What's happening in your neighborhood today...pt3

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG, it's sunny and 27 C here today! Who'd have believed it could do that after the snow we had a week ago? LOL.

Sneaked out of work early so I can start getting some of my many plants into the ground. Woo hoo!!!

Congrats ladies - it's about time Calgary caught a break! We're supposed to get about equal amounts of sun, cloud, and rain over the next four days and slightly cooler than normal. The farmers can sure use the spring rains though, so I'm not complaining.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

And I turned on my watering system today to discover I have a hole in the tubing right next to the garden gate and the company cant come out until the 29th! Hand watering if nexessary! Which it probably will be with this heat scheduled to last a few days!

Betty your gardens are so nice, especially after all of the uncharted weather lately. I have lost alot of the seedlings that I had, but have replanted lots already and they are outside and sprouting away. While grocery shopping the other day at superstore, I broke down and just bought a bunch of stuff, so hopefully this weekend will be okay to plant everything, otherwise I give up..lol

Its supposed to hit the 30C range here this weekend so we'll see I guess..Im still working but can spend a bit of time outside here and there. Im actually thinking about getting some banana or canna plants..any suggestions from anyone? I have some huge containers that need to be filled and have lotsa sun all day long. I want big and bold, but the reason I ask is because Im just wondering which ones will be better for this zone to overwinter, as I dont have alot of protected areas to do so

Hope everyone has a great weekend

Morning, up early but that's what happens when you are in bed before 7pm...lol...had an early appt. at the hospital so am hoping to be home with enough energy to cut all the grass, lordy take about 3 hrs....before the rain starts..I've floorcloths, flower pots, mdf boards to make faux windows for back shed so I've plenty to entertain myself with this coming long weekend if it does indeed rain for most of it...

Sydney, sorry you've lost a lot of your plants...so costly to replace..30 omg wouldn't I like to be visiting you..love warm weathe...

Back later for a chat..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well .. we seem to be having a 'coastal morning' here .. high humidity and fog .. along Lake Superior fog is not uncommon .. but 30 miles inland it's not. If there's anything about our weather for the weekend .. I predict a lot of 'unpredictability' LoL ... fer sure NOT the temps the west is going to be experiencing.

Sydney .. I plant close to 30+ CANNA Lilly bulbs yearly and they are wonderful .. they have to be dug out in the fall, cleaned and put somewhere before pre planting and then planting .. I'll look up some pics of last years ..

Betty .. sounds as though you'll be a busy lil gardener this weekend .. come rain or shine :-)

My plans are varied .. vet appt this morning .. both Smokey and Lilly for their yearly shots (THAT ought to be fun) .. have never taken them together .. have some Wally World shoppin to do .. dang coupons I have been diligently holding onto EXPIRE soon .. no doubt I'll find something that catches my eye in their gardening dept ..
No planting planned (except for DH and his veg garden) the fence folks have not arrived yet and where they'll be messing about where I would have put my Morning Glory and Nasturtium seeds :-( gonna plant them later though as I LOVE those 2 flowers ..
The countertop guy came last evening to do a COMPLETE and accurate measurement .. now I have to go out to a Tile place and pick out 100 6x6 tiles for the backsplash .. this entails me going back to get the sample of the countertop and taking one of my kitchen cupboard doors off .. then picking up my best bud and going to try and pick out what I want .. since my middle name is PROCRASTINATION .. followed closely by INDECISIVE .. this ought to be an adventure !!

I hope everyone has an enjoyable and pleasant weekend :-)

I should've known, when I didn't see the thread pop up, that you'd started a new one. But I've been more-or-less MIA the last few days. It's getting altogether too close to when we leave on vacation.

I have an Ottawa Symphony concert on Tuesday evening with three rehearsals on Sunday and Monday, I've been winding up working at the Food Cupboard (I'm officially retired again though I owe them a few hours), and I've been trying to get about 150 copies of the Canadian Viola Society Newsletter in the mail. (Violist - yours was mailed yesterday). It's really late this time since I didn't have any content for it at the deadline and I didn't have time to chase after any content.

All 106 of my Hostas have come back and are accounted for, but one is not looking healthy. I acquired 13 new ones this week and I have another 11 coming after I return from my vacation as well as a couple in a trade with Sandy (Sanannie). I need to get them into the ground somewhere before we leave, even if only temporary. Actually, some may be left in pots until I return if they are large enough.

Here are some early season stunners - 'Outhouse Delight' - emerges white and gradually turns green.

Remember Me - emerges with bright yellow centers which turn white

Some of the ones I need to plant. Not all are new - some were in planters last year and were temporarily placed into the new garden last autumn.

