DG garden

Snohomish, WA

After doing some trades and meeting some members and swapping plants, I find myself with enough plants to plant a whole new bed at least 10' x 10'! So I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool to plant a DG garden! Post pics and trade for stuff to go into it. Not to big,but totally filled with DG plants! Anyone want to?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

That sounds cool
Would you put a marker in, of the DGer who gave the plant?
And what type of area are we thinking, sun, shade ?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Gordon, that sounds like a good idea.
Are you going to have a work party, too?
I had decided to do something similar, but with a different twist.
I need to prepare the area first & then make the plot known.
In any case, are you looking for certain types of plants? Colours? What is the aspect - full sun or...? How's that soil? Size (ht/sprd) parameters?
Let us know details so we can give you options. I will have more plants to offer as the next month progresses. If you were wanting anything in particular, please make that info known. Otherwise we can post what we have to offer here, right???

Snohomish, WA

No I don't need a work party but as long as they are on a Sat. you can count me in! I just have enough to plant a little bed and thought it would be a cool DG thing to do.The hard part for soe would be space. I am spoiled eith 5 acres but some others like Analog don't have that big of a yard. maybe a DG container garden in that case. I would make tags to show who I got the plant from and how you recieved it; seeds, cuttings or live plant. No rules other than just DG received things in there. I am going to build a raised bed and do it!I saw on some web site that metal tags you write on with a pencil, wont wash away , or make some like they had at the NWG Show.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Gordon, actually white plastic plant sticks with pencil is permanent too.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Very cool idea - and I would probably just continue to use my little white plastic spoons and laundry marker! My yard isn't all that big, but I have one area in the back (along my so-called "creek" aka drainage ditch that would be ideal.

I've been doing lots of lurking, but not much posting. Lots of fun things to read!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Sounds like fun! Was great meeting you yesterday Gordon!

Snohomish, WA

Thank you Laurie! I have been able to remember plants without labeling , but just like the bifocals and grey hair, things change! I would need a big plastic label the way I write!LOL Do they make plastic gravy ladels?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Actully Yes, but hard to find. Mini blinds work great, I have a old one I will donate to the cause. and love the idea.

Snohomish, WA

Thanks to mistygardener I have a lot of seeds, and some have the DGers name on them. Plus some of the plants at the trade, and the next one in April, should have enough for a raised bed about 10' x 10'. This is like the ultimate DG thing to do!Unless there is a yearly convention, oooh!

I am getting old Tilly . It took me awhile to figure out miniblinds. I get it now, break off pieces to write on. LOL Man was I confused for a second though!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Sorry I didn't mean to stress you , I should of explained a little better, a old Mini blind slat is great for writing on with a sharpie and stays a long time, with plenty of room to write on. I use a blue one.
Do you want one?

Snohomish, WA

A sharpie or a old blind? LOL I think ther is one in the basement or the old barn. Great idea!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Gordon - the mini blinds work real well, especially if you spray the writing with a clear coat of lacquer. However, the squirrels apparently needed mine for decorating, because they stole them. Little thieving monkeys!

Snohomish, WA

The cats have scared away all the theiving little critters around here. I hope I have some of those thick ones, need alot of info on one tag. DG member, plant name, date planted, so you can see how it growsand maybe place of orgin, like seeds from Dallas Tx.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

That must have been the Squirrel contingency I saw hitchhiking south on 405... I hope they went to Seattle!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

They didn't show up here, thank goodness.
the only problem I have is if Tyler thinks they look like something to chew. then I'm lost, so far so good.
NW you can make them as long as you want, or put two in, or make a spreadsheet and give them #s, and you have all the data on a CD,
I did that with my grab bag of Hosta's each has a number.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

good idea, Tills!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Gordon, I knew your idea would be a hit!!! :)

Snohomish, WA

I took my son's old baseball card album andf put the plant tags in there with dividers of what garden they are in. I want stakes big enough that I can take pics and post and people could see where the plants came from. Like "tillysrat - dicentra spectabilis-3/30/08" Then tilly can look at the bleeding hearts growth as I post pics. Just as an example the cards in here were pretty easy reading and the people were three deep on the day I went to the show.

But you still can do that on a data base, because most of us will most likey never see your yard, and you can set up pics. for those who want to see the progress. Just by the numbers you have given each plant.
Just a idea.

Snohomish, WA

And a darn good one. Time to use this pc for something other than spending money! And if you traded with me, I would probably dmail you a pic . Kinda like getting a sweater from your Aunt Bea and taking a pic wearing it and sending it to her. Only you wanted the plant!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

You got it. have fun
Need to go to bed, Nw a PC can be your friend, If I want to know how my plant is doing, you check my name to a number and wal la you have it.

