Great t shirt.
I remember after a nasty surgery a few years back in the spring, I insisted on going home to sit on the deck so I could watch the birds, waterfowl and smell the fresh air. DH helped me outside and I laid there instead of bed. If that didn't make me better, than nothing would.
When I went in for a ck up and compained of not feeling better, still bedridden, etc, the doc wanted to know how I got the sunburn. LOL
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 4
I've noticed I still have lots of Black Chinned hummers, but I haven't seen many (any?) ruby throats in the past few weeks. I was thinking hummers stayed all summer, but do they not stay in TX, or is it just the BC's that stay, or have I just had bad luck not seeing the RT's?
Might be the latter plus the black-chinned. :-)
From the maps in Sibley, you're within the breeding range of B-c, and right at the edge of the breeding range of R-t. So it's reasonable to expect that R-ts will be scarcer.
Resin
Great catch Burn!
you're killin' me Rosie!!!
Gorgeous.
*Jealously clicks on UNWATCH THREAD*
Hee… not really.
We had 2 females fighting it out yesterday...but nobody stopped to pose for pics! LOL
Ok, no human can take pictures that good. I give up! You are super human!
Great pictures! You do have posers for sure.
Ha...you guys crack me up! This camera and lens should be doing everything including the dishes!! It is still a mystery to me on how to use it but the main thing is to keep it steady and that is not always easy for me and I am allergic to tripods! Thank you for your encouragement!
Nanny...My little females seem to get along OK but it looks like I only have a few right now...hopefull the others are sitting on nests!
There are a few males that seem to show up in the late afternoon sun here is one from last night.
They are hamming it up for the camera!
I'm with you cpart! It is just not possible!! lol
Hmmm, is Rose from outer space? Sure, she SAYS she's a transplant from L.A., but that could just be to throw us all off. Rose, do you wear big black glasses like Clark Kent?
LOL, Excellent pics Rose!
Mrs. Ed..LOL...you peeked!
Thanks Pelle..they are not behaving as nicely as they did a few weeks ago!
That's right...L.A. hmmm that is supicious right there....
Wonderful images, dellrose. Anyone who is able to see these exquisite little birds is very fortunate. To have them in your own yard and to be able to view the antics must be such a joy. Privileged lot! As resin said, Australia has no hummingbirds. The tropical north has Sunbirds and we have a vast number of honeyeater species right across the continent, several of which we have in our local area. I'm going to get out and start furiously snapping to share.
Rose those are awesome, great color and details!!! Super job.
Maragret, you have such lovely birds. Too bad about the humming birds.
It is not only to see them, but to watch their speed, the noise their wings make and of course their antics. To be buzzed by one is such a treat!
They are truely amazing little creatures.
I just saw one buzzing my columbines, and phlox. Does anyone know their favorite flowers?
I'm packing my bags and heading over. I've seen film/video footage of hummingbirds and each time I view the images on this thread, in my minds ear I imagine the sound their wings are making.
OP...last year they loved the 4 o'clocks and buzzed them constantly! They are just starting to come up now and I haven't really seen them on anything else except the feeders. I heard they like Cypress Vine also but I didn't get any planted..darn it!
Margaret...It is a thrill to be buzzed by the Hummers..especially the first time it happens each spring..it takes a bit to register to the brain that it is a Hummer. What time should I pick you up at the airport?
Pick me up in 23 hours time. I'll be wearing feathers.
What are "4 o'clocks"?
LOL Margaret! I will be there with wings on my feet (I've heard that expression all my life...now I know what it means)!
These are 4 o'clocks! They reseed here every year and I couldn't get rid of them if I tried! I love them though and the fragrance is out of this world. I think they got their name because them open up in the afternoon (I think)! They come in all different colors too and do great in hot sun!
Thanks dellrose. The 4 o'clocks look similar to what I know as "moon flowers". Must investigate further. Goodnight. It's 11.30pm on Saturday night and there's another thunderstorm making its presence felt. Winter starts in just over half an hour.
I had four o'clocks last year and no hummingbirds went there. They did love my cardinal climber which is like a cypress vine. But it does not bloom until late. I expected to have lots of seedlings this year but I haven't had a ONE (of either cardinal climber or four o'clocks). Sigh.
Margaret, hummingbirds like all kinds of tubular flowers. Sages are really popular, but Burn posted one of them at a Grape Hyacinth spring bulb!! In the fall, I see them make stops along my fence. Trumpet vine, Sweet autumn clematis (which I killed this year when I moved it!!), morning glories, HB feeder, cardinal climber. Rest. Repeat.

Check you D mail, Mrs Ed
I've seen them on Hosta blooms and hollyhocks here too.
Took this tonight, This female was under the gazebo canopy, she was using the cord we had put up last year for a perch, to roost tonight. When I went to let the cat in, she was frantically flying up there. I took a few shots, then close the light, so she could rest.
My hummers are eating the drips of nectar from the closed peony buds!
Thats neat guys!
Sweet shots Burn...would love to know where our Hummers roost!
We are seeing more now that that tree that were in bloom are losing their flowers.
