Spooks and ghosts and weeping ladies...oh my!

(Zone 7a)

I thought this would be a fun thread to start.

All of us at one time or another have had weird stuff happen to us. I saw a UFO once. I also wake to the sound of the doorbell or someone knocking and no one is there. It doesn't happen often but, boy, when it does... Once, I was rudely wakened by the sound of gunfire. POP, POP-POP!!! I was in a "dead" sleep (I had to add the pun, sorry.) and was supposed to be up for a Dr. appoinment. My alarm didn't do off and my brain used that as a back-up, I guess. I've also heard what my daughter called Bigfoot. I don't know. Maybe...

Who's had wacky things happen to them? Use this as a place to unload that weird thing or something spooky to get it off your chest so to speak.

Enjoy!

(Zone 7a)

I see you looking. Maybe it's the ghost.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Yep, I be your ghost! :oP

May Princess Kathy not see spooky ghosts! LOL

Glenview, IL

Yep... One night I was reading at my kitchen table. It was dark out side and I had the windows open just a crack. All of the sudden I hear this lady weeping.
At first I thought it was my neighbor, so i hollered out the window Are you ok? No answer and weeping stops. So continue reading, about 5 minutes later she starts again and this time sounded like she was right outside...So I look out the window and say Hey who is that? Whats the matter? Nothing again. So I try to see better, don't see anyone. Now, I get up and walk to DD room...it's right next to kitchen. I aks if she was crying about something she said no, I keep pressing she could talk to me told her i heard crying, she said she didn't but suggested it was our ghost! So I go back and read some more again the weeping woman starts up. I finally grab a flashlight and go outside. No one around! This went on for a couple of nights...Haven't heard anything since/Not long after that we had a really big issue so sometimes i wonder if she was warning me.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Spooky huh?

My friend was excited to move out of her parents home and into her first apartment. We found her a cute little 1 bedroom place that was actually a converted 2 car garage. The place was only about 5 years old and they had done an amazing job making it cozy and inviting. This was in Bakersfield, CA.

On her third night there we kept hearing a radio playing oldies from the 40's coming from the heat vent in the ceiling. Odd, there was nothing up there. Then we noticed that you could only hear it if you sat on the right end of the sofa. We spent most of the night trying to find the source but as soon as we moved from that one spot the sound faded away.

This went on from Nov 20th to Dec. 7th. The radio broadcasts were interesting to listen too because they were all "live" broadcasts from Pearl Harbor November/December of 1941. We thought someone must have had them on a recording but the source was impossible to locate. There were no other homes or apartments other than the owners place which was set several hundred feet from the converted garage unit. The sound simply seemed to come from nowhere.

The broadcasts stopped at 7:55 a.m. on December 7, 1976 with the sound of static and then nothing was heard until November 20, 1977 when the entire series of broadcasts began again.

We live in the middle of Spotyslvania county. One of the bloodiest site of the Civil War. There is the remains of a trench that runs along side our property and one of the areas across the road is still covered in trees. Early in the mornings in the spring, I can hear cannon and gun fire coming from that area. Gun's wouldn't be a big deal, we have neighbor's that target shoot, but not with those kinds of guns and especially not cannon. Pretty startling. Lots of those kind of stories around this area.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

goosebumps........................I can't compare to the last three.
I read a really interesting book called Spook by Mary Roach that delves into various attempts to confirm the afterlife. (its also very funny along the way and very interesting)
She mentioned being up late reading once or more times, when her husband woke from sleep convinced he heard knocking on the door. She was awake and sure there was no knocking. Now that comforts me about the three or four times I was sure I was woken up by a knock or doorbell in the middle of the night. But Seedtosser, I would NOT go check!!! My weenie nature is showing now! Makes me glad to have my big bad german shepard.

Glenview, IL

Wow, that is so interesting about the radio broacast!
Does your friends still live there? Does it still happen each year.

Doccat, I have heard stories like your on television. Never heard anyone tell that they heard until you! very eerie.

Sally, LOL...Picture the Ghost and Mr Chicken. Thats me i was shaking so bad, Can't beleive i went looking either but it was driving me bonkers. And i would probably drop dead if i "did" see a ghost!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Seedtosser1, She lived there for 5 years and the broadcast was heard each year during the same times. The second -fifth years we had parties during the broadcasts and sat in a tight circle on the floor listening to it. It was not scary but it was one of those never explained phenomenoms that was heard and investigated by over 80 people while she lived there.

