Rain, Rain Go Away!
Actually yesterday it did not start raining until about 3pm but unfortunately I had appointments that kept me out of the garden. This morning is Hort. Soceity Plant Share - goes rain or shine and I am 'working' so better get out my rubber boots and long raincoat!
I bought a new Birds Best Spruce yesterday - unfortunately it is only half the size of the older one ( I could have got the same size but did not want to spend $150.00!) and bright green with new growth so it will look a bit funny this year but thats gardening life! ( I comment on this because I am planning on entering the garden competitions this year so of course want everything to look just right!)
What's happening in your neighborhood today...pt3
Hi all ... well .. got called into work this morning .. sometimes I very much appreciate my hospice unit because I am not required to do MEGA heavy lifting ..today was one of those days, and my thigh muscles were VERY happy :-)
Got home at 3pm and have pretty much not stopped til now ..
It was/is GLORIOUS in TBay :-) The property got a FULL cut and trim today (4 acres worth) I hand bombed just Lilly's wee patch of land ..
Wanted to plant the Hosta .. but will hold off .. AND .. best news of all .. My bud (the landscaper) is going to be able to get me flats of flowers at $14./flat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOST of the nurseries here are asking $20. !! She, however, gets a deal as she buys a hundred flats at a time ..
Off to do some watering .. hope everyone is enjoying their weekend (Fancy .. I am sure gonna ask Lorna (my landscaper bud) to be on the lookout for lower prices on Bird's Nest Spruce ..
Ciao
~M~
Oh Marilyn the one I bought was $35.00
Well .. I should be gloomy because of the rain .. but .. I'm not :-)
It's NOT cold .. it's warmish .. walked down to get the paper from the lil tube at the end of the driveway and am BLOWN away (yet again) by nature !! Looking north up the road .. the sky is a slate grey colour .. the buds on the Birch and Poplar and Ash are just now popping open and the contrast of the spring green colour against the sky is amazing .. so .. I trudged back up the driveway to get my camera .. but .. ya know how you hear folks say 'window of opportunity'? Well .. within 3 minutes, I had missed it :-( It's now very bleak looking outside .. totally 5 shades darker (sky) and not a Kodak moment.. We need the rain though .. my perennial gardens are so dry .. and since we have a well .. the water is welcomed ..
Fancy ... guess that's a GREAT price then .. maybe after I do my house work I'll toddle on off to the GreenHouse and see if there are any left .. my landscaper (friend) wants to bulid a corner garden inside the fence .. raised and bordered by Lockstone (so that Lilly can't get at the flowers) .. she makes it sound so easy .. I can picture it .. but sure have a problem with actually building it !!
If any rain is falling into your Sunday .. I hope it's gentle and peaceful .. and giving your gardens a much needed BOOST :-)

OMG noticed I hadn't posted in a few days..kept so very busy as we've had beautiful weather catching up on all I didn't do last weekend..
Started of Friday purchased a glider couch for front deck, thought no problem, I'll put it together, can't be that many pieces (wrong) worked from about 5:00 to 11:30 but did get it done with a few swear words added in because of the instruction...
Of course with rain last weekend and everyone planning garage sales they had to hold off until yesterday..must have been hundreds, I didn't quite make them all but did find many treasures..
Once back from town, it was painting the B&B sign, the new storage door under back deck, few coats of varnish more on the large matt I painted for front deck, digging up an area for seeds/plants and cutting grass for 3 hrs..putting together the water feature I got for Mother's day for front deck..
Today it promises to be an even nicer day, a day of play a nd rest..might include just a bit of trimming and weeding but not a lot..
Because I was a good girl and got all the grunt work done I'll get to play with some of my treasures..I'll take apart the electrical and remove crystals of 3 chandeliers - spray them black and if they are dry this aft. I might even get to add the cups/saucers to the 5 spokes to make candle holder...then I purchased a mini-set of dishes, will go back to the corner garage sale this morning and look for some kind of try to adhere them to and make a birdfeeder, the antique chair I found, I'll wait till next weekend to tackle it..want to take the seat out, attach from underneath chicken wire, add fibermat inside and plant, will look attractive on front deck...
