Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Spring Ahead!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Looks like a wonderful day for you Louise. I've always wanted to get to Sanibel & never have

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Well, come on down, Dave! You'd love it. It has been a favorite place of mine all my life. This year we have noticed that there aren't as many people at Sanibel or on the beaches here as in years past. I think the economy is making it difficult for people to take vacations. Gas is pretty high here, and I don't look forward to the gas cost to return to New England! Here is a shot of the beach today at Bonita Springs. The wind made it very cold, but it was still a great place to visit for a short walk!

Amy - I hope you begin to feel better soon! You are probably working too hard to give your body enough rest. It is so hard to rebound from illness when you are working, and what can you do? I remember it well! Wishing you well!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

For anyone who might not believe frost heave really happens, check this out. Of course when i planted it, I did so with the top at ground level. Did it late in the fall and did not have a chance to mulch.

Oh, My, Victor! How interesting! When I first moved to New England many years ago, I had no clue what the signs saying "Frost Heave" meant.....I mean, after all, when you grow up in south Florida, you just don't have that happen! But once I felt the car bottom out after hitting a frost heave, I sort of caught on to the concept slowly! My son and I would drive along trying to imagine what that could possibly mean.....very funny at the time!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I remember 'way back when I was a youngster, and my little sister had just begun to read, she read "Frost Heavies"!

I has the flu, too, and it's still going back and forth between the family members. I'm hoping to opt out on having it a second time around.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hey, Candyce!! So sorry to hear about your being sick with the flu - AND that it's bouncing around your household. That can't be much fun with the little ones! I do hope you are all in tip top shape very soon!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Louise.
I get better every day.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Fortunately, i am not working right now - not till Monday - so i can lay around the house and feel miserable.
Apparently a lot of Eric's students are sick too and now he is feeling bad also. yuck.

Maybe frost heave is part of what is going on in my yard too - i thought it was animals making the hills and dales.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Flu, Amy?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i dunno. i have yucky cold symptoms and i'm definitely feverish.
For yesterday's student matinee of Anything Goes, Reno's understudy went on (book in hand) because the girl who plays her was too sick. She went on last night though...

New York & Terrell, TX(Zone 8b)

thyme?? Oh no .... I planted all other herbs except that one .... gad ... um... gasp!

Is a godwit, anything like a nitwit, I know a few of them, and they are not rare...lol.

Snow. IT's *bleeping* snowing out. oye.

This is the worst transition, weather wise, in this area right now. My sinus go crazy, I get headaches, and start really getting cabin fever...yuck.

I worked last night, so my 8.5 hour shift was only 7.5 hours...lol...yippee

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thom, that is funny!
What happens in the Fall? Do you get paid 9.5 or do you have to eat the extra hour?

(Zone 4a)

Hem I know what you mean about this time of year.....honestly I think I have gotten a bit of depression - not sure if it is due to the weather or my personal problems getting the better of me. Anyhow I have been in such a funk lately....I am hoping it is just winter blues...I hope the daylight savings helps things along!!!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Dave, usually/typically in the nursing home/hospital business...spring ahead, you get paid for the 8, but work the 7...and the fall ahead, you work the 8, err, 9, and get paid an hour of OT...lol.

NOW...sun is out, snow is gone...windy as anything. This weather is about as confused as I am, when I first open up my Oakes catalog...lol.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Thom, way back when I worked the night shift we got paid 8 hours when we worked 7, but didn't get paid the extra hour when we worked 9 hours. They figured it worked out at the end of the year. Now, I think the dept. of labor would make sure the 9 hours would be paid.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thom spends 8 hours of pay on plants for every 7 hours he works anyway!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Funny, Thom!! The nitwits were those of us gawking at the godwit in gale winds! LOL

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have crocus blooming! Yeah - except they are really little and I can hardly see them. :( The best thing is that I went to reuse a pot that I had put a Fig cutting in and figured it just died - and there is a tiny green leaf! That is soooo great! I love spring! Happy spring, everyone!

Greensboro, AL

Happy Spring to you, AYC.

My chives just froze off and either went under or kicked the bucket.

1 inch of ice in the outside water containers.

We do have daffodils but the rest of Spring went somewhere else.

Congrats on the fig. They are persistent little fellows.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Is it spring in Bridgeport already??! Congrats, Cat. We still have about ten days to go here. Hee hee.