Being a skeptic, I still believe that there is a rational explanation that we missed somehow.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I am awakened fairly often by the sound of the door bell..I don't usually go and check the door, but the other day it rang twice, I checked that time, and no one was there..
Another time, some years ago, a woman I knew was very ill and one day when I was sleeping (I worked nights) I dreamed about her, vividly dreamed about her, and I woke up in tears..only to have DH come and knock on the door...he said, "I have something to tell you" I interrupted him to say, "I know, Georgia died, she just came to tell me good bye" It still makes me cry,,,she was a dear woman.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

more goosebumps--if hubby doesn't get home soon, the dog is sleeping with me tonight!
Zanymuse- you would really enjoy Spook

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

sallyg, I'll have to check it out!

melvatoo, As a child I too dreamed of people saying goodbye only to discover upon waking that they had passed away during the night. I remember 4 separate occasions.

Each involved family friends of my parents which lived in different areas from us. I would wake up and ask my folks if we were going to the funeral before they got the call telling them about the deaths and none of these people were ill that they knew of so it wasn't expected.

It got to the point that if I recognized anyone in a dream I would wake myself up because I didn't want them to die and thought my dreams would kill them. Silly huh! But I was just a kid and it was probably all a coincidence.

(Zone 7a)

11:42pm on a very dark night, (some would say Dyson Dark), is NOT the time to be reading these! LOL Eek! Now I can hear someone talking but I think it's DH. He sometimes does that in his sleep.

I wonder if the radio broadcasts were coming from a station and being caught by the metal in the vent.

Keep 'em coming, folks. I love a good chill!!!

One of my favorite movie lines is from Pirates of the Caribbean..."You don't believe in ghost stories, Miss Turner? You're in one..."

Now I'm going to read my Stephen King book and then TRY to sleep.

Steven King is always a good bedtime read...

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

You 2 are braver women than moi. I only read Steven King, in the day time with the doors and windows locked. And am really glad I don't have his nightmares..........whew!!
The local paper usually does a write up on all the haunted houses, etc around here around Halloween. It's always interesting and their always something new. Supposedly there's a new haunt at the Rising Sun Tavern in downtown. Now whether that's true or a publicity stunt, who knows, but it's always interesting.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

My daughter had a nightmare one night about her uncle, my husband's brother, being hurt and dying. That morning we got a frantic call from my mother-in-law saying she too had a nightmare about her son. We called his house in Atlanta to see what mom and daughter were worried about. Sure enough he sounded really out of it on the phone. From Illinois, we called the police in Atlanta and asked them to please check up on him, something was terribly wrong. The police found him lying on the floor. Come to find out, the night before he was hit in the head by a drunk with a full beer bottle. His brain was swelling and he had a huge blood clot in his head. He spent weeks in Emery hospital and then many months in a Michigan rehab center learning to talk again. To this day he has to take Dilantin (sp?) to keep from having seizures. God only knows what would have happened to him if we had passed off their nightmares as just "bad dreams". He lived alone and probably would have died and no one would have missed him for days.

(Zone 7a)

Wow, Passtime. I believe we shouldn't pass things off as 'bad dreams', too. I've never had one of those and I hope I never do.

Where T go? ☺

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Pastime, I can believe it. Kinda creepy, but it happens. I do remember one occasion when my oldest was just a little guy. We'd been to the mall and I was headed out the door to the car. I heard my mother's voice, very clearly, say "Catherine Ann, take the baby back inside, now! Someone's in your car!" You guys know that Mom voice, the one when you know you're in deep s---t! So I turned around, found a security officer and told him I thought I had seen someone messing around my car. I'm thinking I can't tell him the truth, they'll haul me of in a nice white jacket. There was in fact a dude in the back seat, they grabbed him and come to find out he had a history as a sex offender. We had an older car and he had jimmied the lock. Too creepy for words, considering my mother had been dead for over 20 years. It always bothered me she didn't get to see my children, but I think maybe she had. :)

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

That's amazing. Your mother is watching over you.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Hopefully, she ain't watching too close, I'll be spitting soap for sure!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

doccat- how fascinating. and horrible--so incredibly glad she warned you.

I always believed in guardian angels, as a kid, but never had one talk to me. I thought it would be sooooo boring to go to heaven and do nothing all day but ...what! ? So I thought they watched over loved ones as a hobby!! And I sure hoped they'd avert ther eyes at certain times........

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Spooky stories, indeed. Good thing for your brother, pastime, that you and your family paid attention to those dreams!