Do hope you are enjoying your day!
Mornin ..
Looks like today 'may' be another write off. Yesterday was sporadically rainy and cool !!
Today looks to be a repeat. Glad I'm booked in for a workshop today.
Hope everyone is going to have an enjoyable day :-)
~M~
MMMMMMMMmmmmm .. can almost SMELL the fragrance from the Lilacs .. beauty colour on 'em.
OH OH .. my granddaughter, Brooklyn, would just LOVE that 'secret dining room' .. lovely ..
Guess I should get a hustle on here ..
Take care everyone

glub glub glub
LOL I take it you're getting a little rain?
We had thunderstorms overnight, it's sunny right now, and we're supposed to be getting more rain and thunderstorms this afternoon and into tonight again. We've been a little dry lately so the rain is welcome here.
Rain is supposed to finish today. I was out there sporting my mudmuffin look yesterday seeding to take advantage of the wet then supposedly warm/sunny for the rest of the week. Can't complain though cuz after May/June we don't get much rain. Boy is the garden ever going KABOOM!!!!
It is NOT raining!
Off an hours drive north to near Bowden , E&M Woodland Nursery to pick up plants ordered last fall for my containers. I have always just filled them with same color petunias ( usually purple or deep rose) but this year doing something different. Color scheme is mainly purple and lime green!
Maybe finally can get into the garden tomorrow and get the potatoes in and all the other plants sitting around all month. I actually repotted some annuals yesterday as they were starting to look a bit stressed in their little pots.
It will be muddy but it has to be done!
It's gorgeous..planted one about 2 years ago, it has grown, flowers don't really show as yet, am guessing it's dark in colour, similar to that of the leaves so hard to tell...do they create a lot of clean-up once the flowering is done?
Luvly carolvan.
Fancy .. quite the 'showy tree' :-) Lovely. I have a few apple trees .. but they're JUST starting to bud now .. hopefully I'll get a show in a week or so.
Re the 'mess' caused by the petals .. the petals are so fine and delicate they tend to fall and just blow away .. at least ours do .. have never actually 'cleaned up' after them ..
My 'vacuuous abyss' commonly referred to as my brain .. is choc a bloc full of info that I'll lilkely forget by tomorrow .. guess that's what hand outs and pamphlets are for :-) The workshop I took dealt with drugs given in a Hospice Unit .. seems they come out with new combos almost weekly .. call me crazy .. but we seem to do just fine with what we have used 'effectively' for the last few years .
It SNOWED here in TBay this afternoon .. how depressing is that !!! Didn't last too long .. but 10 minutes of it was enough for me to give thanks for having no ANNUALS out and planted ..
Off to conjur up supper :-)
~M~
Snow...keep that up 'm' and you'll be able to celebrate 'Christmas in July' for real! 1/2 hr left till hometime..dozing off here, will be an early night..
I just heard there's a frost warning for Regina this evening with temps done to -2 or -3.
We're back to clouds and T-storm warnings.
Talked to my sister in law in Lloydminster and it froze there pretty good last night. It's about time it warmed up all over!!! Thunderstorms Linda????? Isn't that pretty rare out here?? I remember not long after we moved here, there was some thunder, and it was all over the news that night. People were calling in to the tv station to ask what that noise was!!! LOL
Betty, I can just smell those beautiful lilac from here. Such a welcome flower in spring, how I wish they would bloom for longer period.
And Fancy, you ahead of us with the blooms on your crabapple tree. Mine is just about to burst into bloom, I love the show it give. Sure hope there isn't a killer freeze or snow for that matter.
This is a pic of it today. there's a little hummingbird in it as a bonus.
Good morning everyone :-)
Well .. we had frost last night .. I'd say it was light .. but frost it was. Between that and the patch of snow we had yesterday .. who knows if the apple trees will show off. Am so happy DH set up the Hummingbird Feeders when he did .. those poor little things are hurtin !!
Have to report to my colleagues re the workshop yesterday .. that's set up for 10 .. then I'm gettin a haircut .
OOOOOOOooooo .. my landscaper friend visited a Hydrponic GreenHouse yesterday to order her flats for the cemetery .. she has over 100 on order .. and will let me put my order onto hers so I get the 'corporate rate' of $14.00/flat .. way better than $20./flat !!!
