Hi and welcome Grapus! Don't ya just love those Tangos. :)

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Grampus, what are you pollinating the tetra L.regale x tetra white henryi with? and are seeds easier to send overseas?
here is where I got my seeds last year- still waiting for signs of life, but it will take a few months to know if I have anything happening:
http://buggycrazy.vstore.ca/index.php/cName/lily-seeds

I've been able to get a few of her seeds to form bulbs from year before last, and being new at lilies I think that's a good sign :)

Andebu, Norway

Thanks. Yes i do. Last year i made to cross Ilga with Stellar light. Hope to see some great ny types.

You all are killing me!! As some of you know. I moved into Neal's old house. I have seen his lilies many times on visits, but at the time lived at a place lilies would not grow. Of course he took his with him and now I get to have lilies! Through DG co-op's I will have 150+ lilies planted this spring. I will not have as many as Neal had here YET, but can't wait to sit and enjoy what I just got to visit before. I pick my bulbs up Tues! It was my xmas gift from my SO.

One more question. I was sent Formosa lily seed in a trade. I just experimented and throw a few in a pot under some grow lights and the rest WS. The ones under the lights went crazy and I have little "grass" sprouts coming up and also the ws jugs are sprouting the "grass" also. How should I handle them at this point? I know I'm going to plant some in a pot in the garden to lift in fall and some planted directly in the garden and hope they can handle our winter. Any suggestions or ideas are needed.
Geo
The person I traded with also told me They would/could bloom the first year?? Is this possible?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I think they can bloom within one year. They are also supposed to be a rather short lived lily. The less you move them, the less stress they need to endure. So I might leave them in pots, move them outside as the weather warms and transplant out in fall, disturbing them as little as possible.

They should do fine in your climate.

Seeds are some of the most fun, aren't they?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

grampus: Steller light Really subtle and beautiful.
i am not at your speed where lilies are concerned but love them as part of a garden composition

Oh now you've gone and got me interested in lilies from seed.
I tried it once years ago but not since. How long from seed to
bloom for orientals? Are asiatics easier than orientals?

Grapus - lovely pictures!

Tam

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Asiatics and trumpets bloom sooner, a couple years from seed. Orientals can take 3-5 years to bloom.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

I don't think there will be any cold hardiness problems with any Formosa lilies in your zone 6a. Many might very well bloom in the first year, but think of it as a bonus, not an expectation.

What fun to actually buy a gardener's house (and with good soils), daylilydaddy. I hope someone will appreciate my endeavors when, eventually, I sell my house.

Grapus (or anyone), I still have seed in the freezer of most that I offered in this thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/796817/ . If you would like any, let me know. Note that most are hypogeal delayed germination.

Tammy, asiatic lilies and trumpets are the easiest from seed, IMO. And certainly easier than most alpines.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Unless you grow them under lights ;*)

Andebu, Norway

Hyblaean: I have not made this cross, got it as a bulb. But gonna try to cross it with some orienpets. Yes, seeds are easier to send than bulbs. Do you have some? I have some leftovers of Ilga x Stellar light( asiatic) and Acapulco x Muscadet(oriental). Made bye me.

Leftwood, i am intrested.

Grapus, click on my user name (Leftwood) and send me a D-mail message. Tell me what seeds you would like, and your name and address to send to.

I had a d-mail all typed up Leftwood but I've got a second batch from
NARGS to plant. I exerted the tiny little bit of willpower left to resist your
very generous offer. I may try my hand at crossing and saving my own
this summer. Thank you though!

Tam

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Grapus: Nope, no seeds left here, or I would love to trade! I planted all mine this winter and they are currently living out this cycle of their life in the refrigerator crisper (some of them are from Leftwood's crosses, the others BuggyCrazy's- none are my own cross this year)
: ) maybe next year though! Weather and garden willing

You seed growers are an inspiration, I feel a new passion coming on. Tammy and wallaby1 have inspired me to try seed I once wouldn't have considered, and successes the last couple of years has me thinking I need to plunge into lilies now. Having seen some of Pard's beautiful seed grown specimens, I must try!

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

I get my lilies today!! I pick them up at Neal,s this afternoon. It's supposed to rain for the next week. Grrr, but at least I can fondle and look at bulbs and make plans for their new homes. I will post some pics of my new beauties to show you all what is coming your way. I know Neal enough to know the bulbs will be extra nice.

