Hi all, I was just scrolling thru and...who's going on the alaska cruise?! I went the last two years... it was a blast! dmail me and I'll give ya my 2 cents....

also, someone mentioned 0*... does the temp really drop that low in Port Angeles? I'm asking cause were planning to move up that way... but 0*?! Tell me you are all talking about Alaska and not WA PLEASE!!

My mom and sis live near Olympia... they both laugh at my DH when he pulls out an umbrella... neither of them even own one (neither do I) my mom refers to them as 'kites' LOL!

Gordon, I love your DG Garden Idea... looks like my moms entire yard will become a DG Garden this summer! You have all be wonderful and so helpful with planning her yard with me... I cant wait to get up there and begin the work! ((hugs to all))

Living in Fremont, I can understand your DH grabing a brella, Where is he from? We are all used to getting wet, thats why we all have rust tans. LOL

Forgot to say, Know the area

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Hey oneanjl ~ It's me...I'm going on the cruise in September with my family and I live in between Sequim and PA. It does get cold here, but not that cold that often. We had some amazingly low temps last winter, but this past one I think the lowest we've had has been in the high 20s. We are in the "rain shadow," also known as "the blue hole" (so named because when pilots are flying over and there is huge cloud cover there is a blue hole in the Sequim/PA area. I absolutely LOVE it here and can't imagine living anywhere else (born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA and lived 8 years in Arizona). We only get about 16-25" of rain per year (average...sure seems like more this year). At any rate, I would recommend this place to anyone. . .I love it, love it, love it! It would be nice to have another DGer close by. Tills is the closest at about 60 miles right now.

We are looking into Port Angeles.... but havent decided quite yet. I'll be up there in early June to work on my moms yard transformation.... going to take DH to Port Angeles and scope things out some more. I fell in love with that town a long time ago, so I'm sure its changed alot since then! LOL. only 3 more years to go...then we are outta Cali! I too grew up in so cal San Gabriel area, havent been back down there in a long time :o)

As for DH, he grew up across the bay from me... I too never liked using an umbrella... maybe its in my genes :o) and have always hated the heat/sun. (hence alaska vacations). I dont understand why he bothers with an umbrella...just make a run for the door! LOL! water never hurt anyone :o) I'll have to buy him one of those umbrella hats when we move north :o)

Mom was here in Cali from mid Dec to the end of Jan and thankfully missed most of the cold weather up there this year. We were laughing cause we were all bundled up (cold here) and she was walking around in short sleeves! only put her jacket on once in 6 weeks! LOL!

outtamygourd...dmail me and I'll tell you all about our wonderful alaska cruises :o) I dont want to step on Gordons toes and make his thread really really long! :o) ((hugs Gordon))

Snohomish, WA

Its okay!! I am glad the thread is getting used! I like reading about Alaska and we are all friends in the PNW forum!!:-) If Dgers can't talk on a thread about DG gardens for and from DGers whats the world coming too?

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! I know what you mean...I guess I'm being a lil more cautious these days...lol!

Alaska.... well... I really could go on...and on.....and on..... LOL!

but,if you tell me the cruise line and what ports you are going to... I can give ya some tips and hints on which 'side trips' to skip and which ones are a 'must see' :o)

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Oneanjl - I'd be interested in hearing what you liked and didn't like and what side trips they offer on the cruises. I grew up there, but haven't taken a cruise up there.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! okay... let me go look up all my 'princess patters' and I'll do a post on the tours and ports we visited... we took Princess cruises both years. In May 2006, and then in July 2007 (honeymoon!)
I'll be back in a few :o)

Yes. And start a new thread for those with dialup (so they don't have to wait for the whole thread to load) or who aren't as interested as I am.

Gotta go get some sleep. Everybody, don't forget to hold Carole (Murmur) and Steve in your hearts tonight.

In Ketchican... we were only there 1/2 day.... we took the totem Bight park tour... it was nice, I love native art, but we were really rushed and didnt get to see the town. The town has wood staircases for streets... looked really interesting and we definitely want to go back to Ketchican, just to explore the town and how it was all built on water.

Juneau.. first year we did the tram and trek... really nice walk/hike and saw alot of flora and fauna. I didnt care for the 'tram ride to the mountain top' scared of heights! lol! but got alot of nice eagle shots on the way up and down.
Second year we did the Mendenhall glacier and hatchery tour...Very Nice! I cant believe we missed the glacier on the first trip! WHAT was I thinking?!
DH also went salmon fishing.. and I went shopping! lol! He caught a salmon, but it costs a fortune to clean and ship it back, so he gave it away :o(

Skagway... we did the goldpanning tour---SKIP IT! big dud! LOL! Of course I live in Cali and have goldpanned many, many times... but this was really a poor tour thrown together by the cruise lines and the tour guide had no idea what she was talking about :o(

First year at skagway: Experience the Yukon Another MUST SEE! bus tour takes you on the same hike as the goldpanners back in 1898... you will be amazed at how these people drug loads and loads of supplies up the mountain for some gold. then at the top, we got to go to a museum and a dog sledding camp, lots of lil puppies and you can take a ride on the mushers sled with the dogs... lots of fun!-I'll post a pix of this one! :o)

Sitka- You MUST SEE the Raptor center! really interesting place where they are rehabing raptors...etc. we also did a walking tour of the city which is also interesting.

