Water Cooler - 7

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't remember if you've before, but how did you end up making such a big move to Springfield, MA?? No teaching jobs available closer to BC?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Ah . . . well, my master's thesis was on fixed-term-contract work (read adjunct professors!). The key thing I learned was to get that tenure tracked job as soon as I graduated with the PhD. So that's what I did for 10 months - I simply focused on getting a tenure track job anywhere in the English speaking world. I applied all over the place, Swansea, Wales, Hong Kong, Australia, all over the US (well, not places where profs couldn't buy a single family home - so California was out).

My employer was the first to offer me a tenured position (it was a "it rains, it pours" situation - suddenly there were 3 other likely offers, but I went for the sure thing).

Canada does a great job educating people . . . but universities tend to be located in (1) very expenive cities like Vancouver or (2) areas the family would not move to - like Saskatchewan. Massachusetts seemed very exotic to us living on the West Coast, so we came to Springfield. DH even knew of the Springfield rifle, Indian Motorcycles, etc (I had never heard of either.

But, we had NO idea of how different Eastern US was from western Canada, and DD who does not like change, has not adjusted to the different culture. Like many Canadians, DD is very polite, but relative to Americans, is not very friendly, but is very reserved, even shy.

My sympathies for your daughter. But those are good problems for a parent to have with their kid. Eventually good for her too. Kids who are more mature often have a tough time during the immature years. Good for you!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Amen to that Dave.

I have Happy Feet. Got new sneakers today. Put up with crap for a year to break them in - it did not work, all thou I was determined. NOT. Come to find out the sole was a size bigger they put in the sneaker. So now I have my 2 year old ones for back up which are getting bad and will have to be on the world gunisses of records. Now I have happy feet 60 bucks later.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

So they were mislabeled? Did you get the new ones for free, I hope? MY feet would have taken two years to recover from an error like that - I would have probably had a wrongful death suit, or at least my heirs would...wrongful dead feet? Sherrie, I am very happy for your Happy Feet and I hope you are dancing! xx, Carrie

I am all about foot comfort. Traded in my Blahniks for Keds with no laces ($19.95 at DSW plus discount for coupon).

What are your favorite gardening shoes? I would love to find a slip on/off type. Does anyone think crocs are the answer?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I love crocs, I must have about 6 pairs. Just hose them off at the end of the day and they're ready for tomorrow.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I always use old leather sneakers.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Peeeeeuuuuuuuuu.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Haven't had any flowers wilt on me yet...

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

That was sooo cruel Sharon. Victor, if you have genes like me and my family, your sneaks could NEVER be odiferous.

"L" and proud of it

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Funny thing is - both my sons have really stinky feet! They don't get it from me.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Ahhhh, Victor doesn't care. He is used to it, and he can take it.

BUT, if you are really upset Victor, I can send you this pair of bright yellow crocs in a size 10, I think....since neither the cats nor I can wear them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, but I'll pass. Crocs don't look like they offer much protection nor support.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Not much support, but good for just weeding and playing around in the mulch or leaves.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I wear a 9 1/2 if they don't smell too bad send them to me (though red is my color). I'm not worried about protection :).

L

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

they've never been worn, Laurel. Got them for my daughter but she has rulers for feet and they flopped around all over her.

I'll send them to you if you will wear them.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Sharon, I'm DMailing for a trade if you serious.

Laurel

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Serious, Laurel.

Crocs rock.
i have 2 pair of the real (expensive) kind that i wear waaay too much. i have two old knock off pairs (Target and Payless) that i wear for gardening most of the time.
But last summer, when i realized all the spots on my feet were tan lines from the holes in my Crocs, i broke down and bought my 1st pair of flip flops. (i hate flip flops when people wear them like they were actual shoes. i can't believe they make "dressy" ones. Girls all dressed up looking like they forgot to put their shoes on after showering in the dorm.)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

The only shoes I can wear for anything (formal, gardening, church, whatever) are leather Keds. They must also be size EE width. Therefore, I have one pair in each color - one white and one black. Dull dull dull. I mean it would be nice to be able to wear something different occasionally.

And I, too, hate the way kids - including my own DAUGHTER - wear flip-flops as if they were actual shoes. I don't mind the leather ones with an arch and so forth, but the rubber ones that LOOK like they cost $0.99 (and probably do).

The judge in the JK Rowling trial said the terminology in the HP books is 'gibberish'!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm thinking they cost about 10 cents to make. Carrie, have you checked Zappos.com or shoemall.com for EE width?? I have to get a C width but size 6 1/2 most stores start at a 7 wide drives me insane. I'm thinking of starting my own wide width shoe company do they have cobbler courses at college?lol
I usually wear my Adidas soccer sandals.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i wear wide shoes too! i have so much trouble finding ones that fit. i am a size 7, but sometimes i need a double wide (?!?) and those start at about a size 9. As do drag shoes. sigh. i love me some heels!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I actually got so frustrated that I e-mailed Oprah, hoping to get me some free shoes like she did for a female basketball player who had just BIG feet.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i get the Speigel catalog, and i want like EVERY pair of shoes in it - and not ONE comes in a wide.

i want these so much - on sale for $24 online - and they come in PURPLE. i can't look anymore. It just depresses me.

How cute are they??? My foot went to a wide while I was pregnant with my son, at the time I had over 100 pairs of shoes, I had to get rid of almost all of them. I think I cried. I had a goal to get a heel and and flat in every color to go with every outfit I had.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Amy, I got those shoes for my daughter for Christmas in red...she loves them. She is also 5'10", so she towers in them.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

o stop.
i can never have shoes like that.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good for gardening.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Don't get me tarted on those shoes.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL, Laurel!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Hey, i tarted long ago.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

New Balance has wide shoes. I always got their canvas sneaker but they discontinued them. Too bad. But try them for wide or narrow feet.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Amy, the show must go on but you can only tart for so long. Then you have to top.

Back in Atlanta now. Oh why? Work maybe? Anyway, DH says he will compress my files. I said, "That sounds like fun!." Maybe I can upload some pics from Maypop and take more pics of Atlanta stuff the next few days.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Compress your files?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)
