Anyone else's spouse think they are bananas?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Good morning we add the grounds to kitchen composting, then it goes to the black bin outside.
I have heard coffee grounds are good for acid loving plants so the hydrangeas got some too.

Hmmmm....Spouse? It's sort of not legal yet, and I'm not one for labels. I've written about it before, Paul doesn't like to get his hands dirty, he is a germ-O-phobe! But, what I did this year, as I've mentioned in other posts, to get Paul's attention is to have him pick out colors for the purple and white garden I'm planning...that way, he will be atleast a little interested. It was so nice saying, "Here is Ensata Iris, look at all of the JI, and pick out which ones you want me to plant." "Here is Oakes DL's, pick out which ones you want." Y'all get the drift. He left me little post-it notes of what cultivars he liked. But, after using my entire Income Tax check, and then a large bonus I got from my previous job, he thinks I'm nuts, for sure! I think I'm heading to almost the 1k mark, maybe a little more, and that's not the dirt, more stone, and the trees I'm getting...lol. I just asked him if he thought that I was bananas, and he asked, "In what regard?"
That's my Paul...lol.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thom - certainly that can't include the hardscaping or the pots, the Miracle Gro, the bales of growing medium, etc., etc., etc. Paul must be a gem.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't even want to think how much $ went down the drain over the years making mistakes!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I agree. It's not something I dwell on or I'd be reluctant to try again.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Yeah, I try not to think about that either. Eek. DH told me once, It's not you buying plants that bothers me, it's when they die.

Ah well
pam

Money AGRHH - We seeded the lawn and heavy heavy rains came in and all the seeds even though we hayed it went into the wetlands!!!

Then just plain old stupid stupid mistakes. We moved in and one side of the house had all ferns and I pulled them up thinking they were wild weeds!!!!!!!! AGRHH.

He suspected I was crazy early on but found it exciting. He knew I was crazy when he married me but was looking for a challenge. Now that I've driven him mad...well, no problem.

LOL, Pam, what a guy! Paul too, Thom, and Jack, and all the rest of our goofy mates. Nuts, all of us. xx, Carrie

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

LOL...Pirl, so true...lol. I usually keep all of my plant tags in one centrally located place, usually a shoe box. I found one in my basement, it was from the first bed that I made...I'm looking through the plant tags, and I'm like, "What the h?" I'm gonna safely say about 1/5th of them are no more, or I didn't like, or they got eaten, melted, or I divided and gave away!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have a shoe box full of them. Afraid to go through them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

There are times when I almost wish I never labeled anything. The frustration level rises when I can barely read the faded labels I made! I'm glad I ordered 400 of those locking labels and 14 pens from the co-ops. Maybe, just maybe, it will help with keeping labels on the plants and not having them fade out.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too! I ordered 1000 plus the markers. I may use the paint markers on my head instead of strings on fingers.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The more I think about it the more I think I should have ordered 1,000.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Should last me a while!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I was new to labeling plants last year. First I used the plastic labels and a marker and most had faded by the middle of summer. Then I ordered metal ones and used a label maker with weather proof label tape. They came through the winter fine. Now I just have to see how they hold up in the summer sun. Eleanor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have many metal ones but the lawn guys kick and blow them over during the fall cleanup.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Try marking both sides of the label, Eleanor. I like mine to face north, if possible, but there are times it would look too strange to arrange them that way.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

People would think you're part of some pagan cult or something! Especially if the scarecrow also pointed north.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The scarecrow faces south so I'm spared the pagan cult possibilities. Going out at 6 AM to take photos in my silk pajamas probably has some neighbors eager to avoid me but that's fine with me.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Woo hoo! Pirl sleeps in silk!! signed ~flannellady

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I never said I slept in them.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm not touching that one, pirl!

My DH (like most men) likes to be admired . . . so he wasn't that keen about my gardens, until the neighbours started to admire them . . . although he moans about "all the work"

Gardening never struck me as work . . .effort - yes, but work is something you do for pay so you can enjoy yourself when you are not at work!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Checking in here and not entirely reading back. I always sleep in silk. DH LOVES to visit Victoria's Secret for me. Isn't that why he gets the catalogue (^:~)? I am still aiming for my prime you guys (only fifty eight here).

(Bre) Sellersville, PA(Zone 7a)

LOL> I can so relate with the labels and it would be nice if someone wanted to do another co-op with the labels and markers - I would have no idea how to do it but if someone wants to offer advice...just a thought ^_^

Bre - here's the company they got them from.

(Bre) Sellersville, PA(Zone 7a)

thanks!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're welcome!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Laurel - odd coincidence but mine are also from Victoria's Secret.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine too!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I never doubted it for an instant!

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

You should see Victor and his buddy Joe in pantyhose.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It didn't hurt the perception of either of them. Manly men don't have such worries.

My ex had to wear pantyhose on one leg when he had severe phlebitis. Awkward for him but it did help.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They always made me run faster.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

"run"

Ha!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

What was the name of this thread? lol so very appropriate...lol.

I just reread what you had typed earlier Arlene...lol...plant materials have well hit the 1k mark, the other stuff...I shudder to think about...lol.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm sure many people would be questioning the sanity of quite a few gardeners, Thom, but it does take substantial sums and a ton of time to make a garden what we want it to be. So much better that we spend it on what makes us happy than on things that aren't important to us.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's right. Who says kids must eat EVERY day anyway?!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

3x wk is pretty good.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And healthier. Also instills an appreciation of things.