Quoting:
The broadcasts stopped at 7:55 a.m. on December 7, 1976

Are you aware that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor early in the morning of December 7, 1941?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I still believe in guardian angels. My life has quite literally been saved on at leat 4 occasions that I know of--twice as a child and twice as an adult. If you are a Christian you may be aware of Psalm 91 which says, in part: "For He has given His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways."

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

marsue, yep, I don't know where the broadcast came from originally but it stopped sometime during the bombings.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

wow, I have quite a few stories but the one that really gave me the chills:

back when my son was just a lil tyke (about 2yo) He was laying on my bed trying to NOT to go to sleep. He was fussing and carrying on, and I got really frustrated and left the room but kept the door open a crack. I went pacing around my house to calm down so I could go back in and get him to go to sleep... When I got back to the door, I heard him giggling! I peeked in thinking that he was into something he shouldnt be.... and there he was, still laying on my bed and throwing his arms up in the air, he was simulating throwing an imaginary ball (my son alsways loved playing with a ball). He kept throwing and giggling and catching and throwing...etc. I watched him for a few minutes, then, I opened the door and asked him what he was doing...He said..

"Oh Momma!.... see the pretty lady? ....I play ball!"....
Then he looked back up toward the ceiling, looked at me and said "Momma, where'd the pretty lady go? she took my ball!"

I was so wierded out that he slept with me every night for a while.

Okay, here is the kicker..... a few weeks later, I ws unpacking some stuff from our old house and came across a picture of my grandmother. My son pointed at the picture and said "Pretty lady, play ball!"
My grandmother died 10 yrs before my son was born!!

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

These stories give me the shivers. My family only have weird dreams that come true. I cringe when my daughter tells me she had a weird dream. I know parts of it will come true.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

You have Irish folk in your history? Famous for having that kind of ability, ya know. My granddaddy use to "witch" water for wells in Nebraska. And that takes some doing.

(Zone 7a)

We have some Irish in us. We've all been able to know when the phone is going to ring or if someone was just about to call us and we call them first.

These are kind of creepy but comforting, too.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

As a kid, I had a dream that we were going to be in an accident, I told my older sister, and threw a fit when they tried to get me in the car. I was about 12 yo. We drove off a cliff that afternoon, 180 feet down! Now, everyone in my family asks me about my dreams :o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Wow! You're lucky to be here. That ain't creepy, it's scary!!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

:o) my best friend is just as bad. When we were teens, we talked about wanting to move into a beautiful victorian house a couple of miles from our home (we dont have many victorians in our area). One night I had a dream that it burned down, My friend called and said SHE had a dream that 'our' house burned down....that afternoon, we found out that the house DID burn down! She says my dreams are contagious! :-O Better watch out ! LOL!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

About a foot, I piled on the good stuff. :) Now their level with the bed and I need to get out and do some more newspaper, the dam quack grass is at it again. How I hate that stuff!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Totally creepy thread.
I have never had a weird.dream come true thank heavens-like when Jose Canseco was my boyfriend, but he actually played football and was a really nice guy........

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

My bad! Toooooo many threads open at the same time............LOL Bed time for doc!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Lol! dont have any dreams about quack grass and flat beds doc! :o)

(Zone 7a)

It's too funny to comment on now. I'm tired, too! LOL

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Good stories here. Love to hear them. Do I believe? Not really, but I keep an open mind.

We went to Gatlinburg last fall and went on the walking Ghost tour. If you ever go there, miss that one, it is a total rip off.

The only wierd story I have is when my son was little. I got up one morning and saw the door was open on the cabinate where I kept the asprin. (high shelf)
The bottle was open and the lid was off.

I went into my son's bedroom and he was sleeping and there was white powder around his mouth.
I woke him and asked him what he did.
He told me a story about waking up and seeing a bright light. He felt really sick and the bright light "told" him to follow it.
So he followed the light. He said it was hard, because he was so sick.
The light then told him to eat the pills and he went back to bed. There was no ill effects and he was not sick in the morning.
Let me tell you. I locked the medicine after that.
Still it was creepy.

Glenview, IL

Wow, incredible stories to read.

I think dreams, sounds and sight are really imortant to listen to. I am glad some of you did.

Kind of eerie, but I think our family members and friends do watch out for us. Good to have them too.

Keep telling your story, Very interesting!

(Zone 7a)

Yes, keep them coming! A chill and a thrill keeps the blood going and the mind open.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is a good thread Celia
