Blooming in March

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Well diehard, the world needs ditch diggers too. Don't worry about the grades, USCB will be fine for you. LOL>

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

no way DHS is the next up and coming plant missionary traveling the world to bring us new and exciting finds...he is gonna need to go high tech all the way in college...because he surely has the interest and gumption to go far...so yes DHS how does trig fit into it all...well it doesn't...it's the states idea of a good education (this said from the daughter of a mathmetician LOL) so keep plugging away and look towards the bigger rewards...a job you love doing what you love!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol... hope i never get that bad....
deanna, i looked, but they don't seem to have any terrestrial orchids

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

thanks! at least one person's on my side!! LOL JK

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Poor Trent-

My b. striata are blooming their little hearts out, I only have white, though. I'll dig you up some if you'd like.

Math can be very important to your later career, or not. I loved trig... Of course, I love puzzles of any form and will sit there for hours working on them. And, in the interests of full disclosure, should probably reveal that I do have a b.s. in applied mathematics.

Jenny

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Never really used trig for anything and can't say I use physics much either. Very few jobs require high level math. Same with chemistry etc.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

chemistry is what is really getting me... thats the only clas i consistently try in and i only have an 85 in there. i think that we should only learn the basics, and then choose a career category and learn the things needed for that job.... but thats just me

jenny that would be great!! but i can't have them now... it would have to be once i'm off restriction. i would get i trouble for doing "unauthorized" plant trading.... unless you're ever close enough to drop it off by my house

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Problem there is you need a wide base of knowledge for who knows what. Guess what, you need to know a little chemistry if you ever go into plants full time. Chemicals do different things and you need to understand what and why there are differences. Can't always go by "what that guy said", because "that guy" may be clueless.

Quoting:
doing "unauthorized" plant trading

LOL. That's cracking me up. Of all the things to get in trouble for.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, that is pretty funny. You can tell your parents your interest in grass like St. Augustine is better than being interested in that other kind.

Sorry, as most of you know, I am a retired high school and college counselor. You may not think so but you do use your math all the time - you just don't realize it because it is second nature to you now. Which can of tomatoes is a better buy??? How about figuring the circumference of a tree???? Gas milage???? How much fertilizer for how many square feet??? Rates of absorbtion????

And, about that chemistry, you will need more than a little to get a degree in horticulture.

At Midlands Tech we had a major in Automotive Repair. Because most cars are chock full of electronic equipment now the students had to take all kinds of computer courses and college calculus was a prerequsite to get into most of the courses. Now that is scary.

You can do this kiddo. If you can learn all these latin names of plants you can learn chemisty. Try and think about how you can apply the different chemicals/concepts to your gardening endeavors.

OK, no more granny rants.......

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

OMG Ardesia you sound like me..I used to tell my 15 yr old if he could remember the names of 500 YuGiOh cards and what they did math should be a breeze...LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Calculus for computers used in automotive repair? That's over kill. The guys who build the programs for that computer and the computer it's self need calculus but the operator doesn't. I guess if your looking at power curves and fooling with multiple variables and not using a computer then you would need the calculus but that's what the computer is for.

Oh I miss bond angles, the angle that is formed between two adjacent bonds on the same atom.
Tetrahedons my friend. That's about it. The heavier the element the quicker it will kill you. Yep that's what I remember. Use to know my way around a periodic table.

Military might be good for diehard too. Travel to exotic lands and meet new and interesting people. Once you hit a major things go pretty easy.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah... i took latin. so that is probably why i can remember them so easily. i get biochemistry much better than normal chemistry, its just the stoichiometry and gas laws that get me... the good thing is that i am starting to understand soultions and colligative properties.... we have a test fri, so hopefully i real good on it!
ps....i'd rather get in trouble for plants thand drugs! (core)

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Trent-

Next time I'm in Bluffton I'll drop the b.striata off for you. You can't get in trouble for unauthorized plant trading if they're plant gifts. ;*>

Just because the rest of us are old, doesn't mean we don't remember how to weasel word around the parents.

J

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol the closest thing to the military i'll ever be in is the military ball i'm going to this saturday!
and thanks soo much jenny! when you do, could you put a not on them that implies to my parents that we made the deal a while ago, oh like say, mid january??

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

J: No coaching the teenager on how to get around parents! LOL. I'm sure he's already an expert. Right Diehrd?
Deb

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

omgosh we are corrupting a minor...oh wait..you can't corrupt whats already corrupt can you...that's a double negative...oh so it's a positive what we're doing...yeah I knew I could spin it so we were all just helping our buddy LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol i'm confused.... i am, or at least Was an expert at it.... now i try not to have anything to hide, but when it comes to plants.... i just can't quit!!!!

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

well my back is def. telling me it hates what I did today - we had put up all our rose bushes in the cold frame the other nite and when I went in today they had pulled it back out yesterday...but nothing was in order...arrghhh so I had to re arrange it by tea, english, floribunda, grandaflora, homeruns, knockouts, climbers and carpets...then I added all our altheas and re- arranged the crepes too....after work I put in a new bed..shade with the hellebores I got at parks a few weeks back, ajuga, varigated hydrangea and columbines rounding the corner to the sunnier side, which got a chocalate vine, veronica, limelight coneflwr, black eyed stellas, iris and glads...my back says it's time to go get prone...I think I am gonna listen to it....nite ya'll

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Diehrd: Your parents are lucky that you have an addiction that makes their property look beautiful!

Rednyr: Hope your back's feeling better this evening?

...and....the Naval Orange is blooming. Smells soooo wonderful.

Thumbnail by DebinSC
Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

deb, is that orange inside or out????

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Out.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

in the ground?is it a true variety of orange, or just called an orange like some plants?
is navel and naval the same thing?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

It is a real orange (navel/naval...whatever ;-> ). It's in a pot and is outside year round. ..along with a couple of Meyer lemons.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol i didn't mean to correct you, but the navels are theones we get in the grocery store, and i thought they couldn't live here... oh the possibilities!!!!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

No unauthorized plant purchases, don't forget! ;>

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh yeah... ur right DARN!!! well, maybe i could find a way to make them authorized!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Yes navel oranges can live here. I have a pink navel which is a little hardier but you can grow navels. There are better choices if you want fruit every year.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

where do you get your citrus?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I purchased it all from Ned Rahn up in Beaufort but I have seen navel oranges in sunshine also Lowes just had meyers lemons, tangerines and owari oranges.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah i saw those, but had no money!!! where has the best price???

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Are these considered "authorized" purchases??????

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

no... but i have not bought any yet!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Lowes has the best prices if you find what you want. Ned is reasonable.

Picture time, peaches in bloom.

Diehard here's the pink navel, no flowers yet. No fruit last year, probably not old enough yet. I was hoping it would fruit this year.

Sanbokan grapefruit just starting to flower.

Some sort of dwarf cavendish banana starting to come up. Not sure exactly what that one is but it does get fruit on it and I'm think if it's a long enough growing season it might be decent to eat.

Doesn't look like much, LOL.

Here's my mandarin orange which is very cold hardy. It's about to flower but I don't see any on it today.

Diehard you can grow these no problem same with the tangerine but if you really want a navel.
