Nice pic, Sue. Happy Earthday Birthday, EVERYBODY!!!!! xxx, Carrie
Harper's Birthday - Part 5!
Harper, the crabby Valkyrie...
Harper is NEVER crabby.
But can she hit the high notes?
Of course.
I am wondering how Harper celebrated her Earth Day Birth Day.
Good one, Candyce!
I am sending along gifts of smiles and hugs to everyone that needs them today.
I'm heading off to the garden, finally, because "Nature heals". Nature has a big job to do today!
I'll be heading out, too, as soon as the little ones are napping. It's been a rough morning.
If nature heals, why do I leave the garden with so many aches & pains this time of year??
Tell me about it. Nature hurts!
I'm achy myself but working with plants is healing. It helps relieve the stress we sometimes feel.
Back aches and horrible allergy symptoms have made this a tough day.
Did you enjoy "the city" with the boys yesterday, Victor?
Yes, thanks. We had a great day - mainly Central Park. I'll post some shots when I get the chance.
Did you get to see the hawks, Victor? I saw the story on ABC news this evening.
No, I didn't Candyce. Lots of pigeons!
That's beautiful.
Not the pigeons. I meant your photo. We cross-posted. LOL
Great shots Victor. I was in the city with my son this Monday. I've got awful allergies too. Got a work deadline. Can't go out and garden. boo hoo!
Carrie, I can be VERY crabby!
I love that bridge. In fact, I love Central Park. It's such a fantastic park. So beautifuly designed.
More happy birthday wishes for Harper!!!!! Victor - beautiful pics of Central Park. I've never been there so it's a delight to see pics of the park. Eleanor
Great photos, as usual, Victor. The bride, with the cherry blossoms nearby, is wonderful.
That conjures up something I won't comment on! Hee hee. Thanks. I'll post some more when I can.
Happy Birthday, Harper! Brides are almost always beautiful, aren't they? ^_^
Lovely pics of THE CITY, Victor. Your boys are very lucky to have you as a Dad! I think you do really neat things with them. I love that bridge, by the way.
You guys know that Frederick Law Olmsted designed Central Park, right? At least that's what it says on the Boston web sites, LOL. I've been around it, parked next to it, driven in circles around it, but I don't think I've ever been inside it - definitely on my list, though.
He also designed the campus and arboretum at Smith College in Northhampton MA.. I met the horticulturist at Mt. Holyoke College. He said that although Mt. Holyoke claimed a connection to F.L.O., it was really more the son and protegees. He designed the Druid Hills neighborhood here in Atlanta. I am a huge Olmstead fan.
Laurel
Laurel - have you ever been to Bok Tower in Lake Placid, FL? It was done by Olmstead, and it is one of the most tranquil places in all the world. I love to go there.
Rah, rah, sis boom bah, gooooooo Olmsted!
Yeah, his sons etc. worked at his firm Fairsted (out of Brookline, MA, near where I grew up) until something like the 50s, is that possible? And Olm means Elm and Sted means place of so Olmsted means where the elm grows or something along those lines, so he had, naturally, a gorgeous elm growing at Fairsted, which was also his home. I don't know why but HIS elm didn't get Dutch elm disease when every other elm got it. So Arnold Arboretum (nearer where I live now) has been growing at least one if not several CLONES of Olmsted's elm to replace it when it grows out of its place or dies or in case of anything bad happening to it - I dunno, maybe elms live to be 300 years old and it's already 250, whatever, I just know they have cloned its replacement.
My research for my Olmsted article was REALLY interesting. It was going to be about Olmsted in general but there is just too much to say about him so I limited it to the Emerald Necklace in Boston, but as you can tell, I could go on all night, so I'll stop now.
C
I should clarify that the gardens - not the Tower itself - were done by Olmstead. My last post was somewhat misleading. Sorry.
I have been to Bok Tower, but so many years ago. I used to love to do an orchid trail schlepping from here to there. Have had a passion for the plants for most of my life. Very tranquil indeed. Some of the sink holes from mid-central FL, northward are amazing. I used to buy orchids from a grower with a sinkhole in his backyard. He would use the hole the way most of us toss compost. You could look down that black hole and see orchids blooming until it was black!
I saw a post regarding Alligator Alley. I used to travel across there. Before the days of cell phones and call boxes. We were licensed in FL at fifteen. Talk about scary...between blue crab mating season that could slice your tires up and the gators hangin' out on the warm road at midnight...life in your hands. If you were stuck out there it could be compared to a Steven King experience.
BTW, there was a story on the news about a lady in Pinellas who had a gator in her kitchen. Did you see it? My Dad's neighbor had a second gator in her garage in recent years. It made the news too. The home is on a lake and they travel over from nearby canals.
L
I did see that story about the gator coming into the kitchen through the screen door. Yikes - it was a really big 8' one, if I remember it correctly. I'm into Southern Hospitality and all, but yikes, what do you serve to that guy with his cuppa???? Jeez!
Do you serve his cuppa in a kiddie pool? Or is a hose container good enough?