Goodness you guys have me hooked on 'hosta's' along with roses, along with well just gardening in general..was out all day yesterday cutting grass/weeding and today it's raining..so will be an inside day and there is much I can do..made sure I had cleaning supplies, dusting spray and a room full of crafting supplies..so it's off for breakfast, out of my jammies, and just enjoy my day!

"M" love the photo's
ViolaAnn, you sure have a busy schedule as well andyet we all find time to 'garden'....a staple of life!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ann, great photos of your lovely hostas! Mine haven't emerged yet, usually won't see them till late May, early June...I keep checking though, just in case. LOL.

15C here right now at 8:30 AM. It's supposed to be a beauty today, 29C, I think.

I picked up 3 hostas at the garden centre earlier this month- Pilgrim, Fragrant Blue and Moonlight. They will go in a shady corner out front that got badly trodden during construction next door ( right beside the property line!) and it appears most of the plant there got destroyed. Although of course there is still hope.

A lady visiting a couple of days ago said she figured she had lost all her hostas - I said why - because none were up yet! I showed her mine - some just barely out of the ground so trhat gave her renewed hope. It has been such a late spring I am almost afriad to plant in spots that look bare - lots of things just starting to break ground because we finally have a week of warm weather.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Hi everyone ..

LOVE Hosta :-) have some I potted from the local greenhouse .. it has been nearly a month now and these babies want to be GROUNDED !!! Have no idea what they are .. am thinking Emmerald Isle ? One is vareigated and others just sorta green :-) Have a semi shady spot for 'em .. but NOT yet ..

WINDY here today .. lawsie .. was walking across the CAN Tire parkin lot with a few items and about became airborne !!!
'Sorta' have the patio area in agreeable shape .. the winter 'flotsam and jetsom' is cleared away .. put together a 'patio deck box' today .. ummmmmmmm .. I held the instructions :-) Guess it looks OK .. says ya can sit on it .. am thinking my grandkids would be about the ONLY weight I'd put on it !!!

It has now become overcast .. and I do think we may be gonna get rained on .. a Board I sit on is having a fund raiser at the local Casino .. gambler that I am NOT .. I will hand out pamphlets re the new Childrens Centre that is being built .. should be a fun evening ..

Ciao

Was sunny and hot here today, 28*C. this evening there's clouds and a wind picking up. Supposed to rain for the holiday Monday. So much to do this weekend:
Swiftsure yacht race;
Scottish Highland games;
Luxton rodeo;
Our option is to take it easy putter in the garden and relax.

MarilynneS, how big do those canna's get?? Im looking for something big and tall, beautiful gardens btw. It was really nice here today but I had to work, oh well it will be plenty hot here soon enough.

Growin, hows that puppy of yours and hope hes doing okay

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Much nicer start to the day than predicted. I'm not surprised. I have six hours of orchestra rehearsal starting at 1 and the Sundays with a double rehearsal are never awful days.

Hope you have sun where you are as well.

Waiting impatiently I might add for the early morning to warm up...been up since 5..accomplished much and now I'm waiting to get things done outside...oh well, got out my trusty old paint and am working on a floor runner (linoleum backside painted) for my front deck..all else fails..do crafts..lol..

I was overjoyed this am as I had joined a swap for the 'red/white/blue' theme and I finished my piece..would post it here but alas there are lurkers and one just might find the USA theme here on our Canadian thread..lol...should I have peaked your curiosity let me know and I'll d-mail you a photo...now to wait for the name/address of my swap buddy and mail out date which is the end of the month...

Sounds as though the rain might have hit some of you, did here off and on yesterday, thank goodness I had done the entire yard, yesterday bobbed up and down the stairs between crafts and cleaning..the upper level is completely done...so between today and tomorrow I'm on a mission to get the lower level done..(maybe not my craft room though-too many projects on the go)..

Do enjoy today!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

BRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!!!!!! The 'trickery' of it all !! I woke up this morning and looked towards the window .. I have 'sheers' on the bedroom window .. well .. I could see that the sun was out and was so happy .. and my stainless BONG BONGS were NOT in a flurry of sound .. Lilly was even excited .. she bounced on me and out we went .. WELL talk about a SHOCK .. funny how the mind works .. as I lay in bed .. I did hear the furnace come on .. but pushed that WAY WAY back in my mind .. it's a 'brisk' day in the Bay !!! But .. sun is acceptable for as long as it'll be here :-)

The fundraiser went exceptionally well last night .. me tootsies are a tad tender this morning .. seems this old bod can't take a few hours of just plain 'standing ' and shifting from foot to foot .. but .. I think when all is totalled we probably made in excess of $6,000. The Centre is for Handicap Children .. LONG overdue ..

Sydney .. those Cannas get to be about 3' tall and a BRILLIANT red .. I will post a better pic .. thought I had .. but obviously I missed that one (go figger).

