hmmm..That looks like it might be it Gail ....do you think Dianes violet could maybe be Irish Sweeps? It looks an aweful lot like mine when it was blooming..Ohhhh there are alot more green blooming av's than I ever imagined..LOL

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Miss Lin,That little plant you have growing looks like parsley to me.LOL.

Come on ladies, roll those plants. It's easy. They will reward you for doing it!

Oh Susan, that poor roulette cherry, why did you send me a piece of the leaf? I would have waited till your plant got bigger. Is it going to be OK? Please keep us updated on it.

Gail, the sinningia Jack Evans purple ,is going to be a nice color. It will still be blooming when you come home next week.

Whoo whoo Brenda, looks like a bud on Darth Vadar!!!!

Diane,Beautiful AV's.

Look what I found on the floor behind a plantstand. The poor thing is yelling at me to let it out.LOL.

Gail,
No this is not the one I cut from... That one is also getting baby bloom but not up yet. This one is the very first one that came... I ordered it when I was at Kim's house and almost had a cow when they exchanged the money...LOL It came with 3 little leaves and two were dead. The last one did not look to good either...Kim told me to tell her as for what I paid for it should have come alive not almost dead... She was very nice and shipped me a much bigger plant... That is why I could cut the leaves.... I have another Strep with one wilted leaf and it is going to bloom...It is a very light color... I know I should clip the bloom as to help the plant but I can't bring myself to do it..LOL
About growing... I just got a plant and dropped it and turned it into 3 plants they may live they may die... I try now not to sweat it when things go wrong as they always will for me.... LOL I have a few Kohleria's and I am not sure if I would order Sinn's as they look like more then I can do... I really like the streps and they seem to like me... I put Kim(Dimmer) a leaf down of the RC and it has babies already... Like I said they seem to like me... So far Episcia's seem to like me also.. Time will tell... I am done buying now unless something breath taken comes along... I have mostly streps... I have a few Chirita's that were very tiny and now look good but only the one Kim sent me is blooming.. Maybe I don't know the trick for them...LOL
Ok talked your ears off enough...
Hugs,
Susan

LOL..I forgot the pic..Diane here is what my Irish sweeps looks like in bloom ..it has variegated leaves too....

Thumbnail by cedarnest
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Irish Sweeps has wavy variegated foliage. Let's ask Diane if her foliage is wavy. The green and white blooms all look pretty much alike to me.

Jan, I am very excited about Jack Evans purple that you grew from seed. I have a question about the speciosas. Can I take cuttings from them or do they go dormant like the big florist's gloxinia???????? I thought you were going to post of Phinea ecuadorana wanting out.

If I find out that I can take cuttings, I am going to cry that the best of all red one got taken by mistake at the sale. I just took it to show it off and one of the ladies sold it!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, well, I am ordering seed.

Jan, glad you confirmed DArth Vadar for Brenda.

Nancy, your post just came in and your plant is terrific looking!

God is so good. I have been pouting about all these big african violets in bloom now that weren't ready for the sale and I don't have room. (They are way too big to ship) My son just called to ask me if I had any african violets I could bring. He is in the landscaping business and wants to give them to his friends to give to their mothers..........problem solved!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

oh I forgot the pictue too.LoL/

I'm a bad plant mommy,I don't even remember putting this cutting down to root or how long its been behind the plantstand and it still puts out a flower.LOL

Oh Susan ...Your babies are so pretty! You really are getting into these Gessie's like a couple of other's I won't mention, ** wink ** wink ** - can't wait to see a picture of your new stand once you get it together and all your plants set up on there! That is a great size ... it will hold so much ... but, believe me you will run out of space again real quick and be wanting another stand just like it. LOL.

Well, I chased off that beautiful Swallow Tail Kite - and baby mocking bird is ok for the night hopefully! I'm glad hubby didn't have the video camera going while I was flailing my arms and running around yelling at that bird to get away! ^_^ It was kinda funny ... two UPS trucks stopped at the corner (exchanging packages!) and here I am out in the street looking up at the sky and hollering "Get out of here!" "Go Away!" Wonder if those guys heard me and thought I was either yelling at them or possibly looney? I told my husband I know tomorrow morning the predator birds will be back. I thought about taking clothes pins and a small towel to cover the top of the hibiscus so maybe the predators can't see a nest in there. I know it's nature and I should just let things be but it's so sad that one baby already got picked off by either the Kites or Red Tailed Hawks. We've seen both flying around lately. The time of year I guess. I have about ten bird feeders around the yard and birdhouses in lots of trees and on posts in the yard. We have a lot of birds year round but it's a busy time in spring with all the nesting and hatching and fledging going on! All the predators know when the pickin's good.

