BIRD FILES!!

North Augusta, ON

We have a Bug Files and a Plant Files, how about a Bird Files too???

There has to be almost every kind of bird already featured in the bird watching forum, why not gather the info together and make a Bird Files??
Many gardeners watch the birds, it would be a great resource for Dave's garden.

What do you all think?

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

I like that idea!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I like the idea--I love watching birds and it would get me more inspired to learn about them and photograph them if we had birdie files.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Good idea, but probably a lot of work for Dave. FungiFiles would be nice too. Just noticed that one of todays articles is about Morels.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I said over a year ago that BirdFiles will be the next logical step, sounds fun. Maybe it will happen this year.

North Augusta, ON

Wouldn't it be awesome??

Shouldn't be that much work, wouldn't it be the same format as the others, just re-name it Bird Files...LOL

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Gotta have some great experts to keep tabs on things and make sure that information that is entered is correct. The programming is probably the easiest thing. Getting some Admin help by someone who is an expert in the field will be the hardest. BugFiles couldn't exist without Kennedyh. We need a bird expert (or more than one)

North Augusta, ON

Aren't there a few hanging out in the Bird Watching forum??

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

There already is Bird Watching:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/birdwatching/all/

I have a ton of threads watched there. A fascinating and beautiful forum

We're after a Bird Files, just like bug files and Plant Files.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Aaah, I get it. I'd really enjoy that and hope it's a possibility.

I suggested a bird files a month or so ago when the topic came up of new forums. I know I would love it as so many others would too ... I bet it would be one of the most clicked on pages on DG!

Hmmm ... we gotta have at least one Bird expert here in this Garden! Has anyone asked on the Bird Watching forum? There are some real knowledgeable folks over there. I sure hope we find someone who will volunteer for this project! I Love Plant Files and am always looking up plants and I know I would use Bird Files a lot too!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I have 3-4 books which I try to use, but the photography is the pits. Right now I usually end up asking someone for an ID. In PlantFiles there's a button to click on and Dave pronounces the word. Could we have something like that for the bird's call?

North Augusta, ON

Good idea!!

That would be soooo cool.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Birds are just as important part of our gardens as the bugs and flowers. I vote for BIRD FILES as a place to go to help identify birds. There are some fantastic photographers on the Birdwatching forum who I am sure would be happy to add to the files.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I would love that and can contribute pictures that my brother has taken, he's a birder. He wouldn't have time to post them but I would love to add images.

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

This sounds like a great idea! I'm all for it.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I contribute to the Birdwatching forum and think a Bird Files would be a great idea. I wish I were an expert , but I'm not...if I were though, I would be glad to help.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Love the idea of BirdFiles. Hope this can take place.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, please!

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

That would be a great idea!

Birdfiles would have my support 100% and I would do everything I could to help. Seems like Birdfiles would be hugely popular around the world.
The opening paragraph from a wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdwatching
"Birding has emerged in recent decades as a popular hobby in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people consider themselves to be serious birders, and several million regard themselves as casual birders. Birding is even more popular in Britain than it is in the United States. Roger Tory Peterson played a central role in the emergence and defining of modern birding, both in the United States and Britain."

Nobody could make an online birding resource better than Dave!!

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Sounds like a great idea. Count me in.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

This is a great idea - I hope the challenges to making it happen can be overcome!

faeden, in the meantime, here's a link to the Cornell web site, which has tons of bird information, including a sample of their call:

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/

Choose the common name of any bird from the list, and you can hear a short sample of their call.

North Augusta, ON

I love that website!! Thank you for that.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

You're very welcome! I'm quite addicted to it, and use it all the time to help solve mystery bird calls that I've heard in the yard. ;->

Barb

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Barb, for that link. I am new to birding and every bit of
information is wonderful for me.

Disputanta, VA(Zone 7a)

Another yes vote for adding a Bird File! That would be such a valuable addition, probably another first for a gardening website. Only makes sense to be DG's.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I vote yes.

Blytheville, AR(Zone 7a)

Me, too.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Tap, tap, tap. That's me tapping my foot hoping Dave pops in here
and gives us some idea of whether this can be done.

I'm a Yes!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Is one allowed to post this in the Bird Watching forum to see if there is more interest?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think that would be a good idea--when people ask for a new forum they'll often post in some of the other related forums to help get more interest so I think that would be helpful here too. My guess is this is just like the requests for a new forum, Dave and the admins sit back and watch to see what sort of interest develops before they jump in. It might also help if there were a couple of bird experts who would step forward and express willingness to help out with some of the behind the scenes stuff (like the PF and BF admins do), that would probably make the request much more viable.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes!!

I'm all for a Bird Files, I even talked to Dave about it when I was in Texas just before NameMedia bought DG. I think at the time it was on the one of these days list. LOL Since we call the Plant Files PF and the Bug Files BF what will we call this one so we can abbreviate it?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

BDF?

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

AF Avian Files

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Avian Files is what I had in mind too...

Feather Files, lol

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Looks like lots of us have an interest. I would help and contribute where I could, and would love to see this happen. not being an expert by any means limits my ability to help in depth with proper classifications, but the animal kingdom is set up like the plant and insect kingdoms and I can muddle my way around those without too many faux pas. (got some great raptor images to contribute)

North Augusta, ON

So good to see a lot of interest. Now we just have to get Dave to notice...