Hopefully everyone will have a better than best day :-)
~M~
MG9 and GGD hope you didn't lose any plants..calling for frost here tonight..lordy its dark sky, high wind and cold here this morning..had to go get that coat out this morning...I've planted so much where do you start with a frost warning.. can't cover 10 beds...so, may the fittest survive..might bring in the hanging baskets though..will it ever end..
Burn your tree is gorgeous, went out and looked at mine (only 2 yrs old) noticed beautiful colored leaves but no flowers..did I need 2 - male/female or is it just because it's young???
'M' haven't seen any hummingbirds except for the one in Burn's photo..have all the feeders out though..
Here we are, working in a major metropolis and with all the high rises this morning a group of about 30 Canada geese and babies just strolling around in the traffic and cement parking lots .. dah...don't they know there are better places to live..amazing with everyone driving like fools that everyone stops to let them pass....
Off to the cafeteria, need a western and coffee to fill me up..I'm freezing in here..have micro furnace on but it's only 67 degrees...I need 75...lol
Betty, I do have 2 crabapples. I would think it would need another to form the fruit. but not the flowers. And if there are other people with CA trees in the neighborhood, it would be fertilized by their tree. I think yours is still young. That's my 2 cents worth.
Marilynnes, snow and a frost !?! what's next? We're at the end of May, that can't happen!
Very windy and cold today, so what's up your way, might be on it's way here. DH put up the gazebo Sunday, and that's going to be a great help, won't have to bring in my plants every night.
The hummers have been busy here for the past couple of weeks. I sat at the table on the deck yesterday, and had one come ruffle my hair. I had put their feeders in my flower pot, on the table, so I could take pictures of them, and have a close look at them.
Wow a whole day without rain, sunny/cloudy, cool wind but still able to work outside most of the day. Got a few of the perennials in the ground, started putting wire supports for clematis on the new pergola and with the help of a friend finally got the potatoes planted!
Yesterday a friend and I drove up to a small nursery a an hour or so north of here to pick up the plants I had ordered last fall for my containers, Usually I just fill them with petunias, all one color, this year doing something a bit different.
Heres an idea of the containers which will go on the back steps ( 6 of them down the steps)
What I thought was going to be a WARM day .. turned into a BRrrrrrrrrr day .. came out of the University around 1pm and the wind had picked up from the northeast :-( Another frost warning is out ....
Was able to plant my Morning Glories .. went with pot planting and some around the base of the clothesline .. must say after 3 days of soaking the germination had to have been close to 95% !!!
Burn .. what an awesome idea re the Hummies and their feeders .. we have ours hanging from trees .. and I have to tell ya .. getting 'dive bombed' by one of'em gives you a start :-)
Fancy .. love the container contents .. especially the geranium !!! They'll last a long time ..
Will be ordering my flats this weekend .. my bud is taking me to the Hydroponic greenhouse so I can choose .. IF I can choose :-) I tend to want SOMETHING of EVERYTHING LoL !!!
Guess I should let Lilly haul me about for a bit .. maybe do some watering ..
Ciao
~M~
Frost here last night and forecast for tonight again. Spring? Blink and you miss it.
Got perhaps a 'Touch' of frost overnight .. enough that any Annuals would have been a bit sick I am sure.
Right now we have a BLAZING sun .. and warming temps :-) Have so far washed some 'outside windows' with some formula I found online that uses rubbing alcohol and dish detergent .. did a pretty good job .. no streaking at least .. however .. the screen I took out and scrubbed kinda dried oddly .. put it back in .. came in .. well . .. yeah I can see outside lots better .. but I guess some of the dust I thought I had scrubbed out .. just shifted to a new spot .. LoL .. wil 'live with it' for a day and see if it makes me bananas :-)
Waiting on the Central Air guy .. no doubt Lilly will WELCOME HIM with Barks wide open !!!!
Gimmee strength :-)
~M~
Did not do my garden walk-around this morning, would hate to start my day with a disappointment looking at frozen plants, should have at least taken the potato vines in...a lesson to be had!