We got the two new queen palms planted in the backyard. Gail ... it's one of my favorite palms too. Wonder why they would be so expensive in Texas? They even have them at our Wal-Marts here. Very inexpensive palms and they grow real fast. We planted 3 after the hurricanes about 3 1/2 years ago ... those were just like the ones we got today, skinny and about 6' tall ... and now are really big! We laughed after those hurricanes and said we were never going to ever plant any other trees except palms. Palms sway and bend in the high winds whereas other trees either get uprooted or broken in half during hurricane force winds.

LOL, I am wondering what that plant is in the left corner of my gessie seeds too. I was thinking it looked a bit like parsley but I haven't planted any parsley seeds. I plan on leaving it to see what it becomes! Will keep you all posted! I know I need to get those plants separated and into pots of their own ... one of these days. ^_^

Well, I'm off to the shower! Have a great night everyone!

Wow Lin.. I wonder if mine will ever get that Big?? I hope so...What a Beauty!! Oh now you have me laughing thinking of the ups guys and you chasing those kikes away from your baby mockingbird..Wonder if they thought you didn't want a package today??LOL...susan..everything looks super! I just can't get over that one leaf roulette getting ready to bloom..I can't wait to see it open!
Well Thank you Jannich..now I am going to go roll up kohlerias..ooo I love the dainty bloom on your Phinea ecuadorana..wow it boggles my mind..all the gessies I still know nothing about!! Gail the more I look at mine it don't look like Dianes..keep looking girl : )

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

LOL Jan, I think you are learning from me ;)

Phinaea phinaea... they can be crossed with some of those rhizomatous thingies. Diastema for sure. Don't think I've heard of other intergenerics but maybe. I think you should save some pollen :P

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow that is some plant... Will the King of Kings get this big??
Hugs,
Susan

Nancy: The Swallow Tail Kite is a really beautiful bird: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Swallow-tailed_Kite.html#fig1 It's just so sad that they have to eat baby birds. I might be out in the morning trying to run off the kites as well as another beauty, the red tail hawk. I don't know if Mama and Papa Mockingbird appreciates me or not, even after I've been chopping up apples and berries and raisins for them!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Lin..you sound so much like me..lol..we don't have kikes here but we have plenty of hawks..our main problem with them this time of year is they have a tendency to go after our purple martins and that has me running and screaming just like you...we also feed alot of birds and we get pretty attached to them..I know its natures way but I still try and do everything I can to help tip the scales in our songbirds and martins favor! I think mama and papa mockingbird are very happy to have you helping them in both providing food and helping protect their babies : )

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Well I've been babysitting little James and have missed alot! Here is a pic of the foliage on the green blooming AV. Hope it's clear enough since it's dark now.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Lin- I bet the UPS men got a kick of of you! How did you sow the gessie seeds? Sprinkle them over the soil then cover with a thin layer of soil? Everyone is fixing you up with herb- parsley, oregano....here I was guessing Marigold!LOL

Susan- Those red flowers are beautiful! Poppies? I'd never seen double poppies before. WOW
Can't wait to see your stand- Seems like I feel more anxious for you to get it put together and show it off than you are! LOL SO glad it wasn't that little Roulette you took my leaf from. I was feeling guilty for a minute there. Post another pic when it opens please- can't wait to see it! So far so good it seems on the leaf cuttings I made from what you sent. A couple of them seem like the end is drying a little and those are all the very end pieces that are doing that. Guess because that would be the farthest part from the food source if still attached. Other than that they look GREAT! I am very optimistic!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

just hopping in for a minute before bedtime! I usually spread the seeds on top of my regular mix and then lightly cover with the very fine kind of vermiculite. Then I spray down real well and dome them.
Good luck

Susan, you are in the perfect place to grow poppies......the perfect climate. Last year I did plant poppies but the only ones that came up were the (not so pretty ones).

When I lived in Ruidoso, NM in zone 6 I could have the really pretty poppies.........Iceland and all kinds. These are just the California poppies.

After looking at the pics- I think my green AV is closer to your Green Dragon. My leaves aren't wavy. At least I don't think so. I couldn't find any green AVs on the Optimara site.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

What do you think about Frozen In Time? I found a pic of it- looked similar....

(Zone 1)

Frozen in Time was the first one I thought of but Frozen in Time doesn't have as much green and it has a tinge of violet in the flower ... I used to have Frozen in Time and it is pretty but not as gorgeous as your plant, Diane!

