April Blooms

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

This is the same photo of cv. Christine that I posted in last months bloom thread. It is now 7 days after they first opened and they are still just as fresh as they were on day one.

Very Nice! Love that flower but love the foliage too! Is that a fragrant one? I know, I know ... seems like I just HAVE to ask that about every hoya photo I see posted, LOL. I just love them even more if they smell great!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Lin it is a fragrant one ,about the only hoya that i've had bloom so far that I cant detect any fragrance in is H. fungii.

(Zone 1)

Oh, that's good to know! I thought that I remembered someone saying most hoya's were not fragrant. But, I could very well be thinking about some other plant!.

I think I will add that one to my list for the fall DL order if it's available from DL.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Well here's my pratorii that opened up this morning. This bloom is from a different peduncle when it bloomed before. I have still another peduncle getting ready to bloom. This seems to be one happy hoya for me.

Blessings,
Awanda

David, very nice bloom - 7 days, wow. That makes it so much more rewarding than those measly two day bloomers.

Awanda, you are right, that hoya does seem to be very happy for you. Soooo fuzzy looking, I just want to touch them so much. Hee.

Nice blooms David and Awanda!

An exciting new bloomer for me! I received this as Hoya calycina 'Old Gold' from a friend in Thailand. The color of the corolla is not as bright as I thought it would be, but a beautiful shade of pale gold!

Wow, I'm in awe of all of these blooms! Thanks for sharing! villaluna

Awanda, PLEEEEZE tell me how to keep my praetorri buds from blasting!!!!! It has 2 peduncles which have produced at least 3 sets of buds each but they keep blasting and each time they do a new set develops right behind them.

I've moved the plant into a 50 gallon hex shaped aquarium with a glass top and artificial lighting so we'll see if it can hold some buds in there!

Sara i'm not much on those 2 day bloomers either but they're still pretty!!!

Ok David, first you need to send it to Arizona:-), if that's not possible then this is what you can do. Seriously, this is grown inside under plant lights, I water when it feels dry on the top. I do have it sitting on a humidity tray, not sure if that's what helps the flowas not blast or what. That's about all I do and it does the rest.

Awanda, do you grow many of your hoyas indoors? How do you display them? I know that you have a green house also, but did not realize that you grow inside your house too.

I am nearing maximum capacity now, but then I have thought that before, and still manage to squeeze in a couple more...I find it really helpful to see/hear how others grow their hoyas inside.

Thanks,
Sara

Another new one: a purple-flowered clone of H. acuta.

Wow ! That is just gorgeous color on that H. acuta !!! I absolutely love it.....
Where could one acquire that hoya from ?

San Francisco, CA

My Thai friend sent me this one as well, it is called Hoya 'Barney'. You know, he did send a lot of cuttings, anybody want one?

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

markroy68,
I'd love a cutting of the H. 'Barney', if you're serious in offering one to anybody wanting one.

Oh these are such beautiful flowers everyone. Mark, my mouth flew open when I saw that purple bloom. It's gorgeous. If you're serious about offering a cutting, I would LOVE one. I probably don't have anything to trade ya that you don't already have, but I would definitely pay postage.

Here are a few in bloom...got home late and couldn't get too many of them. Almost have to wear a respirator in the greenhouse.... H. rigida -

Mark is Hoya Barney a April fool's type hoya:-)???
Sara I have two grow light plants stands inside that I used for rooting and to grow my cuttings until they are large enough to go to the greenhouse. There are a couple that I grow inside year round, Pratorii is one.

Blessings,
Awanda

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Mark....that grapetinted H. acuta is beautiful....the drops of honey against the darker colors...beautiful!!!!!

Drats...with my climate it would probably bloom white for me. Purple is a really hard color to hold!!!!!

San Francisco, CA

Why, what do you mean, Awanda?
Coincidentally, another noid Hoya from my Thai friend just bloomed. I am not sure, but I suspect that this species is Hoya kittenioides, a Hoya that Christine Burton published in The Hoyan some years ago.
The interesting thing about this plant is that the corona (the center) of each bloom has been modified into a tiny kitten head. The kitten heads on my blooms are a little snarly, you can see, and will nip your fingers or nose if they get too close.
I hear that if you feed this Hoya with fish-emulsion the kitten heads will purr more.

Ok, well I feel stupid lol. I forgot it was April Fools day. I managed to make it through the day without any pranks being pulled on me. The kittenioides is cute lol.

Ha Ha Ha, you had me.... until I looked at the pic really up close !!!! Jokes on me..

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I'm confused. Were you offering the purple acuta cutting (OMG, I want one) or was that part of the April Fool's joke? (I'd love a plant with kitty heads)

(Zone 1)

Awanda: Love your H. pratorii ... that flower is awesome looking. Fuzzy and soft at the same time.

Markroy: Oh my goodness ... is that H. acuta bloom really that purple? It is beautiful. I had no idea any hoya had a purple flower! Really Gorgeous! I ordered a cutting of H. acuta from the DL order but not purple. Now, how cute is that April Fools Hoya with the kitten heads! We have four kitties so I just gotta love that picture!

