Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.44 Visit with Friends

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Well I am back( now don't say oh no!) The storms missed us again thank God at least till Mon. Going to the doc about my ear and Scotty for his potassium and diabetis Wed. He twisted his bad knee when he fell so have to see about that. He has done real good this last 4 weeks about exercise and diet. He went from #2hole to #5 hole in his belt so good!!! Hope you all have a nice long weekend. I found me a double pink knockout rose for my grandchilderens memorial rock garden--accually I am making two of them. I will have to post pics when they start getting full of blooms. My irises are all going to bloom this year. I moved them 2yrs ago out of the shade garden and hardly any bloomed last year so will show you some. Hugs BEV

Evening all, just got home, not quite - made a little detour in the neighborhood...my day was perfect (might change in the next hour or so) lol..

Left work and dropped Suzanne off in Barrie, she's picking up her new car this aft. - dropped into Carole's to pick up brushes and the pattern packet for homework on the Muskoka Chair I picked up this morning..although Carole knew I was coming, her mother fell ill and no Carole so continued my trek to Midland..however, on my way home going thru Hillsdale I notice that the little country bakery was opened for the season, of course they were just taking the best goodies out of the oven that I had to purchase some for me and some for Bernice/Cliff...got to Zellers and picked up one of those sway seaters for front deck..brown/beige so it will match the linoleum rug I painted last weekend for out there, so that was great..dropped in to visit Greg at work, Noah was there and they were off to the movies, asked if I wanted to join them for supper/movies but passed...then off to Home Depot to have them match the sidding paint for the projects I have in store tomorrow..of course, had to pick up a few ground covers for the rocks and homeward bound..let the dogs in and then went over to Bernice's to drop of bakegoods, of course they were so pleased I had to sit and have tea and goodies...there back window (almost the entire length of the dining room faces the back yard..a yard one would die for..the birds must think its part of heaven because they are there in great/great numbers, so sitting we were able to watch them eat, watch mother robin teach her little ones where to go, see all the beautiful colors...then I had to come home..but Cliff and Bernice came over with me..Cliff unloaded my car, put the seater in my living room (yuk a lot of screws and things) will try to put it together tonight and that might be were the not so good day comes in..lol..

Before they left he went home and brought over 4 nice frames he made and wondered if I wanted them..so nice of them...I'm sure I'll find something to paint in them..lol..almost positive I will...and then because it's heavy to put the stained glass hanging piece from the back deck on my own, he helped me hang it... then Bernice and I went to her house, she had already made up a box of plants for me this morning so back we came and I planted them, moved a few things around that she thought were in the wrong location and would grow better if moved, then I had purchased the drop pellets for food for the plants, went and spred some around and then watered everything..didn't get to any grass but that's ok..neighbors need to get up bright and early in the morning..lawmower is a sure way of doing it...don't panic, although I'm always up around 4:30 - 5:00 I NEVER start cutting before 9..people work, people sleep in, so I'm thoughful of their needs (don't like waiting that long, lol, but I do)

Well, just came downstairs to get some tools, will be back later if all goes well and will gab along with you, absolutely love the flowers...

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh Betty, please don't tell my you got any butter tarts! I really look forward to my neice coming each year complete with a box of tarts! One of these day I will attempt to make some--maybe. You sound really busy and exhaust me.

Ok Jaye just listen, I did that for a long time before walking in the door. I was going to be so productive in the house today but ended up sleeping most. I guess the weather system was playing havoc with my head. Know I don't feel good when I turn down invitation to go have pizza with GD's--5 and 3. It is always dinner theater with those 2!!

I can relate to Dragonfly 62's Scotty with the potassium--what a bummer! I have been rushed (yes got that low) several times to ER for refills! I hated it so faithfully take my "horse pill" each day. Still have to watch it closely.

