Today's Weather in Your Garden - 20

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

He's a cutie!

This is the she I guess. One just flew into the window :-( but flew off. I think there is like 5 or 6 of them??? Males in just about all cases have more color than females. I learned that having fish, really.

Awe.send some my way!!

How can I catch one? You should have more than one feeder as they fight. Feeders should be placed 10-12 feet apart. It cost money especially in the summer as you have to change their drink from tequila sunrise to 1 cup sugar and 4 cups water.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Cute, Sherrie.
I have just the one feeder, although I am wanting to get more. Yesterday one was sitting on the feeder while another buzzed around. What a lot of loud squawking there was!! Oh yeah - no doubt. These are very territorial birds!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Back in. Crazy weather day!! From minute to minute it goes from clear blue skies and breezy to dark, menacing clouds, strong wind gusts and light rain. Weird. I have only one feeder and have never seen more than two at once. There are too many flowers in my garden that they prefer.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Same here with the weather...sun glasses on but it's raining! Next thing I know, clear, then the winds pick up, it gets cloudy and now HAIL!!!! Good grief!!!!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

The wind is still blowing but currently no rain.

I like to have a couple of plants nearby to lure the hummers and provide the small insects the take in with the nectar. The males are very territorial! We've placed feeders a good distance apart because the most dominant male will perch on top of the feeder guarding it from all the others. My husband has made a fantastic video of the hummers and their antics.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Post it on YouTube! Then we can all see it.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Here it is:

Note: He says to turn up the volume so you can hear the humming and chirping!

Nice hummer video, they are really fun to watch.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

holy cow... did you guys see this one?

Too cold today! Had to dig up all the veggies I planted. I'll answer my own question: Yes, I goofed in planting them too early.

Patience is a virtue, and I'm virtueless again.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Amazing, Lynn!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow Lynn, neat video. I've seen one other but don't think so many were at the same feeder.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very cool, Lynn. I like when he perched on top. Allison, that one was amazing. I would love to have that many. I thought coloring the water was unnecessary?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Sorry, I think I mixed up who's who.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, were there owls too?^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Chilly forecast the next few days and nights. Low 40's at night. May 20th tomorrow??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

More like March 20th!

Today's weather was awful, terrible, disgusting, horrible and lousy!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Brrrr! Good sleeping weather, though.

I will pass the accolades to Fred since he's the videographer. Wish we had as many hummers as in the other video, but glad for what we've got!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This is certainly the latest I have had heat going since I've been in the house. What's the secret of that other feeder??

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

A second feeder placed out of sight will allow other hummingbirds to feed without being chased off by the one guarding the other feeder. I don't know why the second video shows all the birds feeding harmoniously because that is not the case here!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I just never see that many at one time - even at my flowers. It's always just one or two.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Pirl, I'm so sorry, I got confused, what did you really mean :~) It actually was kind of nice here today. The clouds kept threatening but did nothing, a couple of drops...tomorrow and Wednesday I'm off from work so count on rain in the NE and southern NE. It will keep my new JIs and SIBs hydrated so I will not complain.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Jezz, it wasn't that bad pirl... it just wasn't a day to be outside that's all! (hee hee!)

Temp 51.9°, Wind West 10.6 mph, Windchill 44.4°. ☺

Blueberry blossoms today.

When my brother-in-law was stationed in Cuba we went to visit them. They had a TON of hummers down there it was awesome.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

another cool day. 40* now and not going above 60. Have to spray Liquid Fence befoe the wind comes up and I won't be allowed in the house with smelly clothes on.
Gunna plant the latest arrivals.
If the sun comes up I'll send pics of the DL fans.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

WC - you're right that it wasn't a day to be outside! Now it's calm enough but still only 45. It's just wrong to still have "wind chill factor" this close to June.

I won't give in and I won't give up. Today I am going to get those dahlias planted even if I have to wear winter clothes to get it done.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll get my "down coat "and join you.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

47.4 right now - almost a heatwave!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

53.2° here with wind @ 0.1 mph from the West, feels damp outside, cloudy sky which looks like 'maybe rain'. ☺

Planted my dahlias last week, had to tease them out of the root mat to separate them! They got a nice head start this year & are doing fine.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Partly to mostly cloudy. Light breeze, glad the big time gusts and strong winds are gone. Temp is a bit chilly, started in the mid 40s just pushing 50 now. Rain showers maybe this afternoon.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

52 and clear. Wind has dropped considerable from yesterdays blow. We are suppose to get rain later. Out to do some planting and hope that I get my 3 yards of dirt delivered soon. I neeeeeeeeed it so I can finish planting some shrubs and get the last of the mulching done. I still have a few yards to haul about. Back still not happy from yesterday's work.

mamasita. thanks for the video. I went and finally put ours out and filled. We have never had hummingbirds, but I am planting even more things for them this year and have bought too nice red glass feeders. I have put them on the west side of the house near the new endless stream. Always hopeful.

Victor, DH saw an owl early yesterday morning in a big Euonymus alata. He was so surprised as we have never seen one on the property before. It was a Northern Saw-whet Owl. A cute little guy, no tufts. I hope it is living in our woods as we have lots of mice it could eat. No picture as he was just wandering through with his first cup of coffee with out the camera. I mean DH, not the bird. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool. I'd love to see an owl. 54 and sunny here. On my way out.

Thomaston, CT

It was 38 when I awoke at 7--not sure how low it went during the night, but everything looks OK--I toted all the annuals & tomatoes into the garage, & just toted them back outside--can we really plant them now?? Maybe when I get back from NH on Sun. I never have many hummers, but they seem to love fuchsia in a hanging basket on the porch--this year, my sister didn't like the hanging petunias she bought (don't know why she bought them in the 1st place!) & she gave them to me--that's where the hummmer was a few days ago. Good news about the owl, Patti---I hear a barred sometimes in the area--they say "Whooo coooks for you all" & will answer sometimes. Loved the hummers, Lynn!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

53 and drizzling now.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Great hummingbird videos.
And, no, you do not have to color the water to attract hummingbirds. If I remember correctly, red food coloring is very dangerous for the little guys to ingest.

I do like Sherrie and mix a 4:1 water to granulated sugar mix and let them at it!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

51, very light spotty rain but, thankfully, no wind so I did get just the dahlias at the front (outside) of the vegetable garden planted. Whew!

Tomatoes want a soil temperature of 55 degrees to begin to grow. They can easily rot in cold wet soil.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

50 and raining steady now. I'm glad I'm behind schedule and have not done the veggies nor the caladium yet.
