Bird Watching: Daily Pics Vol 71
Very nice burn!
I just love all the waxwings!
Great pics everyone!
Marilyn
Lovely NMJ.
burn,
Nice Waxwing pictures. Early this winter we had flocks of thousands, so I've had a lot of fun playing with them. Looks like you were able to get up close. If you get another chance to shot them, look for bird on the ends of branches with sky for a background. One good blue sky background is worth more than ten shots with junk in the background. (most of the time?) LOL.
On Sunday I took a bird photography trip from Anchorage to Seward and back, about 250 miles round-trip. Shot 220 pictures along the way. I think there might be a couple good shot. This is just a teaser, I'll post a few more as I sort through them. The day ended in an unexpected adventure.
Gary
Thanks for starting the new thread Gary.
Beautiful pics everyone!! I love those Waxwings, I'd sure like to see some around here!
It's been so yucky and gray here, I've been watching my feathered friends but not taking many pics so, I'll just enjoy the ones you all are posting :)
Wonderful pic Gary! What a nice surprise that must have been.
Great in flight shot Jane!
Gary, what a cute scruffy guy!! Can't wait to see the rest.
I was also chasing this hawk around all day
Must admit I'd go for Turkey Vulture too, with its small, pointed head, and black inner wing with slightly paler flight feathers.

Great pictures everyone. I really do enjoy each and every one. So many kinds that I never get to see where I live.
I am still seeing the same species everyday though the behavior seems to be changing. Less time seems to be spent at the feeders and more in the scrub near my home. Lots of singing to be heard too. The days and nights are starting to warm up.
This Sharp-shinned Hawk is still visiting several times a day. He took several drinks and then flew away.
What a great walk you had Nanny :-)
Yeah and a great job tracking the Turkey Vulture nanny! Those guys can sail out of sight in a blink... When they catch a thermal wind here they're gone.
Not much of me here in BW lately.. getting ready for butterfly season here, plus the docent work at
http://www.fwbg.org/butterfly.htm.
Pelle~ I will be lurking here as often as possible, and posting what I can.
Beautiful start to the new thread Gary... Great pictures everyone!
Gary thank for the tip, I will definitely watch for that. I like tips like that. Keep them coming. And thanks for saying the picture was nice, I can't compete with yours, but if you keep giving me tips, I might get there.
I wasn't very close to the birds, This was from inside the house on the north side, and about 30 feet away. I zoomed in with my X10 zoom camera, and then re zoomed again after the shot was taken. I was so afraid they would just fly off without having a chance for pictures, that I just click away, hoping for the best. They didn't stay for very long. :(

PC, I'm posting their cousins, The Bohemian Family
LOL you seem to have always one of the family member up your sleeve to post after my posts :).
Actually my "field trip" on that day was to take pictures of some Great Gray Owls that had been reported in the area but I guess it was too sunny and the owls hugged the tree trunks too closely for me to spot them.
Gary, nice shot of a juv. bald eagle. I know the feeling to sort through many pictures after a trip, the first sorting round is the easiest and it get progressively tougher thereafter ;).
angele, it seems your Hawk likes to get his feet wet :)
Grasmussen, Hello. I will be visiting Anchorage in late July, and wonder what bird book you'd recommend. I have RTP's Eastern, Western and TX. Does he have AK? If so, do you like it?
Great pics V-Valley:-)
Ky#2 is an American Goldfinch
Ky#3 is a White-crowned Sparrow
Love the Flicker!
Nice day for birds in Ky ViburnumValley. I really like that puffed up Goldfinch.
Well PC you would have gotten me on the Owl, if you had gotten a picture of one. Don't have anything that resemble Owls in my collection LOL.
Actually, I wanted people to be able to see the difference between the Cedar and the Bohemian. I figure, there must be people out there, that are doing the same thing as me, come here to learn about the different birds. This is where I learned about, the Common and Hoary Redpolls, and the Blue Jay and Scrub Jay, and all the different Hawks........It's fun.

I will be visiting Anchorage in late July, and wonder what bird book you'd recommend.
I learned on this form a year ago, Peterson is getting a little dated. I'd suggest you add a Stokes Field Guide to Birds, Western Region. You might also consider Birds of Alaska by Robert H. Armstrong, it has the most accurate species distribution info, by regions of the state, available locally when you arrive. The National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America is also very good. I use all of them regularly, plus a few others.
Gary
very nice pics everyone!
