A garden in progress...

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

well done Kassia! :)

I wish mine were as bountiful. Not there yet. What do you fertilize with?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Peg, I just use blood meal, bone meal, epson salts and alfafa tea... (well, I don't trully wait until it's really wet soupy alfalfa... ) and other than that I may just sprinkle osmocote all over ... just a handful for each rose bush....

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Don't forget water - lots and lots of water!
:)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I love all of your roses, Kassia, but the one you are standing beside and Tuscan Sun are my favorites!

Kassia:

One of my other DDs plants a dead fish underneath any new rose bush she plants. Is that one of the secrets, too?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I am serious, Allison. Really. She does. And her roses look wonderful!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wouldn't doubt it one bit..... after the stuff I used to see my grandfather do... it wouldn't surprise me in the least

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Remember, Grandpa always knew best!

^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Same as fish emulsion!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's what I was thinking, Victor. If it was all the same to me, I'd buy the fish emulsion. Perhaps the neighborhood cats wouldn't be so prone to digging it up!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And I would not be thrilled with the fish looking up at me.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I use Neptune seaweed in my alfalfa modified tea... really all I do is blood meal, bone meal, epson salts (generous amount) and alfalfa tea... no I don't wait until it smells...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I just use Mill's Magic - has all that good stuff in it already.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor!!!! I miss you!!!! I never used Mills Magic... what is it???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Organic rose fertilizer.

Very nice - which is it?

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Kassia,
The pictures you posted are beautiful your gardens must be gorgeous. I can't believe the roses they’re amazing.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor, I think its Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale - not sure because I burried the tag and can't find it without really lying on the ground... I am looking at my list... I ordered from Palatine roses... such a gorgeous and healthy plant... really very dark green and perfect foliage..

Thanks Donna... my roses are only on their second year... and I confess that I am just wondering how they are going to behave next year... on such great plants!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

As a young girl my Grandfather woould wake me between 4-5 am to go fishing with him. When we got home we always cleaned our fish first thing. After cleaning them I would take the heads and innerds(SP?) and bury them in my DGM garden or brought them home and buried them in ours. We ALWAYS did this and had huge beautiful gardens. When I got older I did this at my own house several times. Then I got a dog....nothing is nastier than a dog that has rolled in rotten fish!!
I don't do it any more!!!!!

Is your dogs name Stinker.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope.."Tia needs a bath'

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

lol.... lol.... turtle poop should be good... but I don't use it...

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Has anyone used Rose-tone? I haven't ammended my roses with anything yet. Gulp!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I use rose-tone. although i'm no rose expert.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

How do your roses look?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they seems to look the same as if i used regular fertilizer. I've moced to the carefree roses and if the others i have live great. if not i'll stick with these. my main problem was winter die back. and i did "try" to protect them with leaves and compost. to much work.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - I am surprised to hear that in your zone, Bill. I am trying the new Oso Easy roses this year. One Knockout as well. Supposed to be virtually care-free. I'll let you know.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

knockout is what i have. got them last year and really like them. i have the tags at home. pink for the wife and a red one which is more ground cover than bush. that one is covering a nice sedum right now. waiting for the rose to flower and i'll trim it back or move the sedum. sedum could look good in front of a CQ jm

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I use rose tone sometimes when I plant ...

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

I put in some roses for the first time last year. The carefree ones look pretty good now, not to big but ok. I have a small pink one that I think is knockout, that one looks really good. I also put in a few others (can’t remember the names and can’t bend down yet to read the tags). All were end of the season clearances; I lost 4 to winter kill, I think because I didn’t put them in deep enough. I’m just now reading up on how to maintain them. I’m happy that I didn’t destroy them when I pruned them this spring.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Donna, it's all a learning process... from the first roses I planted in 06 I only have one alive! same problem as you, did not plant deep enough... this year I had to replace 3 already - 2 bare root from Pickering and 6 own roots... so it's a game sometimes no matter what you do!

My bigest thing with roses is that you choose one that has the bud union closer to the roots - the canadian roses have a really good root system... Pickering and Palatine...

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the name, I'll check them out. I just assumed I should plant them at the same level as they were in the pots and we all now what happens when you assume. The bud unions on the ones that didn't make it were 2" or more out of the ground. All the others were at ground level or just slightly in. I've had a couple flowers so far and now have lots of buds so I can't wait to see them bloom. I really enjoyed looking at your pictures and now I hoping I can get some to look that good.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ok who is coming over and showing me how to plant my 3 roses tomorrow?

:)

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Donna, someone on the other thread said you buy a$10.00 rose and dig a $40.00 hole... I have experienced that... so I try to get a good hole but since my soil has tons of rocks I do raised beds so it gets me a chance to really mix things... I usually do 1 cup of blood meal, one of bone meal and one of epson salts... them tons of water for the next 2-3 weeks and them I give them alfalfa about 6 weeks later... right now I have tons of alfalfa brewing ... so you give them a good start...

I like planting own roots ... they are smaller and easier to handle... but the grafted ones are so much bigger...

So my dear Onewish, sorry I am far or I would go there and help you!!!! which roses are you planting???

I have 2 threads on the rose forum almost a pic of every rose I have... if they bloomed they are there!

This is the newest - its actually a test rose for Jackson and Perkins - I got all 4 and 2 are doing really well, tons of blooms, one is doing fair, and one is bad... don't have much growth... they have not contacted me yet... so I don't know what to do... I may just name it after myself! what a big head I have!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that is really cool Kassia..... you have test roses

I ordered 2 from JP Mardi Gras & Disneyland... my order was lost & delayed with some kind of system changes they were making so they sent me Dream Come True for free

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Kassia:

That's a beautiful rose. You should name it after yourself. I love the colors of the bloom, cool, yet fiery at the same time. And thank you for all that planting information. It is, as always, invaluable!

Yes it is invaluable. If you can remember it all.
