farms unrooted cuttings again this year... last year went so well with those... (shared them with my mom & Randy's mom) I just kind of wish they sent more than three in the grab bag of sun coleus... but all the different types of cuttings I got from them thrived
beautiful shot!
Joanna and onewish: Your beautiful containers have inspired me to try the Bloom Master pots next year. Yours are exceptional!
Thanks,
Karen
thank you... I do love them too
Onewish: Where do you buy your coleus? An online source? One you'd recommend? Do you propagate from cuttings? I don't find the trailing varieties locally. I have developed a newfound fondness for coleus in the past couple of years.
Karen
Sorry, I went back and re-read some of the posts and saw that you did some by cuttings. Nice job.
Karen
kq - Rosy Dawn should have their catalog online for 2009 next week and they carry trailers. It's arranged alphabetically so just go to Trailing and you'll see them.
