Anyone else's spouse think they are bananas?

Thanks Pirl!

Thom, I think it's terrific that you are taking the Master Gardener courses . . . I hope to do that in the future! It sounds like you have a colourful family!

My family thinks I am nuts too, though my father does garden, and does weed. Maybe, you could make your parents a Japanese Zen garden - you know - all gravel with one perfectly placed ornamental grass. Your mom could spray RU on the gravel :-) . . . . just a thought.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL, Michaela.

Pam, every time I read the title of this thread "Anyone's spouse think they are bananas" I mentally think "yes of course, funny you should ask." -Carrie

Thom, you have my sympathy and support! I think you ought to sneak into your mom's house and steal all the RoundUp. Sounds like it's deadly in her hands.

I'm the only gardener in the house, but the others do enjoy it. I feel lucky!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Harper - wouldn't it be great fun to replace the Round Up contents with a liquid food?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Or 'secretly replace it with Folgers'?!!

DH does think I'm nuts as my love of gardening crossed over to the realms of pure obsession about 3 years ago. However, he is not totally disinterested himself. Problem is, we have fairly different styles - he likes formal gardens and japanese gardens; I like a more natural, woodland style. He also LOVES grass and I'd be happy to get rid of all grass. So, all that is to say, I often find myself wishing that he would take no interest in the yard and let me do wahtever I want. It would be so much easier than trying to compromise all the time!!

Hi my name is Midge and I am a newbie that joined DG last week. I have been reading this thread and have been cracking up for about half an hour. There are about 10 new perennials I just bought today sitting on my deck waiting to be planted in a bed I haven’t created yet.

Of course my DH and family think I’m nuts. While my friends are asking for jewels for their gifts, I always ask for a plant, a new cool pot, a gardening tool, or a gift card to Lowes / Home Depot. He knows buying plants and planting them is my favorite obsession. This includes houseplants. I have a jungle in the house. I even buy houseplants for people that I think they will be successful with.

The only thing that irritates me is that the man who does none of the planting and maintenance will on occasion walk by a weed that is about 2 feet high in our paver walkway and not pull it out then proceed to come in and say there’s a weed out there that I better pull. Hellooo McFly I say whats wrong with your hands. If it bothers you and you noticed it pull it out or keep quiet. Thank god I usually don’t have anything in my hands and I have self control.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome Midge!

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Be HAPPY he doesn't pull out the weed, on the rare occasion when my DH decides to be helpful and remove what he thinks is a weed he invariably takes a power tool and whacks one (or more) of my plants to death.

I was waiting for that Pam. Welcome Midge. I think most of the complaints here have been about weeding out the keepers. Frankly, I suspect, they are exaggerating here and are just using it as an excuse to order more stuff for their gardens.

As for jewels versus plants...it's an art in life to find balance (what kind of jewels?) ^:~.

Laurel

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Heck, I don't NEED an excuse! :)

BTW the last time I went to my local nursery I leaned over the counter and whispered conspiratorally (sp?), Don't tell my husband I'm here, to which the proprieter replied, Didn't you see the sign? and pointed to a plaque hung behind the cash register which said: "Your husband called--he said you can buy anything you want." I about peed my pants laughing.

Funny, Pam!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It is funny and reminds me of the one about the guy in the dressing room at the golf club when the cell phone rings. He answers and the female voice, at the other end, says the house they saw and loved has been reduced to a million dollars so he tells her to go ahead and buy it. Then she said she was having car problems but happened to see this beautiful Jaguar convertible and he tells her if she likes it to buy it. Then the ring she saw at the jewelry store was on sale so he tells her to buy it. She's so thrilled and thanks him. He puts down the phone and another guy asks who was on the phone and the man says, "Darned if I know - it's not my phone".

Pirl-lol

In regard to Eth and her RoundUp...lol...I've tried that, but she just goes and buys more after I leave. My father laughs at it all. In his opinion, if he can't mow it, he doesn't want it, and as to gardening for the sake of food, he feels that's what grocery stores are for!

Last year, I gave Paul a pair of garden shears, and was instructing him on how to cut back some of the Daffodil stalks that had died back...pointing out very carefully to him what a Daffodil stalk looked like, about 5 minutes later I go to where he is at, and he has an ash can full of "Daffodil stalks." He hands me the shears, says his hands are dirty, and goes into the house. The "Daffodil stalks" were Iris foliage, some DL foliage, several new tips on Hellebore, and some how or another some Barberry twigs got into the ash can as well!

Needless to say, I flipped, exchanged some colorful language, gave a rather curt lesson in the HUGE (to me) difference in Daff foliage compared to the others, and forbid him to help. He just cocked his head and smiled...I think he knew what he was doing!

Now, I just have him pick out plants/flowers that he would like, and have him do other chores that do not involve shears, loppers, pruners, or any other cutting or slicing instrument!

Speaking of Eth, guess who is going up this weekend to weed?

lol

Welcome Midge!

Funny sign Pam. Very funny joke pirl!

cross posted. edited to say: Thom, sounds like Paul knew EXACTLY what he was doing!

