April Blooms

San Francisco, CA

Thanks! And I'm glad everyone is a good sport about it. I get fooled pretty much every year somewhere along the line. Last year a SF paper ran a story about an American family that went to Mexico and bought a hairless dog, that turned out to be a giant rat that attacked their baby. I bought it hook line and sinker, and was grossed out for days, before someone told me it was an April Fools joke. I guess it's an old urban legend, but I hadn't heard it before. I'm still grossed out by it, though!
There is a purple Hoya, that is not too different from 'Barney', but darker. An ex-DGer, Ms. Kitty, posted a great picture on epiforums recently:

That really is pretty!!! Will have to take a photo of mine out on the tree...I saw lots of blooms.

(Zone 1)

Eeeeew! We have neighbors who raise those hairless dogs, Chinese Cresteds ... no hair except a mowhak type, real long mane! Really different ... check out these photo's: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cedarfrost.com/Versaceprophoto2_small.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.cedarfrost.com/&h=104&w=130&sz=23&tbnid=8O4cn8OeQPgJ:&tbnh=104&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dchinese%2Bcrested%2Bdog&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image&cd=1

Oooh, that hoya Ms Kitty has is absolutely gorgeous! And, Purple! LOVE it! Ok, here I go writing down yet another hoya name for my wish list! LOL.

finally i've been able to get a picture clear enough of my H davidcummingii to post

here's H. fungii still loaded with clusters of open flowers

and H. multiflora. I couldn't get it in the pictures of any of the flowers but all of my hoyas are pouring nectar, not just dripping and you should have seen me walking around sticking my tongue to all of the open clusters of flowers to see what it tasted like!!! Interestingly enough I thought that the nectar of each flower tasted exactly as the flower smelled!

Awanda, here's the setup that I have my praetorii in right now. It's the plant in the middle. To the left is hypolasia,to the rear is Antone's clone of a mounted darwinii and to the right is Ted Greens darwinii

David- THAT is why I WANT a davidcummingii! Just love it!

OK Mark! I'm just now finding this thread and so I was fooled with the purple Hoya! I did follow you're link to the purple Hoya and I HAVE THAT ONE! It's just a baby- but I have it! Unless it's a certain cultivar of purpureo -fusca?

Awanda- I love the pratorii! I keep forgetting to put it on my want-list!

Carol- You know I'm jealous of the Archie! If I could just get my cutting to root?! And there you've shown a new one to intrigue me- blaster??? LOL

San Francisco, CA

Diane, that's a typical color for purpureo-fusca, though it can be paler or darker, depending on temps (I think).

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Woohoo!!! Looks like something finally worked out for me! I don't even remember the reason why I bought that one but I can tell you it wasn't becuase I knew it had purple blooms- 'cuz I would have remembered that! Wonder how long it'll take to bloom?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Nice set-up David.

Blessings,
Awanda

Diane, purpureo-fusca has a reputation for being stubborn, and getting leggy as it grows, but it seems to me it would be worth it to see those flowers.
Here is an old botanical illustration from Simone Merdon's site, that shows a slightly different coloration.

Unfortunately....the flash washes the color out...but it is a deep maroon.

The flash may wash the color out but that is still one Beautiful hoya. Oh, I ordered a cutting of that pubicalyx cv royal hawaiian purple from the DL order ... at least I think I did, hope I did! nicholsoniae is very pretty too ..

I love all the pictures of the beautiful blooms!!!! Thank you all for sharing.

I wanted to show my Cominsii. It is heart-shaped! One of the beautiful hoyas I got from Carol last year.

That's beautiful, Katie. I have a cominisii too, it has beautiful leaves, and is full of peduncles, but no blooms as of yet. Fragrant?
Just a thought, perhaps we could avoid mentioning where we bought our plants for a while. The main thing about this forum is enjoying our plants and talking about them. The shopping is fun, but aren't the Hoya the main thing, rather than where we bought them or how many we bought?

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate your diplomacy. - And I appreciate your honest - Well, I really appreciate that purple hoya above. I told my husband that we need to move to San Francisco.

Thanks,
Katie

I appreciate that purple Hoya too! I really wish there were a Hoya 'Barney'. It is possible- Hoya purpureofusca (pictured in the Epiforums site) which is dark purple and H. acuta (which is what the fake 'Barney' was before I colored it- it was white) are pretty closely related, so if somebody hybridized them you could possibly get a nice lavender. Someday!

Hoya kenejiana, which smells of mango, is golden yellow and fuzzy.

Just amazes me the different scents. Mango would be a nice one!

One of my several carnosa's has finally bloomed! This is the first ever Carnosa to bloom for me:-).

Wow, Awanda, those flowers look really white, almost like snow. Are they, or is it the light in the picture? I had thought that the carnosas had pink flowers. Very nice Awanda.

I am too jealous!! :)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sara that's the color of the flowas:-). I've seen Carnosa's in various colors. I am hoping some of the others will bloom too.

