Blooming in March
I think there are more pine limbs in the yard than on the trees. :)
You guys down near Beaufort/HH area, do you know if the Garden Gate nursery is worth a stop? I pass it each week when I drive down the Beaufort. Didn't find it in "Go Gardening" or Watchdog.
Deb
where is it?? never heard of it.

Meegan said she sees people keep it in the ground in IL so I thought alrighty then...it's gotta survive down here - well if it can survive me first LOL
On Hwy 21 ..just on the way out of town. Can't recall what's next to it ...landmarks or anything...
i know!! i love that place! i always get an amaretto or nerds milkshake they are sooo good. did u get a shake???
Deb, idk where hwy 21 is..... i'm guessing that it's in N. Beaufort County...
Diehrd: Yep, 21 heading out toward 17 north.
opk... i know where 17 is.... maybe ardesia knows
ardesia knows everything - I bet she'll help... :o) wish she were my neighbor!
cameron got a shake...some god aweful creation of peanut butter, oreo cookies, and two other things...I seriously thought I was going to be ill watching him drink it LOL darrin and I ate so many frings we burped onions until we hit I26 LOL
BTW we are trying to plan a trip to Charlotte on a Sunday in April (2nd or 3rd sunday) to see Elizabeth Lawrences Garden...anyone wanna come?!!! you know you want to!
amaretto or nerds milkshake, .....I can't seem to grasp what that would possibilly taste like. Yuck.
Red you went to cheeburger cheeburger? It's good for a change but not really my thing. I don't like 8 toppings on a burger so some of that is lost on me. Should have gone to the Squat and Gobble for local flare, best tee shirt in town. Giuliani stopped there while he was campaigning in the area.
As far as Garden Gate nursery I didn't see anything out of the ordinary but the prices were decent for the basics. I really haven't found any real good nurseries near me. I think it's because we have a bunch of transplants living here and they don't what grows here so they stick to the standards. Surprisingly I haven't found much in Savannah either. I've seen some very nice gardens and radomly run into odd plants but I haven't found a nursery with a wide range of plants. I have to say the lady who's ordering for our local Lowes is on the ball. In fact I think I gave her some ideas because last year I was looking for a few things and they seem to have shown up this year. She nailed the fruit trees this year. Last year I had a talk with her over cold hardy citrus and some low chill hour trees. They are here this year. Don't know if our little chat had anything to do with it.
From my calulations, ardesia is about 150 years old and grows enough stuff to put that orchid guy to shame.
LOL, only kidding Alice.
aaahhhh i forgot about squat n gobble!
the amaretto and nerds milkshakes were separate....one time it was amaretto... the next it was nerds.
yeah i love our lowes!!!
core- I know you work from home - but they say find a niche and run with it...you really outta open a nursery...you would clean up...I bet DHS would be one of your best customers LOL we were in a hurry so I have to say it was really good advice... guacamole, tomato, jalapenos, onions, lettuce (why is jimmy buffets song going thru my head right now LOL) no wonder my stomach protested...but it sure was tasty going down
are you done with your homework young man?!?!? (sorry your mom paid me 5 bucks to say that...just kidding)
lol hahaha uuuummm nope....tha'ts what activity peroid and study hall are for,as well as lunch! tha's when i do my HW!
i probably would be a great customer....granted that i had the money!
Well, I am applying for Medicare shortly, LOL. Actually I do feel pretty close to 150 years old with this renovation going on. There are usually 9 guys here everyday stepping all over my plants and today the roofers are due to demolish what the contractors missed in the garden. My irrigation system is off and we haven't had rain in forever so everything is pretty stressed. I have tried to water by hand with the hose (anyone else old enough to remember when that was the only way to water) but half the time my hoses are buried under lumber right now.
Of course I know Garden Gate (it's a nursery isn't it? LOL) but I am with Core on this one, ho hum. At one time it was THE place to find interesting things but it was sold and the new owners spent a lot of $ fixing the place up but it lost it's character and good plant selection in the process. There is another place called Buds and Blooms that is not bad (for here.) It is right over the old bridge to Lady's Island, just a short distance, 1/4 mie maybe on your right. About 2 minutes from downtown.
It always stuns me that there are so few good nurseries in this part of the lowcountry. When I visit my kids in Jacksonville I can find better material at their ACE hardware stores than we can find in nurseries here. I usually prefer buying from the small hole in the wall places that have horticultural gems hidden in the nooks and crannies but I only know pf one like that here- Ned Rahn of Plantfolks. Give me a heads up and I'll take you there if you are interested Deb. It is located in their yard and not easy to find.
Core that is funny about your Lowe's. I just heard about a bunch of avid gardeners from HHI that have been traveling up here to go to our Lowe's because they think the plants are better. Not!
I have been told there is an interesting nursery south of Savannah in Richmond Hill, right on 17. Can't remember the name exactly but I think it was two guys names. Jim and Bob's or something like that. I also found a nice nursery down on St. Simons Island that I thought was worth another trip - lots and lots of tropicals.
Yea, the Garden Gate isn't really worth a stop. The Lowe's in town is better- sad. That isn't saying much. Pitiful. However, they had some nice Cape Fuschia today, never tried those before- so I figured I would attempt to kill them off. ;*>
In Savannah I like Secret Gardens- not the show room on 17, but the green houses that are a bit of a challenge to find. They have fun plants. I got a Nunn orchid there last year that is doing well and about 6 different types of cuphea.
Jenny
NUN ORCHID!!!!! where in Sav is it????
Ardesia: I'm still going to Beaufort once a week (Tuesdays usually). I'd sure like to check out "Ned's yard"! LOL. I If I find I can carve out more time than a short lunch break, I'll D-mail you and maybe you can navigate me there if you're free.
I can probably manage a run to Buds and Blooms at lunch time.
Thanks to you and Core and Jenny for the lowdown on Garden Gate.
Deb
The one thing with Ned's yard is I wish he would prune his azaleas. A little to wild looking for my tastes. LOL. Ned's wife loved the orange xterra, asked me all sorts of question about it. It surprises me how people react to the xterra, totally different then when I'm driving my car.
Looks like it needs to be dusted.
core - shame on you
Debin- very pretty! we have a frost advisory for tonite how bout you? keep that purty thing covered! it's a keeper ... :o)
No frost advisory, but the forecast is for high 30s overnight. Gonna chance it. Not covering anything. Living dangerously! ;)
i struggle with that too... southern dewberry isn't it?
Don't know. I thought it was some kind of wild blackberry?
Oh...great!
... Freeze watch in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday
morning...
The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a freeze
watch... which is in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday
morning.
Temperatures are expected to drop into the 30s late Monday night
after midnight... and get down to 31 or 32 by 5 am. Temperatures
should then remain steady through sunrise... before rising quickly
above freezing by 9 am. A few patches of frost are also possible.
A freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible.
These conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
Sigh.
the two are vey similar ugh! I hate un-warm weather!!!!!
Debin I share your sentiments....but I would prefer mother nature get it out of her system this week...I so need to get my seedlings outta the house! I have been bringing them outside for fresh air for over two weeks now and will be glad when I can get them in the ground!
I actually have a Centaura Montana starting to bloom right now....
