May blooms and lots of fun!

(Zone 1)

Oh, great ... I can't wait to see that bloom! I found another site with a photo and it looks different to me than the one I posted above from Daves. Let me go find it again!

Here's the other one I found: http://www.violetaholicsanonymous.org/vadotnet/cpg1.3.5/displayimage.php?album=43&pos=1 and the bloom looks more lavender to me.

I love the looks of the one at Daves Violets.

I think the one at Dave's is the right color and not the other one you found.........mine isn't purple at all...............like the second pic.............

Hi Brenda;
your plants need more light. xanadu is probably the only one that looks like it should, it is a mini sinn.,playful porposie,i would take a top cutting from, it's to langy.put your sinns closer to the lights & if possible do cappalary matting. you can use an old blanket if you like, works great, it gives them just enough humidity with out being a terrium as that is probably to much.unless it's a micro, they do not have to be domed.i don't dome any of mine unless it's a cutting.they should grow compact. not long & langy. when you grow from seed, & once you get babies, lift them out of the soil & put them back down, that increases the growth, also repotting does wonders to.plantlady, no terrium.

Not a strep Susan..lol...didn't I label that one right??Thats and Episcia *Blue Heaven* : )

(Zone 1)

Hi ya Susan! Looks like Dimmer/Kim and your night blooming plants are all Epiphyllum (Orchid Cactus).

The photo of the night blooming one looks like my Epiphyllum hookerii: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2100/

Thanks so much Bonnie! I wasn't sure if they needed terrariums like the micro mini's.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Not the greatest of pictures but can anyone tell me what the middle purple is?
Thanks,
Susan

Thank you so much Bonnie! Everything you say makes sense, mine have been especially deprived of the correct light!

So even those big leaved guys should be growing much more compactly?

I will follow your excellent advice ........ and I will look forward to coming back in a few of months and posting "after" pictures when my sinns are looking more like they should! ^_^

Susan..That strep of yours looks familiar too but I can't think of its name..Now thats a pretty bloom!!

(Zone 1)

Susan: Could that purple one be 'Midas'? http://oglevee.com/Articles/Product/StreptocarpusInfo/galaxy/midas_info.html

Everything looks great Susan! That alsobia will be loving life soon in your warm humid climate!!

My Blue Heaven Episcia has never bloomed, it has such a pretty bloom I wish it would!!

Last fall a DGer (cflowr I believe) sent several of us some cuttings of a beautiful pink blooming Epiphyllum (Orchid Cactus) and mine has finally started sending up new shoots like the ones in your picture, I'm excited to see it growing.

That is the SAME epiphyllum I just gifted to Susan.
I just have decided (hard decision) that I don't have the passion for Epi's I once did and am only keeping Deutsche Kaiserin hanging around.
Cindy, if you read this I just want you to know that I appreciated the Epi's VERY much but Susan has a MUCH better climate for growing them and I'm sure much more room for such a robust grower :) I couldn't cut Deutsche much more and decided to share :)
Susan, the one that says Unnamed pink is the one that Brenda is talking about and to me it reminds me alot of Deutsche Kaiserin and very well could be :)

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Susan, the alsobia Brenda sent you is the same as the two rooted cuttings I sent you.........put them all in the same basket and you will really have a big plant........

Kim, I am still pampering Deutsche Kaiserin and XCodanthes 'Vista'............before they get a new pot ................want the Vista to keep growing all six rooted cuttings you sent before putting them in a basket.

(Zone 1)

Oh, now I love Epiphyllums! I have the one large Hookeri that was given to me as a small rooted cutting back in the mid 1970's. I have a few smaller unidentified ones that I received in trades when I first joined DG and I've rooted them but no blooms yet. I sure hope one is pink!

I thought I recognized that plant in the hanging basket! I had a huge basket of Alsobia dianthiflora and a small plant of Alsobia cygnet ... they were so pretty when in bloom! Both died on me after almost a year! :( I am really moving in the direction of plants that survive on neglect! ... well not total neglect but plants that aren't fussy!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know who sent two leaves to me sometime last summer or fall............here is a pic of them.......they rooted from pieces of the two leaves. I can't remember who sent these. Maybe I will put them in the same basket as all of Kim's different kinds.

I want so badly to see a first bloom from Kim's this year...............

I sent that to you Gail... It is the bigger one in the picture... I spoke to Keyring last week and asked about a book on The AV family... The name of the book is The Miracle Houseplants The Gesneriad Family by George Elbert so I am going to look at the book now... With priorty shipping it cost me about 8.00 the book cost me 2.25... can't beat that...

Gail I am almost positive that your cuttings are also from Cindy/cflowr. She sent cuttings from that pink epi to a whole group of us all at the same time last fall and I remember your name being mentioned in the group. ^_^

I, for one, think that it is so cool to be "related" to all of you by cuttings from the same mother plants ...... because so many have shared here on DG!!

~Brenda

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Oops, sorry Susan, I guess there are so many sharing epi cuttings it's hard to keep track! LOL I do know that cflowr sent a bunch of them out to a lot of us!

Let us know how you like the book, I wonder if I could find it on Amazon, off to go look.......

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey, Susan , I think you sent me this one........now don't laugh but I was in a hurry and just stuck it in a pot and take a look now...........I need to get it in its' own pot and/or take cuttings. I haven't been a good mommy to her. I didn't even cut the leaf when you sent it....just stuck it in this pot with another plant you sent! (LOL)

I am going to order that book and the new revised on on Growing to Show (for AVs and is offered on the AVSA site)

That's it Gail.. The book I got is used but I don't care I am thrilled with it...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to let her grow in her own pot (another one) for a while and then take cuttings from her. What color does she bloom, Susan? Do you know?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Gail,
No I don't know as she has never bloomed for me... She came to me as one leaf then I gave you the second one and yours is bigger then mine now... I am going to put it outside again this year.. Does this hang down or grow up? Well I am off to bed as I have work tomorrow... Hope you all have a great night...
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think that the ones I have like to hang down so I put them in baskets even if they are a 6" basket.

Thanks again for sending it to me!!!!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Susan- I have at least 1 book that I can think of by the same authors as yours. I will have to look for that one!
