Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 4

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here is the link to Vol. 3 http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/843035/ .

I still have several Hummers but not as many as a week ago and haven't been taking many shots of them. I was trying to get some action shots of them but have to rig up some hanging baskets or something for a better background. Here is one of my attempts.

Here is a more typical pose.

You truly ARE Dave's apprentice, bringing out your props!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Mrs. Ed...I did buy a small Fuchia and put it in a hanging basket...now to hang it where I can get a good pic! I would love to have Dave's knowledge and steady hand (and all of his gear too)!!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Well if those stinker hummers are anything like the FEW that show up at my house, they won't pose at or near the fuschia. Do you yell at them like I do? HOLD STILL.

I can't WAIT until I get some flowers blooming in their garden so maybe I'll have some more visitors. I swear, they think my water is poison or something. Every time I make water I have to think and rethink the proportions because I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong. Sorry about my whining.

Goldsboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I've started standing about a foot from the feeder so I can take pics. My camera isn't the greatest so I need to get as close as I can and the hummers don't seem to mind after they notice me there.

Beautiful shots guys!

Thanks for starting the new thread Rose!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

If you stand still and place your finger just below the feeder hole, they'll use your finger as a nice convenient perch to rest while drinking.

Resin

Goldsboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Resin, I've done that before at my mom's house. She had so many hummers that she would fill her three feeders twice a day so you didn't have to wait long for a hummer to perch on your finger. My feeders only get a visit every ten minutes or so though.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Cool shots Mrs. Kinsey! I have a hard time standing in one spot for too long so maybe I'll set up a chair or something and try that!

Mrs. Ed...my male Hummers seem to have disappeared today...the females are here but don't know where those boys are! Today is our hottest day so I'm gonna try and rig up some sort of mister for them..I'm sure they would appreciate it!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

No HBs for me for a few days. Seems like your females should be nesting soon, Rose.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Ours are playing hard to get..I am seeing them around but they are not coming to the feeders alot yet. Sitting up on the darn wire!

teases!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Gee Nanny...do you think that line is heavy enuf for that big Hummer? LOL!

I don't know where all the Hummers have gone around here...sat outside this afternoon and waited and waited and waited. Usually there are lots of them and I only saw one pair! ;0( Hopefully they are nesting now?

Orchard Park, NY

What a neat perspective Mrs. K! Were you lying on your back? LOL

Coquitlam, BC(Zone 7b)

lol Mrs_Ed, I know what you mean about the water. I keep putting up a feeder, but the hummers only drink from the few plants I have around. I've seen them hover perilously close to the feeder, but nothing (even in winter)! It makes me paranoid that I'm doing something wrong.

I am enjoying the pictures. Great captures!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Well I was mean today, took down all but one of the backyard feeder, and the one I place in the flower pot, so they would come to me, for pictures. I was sitting just a few feet away. The lighting under my gazebo wasn't all that good.
But it worked. One flew above my head and ruffle my hair a little. Couldn't get a picture of that one shucks. But this one I got.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Very nice pics of the Hummers Burn...great idea on bringing them to you!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Cool Idea!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Thanks everyone
Like you Rose, I can't stand too long on my legs, So need to sit or walk around. Nice to see them come to you for a change.
Nanny it's such a thrill to see them so close, you see their little eyes looking at you, while they drink, and you can see close up all the energy they put in, in flight. Very agile little bird, and fun to watch.

Marlton, NJ

Ha, We should form a club. I can't stand long either.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I can't stand long or lean my head back!

:D

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

ditto here, due to vertigo...boy, we could be in trouble here!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I've been thinking that DH could wheel me along on the dolly and lean me back to see the birds.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL Mrs. Ed! We are quite a group aren't we? I'm getting to where I can't sit for too long either...I hate to think about alternatives!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

ROFLOL . Mrs-Ed
Same here Rose.:))
We should change the name of this thread to "How I manage to take this picture of the bird".

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

HA! Good one Burn.

for me it would be. Sheer dumb luck.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL...for me it would be. An accident!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

HA! The marvelous photos I've been seeing here could never be from "dumb luck" or "by accident!"

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Great pictures. We are starting to get a few up here in the cold weather. (had some nice days, but still cold at night 33' right now)

Have to laugh about the picture taking. You all commenting on sitting, leaning or staying still.
My problem is getting the camera up. I am so busy in awe of the bird (with my mouth agape) that the bird flies away before I even turn on the camera! If I could get the pictures that are stored in my head, they would be som'tin' to see!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I know what you are saying cpart! I take the picture first and awe later. With my recent picture of the chestnut-sided warbler, I started taking a ton of pictures of his backside, just in case he looked backwards. After a number of pictures I ever so slowly walked to the other side of the tree and began taking pictures of the front. I was very lucky that he did not fly off.

PERTH, Australia

Hummingbirds! You lucky, lucky people. I'm green with envy - iridescent green of course.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

OMG...LOL on the dolly Mrs. Ed!! Glad I wasn't drinking my coffee! lol

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

dont' want to hijack the thread, but thought I'd show you my present from my Neurosurgeon.

THIS is why I need that dolly!
