Morning y'all :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good morning Pam. I'm off to meet with the teachers this AM. See how much I have to beat my sons!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

You are bad Victor, glowing reports no doubt. I don't miss all that stuff.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh Gloria, your house is beautiful. Sorry about the spammers they sound like a bunch of Vi-anna weenies to me!

Good luck Victor. Remember to enjoy them while you can. Before you know it they will be old enough for you to change the locks.

Mornin' Pam. Thought we would be into the clay at Maypop, but DH had to report for jury duty in downtown Atlanta.

Gloria, DD is a grad student at George Washington University in architectural preservation and material culture. She works at the Smithsonian p/t and has a research grant from Peerless Rockville Historic Trust. Can you tell I'm proud?

Clemen, I really am Laurel of Maypop (occasionally). Like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Now I know that not everyone is a Red Sox fan or even likes baseball, but here is an email that I received this morning that can make anyone feel good.

On Disabilities Awareness Day, in a baseball stadium (Fenway Park Boston), on what I can only describe a perfect day, is an excellent example of the old saying 'It takes a Village'.

This man with autism, who was chosen to sing the national anthem, got a case of the giggles half way through.

Listen to what the crowd does to support him.

Just another reason why I love Boston and Red Sox Nation!

dogwalker - that was very touching.

On that Google page there are also 5, 6 and a spectacular 7 year old singing our National Anthem. I was crying with the beauty of their voices.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Soon after I joined I started making a list, typed it up, and keep it beside my computer. Now it's due for an update!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Pirl, I only watched the Dropkick Murphy's one - I love those guys!

Where can I find pics and infor on How To Cut A Tuber.

Gloria your house is beautiful! I am so sorry to hear about the scammers and all the court trouble you're going through. I feel like I want to take a trip to visit you, help you garden and offer my company.

Quoting:
Do you know who you really are and what you want out of this life?
I'm sure I don't know myself well yet. I'll get there.

Jack, my son and I are reading "Roots" on CD. It's unabridged. We've been listening for ages now. We're in Chapter 91 and there's still 8 more disks to go! It's a long book! I've had to renew at the library countless times.

Pam and Jo Ann, the craftsman style house is one of my all time favorites! I'll bet yours is beautiful. I have a boring 1 story 1960 ranch. Green eggs and ham was prefferable to me in my house. What's the tongue twister book Seuss wrote? The one I had to read overandoverandover was "The Little Engine That Could". After awhile, I'd paraphrase the entire book. He's 12 now and we still read together. Now we're reading "Peter and The Starcatchers" series. Dave Barry is hysterical. Nov. 20 is my dad's birthday, 'cept this year he'll be turning 77.

Louise, I LOVE your pots!!!! How can you say you're not artistic? These are fantastic! There's no copyright to the talavera designs, so knock off all you want with a free consience!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Nov. 20 must be a good day for birthdays.

Go Red Sox Nation!!! Aww, gotta love em. :) (I like the Dropkick Murphys too.)

Gloria, I'm so sorry to hear about the spammers/scammers. Shame on them!!!

Pam, I love the Craftsman....but you don't live there now???

Greensboro, AL

phuggins. Congratulations on being FIRST. Love your house.

Maypop. I know you must be so proud of your daughter's specialization in Architectural Specialization.

You know as a field archaeologist so often we stayed in old farm houses around the South. As soon as we left the houses were bulldozed. One in Aliceville Alabama was moved and turned into a restaurant. Strange to go to a restaurant at a place where i spent 4 years of my life!

So I felt driven to 'save a house' when I found one for sale practically next door to where I worked at another historic house here.

Unfortunately, it has just about been destroyed. Most people don't know that historic architecture needs TLC different from an ordinary house. For example, above all old houses need to breathe! Not be overinsulated as is popular in modern houses.

Anyhow, Miss Maypop, I hope your daughter gets a chance to save some of this country's amazing historic archictecture. It is disappearing at an alarming rate.

Sof. Im not up to visitors just yet. At least until I get a fully functioning bathroom. But I do appreciate the thought.

Pam - your house is very charming! Love that style!

Laurel - congrats on our daughter's accomplishments. My DSD is a preservation architect in Colorado......She does very well because it is a specialty niche and I think she was inspired by my DH's love of old homes when she was growing up. It is a very interesting field. I inherited a love of design from my architect father. I just love to sit and design homes for fun.....but mine are rough pencil drawings........no blue prints!! LOL

Harper - thank you! Good to know I'm not going to jail anytime soon!! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree completely, Gloria. Not so much on the functioning bathroom, but on the preservation. Same goes for statues, monuments, etc. We have a very poor sense of identity and history in this country. It's really too bad.

Love the house, Pam!

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

We were lucky to find our Craftsman...it's a very friendly house, if you know what I mean. And yes I do currently live there, along with DH, DS, and an embarassing number of cats. We were looking for an older house, preferably Craftsman or Victorian, and were willing to renovate--although as it turned out our house had been recently renovated and needed almost no work. I'm always amazed at the number of my friends that bought huge McMansions...the sort of house that doesn't seem to have a soul. They kind of creep me out, actually.

Although the house was beautiful, the yard wasn't that great...it had been landscaped with native plants at some point in the past, but had been let to ruin. Plus someone had planted green meatballs right next to the house. I've spent the past few years renovating the good stuff and ripping out the yucky things. (The green meatballs were the first to go.) So for better or worse, the landscaping (except for the mature trees in the background) is all mine. :) I've tried to design a Craftsman-compatible type garden, although I don't really stick slavishly to anything..."eclectic" is probably a kind term for it. :)

My sister is finishing her Phud in material culture and has helped me to learn about and appreciate "old stuff." I think you're right, Victor, a large portion of the population lacks a sense of identity and history--which I'm doing my bit to change. One old house (with traditional plants) at a time. :)

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Pam, is that house a kit house?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

More important, does Sears take back Craftsman houses if they break??

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Here are photos from the past year of Maypop, our Cleveland place, in the Appalachian foothills. It's an early 70's post and beam. We're Spring fed thanks to a deviner! I realize she's just a baby compared to some of your homes, but she was abandoned for years (except for the wildlife). We were falling through the rotten floors and getting rained on in bed. We did everything ourselves except the roof and HVAC.

You posted an email address, Laurel.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

I'm pretty sure it's not a kit house, although there are a few in town. I'm not sure just what the distinguishing characteristics are, or if you only know it's a kit house because of the documentation. I should probably go back and check my books...

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

God I'm so bad at computers Victor. I'm turning red!

What are green meatballs?

The 1950s house across the street just changed hands. it had no plants at all except for a boxwood hedge all the way across the front, right next to the house.

The first thing the new occupants did was dig up the boxwoods. Now there is only a grass lawn. it will be interesting if they plant anything.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Green meatballs are those evergreen hedges (often yews) planted 6 inches from the foundation and halfheartedly trimmed into spheres that seem to be Standard Issue for suburban housing.

Yep. that's what the new neighbors just yanked out.

All these months when the house was empty the real estate company sent someone nearly every week to trim those meat balls. I hope that guy was paid well and has lots more meat balls at other houses for sale!

Ugh!!!!!!!! I see that all the time and can't believe it. I call it the pillow look.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

OMG, now I know what green meatballs are. I kept thinking green viburnum, green rhodo...what???

Well now that I know....looks like my neighbors!!! And I won't let my yard guy cut down my gazillion violets yet.
