Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sun just struggling to pass the horizon but it looks like a sunny day is about to begin. Cold, 22 degrees so I hope that improves a lot.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Beautiful morning. Out to walk my namesake before work.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

33 and sunny.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Now 40 degrees as it was yesterday morning. It got to 48 yesterday. Beautiful day. Boojum, my girls seem to be sleeping in today. ???

Out to do the things I didn't get done yesterday. Lily planting. I worked in the yard, but got sidetracked and instead cleaned up the burn pile. I took many wheel barrels of ash to a bed to top it off that has a lot of roses . I think those roses will love it. I transplanted a beach plum that I have been growing for several years, but it was too close to another. Then I cleaned out more leaves from a couple of beds. Someone, everyone, please remind me to rake out all the leaves before April next year. I left too many on the west side of the house and they are now making all the bulbs coming up look messy. Have a good one, all. Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

41 here now. The first thing I checked this morning was the Magnolia. These night time lows are maddening!

I did clean up 18 of the 23 hydrangeas yesterday so now I have to clean up the mess from cleaning up.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pirl, what kind of hydrangeas do you grow? How are the deer with them? Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Deer did nibble a bit on my oakleafs. Didn't bother my others. I spray them all though.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My favorites are the lacecaps but I also have Tardiva, Limelight and some of the old fashioned types. The deer seldom come onto our property and have never touched a hydrangea. They were seen munching on my neighbor's Pussy Willow yesterday morning.

Edited to say I just saw Victor's response and I don't spray.

It's in the mid to upper 30s right now on the way up to 59. Lots of sun forecast over the next few days.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

49.7 now and the forecast is great.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

52 and absolutely clear. Great for working outside. Did more cleanup, including in the pond. Now lowering the pond level again so I can try to seal it better. Will be out again after lunch with my little helper. At least until he starts complaining.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Pirl, i love hydrangeas! And you have so many, must have a big property! Clem

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Just a quick side note, seeing that Victor mentioned spraying. I picked up a bottle of Liquid Fence yesterday because someone finally decided to eat some of my tulip leaves this week. Man! I can see why that stuff keeps critters away - the smell is so repulsive!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I did a Tulip check today. The early "First" are still bloomin and everything else that is here in bulb form, from daffs. to crocus and late tulips and hyias are still blooming and not munched. I have sprayed with Liquid Fence for weeks since the first of March. In fact thats how I found the NE G forum. Love all you gardeners.
Jo Ann

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've been spraying in the back but just remembered they did eat some in the front two years ago. I'd rather be safe and spray them all.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Cool day today down here in Tropicsville....64 with 30 mph winds right now. We decided to take a little jaunt to our favorite antiques/collectibles spot, Arcadia. Many shops were closed since most of the southern transplants have gone back home. Hysterical scene in the local cafe where we decided to have lunch. The place was full and one waitress had all the tables to tend. When we finished our sandwiches, she said, "Zat your mess?" My NewEnglander husband got a really confused look on his face and his mouth was slightly in a hanging-open position, so I decided it would have to fall to me to seek clarification, given that I'm the native here. I said, "Excuse me?" She repeated the Zat your mess inquiry and I joined my DH in his look. I, at least, knew that this translated into "Is that your mess?" But since we are not at all messy (not one crumb had jumped from either of our plates onto the laminate table), I gave up. She then decided we were "ferners" so she said, "Didja just come in or are those your dishes?" I smiled and said, This is our mess and I think we aren't very memorable people." She returned the smile, but then went into a tirade about how she was working all the tables and didn't have any time to get to know faces. Ahhh. All's well that ends well. Glad we got that straightened out before we had to order again!

Thomaston, CT

It was 58 here today & I raked before heading off to art class --we are painting jonquils, but my pot dried up & died--so did everyone else's except for 1 smart cookie who kept her jonquils outside--duh--I guess no one was thinking! Since I was able to get a 1st wash on today, I don't really need them anymore, but I feel naked painting without the plant. Laurel, you mentioned U of Miami--I was a summer student there in '66--had a roomate from Texas who kept a bottle of vodka under her bed. Every night she'd ask if I wanted a swig, I'd say no, she'd take a swig & that was it! She also had a tank of hermit crabs --they got loose, & we never found them---watched where i put my feet for days!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They were probably looking for the vodka...

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I think you had my Winter roommate. She kept her vodka in the hood of her hairdryer. I was a fine arts student there (studio) in '67. Granville Fischer and Tony Scornavaca were mentoring. Did you know them?

Why would you ever leave the serious academic environs of New England to go to U of M?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

It is back to 38 degrees after having reached 48 today. Great day outside after doing an order to Big Dipper, never tried them before, but they had a nice list. DH and I did get 217 new lilies planted and we did get the end of the stream all rocked up again. It looks so much better, but I can't wait to have some ferns to plant. They are all ordered. I have had good return so far of all the plants that I had to move to put the stream in, but still early on some to tell.

Donniebrook, Zat is a good story. When are you "ferners" heading north?

Pirl, I have a love of the lacecaps, but I have been venturing into a few other. They are all very small, so no opinion on them yet. I also dearly love my Oak leaf ones, but the deer will eat every bud off them if they are not inside the deer fence here

Yes I do Patti. And the plant too!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

WC2, I saw my first bee today and my first swallow. But I couldn't find any hermit crabs, bet Victor has them and the bottle of Vodka too. Patti

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Oooo! Swallows are so cool! I saw bees last week but they weren't as active because it was still cold, they looked kind of confused! Like they came out at the right time but it isin't warm yet!

Yep, you know how Victor is, I don't think he's a boozer but the hermit crabs, well... ☺

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

getting late and getting cold- supposed to be the last real cold night here- 22 degrees- tomorrow warm. took a while to catch up after being gone for a few days- but i like hearing about everyone's moment in the day- here was one of mine- my little pond and stream have been 'turned on' and the fish are all fine!

Same temps predicted here, sarah. I have some Japanese hydrangeas-I think they are macrophyllas. They have small but abundant flowers. I have about 6 different hydrangeas here. Saw my first very small tulip open here today but it was closed up before I could shoot a pic. I finished raking under the monster willow tonight. I keept my eyes pealed for any tipsy hermit crabs.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sittin here with my cuppajoe. Good morning everyone.
70 here today and sunny. 34 now, a great day to garden.
Going to my favorit nursery to see whats growing.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

What's your favorite nursery JoAnn? I have one within a mile or so of home, and one across the street from my office.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I just rememberd Gro-More Farms and they are as close as Bristols which is where I was going, such a nice day and none of my nursery orders have arrived so I'll do both,
I want to go to Oriental Garden Supply on the Mendon Honeoye Road. His wife is a friend of mine and he has some great perennials besides Acers of everykind.
I am hoping the 20 year old Vibernum is ready to kick the bucket ,it's diseased and overgrown.I'll have Birchcrest come and take them out and design a new corner there with Acer palmayum beni kawa as the centerpiece.

It's really hard to work on these nice days, and I've been working more hours than normal the past 2 weeks. Hopefully today will be the last day until next week, and I can enjoy the spectacular days of sunshine ahead!!
