Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Daffy Time

They make geometric meatballs in Connecticut out of yews.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Green ice cubes.

All the little houses, all built of ticky-tacky...

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Little green tribbles here.

Or rivets... :)

I remember that picture from the "green meatballs" discussion in the Garden Design forum a while back. :)

We lost that account since then - they always cracked me up with the instructions that the site must 'look like a country club', yet they pruned the meatballs themselves, made mulch volcanoes and were to cheap to have us maintain the beds and had 4' thistles.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

A country club? *shudder* Makes me think of toxic monoculture lawn, ugh.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

That part is my job.LOL
I've seen that comment before - it almost always means they are trying to get more than what they are paying for.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

BTW what is a mulch volcano?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

That's when you bark around a tree and have the bark spread thin on the outside and very high in the middle - besides looking bad - it's bad for the tree.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's when people pile mulch high around trees. It's definitely not "a good thing".

Oh OK...I know what you mean.

Meatballs, volcanoes...what next?

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Oops posted below you, Al...just read the link...very interesting, thanks! :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've seen trees completely rotted out because of it. Also is inviting to bugs of all kinds.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow!
that took a lot of catching up. Forgot most of what I wanted to say too..
But I do want to say "nice houses, Gloria, Laurel & Pam!
Very nice pots Louise!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thank you, Dave! I'm tempted to start another pot here, but I've begun my "get things ready to abandon for awhile" strategy (thankfully lost about 4 pounds of sweat this morning in the heat!), so I should probably refrain for now. It gets addictive once I start one. LOL

Laurel - I loved your photos of MayPop! What a lovely place!

"Green meatballs".....LOL

Pam - I so agree with you on the McMansion aversion and the "just like every one" Country Club gated communities here. The McMansions also creep me out and the look-alike developments actually caused me to almost walk into someone else's home when we went to have dinner with my niece. We had been to her place in one of those Country Clubs once, and the second time, I thought I was walking into hers....but it wasn't ! Who could tell??? Good thing she walked out from her real place about that time!!! I love the character of the older homes, and small is ok with me at this time of life! Our house here is small, but I love it and it is so comfortable for the 2 of us!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh - please don't remind me of that, Louise. Over-development around here started about a year after we moved in. Totally ruined the area.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Victor, DonnieBrook and Dave. If it's not been in someone's curbside pickup, discarded by a friend, on the "FINAL CLEARANCE!!!" pallet, or found in the woods...it's not at Maypop.

I have now transmogrified into MaypopLaurel. Been transplanting creeping Jenny and running fence since we got here this afternoon (two Tylenol and a glass of wine please). Zinnias, cosmos, dill and French marigolds are reseeding. Half my 'maters are in and the greens garden is up and running. I know you folks don't do proper greens. I mean anyone can grow arugula and mesclun for God's sake! Red and green cabbages are looking so cute before the onslaught of worms. Snow peas are now about 5". Wisteria is in full bloom with dogwoods and redbuds. Now for the bad news. The temperatures are supposed to plunge and we are expecting snow showers in a day or so. The temperature in Atlanta has been close to 80 the last few days and the pollen count was over 3,000. DH had to blow the decks, drive and cars. Can't open windows because everything will turn yellow. Those who are allergic or asthmatic are advised to wear masks or stay indoors. We have had the highest pollen count in the country in recent years.

Mmm...green meatballs. Time to make spinach gnocchi. And speaking of green meatballs, why if we didn't have a shissel of green meatballs in Atlanta, more than a quarter of a million illegal immigrants would be out of work! Have a heart.

Dave sorry to hear about your friend. I was not reading all the posts. Can't give you a suggestion for Monday, but there's a lot of "Share The Cure" stuff out there. A portion of the sale goes to research. I own three pairs of socks with the pink ribbon logos and pink ribbon patterns. There are canvas carry-all bags as well. Makes nice gifts. I think you can order on line.

Laurel

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sounds great laurel. Let's see some pics! Actually, I grow arugula and mesclun for my own sake - tastes good! What greens do you grow?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Will do, but will not be able to post for a week as we do not have the technology here. We just recently got a computer connection.

