More May Booms!!
Ok I got up and I wen to water my plants and I found a flower I think that you guys told be that this was a listick plant I was oved joyed now it gets to be in the 40 at nite do you think I can put this out with my Hoyas or is it still to cold should I wait till it gets in the 50 at night What do you think it gets to be 60 in the house at night
Dimmer
Pretty Kim!! That looks just like one I have..I usually don't hang any of my plants outside until night temps around here stay in the 50's..others might tho??..I will be interested in hearing what others do...it would be nice and free up alot of space if was safe to put them out earlier...
Well right now it over 50 and I think maybe around 9ish I put them out for the day at least just so they get some fresh air after being in a smoked fill house all winter. Need also to air the house I better put on my long underware so I am not cold ^-^
Dimmer
LOL..kim..I hope we can put the long underwear away soon..Yesterday morning it dipped to 36 degrees here..way too cold for us this time of year.....
My goodness, all I did was go to bed last night and missed a lot this morning. I have never seen a pitcher plant and yours is great, Dimmer. Also, your lipstick plant will take off blooming now!
I waked up this morning with Bonnie's cross of sinningia Mark Twain x Ozark Fireworks with two blooms. Hope you get to see her Bonnie. I think she is prettier than some of my 'named and registered ones" as she is very purple with a yellow throat.
Oh Gail that is really pretty One day when I grow up I may have some just like You
Great picture Gail
Dimmer
You are so funny! Shortly I am going to start taking cuttings from all of mine and they root so quickly. I can't wait. Just wish I knew how to hybridize anything! One of these days when I grow up I want to be like Bonnie, Jan and Kim so I can learn how to even take seeds.
Something big is missing in my 'education'
Gail *lol* you are SO funny :)
You will have more seeds than you will know what to do with come fall *lol*
I've been trying to help my streps "do their thing" as soon as I think they look ready. I have one that I think is pregnant and I'm pretty excited about the cross. I will post pictures of the "parents to be" once the pod starts to "do the twist".
You are SUCH a fantastic grower and your plants basically hybridize themselves *lol*
XO
Kim
Someone posted a site where they teach you how to gather seeds and hybridize???????? Anyway, I don't have to worry about it right now.........
Isn't Bonnie's seedling a beauty!
Have to go all the way to Corpus to take a lady in our club some pots and stuff............
Well don't lock your keys in the house maybe I will get you one of those motorcycle chains that you can put on your purse and it snap's back once you are done with it LOL
Dimmer you are a riot, I can just see Gail with one of those biker key chains hanging from a pocket or her purse!! LOL Your lipstick plant has a very pretty bloom, love the reds!
Kim can't wait to see the "parents" you helped "do their thing" you'll have to go into business as a "therapist" that helps plants along with these issues! ^_^
Gail that seedling bloom is beautiful, I'm always a sucker for a yellow throat!
Just a note Gary Mikita is going on vacation, his last shipping day is Monday the 19th of May. Otherwise it will be June 9th before he ships again
...........the cost of the strep plants for a small co-op order will top out at $5.70 each. I've had a couple of d-mails already and if anyone else wants in let me know by tomorrow morning.....
~Brenda
Brenda, I can hardly wait to get back home and start propagating every sinningia I have!
I will just do my own thing with Gary, Brenda..........thanks for your hard work. I had no idea I could tell him the ones I have and he would send others.........
I am sure he is getting ready for nationals the end of May.............
That is probably what he considers a vacation, going to nationals!! It would be amazing to walk around and see everything at on of those huge gessie gatherings.
It is definitely a big perk to get to send your list to him even with a "growers choice" deal!!
Playful Spectrum is getting more blooms constantly..
~Brenda
Wow, where to start :)
I literally was giggling SO HARD imagining Gail with one of those biker chains and her wallet and keys hanging from her danskins *lol* OMG Gail, can't you just see it? Maybe even one of those leather doo rags to hold your hair up?
I will post pictures of the parents to be (if we don't have to go do groceries tonight *yuck*) when I get home. I literally have 5 scraps of paper with strep names on them holding pollen on top of my dresser just waiting for the "right time" *lol*
Gail, I LOVE that Codonanthe Paula! VERY cute! And that sinningia cross by Jannich.........stunning!
Brenda, Playful Spectrum is SUCH a beautiful one! I just LOVE the flowers on it! Yours is so floriferous and vibrant too :) I sure hope you knock a leaf off someday *lol*......playin' w/cha *winkers*
Kind of a gray day here. Sure wish it would rain a little bit. I'm already having to water with the hose *lol*
Been reading up on Chirita and crossing Nematanthus/Codonanthe to make x-Codonatanthus.......my mind is swimming!!
XO
Kim
Kimber- It's grocery night for me too..ugh.
