Today I`ll share a picture of a mutant Japanese Morning Glory I`m growing for the first time. The tag says red duplicate. These came from a friend. They aren`t for sale or trade but I thought some people might like to see the pictures.

I really like leaves like that, at first I thought something was really wrong with the plant.. but, found out that is how the leaves are shaped.. pretty neat on the variety that are available nowadays.
I had 5 seeds from a kind person here at DG for the demono mutant strain. All five germinated last week-. No tru leaves yet...I am waiting anxiously as I can barely see them beginning! Thanks for sharing the pic!
The opening pictures on this thread were breathtaking without the flower.
Many of us live where fall comes too soon for those hugh nhil flowers without taking them in. Most of us don't have room inside for about 50 two gallon pots. Nonetheless, the outstanding foliage of some varieties to me exceeds the beauty of the flowers. Please don't boo me girls, but, we don't show the foliage along with the flowers often enough. I wish someone with wide experience with varieties would rate and list the gorgeous foliage varieties. I might have gobs of some and not even know it because I so often see only the pics of the flowers. Has enybody ever made a list of the variegated varieties.
This year I have invested in three bags of NO DAMP OFF milled sphagnum moss to grow important seeds in, but am waiting for the weather to warm up a little. Not gambling this year by starting too early, it just increases the period of vulnerability.
Does anyone know a chainstore where I can find bentonitic clay, as in old fashioned unscented cat litter. I grew potatoes in 20 gallon tubs 2 years ago, and I poked 5 1" diameter holes all the way to the bottom, and filled the holes with the bentonite clay. In the fall when we emptied the tubs, I fould that the roots had clustered around and had sought out the clay in the holes. Since then I have used the clay as an soil additive like pearlite when I am potting. I think it helps raise the pH a little and helps get it up to the feeding range of most of the plants we grow in the summer. Our soil here is about pH 5.5, which is very acid.
I am now out of the bentonite and my sources locally have dried up.
I heard about the bentonite clay from a friend who rooted a Geranium cutting in it, it being totally inorganic, in a tiny little old tuna fish can.
When she showed it to me it was 2 feet tall and blooming its heart out.
This makes me wonder about the desert species of mgs and pH.
Oops, the no damp off can be ordered from mosserlee.com or their retailers. Order from them, don't waste your time looking for it.

Karen.. I love the lavender with the purple spots... sure looks enough like blue to make it in this years blue garden.. and the flower shape is stunning ..is that what you were refering to as a variation in the flowers.. basic flower with an additional frill.. or were you talking color there..
I hope to have more than one picture to post shortly.. I've only a Hatsu Arashi blooming now.. and it's been blooming for weeks..so far ahead of others started the same time... but it 's flower looks black.. till you get with in 4 ft of it.. and since we haven't seen the sun here in a week or so.. I've not got a good picture of it.. since the only sunny day had it with 4 three day old blooms.. .. now I feel that way myself some times.. and I don't need any pictures then either... Gordon
Yesterday and today is rain, rain and more rain so it is a perfect time to pot and transplant. Everything is watered in good.
Gourd, I remember seeing the wierd cotyledon on some unknown seeds I bought from Komeri back when they used to fill my orders. It was a willow dianthus and that is when I began to learn about mutant systems and how they are maintained.
Frank, Thanks for the tip on where to buy the no damp off product. I think they have that old fashioned kind of cat litter at Wal Mart but I haven`t looked in a while.
GordonHawk, This is what I mean by variations. Some of the flowers are very double and others are single with little frills.

Frank, I think they had some of that kitty litter at a store here called Dollar Tree in 5# bags, but don't know if it has an odor. I'll check next time I go.
A lovely pink bouquet.
Those points are really neat looking, they really make a statement when they look like that in big numbers.
Gourd, thanks for the tip. we also have a dollar tree, and I bought a 5# bag there, but it was diatomaceous earth low grade. It is good for the top inch of the soil or so for mealy bugs and fungus gnat larva control to some extent because it is like microscopic broken glass.
I have been dreading unraveling my indoor blue dawn, so you know procrastination just makes it worse. I finally bought a $20 pair of cable cutters and cut the fencing wire in little pieces to liberate the vines. An ounze of prevention is worth a $20 pair of cable cutters. lol. I shouldn't have had the two wire cages so close together. At least I never broke a single vine. It looks like It is budding up. I am getting excited. This year we ought to census this specie and start a pollen bank for trading. One of these days it is going to happen.
my dw does counted crosstitch, designs patterns, and has to have a filing system for here flosses. I really like her little 5" wide box with clear plastic hangers glued to 5" wide, shallow, zip loc bags, that all hang in their order. They are about $30 if you can still find them anywhere, but they would hold a few hundred mg kinds.
Thanks for all the tips........... Frank
Hey Karen,
I like the tiny string bean leaves.. they look cool..
That last one is also really goodlooking, I like the red center, then the dark blue star, it really makes it stand out. Then the rays on it, this one seems to have everything, even the picotee.. I like it a lot.
I like the last one too. Love the star pattern.
Me, too! Nice pattern and colors on that last photo!
Love all your photos Karen!!! This one is real nice http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4934752
Thanks everyone. That blue one is a result of open pollinated kikyo x youjiro grow out seeds believe it or not. The color jumped out at me and the substance of the flower is real nice too. I might work with this one to see what happens next.
This next picture is from some seeds bluespiral sent back to me because of a lack of growing space and I`m so thankful. They turned out cute. I`ll share more later!
Karen