Carol, your plants are wonderful! Every time I see a photo of archboldiana I am stunned at the size of those flowers! They are huge and so cool looking! I only have about a dozen hoya plants, all common ones, so all the flowers look pretty much alike. I love the bloom on "archie". (Some of these long names are so hard to type and get the spelling correct ... I keep having to go back and look to make sure it's right.) That H. rigida flowers are pretty too but Wow! Love the foliage on that one!

You guys can sure help enabling others to become addicted to these plants quickly with all your lovely photo's! I have a few cuttings coming before long from the DL order. I am hoping and praying I can root them without too much problem. I have rooted many other plants over the years and really want to be successful with the hoya. I am getting so limited on space with all the plants I have now (generic houseplants) ... sometimes I think I want to get rid of every other kind of plant and just grow hoya but just can't seem to do it. Someday it may happen though ... especially if I keep looking at all these wonderful and unique hoya photo's y'all post.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Awanda, I forgot to mention that I have bottom heat in the aquarium and I have a layer of pea gravel about 2 inches thick on the bottom inside to which I add a few cups of water just to help keep the humidity up,.

Not that i'll have to be doing that for much longer. I am totally dreading the day on which it will soon be getting humid around here. When you have to get up and go to work at 5:30am and the humidity is already at 85% and 79-80F outside, you know it's gonna be a bad day!!!!!

I guess if this new method i'm trying doesn't work for my praetorii i'll just have to keep trying different things something new until I can get it to hold some buds. I can't bring any live plants into my house because they wold look like I sent them through a shredder once Gizmo got done with them!!!!

Don't let that "now what is it that you think i've done now" look on his face fool you. If something gets knocked in the floor or goes missing,I usually know who did it!!!!

David,
Love the cat picture (being a cat lover myself) and is that the cat that was so sick a while ago? Looks healthy now. =^..^=

Dee

(Zone 1)

Oh, Gizmo is so cute! Now, just think of what it's like to have 4 knocking over plants, chewing on foliage etc! Well, actually only 2 of our 4 like "tasting" certain plants ... but they all have a habit of knocking pots and things all over when they decide to jump to a certain place. Of course, I am just as bad ... always knocking pots off my plant shelves and making a mess, sometimes having to totally repot. So, I guess I can't complain about the kitters too much! I do more damage than they do most of the time.

(Zone 1)

Oh, I just went outside and found a bloom! Just the common Krinkle 8 ... but I still got blooms! Yay!

Dee,he is the cat that almost went into kidney failure last year. I managed to get him to the vet just in time for them to get things in check before going into renal failure. So yes he is once again healthy and just as much into things now as he was before .

Nice plant Lin. I have 2 cats but Gizmo is the only one who likes to do things for attention. For instance I can be here in the computer room and not showing him any love and he'll go jump up on the counter and knock the TV remote into the floor simply because he can do it. I also have a tabletop fountain on my kitchen counter by the sink which has some river rocks in it. There are times when if i'm not showing Gizmo all the attention that he so thinks he deserves he'll go to the fountain and pull the rocks out onto the counter,

Hardly ever does he get on a counter top unless he feels the need to get my attention and then he will go and knock something in the floor and it's usually a stereo or tv remote,he's always been very careful not to break anything.

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Mark, I was gonna suggest that purple bloom looked too good to be true! Photoshop, anyone? You got me all excited there, though, for a second....and I feel like such a fool.

Julia

(Zone 1)

LOL David ... Ya gotta love em though! We miss having a dog in the family and hope to someday adopt another canine but for now it's the 4 cats (was 5 until one went to kitty heaven last year.)

Oh ... the joke is on me I guess ... so that purple flower is not really purple? LOL ... too good to be true? Well, it sure was a great job with the color enhancement! I wish some hoya scientist could get to hybridizing and cloning and come up with one that color! It sure would be fantastic, and even better if it had the sweet fragrance of grape juice! Aaah, it sure is a pretty picture!

San Francisco, CA

Oh, I'm sorry for getting anyone excited about the purple acuta, it was an April Fools joke, and so was the 'Old Gold' calycina. Just a set-up for Hoya 'Barney', which is exactly what I would name a purple Hoya if there were one that shade. I had to get someone else, as I was listening to Marketplace and was totally fooled by a fake story about the government sending out air-conditioners instead of tax rebate checks, to ensure consumer spending. Duh.
Yes, Photoshop I'm afraid.
I suppose I should apologize for the H. kittenioides as well- it's such a cheap shot, using cat pictures to get attention for one's self, but I couldn't resist!

(Zone 1)

:) hee hee ... See what a novice I am? I even missed the "Old Gold" calycina! Saw the photo and thought how pretty that hoya is too, but the purple one really caught my eye, and "Barney" should have cinched it for me, duh! No need to apologize, I thought it was all in fun! Best April Fools joke I've seen yet!

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

I was 'fooled', too. : ) After 27 years of teaching, I didn't think I'd be taken with another April Fool's joke. You pulled a good one, Mark.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

After 10 years of teaching I DID think I'd be taken in again, since that hasn't changed!! LOL!