Well I think I will go downstairs and check out the frig for something to eat.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Scotty's potassium is not low. It is way too high which means that his kidneys are shuting down because they don'T take it out of his body, but deliver it to the cells which is very serious. Most people that have that trouble it is too low. I just learned this myself.I guess we never know what to watch until it catches up to us huh? Good luck with yours Abbi. HUGS BEV

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

((Bev)), I'll take my horse pills anytime...will be praying for Scotty. Losing weight is the best thing for diabetes.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Yes they were butter tarts and chelsybuns with lots of raisins...wish you lived closer...lol...

Taking a little break, giving my floormats another coat of finish and thought a few minutes away from putting that chair together would do me good...lordy they don't make those manuals very easy to understand....I'm up to having the box inside and looking at the photo..lol..all else fails, put it back into the box until DS can put it together...

Victoria Harbour, ON

OK guys, while you are all enjoying your start to the long-weekend, I'm just cleaning up after putting that slider together...PLEASE/PLEASE if I get any bright ideas to do so again, talk me out of it...

Best of today..all around good day..

Worse of today..hearing that the young father of 3 who owns the Wasaga Beach Paintball was out riding his atv and hit a tree...doesn't look good...

What did I learn..that I should stop thinking I need things that need to be put together...lol

Night all!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh my Betty! I hope my "drooling" doesn't come down your computer. Just the thoughts of the tarts and bun make my mouth water. I wish I were closer also. Eat some for me please!!

I realized having your potassium to high was bad also--in short, neither one, high or low is good. I feel myself going into slow motion when mine starts dropping--a really odd feeling. My thoughts and prayers are with you both!!

I managed to go outside for a bit tonight to see how things were looking (yes in the rain) and noticed the gardenias in front of the house were loaded with bloom. Wouldn't you know it! In the 5 years we have owned this house we have had 1, count them 1, bloom. I keep saying if it doesn't bloom next year it's a goner. Last year I said the first thing to go this year would be the gardenias--yeap they came in full force!! Love them but the smell makes me sick--to sweet. Guess I will give them a good pruning and fertilier when the blooms go and see if they will fill in their shape now.

Everyone have a great weekend. Those who have a long weekend, enjoy but be safe!

(Zone 7a)

OH!!! I just looked online about naming a star after hubby! There's a hundred different companies that do that. I just need to pick one. Thanks so much for that idea!

My day was great except I was late for work. I worked at a different location than usual and left my cell phone charger there! I had to stop there and get it before going to work as I'm off for the weekend and won't be going in that direction. I work retail security and am called to help cover at other stores when they're short handed. It's fun and I get to work with some very cool people.

Came home and found a yummy treat in the fridge for me. Ice cream! Mmmmm......butter pecan....

Mini rose about to open.

Morning all...sun is shinning, won't warm up till mid-morning..grass is wet-can't cut....B&B sign damp - can't paint, doors at back deck damp - can't paint...gave 2 more coats of finish to floormats - can't put them out...so guess what, have my gladrags on, heading to town, am sure I'll run into a plant or two that need a home, have a few things to pick up so off I go..

We'll talk later..have yourselves a beautiful day..sunny or not..the day is what you make of it..right? Some one tells me that..

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Morning! Dishes washed, tuna salad made and had first cup of coffee. Also have sugar water cooking for the hummers and orioles. Plus DH made breakfast. Bacon eggs and toast. So tummy is full for now and I am gearing up for the great outdoors! Poor Ty needs let outside.

Betty have fun shopping!

What are butter tarts? Guess I will go and google them. LOL

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Ves522 they are about the best thing this southern gal has ever put into her mouth. Reminds me of the filling used for pecan pies but full of plump juicy raisins! Not a calorie in them. LOL!! I am sure Betty could give us more info about what actually goes in them but I can gain 5 pounds just thinking about them. Needless to say I love them.
What a delight to have breakfast cooked for you. I miss that since my husband has died. He always did the weekends--pancakes. Surprise-I just found out our son has started the tradition with his family.