Funny Thom. Certainly sounds premeditated to me!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sounds too smart and too suspicious to me, Thom. Tell Paul we're onto his tricks!

plantfan: that is the best description of an "out there somewhere" DH I have ever heard. Mc Fly is perfect and I knew who you meant right away.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi midge and welcome. You're lucky that your DH knows what a weed is. LOL My DH is not allowed to touch anything near my gardens, especially with a weedwhacker unless I'm standing right beside him. LOL DH and I went to a flower/garden show on Sunday (only reason he went was because his company sponsored it) and I was looking at the water features. He told me we couldn't do anything like that cause we didn't have a source of water - no existing pond or stream!!! I tried to explain to him that the ponds were built with liners, lined with stones and then filled with water from the garden hose, but I don't think he got it. The problem we would have with having a pond and fountain is running electricity to the pump. He looked at me and asked what you need electricity for - didn't realize they were run with pumps!!!!! He can referee basket ball though and watch sports on TV and if I need something heavy lifted he usually will do it if I ask (lots of times I don't ask)!!!! He will grocery shop also (if I make a list) and that gives me a few minutes to spend at DG or in the garden!! Eleanor

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Welcome, Midge, and I'm glad you weren't timid about jumping in. (Some people lurk for a long time before they push send. People like me should usually think three times before pushing send!) I'm sure you'll love it here.

BTW, if this weed was growing out of her paver walkway, couldn't we assume it WAS, in fact, a weed? -Carrie

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I think Paul is on to my tricks also...lol! He now knows some of the names from the NE Forum here. And I speak of some of you like you are/were neighbors. I was in a state of almost panic/mild anxiety over the shipment I sent to Anita, due to sending it out Priority Mail, and the USPS not quite getting it there, WHEN I wanted it there...lol. When I speak of JI's, JM's, natives, dwarf conifers, or Dahlias, usually a select few names pop up...and he's like, "You don't even know these people!" And I always argue that I do!

I guess that would make me really musa.

:-)

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Could use the RoundUp Mom here in Atlanta. Rock gardens are a mess of weeds. If she brings her own RoundUp even better. It's getting so expensive.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Atlanta! Can we both come, I'll even spring for airfare and the RoundUP!

lol ;-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thom, Paul must be realizing by now that your extended family is growing!

Marietta, NY(Zone 5a)

Now wait a minute, Thom. You let Paul know that I am born and bred in Scranton, so you might actually know me. ( of course been gone 14 years now.)

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Does this mean we're related? I mean it's a Southern thing to invite. How many acres of RoundUp can you afford? Can Mom bake shoo fly pie?

Victor, Sofonisba, Carrie thanks for the welcome. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. How can you not just jump in. This group is really funny and friendly. I still haven’t finished reading all the threads yet. Sitting here next to DH just cracking up all by myself while he just gives me that your nuts face. I told him I wrote about him here; he feels special now.

Laurel- If I were into jewelry right now I would ask for Opals, Emeralds, Rubies you know the usual stuff. I do have some nice pieces but I’m always afraid I’m going to loose it. I’ve done that before. That’s not fun. I don’t really have many occasions to wear them anyway. I am a little careless.

Phuggins- I usually hide some or all of my plants for a while until I’m ready to give him the look when I hear him say, “Hmm, I see you bought more plants”

Gel836 and Eleanor I see you can relate to what I am saying we must have similar stories. ;-)

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Midge, you said:
"I do have some nice pieces but I’m always afraid I’m going to lose it. I’ve done that before. That’s not fun. I don’t really have many occasions to wear them anyway. I am a little careless."

I lost my wedding band about a month ago! It was the first day I was out raking leaves and realized that I still had my wedding rings on. (I usually take them off in March/April and don't put them back on until October/November!)

I took them off, put them in my jeans pocket, and when I got in the house later, only my engagement ring was there. Someone's going to have a nice find at the bottom of my leaf pile 100 years from now! I'm just glad it was the band (thin) and not the diamond!

Howell, NJ(Zone 7a)

PrimroseSue - I'm so sorry. I've done the pocket thing too. My wedding band (same as yours thin no diamond) is the only thing I can't take off. Fingers and the rest of me got a little chunky during my second pregnancy. Going to have to get it cut off one day. I only wear my diamond ring on special occasions. Most expensive piece I own. Can't risk it I'm careless and I accept that about myself. I'm happier this way.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Midge, sorry to have missed your first post.....A BIG WELCOME to another Jersey girl..... your real close to me about 25 mins by rt 195, my biz partner lives in Howell. I used to have a few friends that lived there too but have since moved out of state.
Same with me since my 2nd pregnancy I can't get my rings on and REFUSE to get them sized up. I am determined to lose the last of this baby fat!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Midge and Welcome, Im sorry if I missed your entrance but I have been in a whirl-wind this past month so I hope you'll forgive me!
I'm glad you weren't shy and jumped right in...as you can see not many shy people here!! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm shy.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

and you just made me choke on my coffee too Victor!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You could have fooled me.

Exactly what Pirl said!