Everyone have a SPLENDIFEROUS day :-)

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Transferred the pics of the Cannas from the desktop computer to this laptop .. there are 3 .. tried to keep'em small ..

Hope your weather improves Betty .. the cursed WIND has again started to blow here .. all in a space of 10 minutes !!!
Ahh well .. NO RAIN :-)

So beautiful, gorgeous yard 'M'...still too cold for outside, lordy it's like a cyclone hit my craft room, something on every table, even have the micro heater on to help dry the paint, each time I add a coat and it doesn't dry, out I go to find another project...

I'll need another year of housebound to complete them all...I'll wait till early aft. and perhaps with gloves/earmuffs I too will be able to finish the project I had earmarked for today..

At least it's not snow....

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Another nice day here with chance of some showers ( wouldnt hurt) but I am off to mind the Alberta Sheltie Rescue booth at Sheltie nationals - last day. We have done well

OOoooooooooooooooooo .. a 'penny auction' I love'em and curiously am usually able to win something :-)

Wonderful pic Fancy :-)

Betty .. I was about to go out and get my flower pots hosed down and neatened up .. BUT .. the farmer up the road (north about 2 miles) has spread LIQUID MANURE !! Lawsie .. pretty stinky outside as the wind is FROM the north .. ah well .. usually able to 'get used ' to it after about 30 minutes .. good thing I hung out laundry a couple of days ago !!

Good evening everyone, we had such a nice week. It made the plants come to life. They have had rain in the forecast for a few days now, but didn't come. They are still announcing it, if it does, it will be welcome. We need it now.
But look at what the sun brought us.

Happy Holiday Monday. Looks a bit rainy here in the nation's Capital. Doesn't matter. I have outside work to do a bit this morning before I have an orchestra dress rehearsal at noon.

Hope it's sunny where you are.

HAPPY DAYS everyone :-) I know this is officially 'Victoria Day' .. but have found the name of the holiday changes from day to day depending on what you're reading or listening to .. yesterday I heard one radio station here in TBay calling it "Fire Cracker Day" .. am just hoping no one around here sets any off as Lilly gets NUTSO when she hears them .. even though our neighbours are far away .. THAT sound sure carries.

I've wondered about growin's pupper as well .. sorry re your loss Sydney .. makes my heart ouch..

Am sitting here dearly hoping that the WIND stays away for today!! My landscaper bud wants to fire up the blower to blow away all the .. well little furry dealies that fall from the Poplar trees before the leaves appear .. they're everywhere on the property .. but, in order to WHIZZZzzzzz'em back into the woods .. she can't be fighting the wind ..

Burn .. that Bleeding Heart is awesome .. on a list of 'My Favourites" .. it'd rank right up in the top 5 (if not 3) perennials that I love to see year after year.. when I was a lil gurl .. I remember our elderly neighbour sitting on his front steps with me .. taking one of the 'hearts' .. and taking it apart .. as he took it apart .. he told me a story as the new shape of the heart was altered .. dang me .. I bet he did that for me AT LEAST 20 times .. and I can't remember it .. had something to do with a princess and a slipper though :-) Anyone else familiar with that ? Course .. our neighbour was a BRILLIANT 'raconteur' ... probably where I got my love of story telling from :-)

Enjoy your day wherever you are and whatever you're doing :-)

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

PLUNK, BOOM .. going 'bunkies' here .. caught a wicked chill out there today .. but .. the property is looking almost 'ACES' :-)

Weather remained cool with sunny breaks .. no SNOW or RIAN :-) Watered all the perennials and trees planted last year .. they were hurtin .. now I am !!

Hope all had a great Monday ... Hospice tomorrow for me (working) ..

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Coolish and cloudy here today - a great day to work in the garden but I have been tired and no energy - even had a 2 hour nap this morning! Was working off and on since mid week at our recue booth at Sheltie Nationals - made lots of money to help pay vet bills for our rescues.

Very dry here, really need some rain. I would water but when I turned on my watering system last week discovered a hole in the tubing just by the garden gate and have to wait until the 29th to get it fixed. I will do some hand watering tomorrow and might have an old sprinkler in the shed somewhere - proviging it is not too windy!

Lots of things flowering mainly in the back yard which is really a spring garden.

I have two birds nest spruce shrubs on either side of the path in the front lawn and one has quite suddenly died - I think it might have an ant's nest underneath. Now I will have to try to find another about the same size ( they were at least 6 yrs old) so they match again. And try to get rid of all the ants!

I picked up one of the gold leaf bleeding hearts this year - I am on the hunt for plants with lime leaves, have taken a liking to that especially with shades of rose and purple.

A friend brought me two clematis seedlings today 'Constance' They will go by one of the posts on my new pergola
