Anyone else's spouse think they are bananas?

To save money I hired a teenager to weed the perennial garden while I was in the studio.
He assured me he had worked for a gardner and knew what plants to leave.
He PULLED everything. Luckily I caught him in time and replanted.Jo Ann

Jo Ann - that is exactly why I havn't had my kids help me weed. I'd have a heart attack everytime they pulled up something "suspicious".
So I guess in order to do it right, I have to do it myself. Strange how most of the things around here are like that....
(and I'm not a control freak at all!)

Hey Deb. It comes with the territory. I am an "oldest child" and was borne with the extra large "responsability gene"

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey GE,
I'm the oldest of 4. When I was 13, Mom went to work and I became "mini-mom". I guess I'm just getting tired of it after so long....
:)

I had a golden reteriver (sp) once back in the 70's I think it was 75 or 76. Her name was Kippie and she was the 1st dog up here to have Parvovirus. She was pooping yellow red blood slime. The vet diagnoised it and he was over-whelmed. She was cured and lived long.

I found a lady bug in the laundry room and took it out to the GH. I should go take a pic if I can find her or him.

At the risk of having someone call Social Services, here are my boys (and one girl) enjoying a little snack of kibble.

Yuck!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

KIDS GO figure.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

The boy won't touch a tomato, but get him near some kitty kibble and he's all over it like white on rice. *sigh*

NOT, please note, that I make a habit out of feeding my child kitty kibble.

I think that's a great candidate for caption of the week on Saturdays. I would remain anonymous though!

I hope you don't mind me piping in - I don't live in the Northeast! This is a great thread. I've enjoyed reading every post!

And Phuggins' kibble picture had me LOL. It reminds me of the story my DH told me about growing up as an Army Brat - his parents were having a party with a lot of young officers and their wives, and they ran out of appetizers. (my DH's dad was an Army officer - and he followed in his dad's footsteps). My DH and his sister found a box of doggie treats and spread a crab dip on them and served the guests.

No one guessed they were eating dog biscuits! My DH says it was because they had been drinking Artillery Punch for several hours!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome Beth. Stop by anytime! Anyone remember the Honeymooners episode where Ralph made a great tasting appetizer that turned out to be dog food??

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

At the pet store they sell dog biscuits that look like frosted vanilla wafers and oreos. My daughter took them to school and fed her friends. Only one gagged, after eating it when she was told what it was. Another asked if she had any more.....and ate them with enjoyment. Go figure.

I LOVE the picture of the boy eating cat food. If it was dog food the dogs would have eaten it so fast he wouldn't have gotten a taste! Cats are fussy. Dogs will eat anything, except vegetables, unless they have butter on them. At least in my experience.

Here is the Queen....
sorry it's blurry, the kids took this pic,,,

All I know is I get it cheap as he gets it wholesale. He sets up gardeners with GH's and needs to make a buck but wants to keep us little guys in business also.

Seed Starter Called ABS GreenWorld Professional Seed and Plug. 3 Cubic feet. $16.50. At WW a small bag is $9.00.

For fertilizer I get Scott Peters Profession 20-20-20. I am not even sure if anyone can go out and buy it?

DH doesn't have a thing to do with the houseplants or gardening. He has admitted that he thinks it's beautiful. We've had many, many lawn mower casualties because of him. Each time he ruins a plant, he promises to replace it, so I feel better.

My son volunteers to garden, but usually, that just means digging holes to China anywhere he feels like it. He likes using the hand saw to cut tree branches into smaller, more manageable pieces. Well, he used my bypass pruners to cut a branch about 4" thick. He got the blades of the pruner so deeply wedged into the branch, that the handles broke off. I wasn't so happy about that one. I offer him 20 cents for every dandelion head he picks before it goes to seed. When I run out of dimes, I'll give him a raise to a quarter. It works!

Love the kitty kibble pic!!! My DB used to eat dog food when he was little. Every time the dog was fed he'd sit down at the bowl too...Mom would find him sneaking dog food in the early morning hours. Strange kid he was...well, actually, he's still a bit strange if you ask me!

I used to make homemade dog biscuits. They looked just like MilkBones without the logo on them. I made some for my (other) DB's dogs. When I dropped them off I grabbed one and ate it and he about flipped his lid. He started yelling, "Don't teach the kids that! They'll be eating dog bones all day in front of the neighbors!!!!" He didn't know they were homemade and made with all good stuff from my kitchen. They tasted awful though...kinda like extra-dry, extra-thick, extra-tasteless bran. I still can't figure out why the dogs go nuts over them.

