Fairy's Perennial Co-op pictures, chat and misc convo

Springfield, IL(Zone 5b)

Stella-I think I have that creme brule heuchera in my front bed..we lucked out and got a few scraggley babies last fall at 75% off..they came back REALLY nice this spring too! :)

Stacey and Connie..I hit a few GH's over my way this afternoon too..was a good day to do it!!..I picked up some veggie plants (poblano pepper and broccoli) and a handful annuals to start on my planters. (Golden pineapple sage, silver thyme, a 6 pack of coleus, some million bells..)
I also got to chase packing peanuts all over my yard..I use them in the bottoms of my REALLY big planters to make them lighter, and I will be darned if a big gust of wind didn't send them ALL over the span of three yards in the time it took me to open the bag of potting mix... ACK!
joyce..I like your pond..the DBF and I have been talking about a water feature in our back yard since we moved in..how hard was it to install?

I am tellin ya-we need to take a round robin a Sat here in the near future!!

To put the pond in wasn't hard for me at all. I went flower shopping in Indiana and my husband dug it in while I was gone!! It was a surprise. He did complain quite a bit on how far you have to dig down. He did most of the digging and my boys hauled it off in a wheelbarrow to a low spot in our yard. At first he dug it too low and we got a bunch of rain so that you couldnt even see the pond. We had to drain it and layer the bottom of the hole with pavers to raise it.

Now, look what I got in the mail today from Wayside!! Green envy echinacea--can you believe the size of this monster?? It has a bud forming too!!!

Suzy-will you be there in August? I'd love to meet you. I will definitely make plans to be there. Anything that happens here in Illinois is usually way up by Chicago, it's so much faster for me to go to Missouri or Indiana. Please keep me posted on stuff that goes on there, maybe when my hands get healed I can make a trip. It all depends whether my doctor wants to do the surgery on my shoulder quickly or take his time.

Here is a pic of my mom when she and I went flower shopping last week. I think we ended up with 52 plants to put in

Joyce-don't I owe you some $$-dmailing you!! I am waiting for a day that is a little cloudy and not 100 mile an hour winds-I will try to get some today!!

Centralia, IL(Zone 6a)

Suzy,
I clicked on that link. There's lots going on huh? I'd love to see Dan Trimmer too. Please make sure to look me up before then and hopefully we can meet. That would be so cool.

Toofew, mom loves to garden too. She just can't get down and dig or pull weeds anymore like she used to. Last year she wanted to help me and while I was at work hoed my daylily bed. She hoed out a Mort Morss daylily that costs $35 and got 4 of my new baby heucheras too. But the bed looked nice when she was done! :)

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh no!!LOL You mom has that look on her face like "OMG-what did we do"!! Looks like you got a lot of BIG pretties!!

Centralia, IL(Zone 6a)

stacey,
hold off on the $ until I hear what is going on with them. I know Pam was supposed to order them from the vendor, but she hasn't said anything lately. I ordered that one single one way back in February through Wayside. The ones we get from Pams should be little. I do know all three orders from TNN should be here either this week or early next, so I can send your stuff to you. It's just a waiting game. Luckily my hand is feeling sooo much better, it's unreal after only 2 days! I will have to talk to you about some things anyway because I ordered a few things not expecting some stuff to make it through the winter, so I may have several other extras. (Ain't tellin' ya what they are either!)
Love ya!

You know what we do? Everyone know that at spring time you want to go flower shopping. We save change from September on. Once in awhile we slip a dollar or a $5 in there. Then, we save aluminum cans all year too. We got $61 this year to go shopping with, just from cans. That way it doesn't hurt the checkbook so bad when you do the spring shopping.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I like that idea Joyce-great plan!! I will start keeping my change for flowers and some cans too!! JLMK if they come in so I can get you the $$-if she doesn't get them, they will be in mine I beleive, so either way we will have some fro next spring!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Joyce, I should have said I am not a member, don't even grow many irises and daylilies (or hostas) so depending on me for the dates will be a big bust. I just have gardening friends that are in the club, so I know they have that sale. (Also an iris sale in end of July, but I bet you saw =that on the calendar) I'm sorry. But dmail me for my phone number & if you're in town, I can toddle over. (Not going to sit through a lecture on daylilies, tho LOL!