I might need Roundup for the arugula. It's everywhere, in every stage, throughout the year. Because our cool season is so short, we spend just a few weeks planting cool season veggies and then move right on to tomatoes, beans, peas (Southern), peppers, eggplants, tomatillos. Our cool season harvest is only about four weeks on the more delicate stuff.

We grow cabbages, as mentioned, collards, kale, chard, mustard, turnips arugula, cilantro parsley and mixed lettuces. We have grown good spinach and all the choys, but I'm not doing any this year. We can only grow rutabagas in Fall and can't grow large heading lettuces as these take extended cool seasons. We can grow baby bibbs in Spring and "fast" lettuce. Black Seeded Simpson is typical here, but it is thin leaved and has no storage life. We also can't grow carrots and, although they taught the short types for here...forget it. Our soil is rich, but heavy clay. We are on a foothill=ancient mountain. Carrots have issues with clay and rocks.

We are cooler here than most of Georgia, because of the elevation, so I can grow things at Maypop that I can't grow in Atlanta. Only 85 miles away and Spring is two weeks behind Atlanta.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Impressive! How high are you?

Greensboro, AL

Well, ditto, Maypop. Exactly what we have here. It was 83 yesterday. Still hot today. We dodged all the tornadoes. But it is supposed to be freezing by Tuesday.

How can you get your greens growing?

And. You didn't even mention turnip greens. I s'pose you have been growing them all winter.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Well Victor, I'm not very high at all. I've only had two Tylenol and a glass of wine. Actually about 1600 feet.

BTW, let me know if you ever want to be my straight man (I could use a straight man).

Laurel

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually, I was expecting that. I purposely did not ask your elevation. Of course, you could have responded to that with your height.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Al, your picture of the "tribbles" made me laugh out loud! That is AWFUL. And Pirl's picture rally did look like a bunch of cushions, all piled up on the couch... (i forgot to watch this thread yesterday - see how behind i get?!
Did anyone ever answer Sherrie's question about tubers?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

The tribbles could definitely go to Dea's caption contest...

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'm a little under 5' 10". Used to be 5' 11', but think I'm going equatorial. Tall for my generation and spent my youth being called "Amazon".

Harper... I'm thinking of your "Harpo" slight. I have spent years introducing myself and it seems like forever people would ask, "Where's Hardy?". On the intro topic...I became so bored with events that required the question, "So, what do you do?" I started responding with, "About what?" This did not bode well for the wife of a Fortune 500 exec., but bless him, he got it and never minded.

Greensboro, AL

I had to answer questions in the hospital earlier this week. So i learned to say, well, I used to be . . ..

I used to be 5 ft 6. I always thought I was tall until I came to Greensboro, Alabama. There are a lot of women here over 6 ft.

And my mother used to tell me I had big feet. Here in Alabama they are a tiny size 8.

Amazon women!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Amazonic is a state of mind.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

is that like bionic?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Yep, that too, especially when you are almost 5'2".....and moving downward daily.

Greensboro, AL

If you keep shrinking pretty soon you will be only as tall as a lady bug!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

This is so sweet. I have many petite friends. We can always relate. Issues with stature go both ways. My daughter is only 5' 9" and is really upset that she didn't top me. I remind her that she is more zoftig.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Ladybugs are cute.

Inside I am 10 feet tall and bullet proof, leaping tall buildings in a single bound.....

Laurel, my sweet daughter is 5'10", and I can't go anywhere with her because I can't keep up with her.

I could keep up with Gloria.

Greensboro, AL

You mean you are a long leggedy 5 ft 2?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Sounds like a bug....
granddaddy long legs...
spiders...

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

I've heard that he best perfumes come in tiny bottles, and that is who I am hahaha! 5 3'! Do not mind, so all you GIANTS, appreciate the tiny people like me. LOL, Cemen

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Excuse me...I am not a GIANT. Just vertically endowed.

Regarding perfumes, I have Channels in rather large bottles. Depends on what your willing to pay ^ : ~.