Our rain apparently moved through early and it looks like I might get to work outside today. Whoopee. A few errands to run first--always includes a nursery visit--if I can talk daughter into it. Hummm, if I agree to Mexican food for lunch then I have a bargaining tool.

Jaye, did I see somewhere you like frogs? I will try to get a picture of my froggie fellow to show you.

Must get dressed to go into Tally to do shopping.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

I did google them and they look good. But I am not a pecan pie person. but I'd be willing to try them. Have fun shopping!

I've been planting stuff. Was going to water the vegie seeds in but it got a bit too windy. Hopefully tomorrow.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh there are no pecans in them --just raisins. Well I guess you could get them with pecans but the filling is my, every so rich!! Oops 5 more pounds just typing that!

Our 8 ball zuchinni seeds have sprouted (actually my daughters-therapy gardening for her) and we will need to transplant into pots soon. Just hope they produce as we love the 8 balls!! Sauteed with a little garlic and olive oil--my,my goodness.

Cardiff, ON(Zone 4a)

I've been trying to get enough time on the computer to post. Finally, I have a chance. First off, thank you Betty for the gift far the kids. They loved getting gifts in the mail and really got a kick out of the tree 'face'. We have the perfect tree for it too. I'll take a picture once we get it up.

kwanjin, Sonora got a stuffed animal this year where she could name a star. Here's the website. http://www.shiningstars.com/ I wonder if your DH would like a stuffed animal - lol. We never received a map of where the star she named is though. Anyway, I hope your DH loves his star.

Wow, I had heard a couple years ago that butter tarts were a Canadian thing but I hadn't really thought a lot about it till now. The filling is similar to that of a pecan pie. You can have them plain or with pecans, walnuts or raisins added (I like nuts). Here's a recipe. Some recipes use just brown sugar, some use just corn syrup and this one uses a mix. I like the mix the best. I also usually make mini-tarts. First, then I can have more of them, and secondly, I have a tool from Pampered Chef so I can make mini-tart shells without having to roll out the pastry. Homemade tarts are soooooo much better than the store-bought ones. Maybe I'll have to make some today - mmmm.

pie pastry - for about 16 regular muffin cups
1/4 cup soft butter
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Prepare the tart shells, and set aside.
In a large bowl mix together the soft butter, brown sugar, salt and corn syrup; stir well until sugar is dissolved and butter is creamed. Add egg and vanilla and mix well.
Put filling in the tart shells about 2/3 full.
Bake at 400 F for 10-15 minutes for mini-tarts and 15-20 minutes for full-sized tarts. Filling should be lightly browned and bubbly.
Cool for 10 minutes and remove from tins.
You can add 1/2 cup raisins, peacans or walnuts. If adding raisins, soak them for 1/2 hour first. If you want to make sure that everyone gets the same amount of 'goodies' then put them in the tart shells before adding filling. Otherwise they can be stirred in when the egg is added.

Well, I guess I should get going with my day. The weather is beautiful so I'm hoping to spend a lot of much-needed time outside.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

So glad it is getting close to lunch. As I don't think I could wait a couple of hours after reading about these goodies! Ymmm!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Mine of very much like yours Gillian and I put mega 'raisins' in my..my downfall...lol...

Wow, just got back and it's noon, guess with rain last weekend (our long weekend) everyone who had garage sales planned, did them today and some tomorrow..I'd never had gotten home has I not had a 'full' car...got some goodies to do some works of art..

got 2 chandeliers and 5 cups/saucers for each to make chandelier candle holder...then a beautiful glass container, has a hole in the middle, thought I might make something creative with it, then a mini-set of dishes, know exactly what I'll do with i t, a couple of lamps once the wiring is revamped I can make antique stained glass lamps out of them, a few lanters, decorative only...an antique chair which I will convert into a live flower display, oh yes, a few items to make my 'trash to treasure' swap pal their gift but can't tell you what or she just might know, and of course...some shrubs and plants for me.....