I have more, but don't want to bore you all tooo much!!

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Stacey your dog wood looks a little lop sided rofl jk, Great pics, I am waiting to plant my babies out tomorrow, suppose to drop down to 40 tonight so will be turning the heaters on in the gh, I can't believe the great deals we got yesterday, I want to go back and get some more of the pink baby's breath and 2 of the heliotrope, among other things lol, I may have Ken drive me over there tomorrow morning b4 I start transplanting it all. I am hoping to get a bunch of them in the ground :o) I should be receiving a TNN order tomorrow sometime in the afternoon, don't know if I will try and plant those out or baby them for a few days, I also need to find another anemone to replace the one that died :(

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Don't forget the baby's breath came from aprrans and the helipotrope came from the other place....I didn't get the lopsided thing until I looked at it and the pic was sideways!!LOL I planted most of what I got yesterday & on Fri out today-a few things I am not sure where I want them yet:)

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

oh shoot I thought the baby's breath came from the other place too. thats ok Kens wanting to go to Parrans too. I think he wished he would have went with us Saturday after he saw what all I got, after left he was asking me all kinds of questions about parrans lol, it is way bigger than the one in Monroe.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I didn't know he was into flowers at all....just veggies...

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh no, his mom got him into flowers long ago, I just got into them in 06, But since I have started he is now just the muscle ^_^ I do most all the planting and weeding, he does all the tilling, but this year, the veggie garden is his baby. I will plant but he is gonna take care of that, I won't have time to. We took a walk around back when we got home from Church this afternoon, and he is going to expand the veggie garden. I started some white cucumber seeds http://www.valueseeds.com/archive-425.html and baby yellow watermelon seeds last night in the gh. http://www.valueseeds.com/archive-521.html

My tomato plants and green pepper plants are ready to be planted out there (as you seen they are getting hugh) I still need to buy a few veggie plants, I have my okra seeds and bean seeds ready to go, just waiting on him to get it tilled so I can get it all planted out.

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

OH Fiary!! Which cultivar is that Pink dogwood?/ i am looking for one and the color is stunning!!
I love it. Very beautiful indeed!!
Julie

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Julie, I don't mean to butt in here, but if you want one like Fairy's look for a red Dogwood. Hers is red (in the trade lingo for dogwoods). I learned this when a person I was helping wanted a pink dogwood and was disappointed when it was a paler pink than she was thinking. She has seen one down the street she liked, but it was "red", and she asked for the wrong plant.

Suzy

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

OK I thought that might be the case!! There are several I have looked into but I think if I could see them
blooming of course that would be ideal! I need to go shop for it soon so i can distinguish better the color!
Thank You!!
Julie

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Another trick is to get the variety you want settled when they bloom, or get it narrowed down to two or three varieties, and then go in the fall to pick it out. There is a big variance in autumn color, even within the exact same variety (this should not be the case because they should all be identical, but they often aren't) Dogwoods should turn a deep red, but they can sometimes be a bright red, and sometimes they aren't either color, just a sort of rusty-green color, which you do not want.

This will put off your purchase and planting until fall, and I have yet to have anybody heed my advice, but believe me it is sound advice. Maples are the same way. :))

Suzy

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Suzy, that makes good sense. Would that apply to kousa dogwoods, too. I'm in the market for one.

Fairy, I love the tulips! What a unique planting.

Here's my grape hyacinth. I originally planted them with some daffodils, but the daffs have faded away. I think I need to replant but I hate to disturb them because they are just so pretty.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Julie-I get seedling every year all around that tree, so if you are game to try it, I can dig you some up and then you can see-I can't guarantee they will be true to color though is the only thing

Thanks for the info Suzy-the tag on it when we moved in was faded, so I could only make out the common name which was pink dogwood-I will go look it up now!! It is a little lighter in person than in the picture, but not by a lot...

Connie-OMG-I forgot-Chris said to tell Kenny thanks!! he was SHOCKED to put it mildly-I told him how nice he was on Sat and how he hadn't been feeling too great and that he is really just a gian teddy bear!! Save one of those yellow baby watermelons for me:) I have to get my veggie seeds started this week and some of my marigolds and such...
