This guy was lovely and stayed around along time until the Starlings showed up. I failed to get a picture of them. Scruffy looking bunch, but I love to watch them fly. Patti
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 11
Very colorful sunrise but the clouds filled in early. Had sleet from noon to 12:30, now has turned to light rain. Just at freezing but temp is supposed to go up through the afternoon. Nasty icing predicted for north and west of here then high winds. Hope they are correct and it stays rain here. Hopefully the rain will move up north too. Ice storms and high winds are not a fun combo. Good luck every one.
We are icing now.
Cannot see out our north windows, because of the icing on them--trees look very pretty, but I'm hoping for no more damage--we lost one huge limb from an old apple in the yard, but I suspect the tree (like a few others left from an old orchard) are over 100 yrs. old. The deer used to come & eat the drops, but we had to fence in everything when we adopted our nasty airedale--Patti--what kind of dogs?
Patti - your Border Collies look perfect with the snow.
Victor - we cross posted.
Your eagle looks like he has a runny nose and something else, too!
Yes I know. He's a mess.
Raining hard again here, but not freezing. it has been holding a steady 40 degrees all day. Love the pictures especially the crape. I noticed on Monday the trees and shrubs had started to reddening up. I saw some willows in the nurserie's yard that were very bright yellow. Nantucket does not have many willows, I need to take a drive to my deceased MIL old home which had one and see what it is doing this week. Patti
Wow - are you sure you're only zone 7, Patti?!!
23 degree's at the moment. It just started snowing here about 15 mins. ago, we are due for it to change to sleet/feezing rain and 25mph winds. I didn't check to find out if we are getting any wind gust, I was to busy stocking the firepalce just in case. I think we will build a fire, put on some tropical music, have some taco's and pretend were in Paradise!
The forsythia buds here keep opening (slowly) day by day. The scallions, carrots and even the lettuce are still fine and we're enjoying them.
Sounds like fun! Guess you don't have too much confidence in that over-sized rat tomorrow...
Lettuce, Pirl?! What's the coldest temp you have had?
We've had very cold weather but I don't recall the coldest - probably 19 or so. I was shocked that it didn't freeze. I'll take photos on Sunday when it's dry (or dryer) out in the vegetable garden.
That's not bad. I thing we got down to 4 or 5.
we have never seen the photo that was supposed to have been snapped. I posed in the same spot - with everything off of course.
Gee, Victor - that must have been chilly!
i hope it was in the summertime.
I was waiting for someone to catch that!
i spend 2 days away from my computer, and see how things slide.
What were you sliding in??
the sleet that thankfully turned to rain as we travelled south today - then less thankfully turned to a DOWNPOUR just past Hartford.
Though driving up in a 14' (ithink) truck in those winds y'all were discussing Wednesday afternoon was probably worse. Bridges were particularly exciting.
(Eric drives, i provide moral support, sometimes navigation, and entertainment. i won't drive anything that doesn't have a rear view mirror.)
Eek - doesn't sound like fun.
I scraped about 1/4" thick ice off my car windows this morning - snapped my ice scraper in 2, never thought to look at the trees until I saw your lovely pics Victor. Turned to rain, and now snow. Lots of accidents on the roads this morning.
btw Victor - i totally really read your post the chilly way at first. It wasn't till i saw that no one else had exclaimed that i went back and reread it.
i'm reallytired.
Amy, I, as innocent as I am, had to go back and find it after reading yours!
apparently i am sleep depraved.
Or deprived? I do agree you are depraved though! Get some rest.
Thanks Deb. Roads were a mess here too. My wife just got home a while ago and said it was not easy driving.
Boojum are you having terrible ice tonight? I heard Keene was bad. We cancelled yet again a visit to Vt this week as the weather looked like it would be not great for skiing or anything except staying in. Not sure yet about my knee, but I might give the bunny slope a try if the weather improves next week. I just want snow in the mountains, no ice. Be safe everyone. I am enjoying my new book on Viburnums and dreaming of spring. Here is a UFO in my yard during the last snow storm taken by DH. Patti
Gee, I had to go back and read that one too, but I didnt find anything wrong with it either way! - I guess I'm a liberal... ☺
* edited to add:
- or maybe just a New Yorker who's seen everything! lol!

Haven't gone out much today. It's so yucky and icy. I typed lists today-hoyas, epiphyllums, hippeastrums. The descriptions took forever but it felt good to have them all spiffy instead of on little scraps of paper. Next I need to update my iris and DL lists. Orchids are mostly current. Blah, blah.
checked the stats:
January weather roundup
Highest temperature: 44 degrees on Jan. 6 and Jan. 28
Lowest temperature: 11 below zero on Jan. 30
Number of days below zero: 10
*Heating degree days: 1481
Snowiest day: 5.5 inches on Jan. 13
Snowfall: 24.9 inches (compared to the average 12.5 inches)
Snowfall so far this winter: 48 inches (compared to the average 27.8 inches)
Records set: Most snow on a Jan. 13 (5.5 inches); tied an all-time high temperature for Jan. 28 (44 degrees)
What's ahead: The snow will slow down and, at least for the time being, the weather will warm up closer to the average, which falls between a low of 11 and a high of 27 degrees in early February. "I don't see any more Arctic Expresses coming down in the short term," said meteorologist Scott Cultice. "That's not to say we're not going to get another blast of really cold air, but for the next week to 10 days it should stay in Canada."
* All records are based on Appleton measurements, except this, which is for northeast Wisconsin and may vary by location.

(our low was -19 per the Weather Channel)
I get the double entendre, but I read it first as off in power, not off as in the buff. Where was Al when he could have gotten a great shot of Victor in the buff with 5000hp lighting him up like a shuttle launch? I am not moving to WI. Patti
Actually this time I did not intend any double entendre, but after posting it, I realized some would take it that way and waited for someone to comment.
It is absolutely pouring here right now!!
Al's country is a little extreme for me but I love his pics, some of the shots he takes can only be gotten in that type of cold... ☺
Not to mention all the dead people and animals.