Also stopped in at the man up the street's house, he said he's mega rhubbarb leaves and for me to come and get them should I want to make more walkways..that's exciting..

Now I'm out of my dress clothes, into garden clothes, have a zillion things to do, if I reach the ground, not sure why I'm on such a 'high' these past few days (NOPE, I don't take medication of any kind-so not on drugs..lol) just that it's beautiful just to be alive, to know kind and generous people..life is good!

Here's photo of some of my goodies...see from the photo in the back that tonight will be a bonfire night..must get rid of all that cardboard and tree shrub limbs...

This is a link for Jeannine or Laura or anyone who enjoys quilts and fabrics...maybe Judy, too.
The store is located about 20 miles from me and has the greatest batik fabric.

Outta here now, going on an evening boat ride....have a nice day and a great weekend, all of you.

Hi everyone. Just got back from the post office and I got a box. Problem is, I'm not sure if it's from my Secret Pal in this one or another one I'm in! LOL. It was full of some neat stuff. I'll take a picture and post it in both threads, just in case!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Such neat finds at the garage sales, Betty. I need to get the things I have put under the house out and work on them!

Gillibean, thanks for posting the butter tart recipe. The weight I gain will be because of you--LOL. I have absolutely no will power where they are concerned.

Managed to get to a nursery while I was out, now it is to the yard to start digging some holes. I got an Annabelle (I call it Abbigail after my granddaughter), Penney Mac, Variagted and Climbing hydrangea today. Had a gift certificate my daughter had given me several years ago that I had forgotten. Gone now.

Off to the great outdoors to start putting some plants in that will bloom.

Pacifica, CA

evening all,

now that im finished with all the other swaps maby now i can concentrate on my unfinished projects lol

loved all the flowers and thanks gilli for posting the recipe sure sounds good! yards are looking great to hope your all enjoying the long weekend.

betty, what great finds!

judy says hello to all she and family are at the other house for the weekend
she has been keeping herself busy clearing a area to plant her flowers..

well been a long day so going to call it a night have a great evening all

Victoria Harbour, ON

Long day here as well, been in jammies for a few hours..Noah is here to keep me company...he sees that I can hardly move and not well..so funny, must be listening to his parents as he said "you know grandma, if you wouldn't keep doing everything you do, you wouldn't be tired and sick" so I said, "Noah, who do you think will cut all grandma's grass?" and he goes on "not talking just about the grass, all those flowers and all the crafts you do, you should just be laying on the couch and relaxing.."
OK will do..lol

So I accomplished everything that was on my weekend 'to do' list and have plans to putter (that doesn't mean work) in the gardens tomorrow, sit and enjoy the better part of the day...

Do hope you are all enjoying your long weekend...

Best..just having a good time doing things I love to do..
Worse..realizing I don't have the energy I did but a few short months ago...
What did I learn..Noah thinks he has everything all planned for me this evening, little does he know I must take a couple of pain killers..too lazy to even get off the couch to get the restaurant food he picked up for me...now that's lazy right???lol

So I'm off, good Lord willing, tomorrow is another day!

Morning all,
I am up early..once I wake up in the mornings I can't seem to go back to bed..the birds are up and singing away.

Sharon..what a lovely photo..so serene.

Betty..great lot of goodies you found. I used to go to yard sales all the time on Saturdays.. "Loved the hunt for treasure".
...this year I told myself..no more....so far I I have managed to drive by them and not stop...but it is hard.

Had a nice time at the get to gether yesterday..some friends from where I used to work. Pot lucks are such fun..you get to try different salads etc..and one of the girls made cherry tarts and butter tarts....so of course I had to try both. I ate so much I was hurting afterwards...
Gilli..thanks for the recipe..maybe one day I will try it. Good tip about using both corn syrup and brown sugar.

Today I have more grass to cut and I will plant a few things..it will be a warm sunny day..
Later on this evening I go to see my grandaughter's dance recital.

