Daily Pics Vol 72

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh that IS funny about the Roadrunner. It would be fun to see video of THAT.

this Ringed Turtle-Dove

I think that may be a Barbary Dove (a domesticated variant of African Collared Dove). Similar to Collared Dove but paler; definitely not a Turtle Dove.

Resin

Resin it looks just like the picture In Sibley's. Can you tell me why you are excluding it as being the Ringed?

The Roadrunner eats meat scraps.

I have a couple more pics of it. I would expect the Eurasian to be darker especially by the tail. If it is the Barbary as you say it would also be a new one for me so I do have a silver lining.

Not much on the walks today. One real bad BB shot. But I did spot a small group of robins today versus the singles I have been seeing this week.

Burn, thanks. I think other exotic birds can be seen right here in our post. :-) And yes, it's nice to be by the water, however, this is a lake and we're happy here.

Here I was just now spotted these two love birds, the male and female cardinals. :-)

angele; the doves are lovely!

Just looked in Sibley - he has a naming error there, the bird for which he illustrates and gives the scientific name Streptopelia risoria, is Barbary Dove. So he has the right scientific name and right bird pictured, but the wrong English name. So your ident was correct, but confusing in (I guess unknowingly!) using Sibley's wrong name.

Resin

Thanks so much Resin, appreciate your taking a look. Ringed Turtle-Dove is the common name that I also found at an (USA) Audubon's site. http://esaudubon.org/_b4a/00000077.htm">esaudubon.org/_b4a/00000077.htm
I was wondering if there was a difference with the common name and was going to provide the scientific.
I'm wondering, is there a body that sets the scientific names for birds? If so, is it accepted world-wide? Time to Google :-)

That roadrunner is the neatest bird. He has a person for a pet, and he has trained the pet to feed him.

He cracks me up!

Nice pics everyone. We are above zero these days. Even some snow is melting. What will I do with ten tons of spilled thistle seed in my yard?

LOL GG. I once heard a comedian talking about if aliens watched humans with their pets who they would think was the "master' species.. after-all who follows whom with a pooper-scooper!!!!

Ten tons of spilled Thistle seed Sybil? the birds around here gobble up everything!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I hear ya sybil! I cleaned up under mine a little today before it rains agin tomorrow evening. It has been a mess out there due to constant moisture either in the form of snow or rain all winter!

angele, forgot to mention that I like your Roadrunner too! That is soo funny!

My sunglasses didn't stay on, very long , Rose, that pic was of today, a snowy day and some more tomorrow. Glad to see your Blue birds are thinking of renting, lots of baby pictures on the way.

Nanny I'm still dancing LOL.

Love your Barbary Dove, much paler then our. Congrat on your new bird Angele

I had a downy and a female hairy visit today, but the darn Starlings kept scaring them away.

Don't see the Juncos anymore. This was taken at the end of January.

Angele and Lily...Love your "love birds"!

Nanny...nice pics and it looks like you are having the same weather we are having. We're due for a big storm tomorrow night and possible snow on Monday. The poor birds won't know what hit them after the warm temps the past few days.

Sybil...so glad you are having warmer weather and yes I've got to clean under my feeders too!

Burn..I love Juncos and ours are still here in abundance! Sorry your weather is still so cold!

Here is a Male Red-winged Blackbird...they just showed up yesterday.

Nice thing about up North weather, you do get a good winter, and be done with it. Here down South, with the alternating hot and cold, the garden's flowers get so confused. Lot of spring flowers will be frost bitten because they thought spring has arrived and bloom so early. I found finches in my greenhouse all the time, then I've to chase them out. Is that why some finches are called "Housefinches"?

Lily_Love it's a Chineese Goose. I think the proper name is China Goose.

Makes one wonder, did Sibley get the error from Audubon, or Audubon get it from Sibley?? Or does it go back further than that?? One never knows! Quite often errors like this have a way of getting copied and repeated over and over, I've seen it happen in plant books too.

A tricky ident question, too! I'll go for Dark-eyed Junco, but it isn't easy!

Chinese Goose, which is a domesticated breed selected in China from the Swan Goose Anser cygnoides native to eastern Asia.

Here's a Cardinal...female or male juvie?

Thanks Resin for the ident. When I first saw this little bird, the other end was exposed, but just as I snapped the picture, he did a 180. It was waiting for a turn at the cherry and nut suet cake.

Keep on getting better Pelle! We miss ya!

Pelle - sorry to hear that you were in the hospital. I've been MIA all last week - taking care of grandson 24/7, but I'm free today and trying to catch up on some of the threads. Hope you are feeling better. Enjoyed all of the pics. Here is a pic of a Hairy (educated guess by the size). Eleanor

It is beautiful here today after recieving another foot of snow Friday night into Saturday. The squirrels are having fun out under the feeders. Eleanor

This squirrel seems a bit baffled!! I was hoping he would go all the way up in with just his tail hanging down but he wouldn't humor me so I settled for this shot!! Eleanor

Ha! Eleanor! Maybe you need to hire a squirrel trainer so they will cooperate!

I've had a chest cold (did you give it to me Pelle? ;-) ), so i've been neglecting the birds and have no new photos. I DID see this over on the hummingbird and butterfly forum and suggested it be posted here. Such a delightful photo.

Mrs_Ed, the cold/flu season is worse than years past. It seems like no one escaped them. Hope you too will feel better soon.

It's good having you back Pelle.

I finally got a glimples of the titmouse out on my feeder. It seems like they come for the seeds and quickly take off.

Thumbnail by Lily_love

Beautiful photos everyone & so good to hear from you Pelle. I hope your breathing is easier with each passing hour.
Amazing to see all the snow; it is so warm here - in the 70s during the day. We have a very cold 22 forecast for Monday night. Hope it doesn't come true - the apricot tree is in full bloom.
Lily that spot has incredible beauty. Love the little pier!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oooh pelle, come and have some of my tasty suet ball, too late, already gobbled up by greedy little birds! They will have to wait until tomorrow for the next one!

Nice pic Lily! I love the Titmouse. That is a great spot!

Is anyone available to start a new thread soon?