Victoria- Believe it or not...no butchardt gardens! it was closed both years! Still on my to do list, so if you can go there and havent been...definitely go! We took a horse drawn carriage ride thru the city first year. really nice to see the parliment all lit up at night. 2nd year we went to the maritime museum which was also really really nice (and cheaper than all those tours!) oh, yeah...and LOTS of shopping in all the ports! LOL!

Bring a digital camera with lots of memory....and a laptop to download pictures everyday!
I have 10,000 pictures just of sunsets.... 7,000 pictures of icebergs in the Tracy Arm Fjord... lol, but shutterbug is another hobby of mine. :o)

All righty then!!! I got the mother of all plants coming for my DG garden, a trade plant from Dave!!! It was the Holy Grail for me to get, now what should I send him in return? Rhodie is too obviuos, but I want to send him something from the PNW, any suggestions? I'm a little excited about it , like getting an autoghraph from someone famous!!

Kingston, WA

What is he sending you?

Snohomish, WA

I think a comfrey or canna , but I told him a tumble weed would be good! Anything! It is just so cool of him to take time out to do this for me. Did you know Dave isn't a gardener?? lol He's a computer geek!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

wow, a trade with Dave! Very cool. Gordon, I think he's both-this place started as his own site for his seed trades....

Hmm, now what grows here in PNW that will also thrive in Texas' alkaline soil and 100' summers.....that's tough!

Snohomish, WA

I know that is why I need help on this one. I don't want to be known as the guy who sent Dave the plant that lasted one summer!! lol

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Why don't you ask Dave if he has a want list, I have a very nice Catus, I started from seed.

Snohomish, WA

He doesn't garden!! No want list or have list. They recently moved into a new home and are starting over, so he isn't sure what to send either!! I was thinking a yucca, I have a few or agave, I have one. But I would like it to be a PNW plant or something associated with here. Still drawing a big fat zero!!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I have 'Adames Needle' you can come out and get a piece.

Thanks for the offer tilly! I have that and soaptree and gold edge. What about an azalea? Do you think it would make it there in shade?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm not sure what they grow in Texas, But yes that would be good. why not drop into that forum and lurk a bit, see what they like. just a thought.
^_^

Snohomish, WA

Thanks for the help tilly! Where is everyone? This is right up the rests ally! HELLO OUT THERE!!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Its Saturday nite, who knows, I just got home from work a couple of hours ago. Sorry ^_^

Snohomish, WA

This is my one day off and totally understand tilly! Just haveing fun!! I have to do everthing in one day, and its been busy!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I know the feeling, I have split days next week, hate that

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Hey - busy day here. Off to the Dunn Gardens tour (fantastic), then lunch, then a prolonged Nursery visit then home, then research!
Azaleas in TX? Well, maybe not the best choice - too hot/dry. You don't want to be remembered as the one who sent him the "high maintenance plant".
Find out his zone & google for plant choices. Start something from seed for him, that could be at home in his particular zone/conditions/siting.
Or, you might consider something that is dormant in the summer & does not have to live through high temperatures/drought.
Where in TX?

PS - we missed you today - you would have enjoyed the gardens. Very nice - very native.
have a great week - one of these days we'll meet up at Wells Medina when you get off work...a definate wallet-emptying experience!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Tough one!!! What vines do we have that might grow okay there?

Snohomish, WA

I have some tropical vines I got last week in a trade!! Got to id them all but they would be great! I have so much I forgot all about them!! In my own house too! lol

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL. Your kitchen is a busy place . . .

Mine, too, on my second set of Arbor Day trees . . .

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Do you still have any camellia? I saw your other post about sending someone one in a trade When I was at the Dallas Arboretum in January, they had a TON of camellias, and also a bunch of ferns.

Snohomish, WA

One camellia and one of these vines!! Thank you ladies, saved anouther man from doing something stupid!!

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hello Gordon,
How about something from the tulip festival which should be in full bloom in 2 weeks?
Have you planted anything new?
You need to take an extra day or two off work....lol one day to do all you want is not enough!
Happy gardening,
Carla

Snohomish, WA

Hey Carla!! I am taking some time off in a few weeks. I already have the camellia and vine packed up and ready to go. I have a go between who will see Dave this Sat.4-12. Just got to get it to her before Fri. Can do!!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Gordon - are you still able to come to the swap/potluck?
I must bring you something for your DG garden, but I don't know what you're looking for these days. Sorry for any redundancy, but is the area for Sun-Lovers, or is their shade? Please let me know by the weekend so I can oblige you. Thx! K

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, I second that! What are you looking for, Gordon?

Snohomish, WA

Almost anything! I have some ginger I am going to put in from a trade and there are cannas, daylilies, lilac, mondo grass, or there is so much already, but I want to cram it full!! Maybe a hosta or some small bloomers 8- 10" tall? I want it to say "Look waht great people are here on DG! The possibilities are endless!".

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)