Blessings,
Awanda

Awanda, that is really nice. Very crisp and clean looking. The only carnosa that has bloomed for me is the crinkle leaf one, and I bought it that way. Then it promptly started to die. I don't grow that one anymore - three tries, three losses, I am struck out. Ha.

I would love to see your other carnosa flowers. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'm not good at taking pictures at all, usually they are dark, blurry, fuzzy and out of focus, but every so often I get one that isn't too bad. I thought i would post this one I just took - close up of H. krinkle 8 bloom:

Nice picture Lyn. Three stages of bloom, even though it's on three different peduncles.
markroy, beautiful bloom . I've added kenejiana to my list, which keeps getting longer and longer.
All the other blooms posted are beautiful. My multiflora finally bloomed with three peduncles. There were so many multiflora pics posted that I didn't post mine. I'm just enjoying them. I'm disapointed that there is no fragrance.
My carnosa 'hindu rope' has a peduncle. I know that one is fragrant because it blooms every year for me. Just the one peduncle though.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Imadigger! I wish the krinkle 8 was fragrant but it's a pretty bloom anyway, even without fragrance. I have a ds-70 with a few buds now too. The first time the ds-70 bloomed I did not like the scent at all but I guess it grew on me because last fall when it was blooming I kinda liked it. Will be curious to see if I still do this time! All of my hoyas are outside now so I'm going to have to remember to go out in the evening and take a sniff. ^_^

Here's the ds-70:

(Zone 1)

Oh, I forgot to ask. I have a small variegated hindu rope hoya that I got in trade last year. Hasn't bloomed yet, do you know if that one has fragrant blooms?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh Lin! That makes me anxious for my DS-70 to bloom! You said you didn't like the fragrance at first- what does it smell like?

(Zone 1)

Hi ya Diane: The first time this plant bloomed the only way I could describe it was kinda/sorta musty. It's wasn't the sweetest fragrance and I didn't like it at all. The next few times it bloomed it wasn't bad at all. I don't know if I got used to it or if the scent was actually different. When these blooms open I will try to figure out what it seems to smell like and let you know.

I moved all of my orchids out and hung them in a tree in the backyard last week and now all the hoyas are back outside, some hanging on my front porch area (east side of the house) and some on the covered deck (southwest side of the house). I will be moving the ones on the SW area and hanging them under a tree in the yard before long. It gets soo hot on the deck in the summer time and there's not much air circulation out there, so I figure I would try them in the trees during the heat of summer. A couple are hanging in part sun right now and I will need to move them to a shadier location in the next couple of weeks because the sun is getting a bit too intense at this time of year.

Carnegie, PA

When my DS-70 bloomed, I thought it smelled a lot like melted butter. I thought it was really pleasant. Beautiful plant :)
My Krimson Queen had a peduncle that started at the beginning of last month. Last night I went to check on it. I touched it and all the little buds and their stems fell off *sniff*. They were really about to open too. I don't know what I did wrong. Hopefully it will look deep within itself to try again for me.
I was really looking forward to posting pictures in this thread. I thought for sure I was going to be able to.
My Multiflora has a peduncle started on it so maybe I'll still have a bloom for this month. Great pics everyone!

Same happened to me last night on my callistophylla. Second time. But there are more buds. It was on a beam over a light and I wondered if it got too warm last night. I decided to move it. I was yearning to see it. Sigh.

San Francisco, CA

I thought DS-70 smelled like butter too- until I smelled the flowers of H. heuschkeliana, which smell just like melted butter. After that , the DS-70 always seemed sweeter to me, like caramel. Love them both!

(Zone 1)

Aha ... Caramel, now maybe that's what it was the ds-70 reminded me of! I don't think it was butter.

My Multiflora has two little peduncles on it ... two times last fall it blasted all the buds. I moved it to a different location inside the house (I was afraid to move it outside with the other plants, afraid it would blast on me again.) I am hoping to see some flowers this time. I'm trying to be very careful around it, give it space and hope it gifts me with those beautiful flowers which will be the first time since I've had it. I did take someone's advice (I think it was Hoya24) and sat it down inside one of those self-watering african violet pots ... seems to be doing 100%, so Thanks for that advice. It must like the constant moisture it gets from the AV pot.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Melted butter or caramel? Either one sounds good to me! LOL

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I get lots of multiflora blooms but I water it twice a week when the radiators are going a lot. So water it up. And good bright light which you must have lots of in FL but is a struggle here.

(Zone 1)

Yes, we have lots of light and humidity! Since I heard the multiflora likes lots of water I moved it to the self watering pot ... it seems to love it so far! It's in an east facing window and gets bright light all day. I just hope it doesn't blast the buds ... I'm talking nicely to it and hoping! ^_^

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Here is a new bloomer for me - H. hellwigiana IML 1101. Only the slightest hint of a sweet scent. Fast bloomer - six months from cutting to bloom.