Now imagine this, listening to the weather and it said Alaska was going to be around 18 and we will have around 11 (if lucky)..talk about changes in the weather...
Ann, how is your vacation going in Phoenix...
Am excited, providing the tests I'll have on the 10th go well, I'll go to Chicago to meet up with a few DG friends, one is flying in from Calf. (Lizrainey) and Judy (Seedtosser1) lives just north of Chicago..so from work here in the city it will be about a 9 - 10 hr. drive...better save my pennies for the gas..lol..
We've all become such great friends so it will be wonderful to spend part of a week with them..will be leaving Wedn.July 9th...and have to be back for the Monday...
Sounds like a wonderful trip you have planned Betty. I do hope you have lots of fun.
Oh my goodness the sun is shining again today! Better get out there and get some more work done! Need to finish cleaning up the front yard flower beds and start planting there, work on the containers and maybe seed the veggie garden! But not all today of course!
That's the problem fancyvan, the minute we get sunshine we do far more than what our bodies can take and suffer through days of rain with the aches and pains..should be doing 'little' bits...
Oh I am definitely into doing little bits these days - what I do in a a full day now used to take me an hour or two!
Decided to do the containers instead of the front beds in order to clear out a few trays of plants.
I must have scattered 50 pkgs of perrenial seeds over the weekend as well as a grocery bag full of seeds that I deadheaded last fall..so come what may..can always transplant and make new beds..
Awesome news re your upcoming trip Betty .. say 'HI' for me :-) most of all though, ENJOY !!!
Well .. Thunder Bay was awash with sun and warm temps today .. the trees are POPPING ...
The A/C guy turned out to be THREE guys .. I now have holes drilled in places I wasn't expecting to have holes drilled into .. like my exterior wall.. guess it's one of the BAD things about living in a corefloor or ranch style home with no basement .. at any rate .. the electrical inspector typa guy still has to come and inspect the job .. here's hoping we get some temps that'll make the Air look like a great idea :-)
Takin it easy around the yard is simply not easy to accomplish I'm afraid .. I do one thing .. see another that needs doing .. and it's like a Domino effect .. next thing I know 3 or 4 hours has passed and my knees and hips are hollerin at me !!!
DH is having a Root Canal done tomorrow .. so lunch with the son for his BDay is now on hold .. his BDay is May 31 .. but trying to get us all together is so darned difficult it seems !! besides .. I have that Bridal Shower on Saturday at 10am .. I did get some AWESOME tips (thank you Fancy) printed them out in a variety of colours and have included them with the gift.
My best friend (Mom of the groom) was admitted to hosp here in TBay yesterday .. am hoping she gets some good news this aft ... and gets to go HOME .. she had a colonoscopy around 5pm .. am worried for her ..
So .. off I go .. dishes to do .. dog to walk .. and who knows what else :-)
Ciao
~M~
Nice containers Carol! I looooove that geranium. Ü
Joanne
WOW .. very nice Fancy :-) I have never heard of 'Sweet Potato Vine' .. but it sure is nice .. is it hearty ? As in .. can I grow it in a 3a environment? I really think that shade of green is just beautiful in the pots.
Seems to be another nice day on tap here in TBay .. we hit 23C yesterday!! I'm gonna hold down the fort while DH goes for his root canal .. the electrical inspector never did show yesterday .. ahh well .. I have a ton of laundry to do.
As well I didn't hear from my friend last night .. so will have to find out if she's IN or OUT of the hospital
Hope everyone has a wonderful day :-)
~M~
"M" potato vines are annuals, have several colors in them..they are stunning in hanging planters, in my topsy turvy pots!
Hope you hear from you friend today..will set your mind at ease...
Don't you just hate it when contractors give you a date, you plan to be home and spend the entire day waiting only for them not to show...
Fancyvan, love the containers..
Cool here today but will warm up, by tomorrow the rain will move in and is suppose to stay all weekend, wouldn't you know it...
Sat. is the Church Plant sale, they will most likely have it indoors so that's ok and then friend is having an 80th birthday party for her Mother, that was to be outdoors and on the lake, doubt that will be possible...who knows, sometimes weather changes...let's hope!
