My potting portion of the MAN'S shed. (not that he uses the shed....I do though) shhhhh ....don't tell him
The long view
My guilty pleasure which will be everchanging.....it's not my land, it belongs to the county but i couldn't stand looking at the weeds so I put in two island beds with an arbor and it is my gift to the people of my town. I have had many people stop to thank me for adding the gardens as sweat was dripping down my face. My pleasure!! But could you stop and pull some weeds :~)
My first attempt at a lasagna bed. Put down the cardboard and compost last fall and added the rhodies this spring. Plan on adding spring blooming bulbs this fall and will leave it at that. All in all I give lasagna a thumbs up, especially compared to rototilling a large section to be planted by the end of this week because forty pounds of plants are on their way. WHAT WAS I THINKING??
Great shots, Weeze! Nice arbor. What type of tree is it that you did the lasagna bed under?
Victor, it's one of our all too common scrub pines. They are a nuisance tree as far as I'm concerned, but I happen to like that one. I call it the thumb tree because of it's shape. Yes like a thumb, also uncommon for the scrubs. They are usually tall and gangly and gnarly but I have found their beauty when the sun is setting and every branch and every pinecone is outlined in a soft red. All the birds seem to congregate in those trees and somehow the trees, the birds, the soft light all come together. I have had at least a half dozen removed from my property but now I have learned to almost love them. Almost. Til I spend all fall raking 5 million pine needles.
The only reason I asked was that I would not do a bed over a valuable tree.
Well, there ya go..not considered a valuable tree in these parts. More likely, OOOhhh I have sap all over my car!!
nice pics.... a little bit of green counts in my book.... i don't know what a lasagna bed is... but looks good
Amy I am so sorry to here about the little rodents eating your plants. Through wire cages and all, yikes!
Everyones pics look so nice. a lot more green grass than around here. I think we need some rain.
Thanks...
i honestly don't know what happened - we'll dig in a few more weeks and see what's down there.
Maybe the cold/warm cycles were enough to separate the wire? These weren't bought cages, but me and DH making an omlette of the hardware cloth and folding in the edges...
Some things look good though - go figure...
i think maybe the ones he made were sturdier than mine - it was easier with two of us.
pretty Jen
These type of threads are my favorite! It is so nice to see what other people are doing. I learn so much.
Onewish1, I looked through your album and would like to know what the burgundy colored ground cover is in one of your photos? I live at the edge of the woods and would love to have so ideas on groundcover.
I have an area around a brook I am trying to do something with this year. This would probably be a great thread to ask for some suggestions?
Iresine .... bad news it's annual... i left everything there to die back by it's self and hopefully re-seed... it didn't... but that year I had nothing to plant there... boy did that fill fast that whole patch was 12 tiny plants

i want some of that - i saw it for the 1st time at the fall RU at Logee's...
it really was pretty by the end of summer... it did take a while to fill in though
Flower, I was looking at the view of the south side with the chain link and all I could think of was how Clematis would love to grow through that link fence :~)
I have a trumpet vine planted there and I'm giving it this year to see if it takes off if not I've def been thinking Clematis.
I just planted an Artic Queen in a container to travel up a trellis I attached to the bottom of my deck, first time trying Clematis.
I've been trying to post a pic of the lower half of the "L" but for some reason it's not posting.
Arctic Queen is one of my favorites. She bloomed for me the first year planted.
Awesome!!!
Cute entrance area. very happy looking. How do you like the solar light? i keep toying with the idea of getting a few, but do they really give off enough light?
They don't last all night but they give a nice glow, I got a great deal on them at Big Lots 2 years ago.
Looks great, Weeze. I'll get around to some bed shots soon.
filled in quick.... looking good
venu-I like your edging
Thanks all. jen, the edging was all leftover "stuff". The metal edging was put in to keep crash and trouble out. It worked even though both dogs are big enough to step over it. Onewish, a lasagna bed is an area that you want to make a garden in. You put down cardboard and cover with compost. 6 months later the grass is gone and it's ready to plant. Preplanning is needed but it is so much easier than digging up grass.
wow that's kind of cool.... we will be doing more of the digging of the grass in a few weeks.... oh well next time
Your dog is named Crash, Weeze? That's my cat's name!
Actually, no Victor. They are Casey and Dexter but I refer to them as crash and trouble when they are not behaving as the model canine citizens they should be. How did you come to name your cat Crash? Having had several cats during my life a few scenarios come to mind :~)
Not very creative. The first morning after bringing them home, he made a mad dash and ran right into the sliding door. The name was born.
That was a scenario I had in mind. Kittens are so much fun to watch. They're like little tornadoes.