Here's the AVSA pic of Frozen in Time: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/FrozenInTimeLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/FrozenInTimeLrg.jpg%23 and it doesn't show any of the green tinge or lilac in the flower.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

You are up early Ms. Lin :)
Good Morning :)

(Zone 1)

ARRRGH! Lost my long post! My computer is very slow this morning too! Let me try this again!

Good Morning Miss Kim! Yep ... I am a morning person although not usually up at 5:15, as I was this morning! One of the cats wanted out and another wanted to be fed so I just decided to stay up. Made myself a cup of tea and sat on the deck amongst my plants listening to the birds singing. Then went and got the newspaper in and read it, and also watched Trading Spaces on HGTV.

Mama Mockingbird was hollering at me when I went to get the paper out of the driveway this a.m. I didn't check the nest then but later went over and looked ... no baby :( I don't know if it took flight or if a predator got it. Hopefully it's flying free.

Diane: I am still leaning towards Green Dragon for your AV. Check out this photo: http://www.steverd.com/violets/green-dragon.jpg
The foliage doesn't really show the variegation but it could be a young plant. I know when I first got a couple of AV's that were variegated I thought they had shipped the wrong ones because there wasn't any variegation in the foliage at all. After awhile the variegation really showed up.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to miss ya'll soooooooo much! I had to take pictures of my car before I even get to my favorite nursery. My son loves plants as much as I do so I am taking him some, also. Then, I remembered his girlfriend likes african violets!!!

Hi ALL,
I need some help here if somoene is around..I got a new shelf yesterday and put it together this morning.. Well this thing is more then likely going to hold almost everything I own in plants... I have a picture I want to show you and is it ok to put 3 sets of lights on one shelf? It can hold them easy and still have room left over on the end... I guess I will put the plants that don't like as much heat there or light... I don't know if I have any..LOLOL So any help in how to set this thing up would be great...
Thanks
Susan

I can not believe what I missed just since 1:30 yesterday afternoon!! LOL Love this group and all the chatting and pictures, so much fun!!

Gail you be sure and pop on to your kids computers every time you get a chance and keep us informed of your goings on!! We want to hear all and especially about the trips to those awesome nurseries!!

I loved that Winner Green AV and wanted to tell you that my Gold Star mini AV, the yellow blooming one is opening up it's latest set of blooms. They don't photograph with any color at all unfortunately! But I love looking at it each time it blooms and thinking of you buying it special for me!!

Have a great trip and spoil those grandkids mercilessly and your son too! LOL

~Brenda

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Holy Cow girl!! Now that is a plant stand, awesome!! My chrome shelving unit is only 17 inches deep and one shop light with two bulbs per shelf is perfect on it. I just took my tape measure up and "pretended" I had a stand 42 inches deep .....

I think you could get away with two lights and thus 4 bulbs per shelf and then shift things here and there (some directly under the lights some in the center or at the ends) and find out where everyone was the happiest. I have read that the dark blooms like higher light while lighter colored blooms like less.....

But I am no pro at the light stand thing so maybe some one else will pop in and give their opinion!!

It is going to look awesome all filled up and I can't wait to see the pictures.........

Edited to say that I hang my lights right at the midrib thing on the bottom of the shelves. You have two of those mid rib things on that whooper set of shelves and I think if you hung a light under both of those that the carry over light would light the whole shelf underneath easily.....

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I am no good at this but do you think that might be to much lite and heat from the bulbs I of course is no pro but that is my thought Maybe if you put 1 high 1 low and 1 in th middle, ya know Momma papa and baby bear HAHAH
Dimmer

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Yeah Dimmer, I do think three lights would be too much light and too much heat......

I'm thinking two lights, one from each mid rib per shelf would work very well and give bright warm places for the plants that need it and cooler less bright spots for the ones that don't.

She could also use something underneath any particular plant to boost it up closer to the lights if need be. That's what I do for the littler guys that need to be closer.

Susan you are going to have such a great set up when your done here. I've never seen that big of a unti at our Costco but I'm going to be keeping my eyes peeled for one now!!

WOW Love the shelves Susan! Bet it probably fills up quicker than you think it will though! LOL

Lin- The only thing about the Green Dragon is it looks like it has some of Gail's 'whoop de doo' (LOL) in the middle. The blooms on mine are more single I think. What do you think?

Gail- I guess I somehow missed that you were going on a trip! I thought you'd already been-
Have a safe one but have fun!!! And yes please check in as much as possible!