Have a good eve!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hey Nw
I have something I want to put in your DG garden, I have some seeds but they haven't been treated yet the ones I had my DH threw out my mistake they where in the frig. I started them from seed 2 years ago the hardest seed I ever tried took me 3 tries and finally got two to Germ
I separated one clump last year have one to go.
Its 'Iris setosa'
I think thats the pic.

Yep that was it.
I also have some Blue Columbine I started from seed and save seeds from it, I can send you some. or I can get you the hole plant on both. If you would like them for DG garden, Going to take alot of cutting and seeds this year to trade, some have got big enough to do it this time, just never enought time for me to do it.

Lovely shades of blue Mary!

Snohomish, WA

Yeah Mary that would be great! If you are going to the Newcastle swap we can exchange there. I will have a few gunneras, cannas, and I don't know what else. If not are you going to the April 27 Dragonfly Nursery thing? I will be at both so we can do the swap when its good. Thanks for volunteering something! I hope more people plan a DG garden or trade with someone who is!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

My DG garden is in the early planning stages . . . way in the back of my brain . . . in hopes I will actually get around to it (right now, everything comes back to DH's health issues and upcoming surgery). Life is a weird ol' roller coaster right now!!!

But I truly love the idea of a DG garden.

BTW, Mary, remember those poppies you gave me that your DH had just set in pots (you weren't too happy with him for not putting dirt in!). Well, I never got around to adding dirt, or getting them in the ground either . . . but they are doing spectacularly well!!! I hope to get them in the ground in the next couple days. And the Forsythia you gave me is surviving nicely (still in the pot . . . I'm sooooo bad). I'm not sure yet if the Clematis is going to come back or not.

Snohomish, WA

That is great Murmur, I am only figuring mine out right now too. All the best to your DH hope he pulls thru with flying colors! If you want something to trade to put in it let me know.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Gordon, I'm sure I will - I love this idea of having something from as many DGer's as possible in one garden!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Carol I thought that was a Wisteria? and I don't care what you can do to those poppies They are like they have armor on them or something, I ripped up some very badly to move they got mixed up in that D### mint and I didn't want any of that to move with them, they wilted for a day or two and now are just find, very hearty fellows. Going to split up some more this year.
And no worry NW, I may have to miss allot of other outings but I will not miss going to Heidi's on the 27th, I'm taking my Vac. then come H### or high water. So I will definitely get to meet you there.
And I have a DG garden, I should I say a DG yard. I have plants from Pix, Murmur, Katie59, Heidi and Seeds from Laurie, Rach, Heidi tru Rach and Suzie and other DGers, and more coming, Ooo'my I guess I better do the number and data base thing to. next year I will have more to share. This is my first year with DG, and learning allot on dividing, seed saving and many other things, I just wish I had more time to do it.
If anyone would like any of the Iris, Columbine or poppies, let me know I can have them ready for Heidi's

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Duh - you're right, Tills - I even have it marked that way!!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Gordon - so what are you looking for in your DG garden? Shrubs, trees, perennials - is it sun or shade? I think it's a tremendous idea.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Gordon...do you like Salvia, I have a nice rooted "Hotlips" for your DG garden. This is what it looks like.

Thumbnail by cocoajuno
Snohomish, WA

OOh the hot lips would be great, I have a good spot where half will mostly shade and half quite a bit of sun. I'll be able to mix it up a bit. And as many things as I can shove in a 10x10 riased bed. Unless the huge doug fur falls, then it's all sun!
Would you like to trade for a canna? I have King city Gold, Red King Humbert, and City of Portland if you are intrested.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

I would love to try "City of Portland" another DGer in NM sent me "Banana Canna" and they never came up. At this time I have no Canna's, although I grew them when I lived in Az.
Oh it would look nice growing around the greenhouse fence wouldn't it!

What a wonderful spot, Carla. So busy with energy.

Kathy

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Carla the deck looks wonderful with the greenhouse. I'm excited to see what you plant in your new beds!

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks Rachel,

I am still working on that...I have put in some lilies already up close to the fence and I transplanted some daffodils also...the daffs probably won't bloom this year, but oh well! I need to think about a few small evergreen type plants that like full sun, just so it doesn't go naked in the winter!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Carla - great idea about the saw. I'll be interested in seeing a prototype. Think how many PNW decks you could save.