Gail- We can either fix you up with the biker chain OR one of those retractable things that hooks onto your belt loop. So what's it goona be- Biker or Geek? LOL BTW Our Wal-Marts sell Danskin brand here! Thought that was kinda funny that you went to yours to return that brand and they didn't carry it. LOL
Should of come up here to return it! ha!
I would rather be a biker than a Geek!!!!!!!! Especially since everyone knows I am not the sharpest knife in the kitchen (LOL)
Brenda, I agree with you that going to nationals would be the nicest vacation I could ever take! I may never get it this close to home (Tulsa) again.
Kim, you were mentioning leaves to Playful Spectrum. Brenda sent me leaves and here is a baby.........I probably have more........didn't look very good. I can rarely make african violets bloom like other people.
I need to be verrrry dramatic and tell you that I got a notice from Lyndon Lyons (who I like very much) on May 4th that he had sent out a back order from last summer. I didn't even know I had a back order. To make a longer story short........they finally came today 10 days later as they put the wrong zip code on it. Although I love Lyndon Lyons, I had a catastrophe with my order last summer (due to the UPS man) and not LL.
Well, the plants arrived today and I am not paying for them since I had absolutely nothing to do with the error made. Weak, stressed plants at 8.00 to17.50 (8 of them) plus 19.00 shipping is not acceptable to me. It just invites all kinds of problems with bugs, etc.
Here is the address label
Oh those poor plants! I hope they credit your account Gail.
I put my Codonanthe devosiana paula in front of a opened window and it flowered and now it's got what I think are berries with seeds inside. pretty cool. The breeze coming in the window must have pollenated it? I don't really know.LOL.
I looked it up and found this picture of another codonathe..
http://www.gesneriads.ca/codona05.htm
I am so happy you posted this picture, Jan. I can't wait until mine will have the pretty white flowers and maybe some berries to boot!!!!!!!!!!
Oh Gail, that is SO awful about Lyndon Lyons! I bet they will credit you no questions asked (at least they SHOULD).
What a beautiful Playful Spectrum baby you have there!
Jannich, I'm quite sure that those berries will be seedpods :) I think you need to let them dry completely and then gently smash them on a piece of paper (I think they turn a deep red/brown when ripe) and spread out the seed inside. Let the piece of paper dry for a few days and then the seed can easily be "wiped" onto a clean piece of paper :)
Congratulations!!!
Kim
They have to .........I didn't even know they were sending plants (a backorder from a year ago). They shouldn't keep people's credit card numbers around that long. Johnny's Selected Seeds had to send emails out to every customer last year (and mine was one of them) that someone had hijacked all their computer information on every customer. I had to cancel the card immediately.
I am excited to know what to do if I get lucky enough to have berries on my codonanthe!
Jan, you are one of the funniest people I have ever known!!!!!!!
She dmailed me to say...........na.na .na na I can root strep leaves!
Looks like I missed wayyy to much again today..Gail with a biker keychain..lol..Gail thats so sad about that LL order..I had no idea they kept back orders that long..just not right of them to do..Hope you get a refund..Codonanthe Paula is wonderful gail..Bonnie's cross of sinningia Mark Twain x Ozark Fireworks is a knock out too : )
Jannich I never knew Codonanthe Paula even bloomed let alone grew berries! Boy do I still have alot to learn..a whole lot!! That is a really neat looking plant.
Brenda..I love Playful Spectrum..what a beautiful bloom...thanks for all of your work on a coop for garys but I think I will wait on anymore streps for now..I can't believe I just said that..LOL..I have alot of strep leaves started again so that will keep me busy for awhile..should have alot of babies to share this fall with everyone..keeping fingers crossed..lol..I do have 5 babies already on a leaf of silvia I put down 3 weeks ago..spring is the absolute best time for me to start leaves : )
Kim..you are so amazing with those crosses for hybridizing...I would love to have just a little piece of the gift of hybridizing that alot of you gals have..so neat!!
Good Morning Everyone,
Nance, you are going to have just a little piece of hybridizing this fall........when I gather all these seeds, who is going to help me grow them out? *lol*
Well, since the pod is starting to do the "twist", I think it's safe to say we had a love connection *lol* And here are the proud parents of my first successful spring cross:
Momma - Salmon Sunset
My next planned cross is going to be Maasen's White X Sylvia and then Sylvia X Maasen's White
Hoping to get something that looks like Playful Spectrum *lol*
They are not quite ready but I have been gathering the pollen in preparation :)
Hope you all have a wonderful day :)
TGIF!!!!
XO
Kim
Good Morning!
Thanks for the info Kim,looks like i will have seeds soon if anyone wants to try them.Love the crosses your going to do.Please let me try your seeds again.I promise to do better with them:) that fire and ice is stunning!
Nancy this codonanthe has the sweetest little flower on it.Do you have it?
LOL.Gail,na,nana,nannnnaaaa.I got one strep to root...Whoo whoo.I really sink at growing strep leaves. That was a big deal for me.LOL.
