Plants I have for Newcastle Swap
I would love to trade a Hosta for a Lambs ear, but I cant be there, OOO miss out again. LOL
Have fun All.
Tilly, if you plan to be near my neighborhood, we can trade just about any weekend or evening.
I'm also interested in forysthia or witch hazel cuttings or plants. or anything that blooms this time of year or earlier.
Jacquie - I have a young forsythia from Arbor Day a couple of years ago - probably Lynnwood Gold. Do you want it?
Would love your forsythia!
In addition to what I listed above, I have red peony poppy seeds and many other plants. I'll have more to add to the list after potting up for the swap this weekend. What things are you interested in?
You know, I really have so much already. I'm really coming to the swap to eat, drink, meet you and see your garden and to catch up with others. :-) My yard, being in a clearing in the midst of a forest, is light, but very few spots with long hours of direct sun. So, basically anything that likes shade or part shade is where I'm (trying to) focus. So maybe one of your Milleum effusum?
And the forsythia is yours!!
whoohoo! You'll like the milleum, they are nice and bright in the shade and take no care at all. They'll reseed if you leave the seed pods which is what I did so I could have more.
I love the color - it really stands out and makes other things pop as well. Thanks!!
Jacquie,
I would love some of your grape hyacinths and bellis rosa. I will post a list early next week. I need to start dividing plants this weekend. Thanks, Rachel
you've got them rachel.
I am brining some cannas, colocasias, a few tropical vines, dtura, cleome, maybe a pride of barbados, if it looks better. Have done lots from seed and some are seedling size. Have afew other things that someone will know what it is. Anyone want a 8' devils club? I am also bringing one milk jug and a few other old things just to see if anyoone has an intrest in it. Of course food!!
Gordon, I'd love to try pride of barbados and cleome. Anything on my list interest you? Your "old things" sound interesting. On the other site, someone traded 3 rusty obelisks and is bringing some old garden implements too.
Both are just seedlings but you deserve a host gift so I will make sure you get one of each. I only got three seeds to germinate of the barbados, so you get one special one.
Wouldn't believe what I found at Lowes tonight. Ismene bulbs, crocosmia, and caladiums! Will bring some to trade. Potted the whole lot up.We are actually starting to get some of the tropicals up here, and at $4 for 4 tubers or bulbs, who can complain?
That's a great price! I've been buying shrubs lately as I need more height around the yard. The barbados will be part of that trend. Thanks!
I'll set aside an area to leave my trades and a free area as well for after the trades are over.
make it by my truck! lol
Gordon, by or "in" your truck....? =:0)
Gordon's truck is not for the faint hearted. Amorphophallus, Oplopanax horridum, Colocasia gigantea, Dracunculus vulgaris, and a few more, I am sure! Guard your children, or he will pawn off Colocasias to all willing victims.
And whats a Coreopsis after handling Amorphophallus? Yellow and Boring.
Orders will be taken, beds overturned in the middle of the night, "Where are you my spiny, my stinky, my obscene? I want you, NOW!!!"
Its a sad but true fact about Gordon, he is one heck of a guy, but so are most street dealers. Wonder what he will start bringing next? Meat Eaters? These won't be Sundews, baby. I said MEAT EATERS.
Rob
who really has better things to do, and an Amorphophallus coming to him, via NWG!.
Gordon - sounds as though the only thing missing is Heracleum mantegazziani...
You have that?
No, and so glad I don't!

I could grow that.Planted next to devils club it wouldn't get touched much!!
Did you check out the hairs on the stalk?
Formidable!...hope I never find it on my property...
Sounds like evil plant villains from some campy "B" movie!
OOOOOHHHH FINE!!!! But hogweed on an old pig farm? You got to love the link there!
Ah, I forgot that one. Its sad. I first heard of it in college:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyldvzp7CdY
And most recently from KC in a presentation about noxious weeds. Apparently someone had it growing in their front yard. Did Gordon ever live in King County?
OOH, I want a devil's club so bad!! I'm not kidding! I am trying to germinate seeds I got from a dg person in Alaska. Those are the coolest plants and they are native!! WWAahhh! I'm not coming to the party, but Rachel is bringing my plants up and she has her man truck! Could she bring me back a devil's club?
It all depends on if she brings thick leather palm gloves.
I have some huge ones in my yard. You want one that big? I mean 7-8' tall! Shoot, I thought I had a pic, got to get one for you, but it is big! They are just starting to leaf out. I think they are cooler than the other side of the pillow! I saw them at Molbaks for $25 for a foot tall plant. Now I have to bring a salmon berry up to be by the devils club.
If you want a huge devils club say the word and I'll dig one up and pitch it in the truck. Poor Rachel hasn't got a clue does she? lol
Okay, byebye cute little plant. There must be hundreds in one area about 40'x40'. I know it doesn't spread by roots this one I pulled off a log.
I'll see if some have came up from the roots on the Devils club. I wonder if it would propagate by root cuttings? I transplanted a big one early Feb. and it is budding out now. So I think its safe to say it will transplant. I doubt they are like brugs and could cut one down. They are nasty though! Caught some needles in the face and they swelled up and blistered. The only place it could have got me!
Got this from Wikipedia:
Devil's Club is very sensitive to human impact and does not reproduce quickly. The plants are slow growing and take many years to reach seed bearing maturity, and predominately exist in dense, moist, old growth conifer forests in the Pacific Northwest.
this from Rainyside.com
Propagation Methods: Sow seed when ripe. Seed may take up to 18 months to germinate. | Stem cuttings from horizontal branches in late spring to early summer. | Layering.
So cuttings from horizontal branches would suffice for me. I already have a flat of seed planted from this winter and I can wait for it to germinate. But cuttings would be awesome. I can root almost anything. Easier on Rachel's mantruck, too.
Hey Pix, how is Rachel doing?
I wish I had known I would have sent her a get well gift, She is such a sweetie. ^_^
I'm here and feeling much better! Had a yuckie stomach/intestinal virus, heck of a good way to start loosing weight! Gordon, I'm with Pixy I love Devil's Club! I would love to have small plant or cutting as well, the mantruck can handle anything. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday. Still getting my stuff together to bring. Gordon did I read that you will be bringing rust with you? I love rusty stuff as you can tell from seeing my yard! Hugs to all my PNW buddies, Rachel
Glad to have you back Rach, missed you. ^_^
Hey, Gordon, that cute little plant was $5 each at Portland Nursery last year. I've got it as well but it hasn't spread beyond one area. It really likes it moist. Pixy was close-- It is related to miner's lettuce and is edible. Claytonia Siberica, or Montia siberica, common names Siberian Candy Flower, or Spring Beauty. Can be considered weedy, but is very pretty in the woods. (Might look nice mixed in with Oxalis Oregana?) I thin mine down somewhat but leave discreet clumps of it and it's pretty. Maybe you can take some of it to the plant swap for folks who want natives?
Susy, this must be the year for it. I haven't noticed it in prior years, but my neighbor and I have noticed a lot of it in the last couple of months.
Thanks for the id!!
If people want some of the Claytonia let me know and I can bring a box full! I thrwe one on my holding bed, the pic, and it is growing nicely. And I mean threw it down, no hole, no water, just tossed it on the soil! It is a cute little guy!
