So it was not as cute as Charlotte and her web, huh Lefty? Lol!
...and while we tap our feet waiting for spring...
Would you believe . . . . . . . . I never read Charlotte's Web?
But to answer your question: I don't think so.
(mouth dropped to floor) How could you have never read Charlotte's Web? A story that has a new level of meaning at every stage of life. It's never too late you know. Then again, it could bring you back to the fateful day of that fat spider ^_^
I saw the cartoon. 30 years ago or whenever it was released.
In 5th grade, I had a wonderful teacher that would read stories to us in the afternoon and that was one of them. You can't beat a little daydreaming with permission.
Moby - I must be 2yrs older than you... my third grade teacher read it to us.
It's a must read, at any age.
Yeah, we were in 4th grade when Mrs. Parks read it to us. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when Charlotte bit the dust... *sigh*
My mom made me trade in my old crayons for a surprise wrapped in a paper bag. When she finally showed me that it was a book, I could have cried at the unfairness of it. (reading was not my thing at the time-2nd grade) It was Charlotte's Web :) we read that and then the Narnia series together, and I haven't stopped reading since. Looking back, it was one of the best trades I ever made. It's a kids book, but definitely worth a read Leftwood.
Yeah, yeah. Okay, I'll read it. Sometimes I like kids' books better. I liked the first Harry Potter book, but haven't read any of the others.
Right after I finish my backlog of 160 or so North American Rock Garden Society bulletins (1965-2006).
Think of them as 40 Lily yearbooks.
Now which would you choose?
I'd probably wait for the movie. ;) LOL
Shut your eyes & point....
Leftwood:
You-haven't-read-Harry Potter 2-5!!!!? Gasp! Choke! Clutch my heart!! Oh! I feel faint!!! I loved everyone of them and we have all the movies. Movies don't come anywhere near the books.
Oh, well I haven't read Charlottes Web either. Saw the movie though.
I know what you mean. I couldn't even think of giving up my issues of Fine Gardening. Even though it does seem geared to rich peoples gardens or people that can inhabit a house for more than a decade. Shoot 5 years is a long long time for us.
yehudith, I know what you mean about Fine Gardening. I hold on to issues people have given me for the plant and design ideas and pictures. But it bothers me that some of these magazines paint a picture of gardening that gives the impression to beginners that its an exclusively high dollar hobby. The peace, joy, and fulfillment that come from gardening can be achieved by all income levels. For me the thrill of watching a seed that was given to me grow to maturity often far outweighs seeing my most prized and expensive bulb bloom.
Neal - that is so true and I'm glad you said it. Gardening speaks to us in a basic, maybe primeval way. It doesn't take money; it just takes awareness.
thanks for saying it.

"Now which would you choose?" if that was to me Leftwood- books :) just reading the last few comments explains why- other people's thoughts are interesting and beautiful and sometimes harder to get to in person than when you hand them a pen and paper (or keyboard)
Not that I don't love my own thoughts and ideas (i am an artist still, sort of) ;) just life is so short it would take me hundreds of years to have gotten 1/2 the knowledge & sense of self i've gotten out of reading other people's lives and synthesizing that information.
reading other people's lives and synthesizing that information.
If only more people would do that! The "simple" application of what is imbibed is lost to so many. And of course reading is only one way. Basic observation skills in real life are so lacking too.
Maybe I'll rename this thread "while we tap our feet waiting for the armadillo to stop digging up my lilies!" Mornings are especially stressful now that my armadillo who I've fondly named "Dilly" has returned. Last year he was especially destructful, digging up everything in sight, nightly! This year he seems to not particularly like my new choice in mulch, just kind of disturbing it in most places, digging thru it to the soil and beyond in other spots. I found last year's Dilly didn't take to kindly to "Shake a-way" but this year's Dilly doesn't seem as intimidated by it. IF anyone has a suggestion (other than a flashlight and gun) to send him packing, I'd sure appreciate it. You now how we carefully place our new lily bulbs, hoping they will STAY there, undisturbed until they bloom, well, my prayer is they just stay planted! UGHHHH
Carolyn
Thankfully, that's one critter I don't have to deal with. Good luck.
I suppose a Texan armadillo wouldn't be fazed by hot & spicy, either, right?
LOL!
Nothing seemes to phase these critters. What amazes me is how high they can jump! My 3 ft garden fence means nothing to them! Dogs don't bark at them, cats just sit and watch. About the only deterent is a shotgun or a car! Sadly, I'll just have to wait it out, eventually they will settle back into the woods, or so I pray they will.
Carolyn
They can JUMP????? erk!
Yes they can jump. Simply amazing!!
Haven't seen Dilly lately, except of course the one on the highway on Sunday (hee hee), so maybe the 'shake a-way' is working!
Carolyn
Texas speed bumps, eh? Creepy...
Aren't armadillos just rabbits with armour?
Well, not if you have them! Last night they dug up the glads, the lilies and a hole the size of a one gallon bucket next to my new Rose of Sharon!!! UGGGG!
Carolyn
Oh Carolyn, what a bummer. Were you able to save any of them?
Time will tell. Its so hot here already the fact that they had to be 'replanted' may do them in. When life gives you lemons make lemonade, still looking for the ice! Ha ha. Have a great holiday to all!
Carolyn
Heck, when life hands you lemons, I say break out the salt and tequila!
Hum, I always thought that was limes? Then again, I'm more of a diet coke gal!
But seriously, other than Dilly's little visits my previous years lilies are doing very well. It's a joy every morning to stroll thru the garden looking for newbies (newly opened babies). Seems this year everything here in my corner of the world is larger than ever before. All is good. How about the rest of the world? Are your lilies amazing you this year?
Carolyn
My first asiatic just bloomed! I'll take pictures today.
The bulbs I got with Neal a few years ago were all mowed down by
deer the first year, most were mowed down the second year and
this year only a few have been nibbled on. Maybe they become less
tasty as they get more mature? I may very well see some of those
bulbs bloom for the first time this year. (Fingers AND toes crossed).
Tam
Tammy, I understand your pain. My dearest gardening friend has bunny issues like your deer problem. I share with her my perennials, she plants them and waters them, then poof they are gone, BUNNIES! One ear we had an infestation of grasshoppers. Overnight they completely wiped out everything green, tree leaves, shrubs, and prized perennials. We each have a varmit, sorry!
Carolyn
Lily crazy around here! From barely pipping out of the soil to nearly 5' tall, but no blooms yet. Its typically June before I see blooms, but Oh, what a June it promises to be! While I saw deer tracks in some beds, and did find the occasional bunny chewed tip, but I guess the cats and dogs are doing their jobs because the casualties have been few.
Tammy, glad to hear you may finally see blooms on those! How about the ones from this year- did you take extra measures to protect them?
We had another frost last night. Will my lillies be OK? I covered my annuals, but the perennials were on their own. To much area to cover.
That is probably going to depend on the stage of growth. When my lilies got hit earlier some of them were total goners and others I thought were damaged for the season have put on buds and are growing fine. I think only time will tell...
this is a shot of an iris but you can see the L. regale album stems in the pic, these are some I thought would be goners for sure.
Only my Orienpets are that tall so far--all the other lilies are languishing under wet, rainy skies . Sigh. Anyway, the iris look great this year!
I like that one Tammy. Do you know its name?