Jan I would be honored to try your seeds should you have any available and OF COURSE you will be getting seeds from my crosses.
In 1 pod, I can share about 12-15 packages. :) I just LOVE making boxes/seed packages to share :) I'm really hoping for some neat crosses to "play with" this winter :)
I am just now starting to see success from seed. It has taken alot of experiementing etc. but I'm actually beginning to like it now *lol*
I love playing with seeds during the winter :)
Congratulations on your strep leaf! That is AWESOME!!!
I am really loving the pictures of sinningia Gail, those are awesome!
XO
Kim
Nancy I can't believe you can see babies in three weeks from your strep leaves!! I am so envious!! Although I have never put leaves down in the spring so we shall see what happens with all the ones I put down last Friday from Gail, send me some of your growing vibes!!!!
Gail you had me LOL again with your "I would rather be a biker than a Geek!!!!!!!!" Too funny......I hope your issue with LL gets settled quickly! It's a no brainer that they messed it up bad!
Kim, you patience in packaging up all those tiny seeds in the little tissue paper if far beyond mine!! I can't wait to see all of your crosses start to bloom, there are going to be some amazing blooms!! I hope to get my seeds from you down this weekend now that I have cleared my seed growing area.
Jan because of what I mentioned to Kim (no patience with packaging seeds, at least not now!) your going to be getting whole pods in our trade! It's the only way I'll get it mailed out on Monday! If I have to divide and package the seeds it could be months!! LOL I hope you don't mind??
So is this just wishful thinking or does anyone (Bonnie ..... Jan???) think that what is showing in this picture could be the start of some blooms on my S Darth Vadar?? I'm hoping so ^_^
~Brenda
Paul Sorano talked me into letting the crowns of these plants sit for a while under the lights (a week) and get back to him. He even said at one point in the conversation that they really only guarantee a crown. He said that is why they send such large plants out..........so that people could at least save the crown.
I don't know why I agreed.............he is a very persuasive person. Last summer I accepted the plants that had baked in the sun and eventually threw away most of them (all 229.00) and now I have 123.00 of plants I didn't even order or want. He is saying it is a backorder from last summer?????????????????????????????????
I do think that , as much as I love their catalogue, I am not playing this game anymore as I have come out on the losing end both times. For this amount of money I could have had 15 healthy streps!
Yes, Brenda, those really look like buds forming with the little two leaves (or whatever they are called that accompany the bloom). You have two sets forming.
And....yes, I would always rather be a biker than a geek..........
Oh my gosh, Brenda. Xanadu is magnificent! I am learning along with you.
I am really missing Lin around here! Did I miss a post about her going on vacation?? I hope she's not ill!
Lin had mentioned that plant files could really use some picture of Kohlerias awhile back so I've been getting some shots of mine, sans their ugly foliage. LOL Now to figure out how to upload them to plant files??
Here is Kohleria Emily Roberts, she has been my easiest grower and most prolific bloomer...
~Brenda
Sounds like a load of bull puckey to me Gail ...... only guarantee crowns?? Very few people would even know what to do with a crown, they want plants and that's what they pay for!! I for one will be shying away from LL, they don't sound customer friendly at all!! I think you should write up both of your experiences with them on Garden Watchdog!
Yippee, blooms forming on Darth Vadar! There is also one forming on my S. Cardinals Red ...... loving these sinns!
Here's the photo I'm thinking of putting on plant files of that Pearcea sp Ecuador that will show both the blooms and the lovely dark foliage along with new lighter foliage coming on.....
~Brenda
Oh how pretty Brenda! Simply stunning!
Gail, I think I would still be VERY upset (especially if I didn't want the plants) and I think that you definitely have a legitimate reason for not wanting to rescue the plants. First of all, at prices like that, you should get nice healthy robust plants, not have to wean them back to health. No nursery should have backorders from a year ago. Did you send him a picture of the label along with a picture of the plant?
I would call him back and tell him that you would like to send all the plants back to him and that they should pay the shipping back. Tell him you will fit them all in a large flat rate to make shipping back to them as economical as possible. Is it your fault they put the wrong zip code and you box went all over kingdom come?
If you want the plants and want to save them, that's one thing but if you don't, well I certainly don't think you should have to try to save them!
XO
Kim

I just can't be that forceful but the consequences are that I will never order from them again.
Of course I don't want the plants! Why should I ? One plug was completely out of the soil and had broken leaves!
Oh well, what goes around always comes around so I don't have to worry about administering justice in the world. It takes care of itself.
Look at how big this sinningia is going to be and I will probably miss the first bloom!
This is the Jack Evans purple mix seed. I am going to order the Lawn seed but Jan says they are humongous in size.
Brenda,
I just saw your pics for the first time! Simply cannot believe you can grow Kohlerias like you do.