Greensboro, AL

One time we had snow in April. I mean the kind of snow that piles up and is several feet deep. I walked to work. The snow was above my knees. No snowshoes which is what I would have used back home.

The old folks here (the natives even older than me) will tell you, don't plant out until after Easter.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Gloria - but Easter can be early like this year - March 23.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi Gloria ...
the natives here don't trust Mother Nature until Memorial Day.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Gloria, you said "My chives just froze off and either went under or kicked the bucket." Is that like freezing your butt off?

Don't worry, chives are perennial. I've had mine for a good ten years and still going strong!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Me too, chives freeze, get buried under Oh say....5 ft of snow and come back every year.
Candyce, im with you , Memorial Day or later.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I wait until after the last full moon in May, then run around and cover everything if we get a frost.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are you a 'garden by the moon' person?

Greensboro, AL

My dogs howl when there is a full moon.

Once I went to a place at Virginia City, Nev. (above Reno) Me and some other people decided to stay up all night and watch the full moon over the desert. Actually over Boot Hill. If you've ever seen Re=runs of the TV serial Ponderosa, of Hoss, Little Jo. and the boys, you know exac tly where I am talking a bout.

The next day some locals told us some people have disappeared never to be seen again by doing what we were doing. Virginia City's Boot Hill is constructed over old silver mines. You can fall through to an old mine shaft and never be seen again. Not even any time to yell.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's interesting. They wouldn't hear you howl either, I assume.

Greensboro, AL

I know if my trusty dog Roscoe was there he would find me. He would dig to China . . . and fill his pockets full of silver while he was at it.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I read it's usually coldest when there is a full moon, so wait until after that and hope it stays above freezing.
Gloria, glad you have a trusty and smart dog!

New York & Terrell, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm with you, Candyce Memorial Day or later. Sometimes not till June 15th!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Have you ever done an experiment, Robin, and planted things at the 'worst' time vs. the 'best' and compared the results?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Robin, I too think there is a lot to be said about planting by the moon phases. I've done that for awhile and though I'm not a fanatic about it, I do consult the lunar calendar before I plant the various veggie crops in my NH garden.....leafy tops crops vs. root crops, etc. Once you read up on it, it seems like common sense to me, given what we know about gravity, etc.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Hi guys, I have missed all the fun with you, and think I am back among the living now, but as DB can tell you, it was debatable for awhile. Anyway, nice to "see" you all again.
I hate to interrupt the lunar discussion but I have to tell you this weird thing that is happening to my cat. Gloria's mention of Roscoe started the thoughts rolling...
Jazz is a rescue cat, not a year old yet. He is a huge lion of a cat, and is so happy that I rescued him that he is wherever I am at all times. Anyway, part of the crazy crud effects of last week was vertigo....had to hold on to walls to walk from one place to another. It wasn't terribly bad, but was aggravating. Jazz walks beside me whenever I go from one place to another in the house....he has always done that unless we are in the open area and he can see where I am easily. During one of the vertigo times, I didn't stop soon enough and walked face first into the closet at the end of the hall. No damage to me or to the wall, but I did crash. Since that time, when I walk down the hall, and get to the end, Jazz plants his huge body across the front of my legs and stops until I turn to go into a room. This is not the only place. When I walk from another room to the fridge, Jazz plants himself across my legs to stop me....keeps me from crashing into the fridge or whatever is in front of me.
It is a little annoying since I no longer have the vertigo thing....but what on earth has possessed this cat? I have seen Seeing Eye dogs do this...but an untrained cat? Geesh.
I though AYC might have some insight....this is the weirdest thing that has ever happened with any animal of mine. I have my own self appointed Help Cat. Dogs will do these things, but cats? And yell, if Jazz doesn't see me leave the room.....he will yell till I answer him, not a meow but a yell.

OK, I need to go to the Pets Forum maybe, but Jazz and I don't need analysis yet, I just thought it fit right up there with the phases of the moon and Roscoe's pockets full of silver.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming........
By the way, my Aunt Bett swore by lunar phases, and she wasn't wrong about much, I'll tell you.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - how cool is that, Sharon?! That's how strong the bond is! Amazing! But now you have to watch he doesn't trip you. Let us know if anyone comes up with any ideas in Pets.

Glad you're feeling better!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Nope, not taking it to Pets. Just here. Y'all can figure it out and let me know.

Thanks, Victor....nice to be awake for a change.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)