Thank you Neal for hosting this co-op. I would never be brave enough to take on such a task. My gardens and your ex-gardens will once again be filled with the sights and scent of lilies. I have been looking at my list of bulbs, then the pics of them I can find and the smile could not be wipe off my face for nothing. I keep looking up the name's of lilies I ordered and see the pic and just think OMG! that's going to be in my garden. With the co-ops i have been in this year and what I had. There will be over 200 lilies here. Not a lot by some of the lily people on here, but for me it's a dream come true.
Geo

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

George, 200 lilies in one shot is still a bunch of lilies to plant. :) You have fun "fondling" you new lilies. LOL :)

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Actually, that's an excellent word for it when you can't plant immediately. Fondle, sniff, and dream. :-)

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Laugh Geo: "I have been looking at my list of bulbs, then the pics of them I can find and the smile could not be wipe off my face for nothing. I keep looking up the name's of lilies I ordered and see the pic and just think OMG! that's going to be in my garden." that is exactly how I feel when getting plants in the mail. Those were some fabulous prices, too!! I can't wait to get mine :D
Neal, if I could afford to get all my lilies by just buying adults, I probably would. Not that the seeds aren't fun, but they are kind of a stretch as far as survivability and time till blooming size. It's not stopping me :) but I'm kind of just doing it to have the genetics available to me and not for the show, if that makes any sense. At least it's that way with daylilies- regular lilies I think I'm doing because I'm masochistic.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Handsome Man just called me at work to say I got a box from "a Neal Something-or-other." I'm so excited! Can't wait to get home from work! I told Handsome Man not to touch that box!

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Neal, recd. my box of lilies this morning. What gorgeous bulbs and large and healthy!
Now if my ground was thawed out and ready to go, I also have my trusty drill with bulb bit installed and away I go.

Hello all
I have to tell you how pleased I am with my bulbs. I picked them up yesterday at Neals, but was so busy with errands I didn't have time to look at them until last night. They are nice and big, firm and the thing I like the most is they don't have growing stalks or a very small one. I did another co-op here and they all had 2-4 inch growing stalks already. They were so hard to plant keeping the stalks from breaking. These are some of the best lily bulbs I have very received.

Neal, you have done a great job with this co-op and hope you will host again. Your choice of vendor and packing was perfect. Thank you so much for doing this for us DGer's. Now though I have to listen to my SO complain because the frig will not hold food. Every shelf is bags of lilies! The forecast says rain for the next few days. I am going to try to plant as many today as possible. Gotta go. The lilies are screaming to be put in their new home!
George

Grandview, TX(Zone 8b)

Even though I didn't participate in this co-op I still smile. I feel everyone's exitement about their order. Only a true gardener understands the happiness a box of bulbs brings.

Comic moment: a friend has a hair salon/gift shop/tanning beds. I drove by the other day and promptly made a u-turn and rushed inside. The sign out front said "Our new bulbs have arrived". They were tanning bed bulbs! I think they are still laughing at me, I thought they were selling gardening bulbs. Can't wait to go to church Sunday to see if they are still laughing....

Carolyn

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL! That sounds like something I'd do! We understand...

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

That's funny!....Great gardener's tale of the "beautiful bulbs"!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Yayyyy!! Glad to hear they're arriving safely! I just came in from planting some; its cool and breezy but the sun is shining. Got the ones with the longest sprouts in first- those were worrying me!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Got mine and they look fantastic! THANK YOU Neal!!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Neal, my lilies are here!!!! From what I've seen they are just beautiful! Thank you so much! I have to go off for an appointment in ten minutes or I'd be "fondling" my bulbs! LOL Thank you!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Now if the weather will allow us to get 'em planted!

I did get a few in an area I've been excited about. I nestled in clumps of Regale and Pink Perfection on both sides of the front porch yesterday, and am daydreaming of enjoying the scent sitting on the porch. They're planted among roses; not sure about the bloom time of P.Perfection, but I've grown Regale before and it bloomed with first flush of rose bloom! On one side of the porch we removed 2 huge, ancient taxus last year which opened up a big area to plant. I'm doing it in pastels and have pink and peach hollyhocks, a variegated weigelia, pink, cream, butter yellow, and peach roses (mostly Old Garden roses), and a few bearded iris in there already. Still needs some Asiatics and Orientals too.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I got all my new lilies into the ground on Tuesday--just in time for the invasion of the hungry bunnies.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I have tree rats digging in my seedling bed! If it is not bunnies it is another rodent, arrrrgh.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, I was just like, whoa! what are tree rats?...then I got it!

Have any of you noticed smallish bulbs from The Lily Garden this year? It may have been the varieties I got naturally have smaller bulbs, but Ariadne, Karen North, Rosepoint Lace, Doeskin, and Red Velvet were all about pecan to walnut sized bulbs. The OTs were nice sized though. All those with small bulbs have the same bloom shape and positioning, and the first 3 have L.langkongense parentage. I wondered if small bulbs are normal for them.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

All of the asiatics I have ever gotten from TLG have been small, but have flowered. They may have had a dry year. Anyone in Washington have last years weather report?