Oh, and my dogs all get baby carrots for treats now...since the Vet said they are all too FAT. It really helps them drop the weight fast, wish it worked that way for me. Hmmm, maybe I should trade them my carrots for their homemade treats!

OK....this might seem like a dumb question (but here goes....):

what is a DH?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dear Husband, mostly.

(Bre) Sellersville, PA(Zone 7a)

Sofonisba - I love the dandelion idea! Might have to borrow that one~
My DH has NOTHING to do with the garden/ flowers/ houseplants/ veggies...
He just keeps his mouth shut and carries in the heavy stuff for me ^_^
I guess he figures that since I am keeping them alive and the neighbors always compliment on our landscape that he should just let me be~
LOL... and HE is the one who runs from the power tools - although he hasnt weed-wacked any of my plants yet..

Hey, pirl...I can just guess what else it might mean ;-)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Phuggins, I love that pic also. Kids are great...if it tastes good (to them) eat it! My nephew has a novel approach to eating anything he doesn't like. Try to force feed him something he doesn't want and he immediately vomits. Everyone has learned that when Nate says he doesn't want to eat it, we say OKAY, where's the dog, he'll eat it.

Pirl, you've made progress, my Jack still says "where will you plant it??" Silly men

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You have a Jack too, Weeze?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'm in from another day in the garden. You started without me again. Hi Beth. I'm new too and they get pretty wild here. I was warned to put on my seatbelt the first time I checked in here but no one mentioned whip lash. Prepare to ride the mechanical bull.

Victor, how can you remember that "Honeymooners" episode at your tender age? There's a credibility gap here. Remember when Lassie saved Farmer Jones burning barn? Sky King, "Out of the clear blue of the Western sky..."? Did you have a Winky Dink screen? Those were the bomb! My mother almost killed me when I crayoned a kiddie art project on the TV instead of the Winky Dink screen.

lmao - TV instead of the Winky Dink screen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The re-runs have been showing for years, Laurel. Watched them since I was a kid.

My Dear Darling Devoted Husband loves what I do with flowers, winter sowing and planning. He likes to help, but he helps is fits and starts. For instance, he'll go to Home Depot for potting soil and come back with 5 more Raspberry Wine monarda - each of which needs more space than we have, and he'll plant them all in the space one would take up right before you divide it. He likes to think he can help out with the heavy lifting, but he broke his back in 2005, and his chronic back pain is getting worse. Since I'm in a wheelchair, I can't really help either. We SHOULD just have our whole yard just gravel with a few potted agaves, but neither of us would like that. And we're too cheap - and he's too proud - to hire help. So we struggle along. But we think each other is wonderful, although I think he's a little chaotic. xx, Carrie

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Yes Victor, I have a Jack also, but he has declined to wear THE hat ^-^

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

jeez weez, you screwed up the smiley :~)

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Alison - sometimes DH means something else if he weed wacks your flowers, but we can't post it on DG!! Eleanor

another list:
DH=dear husband
DW=dear wife
DMIL=dear mother-in-law (or the other meaning if she is like mine)
and all of the other realtives you can think of
LOL-laughing out loud
JK=just kidding

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor is so good! He mentioned last year that coffee grounds seem to attract worms - WOW! I worked on the one garden (not big) that got the coffee grounds all winter and the area that got most of them definitely had the most worms.

Thank you, Victor!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're welcome, Pirl. Wish I had a Starbucks nearby. I'll have to ask Dunkin Donuts. Starbucks has a policy of giving the grounds to gardeners. It's a great all-around additive. I use it as a mulch. Good for JM's too.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We not only have a Starbucks a mile away but my granddaughter's boyfriend works there while GD works at the one nearer her home but these are all our own grounds that I've added.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was wondering how just the grounds from our home use would work quantity wise, I've been throwing mine in, but didn't know if it was enough, so, good to hear Pirl.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's all I use so far too. I keep them in a large jar.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'd post a photo but I don't have the courage. It looked awful to see that mound but it was all worth it.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Pirl. you could post it over on the Soil & Composting Forum, they're used to stuff like that.
xx, Carrie