Abbis..haven't heard anything back from my nephew about whether there is still the stuffed alligator around. Will have to ask him again.

Bev..gorgeous Iris..love the colour..I have some about to bloom..

Jaye..nice daylily..

Hi Cat and Ves..

Kwanjin, hope you find the perfect gift for your Hubby...

Hi Liz....our "mini Betty"..so many projects you take on..have fun..

Enjoy your day everyone

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol, it is indeed a beautiful morning, was already out in the garden filling birdfeeders..haven't seen a hummingbird but their liquid food is 1/2 way so maybe they are around..front porch looks inviting..maybe I'll sit this afternoon, get myself a book and become a 'lady of leisure' .. well see! As for garage sales Carole, what a way to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning..gets your 'mojo' going lol .. Now that all the grunt work is done for this weekend, today I'll play at finishing my 'trash to treasure' piece and maybe one for the front deck..enjoy the recital.. yum/yum cherry tarts...next Sat. morning is the Church plant sale, (can't wait) and they always have a 'bake sale' included so I'll get some treat then for the freezer..

Shar, what a beautiful sunset...like you, Roger and I spent a lot of time on the water, after he passed and we sold the 'Foxy Lady' - it hurt so very much seeing it and even taking her out..once I sold it I felt I had sold a good part of both of our memories, so when we bought her back and refurbished her all, what great 'joy' now to see her back in the water and travel Georgian Bay..another few weeks once the water warms up I'll spend more time on the water...

So outside I go, coffee and muffin in hand to enjoy the day...

(Cathy), MO

Hello everyone. We are 90 degrees & muggy here right now and I'm trying to get the rest of what I wanted to get done outside, done. It's supposed to storm all day tomorrow. I came inside to get something to drink and cool off a little.
I'm glad you have a good time last night Sharon. I've always loved the water. It reaches down and soothes something in my soul. If everything in my world is crazy and hectic, I can go to the water and it centers me again.

Hope you all have a super day. I'll check back in later when it gets too hot to be doing anything else out there! :-)

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

My goodness Cat you are not too far away and it is only 65 here. We had a brief little storm this morn but are going to get more tomorrow. I am just trying to balance my check book YUK YUK!! never could do that. It says I have a lot more money than I thought but I do not believe it!!!! Gotta git my girlfriend to get me straightened out. We might go shopping if I do have that. Just kidding. I have to get my hostas divided and my babies potted up because our little town is going to have a yard sale the 28th & 29th of June so want to get rid of some. Hey you all!!! I still have not gotten all my seeds out. May just have to put them all in same place and see what happens TEE HEE. Hope you all have a good weekend. BEV

I hope you don't get the bad storms up there Bev. Tornadoes everywhere anymore! It makes a person almost want to live in a cave! But then an earthquake would probably get us! LOL. Just no winning against Mother nature!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just call me swamp lady....decided after looking at the pond to empty again, couldn't figure out why there is green growth, someone suggested I put water plants in it so, emptied and it's filling as we speak and have about 10 plants to put in..see if that works..lol

Emptied all but a few feet..Missy realized there were little fishes swimming and kept trying to catch herself supper...

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

Have scalloped potatoes and ham cooking..I'm keeping moving or I might just fall asleep..been known to burn a meal or two..lol..actually been known to be successful a few time only with my cooking..just not my thing..but, have decided that I ate very little over the weekend and no expanding, so thought I'd make something light and bring a lunch rather than go out to eat..see if that helps..

Not finished, on the lookout for flowers than match the flower box I made, add a few more pretties and it's nice enough to sit out..here's one corner of the front entrance..

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Victoria Harbour, ON

Got about 6 more lilac trees on my list to purchase however, I can't find these deep purple..should cut some and bring them inside to enjoy, but just toooo pretty..

Thumbnail by Bettypauze

Behind these beauties is a secret dining room...should take a photo of the front..the gates cannot open because of flowers growing, but there are 2 side entrances so don't want to mess with Mother Nature...lol
